I don't know anything about the original, but I'll have to disagree with you, I liked this one! Rebecca DeMornay's performance as the Mother, was nothing short of amzing and for me, the constant mood changes was exactly what made her threatening...
But ot each his own I guess, horror is a very sybjective genre, kinda like comedy! I have watched the Monty Python movies with several different groups of people and while some of us were laughing our asses off, some were looking blankly at the screen and us, trying to figure out what was wrong with us! I think it's the same with horror, some concepts and movies are scary to some, but laughable to others...
Anyway, back on out subject, you are absolutely right about the cliched ending! When are horror writers and directors going to undestand that "the villain wins" kind of endings, are no longer shocking! They might have been back when Rosemary's Baby or the original Halloween came out, but now they happen in EVERY fraking movie! The once shocking twist ending, has now become the ultimate horror cliche! Seriously, it's worse than the "get naked and you'll die" rule!
BTW is this movie officially available in the UK? I think it hasn't been released yet in the US despite some really glowing reviews from dedicated horror sites and critics...

It was released theatrically in the UK by Optimum Releasing on June 10th.
I saw it with a friend and we both agreed that this movie was not good. My friend liked it even less than I did, in fact. But, believe me, the conclusion, with the pregnancy test, etc. was one of many scenes which were just laughable. Only made funnier when a bag of frozen peas was used as a weapon.
I also thought the movie had a fair few plot holes: when they dump the woman behind the dumpster, shouldn't they be able to tell she's still alive? Wouldn't her pulse and body temperature give away that she's not actually dead?
Demornay's performance is a weird one. It is good in place, but sometimes it's over the top and sometimes it's brooding. It's mostly because the writing tries to make her three-dimensional, which I personally don't think they should have tried (for example, seeing her doubt after setting one of the girls on fire undermines rather than enhances the character).

LOL seriously, name me a horror movie WITHOUT plot holes! If you're a horror fan, the first thing you need to do is develop a natural resistance to them... For example, name me ONE horror movie with a slightly competent cop, who isn't a leading character, in it! Hell, name me a horror movie where cops actually cruise around or respond to calls in pairs, like police opeartion protocols all over the world dictate!
I'm not arguing with you BTW, nor am I defending the movie (although I have to say that your "my friend that saw it with me also didn't like it" argument is kinda weak...), I'm just saying that when it comes to horror movies, plot holes and illogical moves made by characters are to be expected in the same way that sex is to be expected in a porn movie! Most horror movies simply wouldn't happen otherwise...
Have you heard of a British horror movie called Eden Lake? Michael Fassbender stars in it and I found it quite interesting and genuinely suspensful at times, although once again, I HATED the "shocking" twist ending...! Have you seen it?

06.19.2011 - 02:59 | TheorendilOh, sorry I forgot you already mentioned it! Yeah, I had exactly the same thoughts about the ending! It was like the writer thought "hey, wait a minute! She is the main character and a pretty strong one at that, she can't get away with it! Besides, NO ONE will see my brilliant twist ending coming!" In my mind, the move ends the second she enters that car and drives away from that forrest!

Funnily, this borefest only got a direct-to-video release here in germany. Although I personally liked the original as a fun and campy take an "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", this remake was just, like you said, "all over the place".
How someone comes up with the idea of making something like "TCM" into more or less a "Reservoir Dogs"-Version with more torture is beyond me. And there were so few similarities between the original and remake, I think it could very well be his own (shitty) selft without trying to capitalize on something with a "popular" title.
And, yeah, the ending was so damn obvious and even headscratching, cause severall subplots just get flushed down the toilet.
Altough I liked the cinematography during most of the movie, Darren Lynn Bousman is quite a capable director, but with a script this bad, theres not much he can do against it.
The tight framing and often too close of off-screen dispiction of violence reminded me of some better examples of the genre and felt rather organic and personally. But, of course, the weak characters destroyed every form of tension nearly imedeatly.
And a bit offtopic: "Eden Lake" was a great movie and also the ending I thought was very much in context with the rest of the movie and made for a skincrawlingly intense ending, that closed the film rather nice. And, yeah, it was soooo much better than "Mothersday", although I really can't help but think about, what horror movies in the last time, that rode this "torture train", were really good. Right now only "Eden Lake" comes to mind, but after that?!?

I'd probably be more engaged with the violence of the movie than the movie itself. I'm a big horror fanatic—plus I read a LOT of horror fiction—and even though you'd say keep a wide berth of the film and, if I saw this movie on FEARnet on Demand, I'd most likely watch it for the gratuitous violence and not take the story and the acting seriously. (Happened to me trying to watch Curse of the Zodiac; 58 minutes in, and I'm done.)

Outside of the current BS camera jitters, 'Battle: LA' was a decent alien invasion movie trying to do 'Black Hawk Down'. Outside of libertard socialistic leanings, reviewers should comment (with humor of course) on movies outside of the typical hollyweird cock sucking seen read and heard ad nauseum.
