I don't hate Dane either. But he needs to stay FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR away from Hollywood. His shtick works best for the stand-up stage, not for the cinema. This movie being a PERFECT example of that. This actually might be WORSE than My Best Friend's Girl (another god awful Dane Cook movie).
I'll give him this much though...he is NO Dan godfuckingdamnintshiteati ngdouchecuntfuckfuckfuckt hatfuckingpieceofshitplea sedieinafuckingditch Fogler...

Okay, first, apologies for replying to this comment just so my comment can be near the top, I normally hate it when people do that.
However, this needs to be brought to everyone's attention...
The main user review of Good Luck Chuck on IMDB gives the film a 10/10...
A ten out of ten.
A TEN. OUT OF. TEN.
Okay, I fully believe in accepting the opinions of others, but this just takes it too far. How can this person give this horrible, horrible movie a TEN OUT OF TEN!
God I needed to vent that so badly. Sorry again!

09.16.2011 - 17:00 | johnkenpwnsI always thought people didn't like Dane Cook because he was a "one-trick pony".
The first time I saw his comedy was on an old Comedy Central stand-up that lasted for about 30 minutes. I enjoyed it back then. Then I saw Vicious Cycle and Rough Around the Edges. IMO, the only difference with all three shows was the length and the number of people present. There's a 7-8 year gap between his Comedy Central special and VC/RatE, yet it sounded like he's been saying the same joke over and over again. His jokes aren't so much as "stolen" (never knew he was being accused of this?) as they are "broken".
As for Dunham, his brand of comedy is fueled by the stereotypes his puppets represent with the exception of Peanut and maybe Walter, but I'm being generous at the moment. I always thought that it was a bad idea for him to have his own TV show and the cancellation of said TV show was enough proof of that.

I think Dane Cook and Jeff Dunham, along with the likes of Nick Swardson and Aziz Ansari, are better at stand-up than they are at scripted (or worse, improvised) dialogue.
I do enjoy Jeff Dunham, dummies and all, but he -like the others I mentioned- really shouldn't have their own shows or attempt movie careers. They really just need to stick with their act.

Case in point: Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector.
I heard that movie was PRETTY horrid.
At least Cars didn't seem half bad, being he was in it.

09.16.2011 - 17:03 | johnkenpwnsPersonally, all of my favorite comedians from CC are either dead or too awesome to hate. Two of 'em still make regular rounds on the channel. Nearly every weekday...you might know them.

Ugh, this romantic "comedy" is just all three shades of wrong. I think I will watch "Hitch" to find my faith in today's romantic comedies again. At least in that movie the main character tried to help other men get that one girl of thier dreams that always got away from them due to a case of low self-confidence. Which to me is both charming and heart-warming and funny seeing how he gets nervous around a girl he likes and doing all the wrong things considering Hitch is suppose to be the "expert" on helping guys with romance. Also when they had a fat person in that movie, they didn't make a joke out of it, they made him one of the characters that needed help getting his crush to go on a date with him now because of his weight, but because of his nervousness.
But this movie.....its like the anti-romantic movie more than the anti-comedy. Its the kind of movie bitter non-romantics watch when they don't want to go out on Valentine's Day. Or to a lesser extent what a pathetic dateless misoygonistic loser would watch alone because he will never be a fullfilling relationship.
This movie really needed to be beaten down FB, great job. :D

Oh yeah!? When I was still a very small child my mom and aunt wanted to go see a movie and took me a long with them and they wound up seeing Basic Instent! I don't remember it since I was so younge but they love telling that story of having to leave the theater because of me screaming every time they tried to cover my eyes and ears!

Fuck this putrid excuse for a movie, seriously. Seeing Jessica Alba and that idiotic Seth Rogen wannabe try to be funny is more than enough to give me a migraine, along with all the sexist jokes and stereotypes (especially the Fat Slags reference.) Excellent review.
Also, shame on this film for using Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead." An excellent piece of Gothic Rock, used in the most awkward scene at the beginning. I'm pretty sure there were no nine year old Goths back in 1985. (And by Goths, I mean the true old-school fans of Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, and Souxie and the Banshees; not the posers the media constantly portrays incorrectly.)

Seth Rogan wannabe? I recall Dane Cook being around before Seth Rogan. At least, I only remember his career only taking off after Pinapple Express.
As for Jessica Alba, you ever see her filmography on Rotten Tomatoes? It's amazing how many bad movies she's been in. Maybe she's got a biological bad-script magnet or something.

I also love “Mystery Men,” and I consider it as an underrated classic.
I actually like Jessica Alba. I thought she did fine in the Fantastic Four films.
I feel that the opening flashback scene is a prequel/sequel to “Milk Money.” Also, the Goth girl reminds me of a 10-year-old version of Angelina Jolie, which for the record DOESN’T surprise me.
6:12- There are reasons why I don’t watch many romantic comedies (unless they’re interesting), and this moment shows why. “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” this movie is not.
Hey, Matthew, whenever
8:02- I agree. She should be looking like Laurie Strode at the end of Rob Zombie’s “Halloween.”
I’m one of those people whose waiting for Miss. Right, not Miss. Right-Flapping-Now.
15:59- Or a pie in “American Pie.”
19:36- It’s at this moment of the film where I’d shoot myself, but I only have toy guns.
23:28- Yeah. Also, I think there should be a law about filming yourself giving oral to a stuffed animal.

Well, nice job Hollywood filmmakers. You've really done it this time. Don't worry, I'm being perfectly sincere. The opening bit was hi-larious. A guy being sexually assaulted by a girl? Too funny, especially since it involves ten-year-olds! When a guy assaults a girl, it's horrifying and tragic, but when a girl assaults a guy? Comedy gold! This reminds me of a male friend of mine in high school who got drunk on an overnight school trip with a bunch of the other students and ended up getting raped by a female classmate. He was too drunk to put up a struggle... at least he was also too drunk to remember much of it. When he told the teacher about what happened, he was crying and stuff... too funny. Thank you, filmmakers. Thank you for helping me see the humor in sexual assault...
All right, seriously? Go to hell, Hollywood! If this isn't the most tasteless, asinine, tasteless, tasteless schlock, I don't know what is. Who thought that this would be funny? Who thought this disgusting, sexist filth would be a good idea? Don't ignore me... I want names and addresses, damn it! *grabs gun* I'm so angry, I'm... I'm...
Wait... it's finally happened. I've become so angry that I've reached a state of Nirvana. Nothing can affect me anymore. I feel almost nothing... no compassion, no joy, no platonic man-love for Phelous... all that remains is a hot, white hatred. It's so beautiful... *does Sith lightning* All right, who's first?
-
All jokes aside, that's a pretty melancholic story, and it seemed to hit you pretty hard. Hope your friend turned out okay.
My forehead is actually red from all the facepalms I did while watching this review. Dane Cook needs to stay away from movies and find a nice safe sitcom to waste his life away on, that is, if he's even still working.

Hey, if you're serious about going after the filmmakers with a gun, I'll give you a hand. Rape. Is. Not. EVER. Funny. Even ignoring all the other shit in this film, anyone who writes a rape or sexual assault scene and plays it for LAUGHS is going on my list
And this is more a personal thing that bothers me, but Hollywood, STOP giving rom-com female leads "lesbian phases". Just....stop it.
And I know this probably doesn't mean much, but I'm really sorry about what happened to your friend =(
-
09.15.2011 - 20:54 | RPGaholicOkay, seriously, this movie's comedy was headache inducing.
I found minor bits hilarious, but for the most part... unfunny. Dane Cook needs to go back to stealing jokes. At least then he was funny.
-
09.15.2011 - 20:55 | Desertpunk23Actually some denominations of christianity aren't against premarital sex, The abstinence mentality started in the dark ages for the Catholic church. However even Christian churches who aren't against premarital sex aren't for whoring yourself out so the church girl scene still fails.

09.15.2011 - 20:56 | RumthomasI couldn't watch this movie without cringing, nice work Film Brain. I thought this movie was sad since Dane Cook can be funny but also it made my face hurt from cringing a lot.

Isn't Dan Fogler the guy who played Jake Gyllenhaal's repulsive brother in Love & Other Drugs? I HATED him in that.
As for this film, I've heard how bad it was, but actually seeing clips of it was actively tortuous.
And thanks for blacking out all the boobs, but treating us to a shot of Dane Cook's ass. That was truly appreciated.

Wanna know something funny - When this movie came out, I remember telling people I'd rather be stabbed than see this. And they chastised me for it. Now I stand by my claim. It's like they plugged everything that lures people into a theater and everything that makes a movie obnoxious and came out with this.
BTW, good job on the Mystery Men shout out. I really like that movie and also refer to it as the only time Dane Cook has made me laugh.
-
09.15.2011 - 21:40 | CPC24I almost rented this once. I knew it would probably be bad, since it's Dane Cook, but WOW...it might be worse than The Love Guru! That's saying something, since that movie was painfully, painfully bad. Just when you thought it couldn't get worse, it did! It was basically all the bits too dirty and/or too dumb for Austin Powers made into a film. I can't wait until you review it. You will have plenty to work with.

When I was young and I watched these certain kind of bad movies, I didn't know the phrase 'bad movie' as I thought all movies were something that requires time and effort into making. I always had a nagging feeling in the back of my mind and I didn't know what it was. It was pretty much my developing movie goer senses saying this is a bad film. I definably felt it when I was watching this POS.

The moment that idiot compared Martin Luther King Jr. to Dane Cook whoring himself for women was when I threw my arms in the air and gave up hope of any kind of entertainment or intelligence.
God, this was a painfully dumb movie. If the "best friend" wasn't annoying me with his presence, it was the very forced and awkward "romance" between Cook and Alba's characters. And as FB mentioned, the movie is disgustingly misogynistic and sexist to the point of being offensive.
Also, why is the title "Good Luck Chuck"? They never call him Chuck, just Charlie. It should've been called "Good Luck Charlie" for Pete sake.
