10.07.2010 - 22:17 | Jackass MaskProps to Spoony for what I'm calling the "Cross-Continental C-c-c-c-combo!"
Saw the movie just last week for the umpteenth time. Yes it's completely stupid, horribly directed. and comes to absolutely no point. But, I still like watching it for some reason.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
*checks to see who's at the door*
Crap! It's Richard Grant! Run!

alright, I just wanted to say that because he's been sick for the past couple of weeks (or days, I forgot)
Anyway, back to watching the video.
Alright, done. Nice review FB. Too bad that this movie was a mess, it seemed like it had potential to be really funny. =/

10.07.2010 - 23:30 | KungFuManThat's actually pretty true. If they'd put more work into making it cohesive it might've been a lot stronger a film. I like it even though I know it's a bad movie in the end though.
...Yet oddly until now I didn't get that was Stalone's brother in those scenes. Go figure.

I absolutely loathe this film. I watched it back in 1995 when I was beginning to like Bruce Willis after Die Hard 3 had come out. I thought maybe that being young at the time I hadn't really grasped the film so I gave it another shot a couple of years later.
Nope, still hate it. I mean the horrendous plot, silly anachronistic goofs, mediocre performance by Willis himself, the film is just painful watch all together. I find it really hard to believe that this could be be cult "classic" or have any fans besides really die hard fans of Bruce Willis. Pun unintended.

10.07.2010 - 23:44 | ttime23I have never been able to see all of this film. I always walk in when they're blowing up Da Vinci's castle and can't understand anything else after. I really can't tell if this is supposed to be a parody because even parodies have some sort of sustained plot sequence, which-as you pointed out-this film does not. I can definitely tell that things are forced and started to play to the lowest common denominator, but I couldn't help but chuckle slightly at the dolphin part.
....I think I need to be caned o_O

See, I heard different. I heard Willis REFUSED to wear a piece during the production. But when he saw the completed project he was appalled at the sight of the bald spot atop his crown ( in the few scenes it was shown). The filmmakers went back and added in "hair" to those scenes, ala CGI.
The guy who directed this movies was Michael Lehmann, who also directed Heathers. He went from that modest budget debut to large scale sophomore effort (Hawk).
BTW, Mat it's Sandra Bernhard, who was in this movie, not Sarah. Sarah Bernhardt was a famous actress of stage and silent film in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

I can't help but wonder what this movie would have been like if the actors weren't trying so hard. Great review Film Brain. I really loved the freak out/over acting bit. And the Spoony cameo, I'm always happy to see my favorites reviewers in the same video. I'd love to see you two do a review together.

Half the story? I did leave a few things out (Bunny, in particular) but its difficult to condense a 100 minute film in 20 mins, particularly one with as many chracters and subplots as Hudson Hawk.
And if I have no sense of humour, why I am making funny videos on the internet? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose?

10.08.2010 - 01:25 | ZweiI like Richard E. Grant... which is weird. Because 90% of his movies completely suck. It's as if he just has crap luck.
I did like "How to Get Ahead in Advertising" though.

I guess I would be one of those people that loves it because it's so bad it's good. Sure, some of it is hit and miss, but this movie always amused me with its quirkiness.
I understand that to the trained eye (and especially a trained film buff), the perceived flaws are tenfold, but I still wouldn't call this a bad movie in terms of Bad Movie Beatdown. You have reviewed movies way worse; this one, compared to festering piles like The Ugly Truth, at least has some redeeming features. Still, good review - a pair-up is always good to see! I still say Spoony should do his own version, too, I would be interested in the contrast.

10.08.2010 - 01:47 | badcop69i hate to question you but almost every bit of material i can find on this movie through multiple sources peg the movie in 1991 not 1981 and considering i was around when this movie hit theaters it was 1991 not 1981 since i remember seeing it clearly as a teen and not as a 2 year old baby. sorry filmbrain but you fail!

I alway thought this movie to be bad because of the ridiculous villains. Especially, as I now see, because of the line delivery of Bruce Willis' German voice actor was much more badass and didn't seem so over the top.
With that in mind the villains seemed strangely out of place and just felt awkward. It could deal with the main character being a little too cheerful for the grim situations he gets but these excuses for villains just ruined it.

I've heard the dubs on the film, particularly the German one, is much better than the original English audio because they inserted in their own jokes.
I would be interested to hear the film in German, if it wasn't for my rather primitive understanding of the language and the fact that the UK DVD only has the English audio. (the reason for this is that the film was cut by the BBFC for Willis lockpicking early on - there's no subtitles at all, even more shockingly)

10.08.2010 - 07:42 | KariWait. . . it was OK to have a cat burglar as a protagonist, as long as he doesn't demonstrate his skills? :eyebrow: I'm a little mystified about what they hoped to accomplish with that.

10.08.2010 - 04:13 | NOTYETUSEDNAMEHi FilmBrain. I saw this film in the Theater and successfully got my money back after it was done. Without a doubt one of the stupidest films ever made, and you critiqued it perfectly. Your jokes were funny and completely justified and I loved the musical embellishments you used. Kudos to Spoony for the Cameo-same for lordhebe. Keep up the great work, and I'll be eagerly waiting for your next review, my friend. Peace.

I get the feeling Spoony enjoyed beating down FB.
This movie... about halfway into the review I was thinking "maybe it's okay" but it just got so irritating. Geez...
But killing people can be funny.
As for Mark Kermode, yes, he is an idiot. For a start, he comes across as a bit of a prick, and secondly he really loved Twilight.
