Ah yes, the finale to this less than stellar tale. The final battle left me wondering what the point of the Brethren Court was. They met, handed over their Pieces of Eight, and then ceased to be necessary to the story.

I did enjoy the sheer chaos of the final battle, but it would have been better if the other ships were at least fighting around the whirlpool.

Also, one quick note on Calypso...*clears throat*

Worst case of crabs EVER!

I agree about the Brethren Court. That whole plot point was what really bothered me the most about this entire movie. They spend all this time building up the fact that they need Jack back to have this meeting which will decide the future of most, if not all, pirates on the seas, and then they just sit in the background while the flagships fight. In anything in this movie was pointless, it was that. :sigh:

Good review Matthew. I'm glad to see you addressed all the issues I had with this movie and made pretty good points in general. I also really liked your inclusion of Welshy as a counterpoint. It's good to get two different perspectives on these kinds of things, and I enjoyed hearing why Welshy liked it just as much as I enjoyed hearing why you did not. =)

I don't really hate this movie, in all truth. I'm just not very fond because there are too many things that really bother me about it. I didn't even know they were making a 4th one, but here's hoping it will be good.

I know I'm gonna get massively downvoted for this like I was in the first video but I hate the Pirates Of The Carribean Trilogy even though I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan I personally can't stand Jack Sparrow. The movies are long and contrived (as a whole the trilogy is over 7 hours long) not to mention unfunny with bland characters and a stupid plot. The only good thing about them are the special effects and the sets, the destruction of The Endeavour is one of the greatest special effects sequences I've ever seen.
• Hichcoot
You know what really bugs me of the reviews that Brain does... is that MOST of the time he is just saying '' see this thing? Its pointless!''

'' See that special effect? Its pointless!''

'' They could have done that thing differently so know that thing is pointless!''

I agree that movies could have pointless scenes, but you just sound like you are just nitpicking a lot!! and I mean a lot!!!
• Dolphin34
Even though i have all three on dvd this one did not hold up well on the second viewing. I remember sitting in the theater and laughing at the giant calypso, the motivational speech and the marriage because it was just so stupid. But ill admit even though we wait for an eternity the final battle was very good in my opinion.but it doesn't save the movie unfortunatley. I guess this goes down as yet another threequel that sucks

Great conclusion Brain. I kinda liked this movie at first... but there's no question it was vastly inferior to the original. Thanks.

Back when I saw this movie the first time in theaters I walked out of there with not a damn clue what happened cause I was bored almost to sleep..... the only thing I remembered was that I wanted anyone to explain what the hell just happened....

God I hated that council scene... I think the director got drunk and lost a bet to his friends and had to find a way to throw them into the movie... enjoy the next 10 minutes of mindless drivel!

Thankfully that Braveheart reference had perfect timing... Ironically, being placed next to Orlando Bloom can make Keira Knightly look as masculine as Mel Gibson...

FUCK THE POTC FRANCHISE!

For 4 fucking years, this franchise has been shoved down my throat and butt by assholes from Disney.

This franchise's popularity just sickens me. I like the first POTC movie and it's one my top 100 favourite films, but this series doesn't deserve sequels nor the fame.

The second movie had the most cringe-worthy humour i've ever seen. And the reason why people laughed at the jokes is because they might be Dane Cook fans or something. But anyways, the jokes are so lame and we get it: Captain jack is a drunk man and his pirate crew are bumbling comic reliefs. So what? I don't get what's so funny about that.

And the third movie was overblown and boring. Film brain was right, and that the death of one of my favourite Hong Kong actors in this film just weakens the whole movie. Apparently they added him just for them to say 'Hey, it' set in Asia, so let's bring a famous Asian guy into the whole scene without giving him anything cool and interesting, because he's Asian!" Also, who cares about pirate politics? The last thing we want to see in a pirate film is politics, and having Elizabeth in the discussion does nothing, just like Keith Richards' cameo.

And this franchise also created the douchiest fanboy culture in the world. i couldn't walk a street without hearing someone talking about how cool PoTC is, or how girls want to fuck Jack Sparrow. It's just annoying.

Say what you want about the Twilight films, atleast it ended or slowed down the PoTC fanboy culture. And unlike the PoTC fanboys, atleast the Twitards managed to keep their Twilight love to themselves, unlike the PoTC fanboys and fangirls who kept shoving this ridiculous franchise down my fucking throat and ass.

Fuck this Franchise and fuck Michael Eisner for causing this in the first place.

First, as a wise but very annoying character once said: "Okay dude; calm down. Take a chill pill. If you don't have a chill pill, take one of those chill strips. You put it on your tongue, it dissolves, chill."

Second, you are a man who has lost any and all sense of scope. Comparing PotC, which started out amazing and dipped down into the mediocre as time went on, to Twilight, a mentally and morally corruptive franchise that has been all bad all the time that illustrates just how rotten American culture can be, is one of the most downright stupid things I've ever heard.

Comparing the fanbases is even stupider. Do many people like PotC? Yes. Do a lot of people like to talk about it? Probably. Do they cut off ties with friends who don't like it and may actually physically maim them? No. That is Twitard territory. Saying that the general consensus of the enjoyability of a franchise that you personally do not like is worse than the pack of [s]girls[/s] [s]people[/s] trogs who are so obsessed with an unhealthy version of romance that they have shown hatred and violent hostility to anyone that criticizes it is the most idiotic thing - hands down - that I have ever seen.

You. Fail. Forever.

I agree on many points that both Film brain and Welshy bring up, I agree with Welshy on Will Turner's act, though he is a big prick. But I mostly agree with FB, especially on the beginning, I mean yeah it's Disney film, kids are going to see it. Also Jack Sparrow has become a joke, he was awesome in the first movie and now man what a waste. And finally I hate Elizabeth, Keira Knightley is a good actress but damn her character is a bitch.

Great job Film Brain
• Rickie
I thought they were entertaining movies, not the best ever, but decent. It was ultra-lame killing the Kraken off screen like that though.

It wouldn't have killed them to add a few scenes with the rest of the court engaging the overwhelming amount of East India ships, either. Maybe have Calypso sink a few ships here there. As it is, it just felt like the whole thing was for nothing since the Pearl decided everything by herself anyways.

I'll say this: I love each POTC movie, think the series as a whole is amazing, and think each film was better than the last, and nobody will ever make me think any differently

so screw you, Matthew Buck :snooty:
• jdh1271
oh and also i agree with FB. Too much talking, not enough action.
• Nasikoman
My own stance is part-way between Matthew and Welshy. Many of the jokes FB found stale I still enjoyed, and I especially loved the Locker sequence and the endless imaginary Jack Sparrows. However, most of the plot is just a sheer blank spot in my memory: there seems to be very little meaning to the madness. It's not so much a story as it is a plot. (The queen died then the king died vs. the queen died then the king died of grief).

And while I always figured Calypso must have caused the Whirlpool Of Doom, her release always seemed greatly anti-climactic. She finally learned the one who betrayed her was actually Davy Jones, but then she just makes a whirlpool and does nothing else to the story? Or did she really just evaporate into a bunch of crabs and go on her merry way? I feel that part, what should be one of the clearest parts of the story, was muddled and confused. The swordfight/marriage I felt was way over the top at the time, but all the same I still smiled while everyone in the theater was clapping when they finally kissed. But for FSM's sake I wanted to blow my brains out when the inevitable cooing over their son began.

The speech about what noble souls the pirates are is equally confused. If the film was trying to say the East India Company was just another band of pirates, that makes sense. The way the movie turns the regular pirates into the working class heroes ruins it and is really odd, though.

I just don't see what there is to hate about the movie, it's only trying to be fun and entertaining and, in my opinion, it succeeded in that. It didn't go above and beyond, but I certainly wasn't expecting anything more than the first two. Maybe it's the popularity behind the trilogy that can make or break the experience sometimes.
• jdh1271
I think what turned people away was the extremely baffeling story, and a movie can be just fun and still be good but make the story simple and understandable.
• SayaCeline
I think that for kids this movie doesn't work. When I was little I hated dialogue scenes. They were dull and slow. Also I don't think the younger viewers could really appreciate what this movie was trying to get across. I liked it better than the second one, which I found painfully dull, but I haven't watched it again since. I kept feeling like the story line was trying to be child friendly but adult at the same time and they just didn't pull it off.
• adsbean
Actually the question of whether Will remains with the Flying Dutchman at the end was a question that I had when I first saw this movie in theatres. I assumed that Will was freed: firstly because Disney loves cheesy endings and two because that is how the original myth works as depicted in Wagner’s Flying Dutchman opera.

http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ The_Flying_Dutchman_(oper a)

So its interesting that obviously when they went to write the FAQ the writer did not seem to be aware of this fact.

I'm rather confused as to why you seem to think this movie, or indeed this series, was meant for young kids, aside from the fact that it was made by Disney. If, in fact, the Disney name is the reason, the I would like to direct your attention to the numerous other films that Disney has produced that are directed at older kids/teens, the most recent probably being the Prince of Persia movie.

From the very beginning, it was clear that this movie was directed at an older crowd than Disney's usual target audience, with zombies and pirates and people killing each-other. As the series went on, it got darker because the kids and teenagers who saw the first one were getting older and more mature as well. By the time the third movie came out, the average age range of the people who had seen the first movie had gone from 12-16 to 15-20.
• CuteWeirdGirl

I totally agree with that. It was never mentioned that this was a kids film. In fact, every DVD box has a 12 years older thingy on it.

No one is more free than a pirate, free of laws, free to sail the earth, and free of morals. Whether that's a good thing or not is subjective but the point is that limitlessness is the romance of piracy.

While I actually did enjoy the Pirates trilogy, you do bring up some valid points. One thing I feel compelled to mention, your necrophilia comment. I've actually discussed this at length with a few of my psychologist friends, amongst other fetishes, I find them fascinating. Anyway, we came to the conclusion that having sex with an undead is generally not a form of necrophilia. Part of the appeal of having sex with a corpse is that it doesn't move, doesn't struggle, providing a feeling of power and control. The undead by contrast would be more or less like having sex with a live person, however, as such it is it's own fetish, which we affectionately call unnecrophilia. Granted this would depend on the type of undead, but Will would be of the sort that for all intents and purposes is alive.

Great. Maybe you can get it on one of those 'Strange Sex' programs.
• ChaosZereul
So a thousand people screaming in the comments section didn't come out as clear enough? The movie was not intended for children, it was made with slightly older audiences in mind. "But it's Disney, so kids are bound to see it." Yeah, sure, kids will find ways to see it, just like kids and young teens will find ways to get into R-rated movies. The movie wasn't intended for them, so if they go and see it, it's not the fault of the creator, it's the fault of the parents who allowed it. So, now that this horse has been properly shot and kicked into hamburger meat, I'll move on.

I have to admit, as much as I raged on the first half of the review, a lot of points you made here made sense. I actually did laugh at the Pirate Council scene, but on second viewing I'll admit it is a rather pointless scene. I never liked Elizabeth at all - I have no real opinions about Keira Knightley as a whole - so I'll be the first to admit I could seldom sit through her scenes.

Now, when you spoke about comparing "freedom" vs. "piracy," I have to admit I always thought of the two as similar. I mean, really think about it. As evil as they were historically, pirates were basically men who didn't want to be tied down to a regular life, a "normal" life. They wanted to explore the world, become rich, and basically just do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. Now, yes, many of them plundered, pillaged, and murdered countless people, and I can't condone such things in civilized society. But these are people who decided to do away with the notions of "civilized society" and live by their own rules, something I think we all secretly long we could do. So, as cheesy as it was, talking to pirates about freedom does make sense, though since it's coming from Elizabeth...yeah, Barbossa, if you would?

after watching the full review, I have to back Welshy.

I loved this movie when I first saw it, and I still do.

I found the Kraken death mildly off-putting, but it didn't stop me from loving everything else.

The council scene is one of my FAVORITE scenes.

so what if there's lots of talking? It'd be one thing if this were the first movie; it isn't. The characters have evolved at this point. We're here to see the conclusion, and we don't need battles every 5 seconds to do it. I think they handled the battles perfectly.

Oh, and in regards to Will Turner's dark--and to some, foolish--turn, consider what Jack Sparrow said in the first movie: "Me, I'm dishonest; and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest.... honestly! It's the honest ones you want to watch out for; never know when they'll do something incredibly stupid." ':B-)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Matthew, come on....you can do better than this. Review a movie that deserves it...like the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, or again...National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.

I have a bit of a problem with focusing on the wrong things. For the most part, I had no problem with your opinions about parts being boring or pointless. However, there was a part near the end that I can't let pass: When you mentioned how the dark tone makes it seem inappropriate for the young audience it's aimed it.
First, I think this movie would be more accurantely described as a family movie, meaning that while it won't have strictly "adult" themes, it's still deemed viewable by young'n's.
Second, kids can comprehend and cope with quite a bit more than you give them credit. Recalling NC's Top 11 Saddest Nostalgic Moments, there are two points he made that I'd like to reiterate here. First, on Don Bluth movies, kids can handle quite a bit of "mature" material, as long as there's some kind of happy ending; maybe not a "happy" ending, per se, but the movie fades out on Jack being silly, the bit that put asses in seats for all three movies. Second, his #1 moment was an amalgam of moments from numerous Disney animated movies, such as Bambi, The Lion King, and so on. Hell, I was there for The Lion King in the theatre, and I like to think I took it pretty well.
