Huh huh... you said butthead. (I have waited 15 years to use that line again).

I'm not too confident, as you are DW, in a revival of Beavis and Butthead. It always seemed like one of those things that worked when it worked and shouldn't be disturbed once it was put to rest. It should be something to remember fondly and not to be milked. Like you, I'm not saying it will be bad. However, it feels like the creator realizes that hehasn't been good as of late and is trying to go back to what made him successful.

Oh well, I hope it will work out. I may not have been the biggest Beavis and Butthead fan, but it was still a good thing in my eyes.

Beavis and ButtHead should stay retired.

Finally! After years of watching the not-quite-as-funny King of the Hill, wishing that Beavis and Butt-Head would come back, and now they're finally returning! Huh huh, that's cool, huh huh!

Very nice take on this, as you brought up quite a few points I've discussed with friends...all we can do is hope.

Another downside is that Mike Judge doesn't really sound like them anymore. A few years back there was an infomercial for the Volume 1 DVD (which they somehow got Billy Dee Williams to appear in), and Beavis and Butt-head sounded vaguely like they used to. The problem is Mike's voice has changed with age.

Can't disagree with you enough DW.

Beavis abd Butt-Head(as Judge has stated in the past)are characters that can be dropped in any time frame like Bugs Bunny, Superman or Popeye. If they have good writers behind them then they can last.

King of the Hill was also hilarious due to the Hank reactions to modern culture. Hank was only similar to Tom Anderson but unlike Anderson he was a likable down to Earth character that was competent. On top of that it has a great supporting cast that almost rivals The Simpsons or South Park that had their own personalities and story arcs.

Your concerns are noted but I think Beavis & Butt-Head have much to make fun with the likes of reality TV, the incompetence of the Bush/Obama Presidencies, online shows, fads and take them for a beating.

It would be nice to have a good animated show again besides South Park for me to watch.

Except (as DW pointed out) that would digress from the zeitgeist of the original Beavis and Butthead.

But a new Beavis and Butthead for a new generation could be the best thing ever - we children of the 90s identify with the characters because we remember videos being on TV and the moral crusaders getting entirely too much airtime, but if the new generation can identify with them via reality tv, the internet, and so on, all power to them.

The only thing that can really kill this revival for my money is if Mike Judge pussies out and doesn't take a risk on re-imagining the characters - if he takes the easy route and just does the old B&B the exact same way he did before, the revival will probably suck like so many others.

EDIT: Holy crap, Beavis trolling /b/... it makes so much sense...

I second Gundam Warrior, if Mike Judge is confident B&B can make the transition into the modern day I will remain optimistic. The weakest link here is MTV seeing as how their program schedule is just complete, and utter garbage. They in all honesty have absolutely NO currentlt active shows worth watching. Even there award shows are fucking insulting to anyone besides fucking twi-tards. Now and then I will watch MTV2 for topical shows from Dickhouse (Jackass, Wildboyz, etc.) productions.

While I agree the music video critiques will be an issue, but there are certainly ways around it. Maybe they could use Stuart as the source of their music videos. He could bring over DVDrs with shitty videos for them to watch. Look I grew up with those goofballs as well, and while a lot could go wrong I will remain optimistic.

I wish King of the Hill would come back, one of my favorite cartoons of all time. I never got into Beavis and Butthead.

Though maybe that's because it was on MTV, which I never watched.

Then again, the actress who played Luann on King of the Hill died a few months ago, so I'm not sure it could come back.

    Y.. YES! Yes!... Score!

I'm suprised they haven't even made another movie where they go against the entire world.

I too wonder if it'll take place this year or the past. Knowing Mtv, they'll want it to be super marketable so they'll shove in whatever pop songs populer now.

I personally liked King of the Hill. It was a nice change of pace from the now Family Guy controlled FOX. It's ability to subtly create hilarious, character driven humor was what made me like the show even more. I honestly never got into Beavis and Butthead...don't know why I just didn't.

Beavis and Butthead belong in the 90s. They were the voice of the 90s. They will be only out of place here. You are completely correct in your asessement of the social commentary.

Wow! Extract came out already? That must have been in theaters for a day. Course, to be fair, Office Space wasn't exactly a box office hit.

I perfer Daria. Ad-least it has class and it's totally funny to this day. I recommend Daria more than BnB.

  • JackBrimstone
    avatar

I'll agree to that one. Daria was just a bit more enjoyable as a whole. Sure B&B had its funny moments. But there were plenty of hit or misses as well. Hence why Mike wont release B&B season box sets and just release the Best of. Sides, in a today's world, B&B would more than likely be the target of a /b/ attack.

I disagree with your viewpoints on King of the Hill and The Goode Family. I thoroughly enjoyed those shows because of the social commentary, sure it wasn't as subtle but to me that was the point, it was supposed to be blatant because that's how blatant it really is. And as for Mike Judge's movie career let's not forget Office Space and Idiocracy which are two of my favorite movies of all time.

I gotta be honest I never liked the idea of this revival. While everybody else was like OH MY GOD THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME.. I'm like This is gonna be awful I mean there is just no way it can work out Not to mention Yeah Mike Judge sucks I swear After like 6 seasons King of the Hill sucked. and I really don't think he can make something great again. Anyways Great Video DW I really enjoyed it and I agree with it. :music:

I for one would prefer to see adult Beavis and Butthead living in this era. They wouldn't have changed to much, but the world has, thus the making for the comedy. They could have beards since they always wanted some, maybe Butthead could have a kid via a sperm bank mishap allowing him to never have scored but still be stuck with a kid time to time. Maybe him and Beavis could work at some Wal mart inspired store where they cause havoc. Hell make Stewert or Todd the Manager, Todd could even be a born again Christian fighting his urge to whoop ass.

  • Wackd
    avatar

You make a few good points, but seeing as AC/DC and Metallica are still fairly big at my school and everyone and their kid brother has a hard-rock band (cover or otherwise), I highly doubt the logical conundrum you propose will be an issue. I grew up too young to be allowed to watch the show, but having found episodes online I can say B&B remind me of kids I know from school, which I take as a good sign for the show staying relevant without derailing the characters.

Beavis's voice is worrisome, though, and hopefully Judge will realize this and hand the character over to Billy West or someone. You admitted he can still do a good Butt-Head, even if "the magic is gone", so that shouldn't be too big an issue. Plus, the footage is from them being pimped out as promotional material, which might be why the heart wasn't in it. Judge is devoting himself to a revival rather than just using the characters as a cheap grab for attention. So he might put more effort into the voices.

You have very valid points, DW. But there are some other factors to consider as well:

I thoroughly loved Beavis & Butthead when it first aired on MTV. But it wasn't just the times that changed - I changed, too. I grew up some after their popularity began to wane, and their rather juvenile humor just didn't appeal to me anymore. The same with Ren and Stimpy: loved it at first, but lost interest over time.

My point here, we have all grown since this show first came out. We've lived through the Clinton years, the Bush years, and the beginning of the Obama years. We're different, our culture is different, Mike Judge is different (as you pointed out), and no matter how you slice it, Beavis and Butthead will be different. With this combination of factors in place, I just don't see an all-new Beavis and Butthead really working very well.

Beavis and Butthead are coming back? Okay. I probably won't watch it, anyway. Honestly, I'm waiting for Sifl and Olly to return.

I feel that if they keep to trying to emulate the source material, they'll end up like the short revival of Ren and Stimpy.

Set them up as adults. Slightly older and more mature, but still explicit dumbasses. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a perfect example of how stupid adults can be entertaining.

what do we have to lose?

    our minds.

i would like to see the 2 aged. they'd be.... late 20s now? maybe early 30s?

and to see them experience our world for the first time, have them been in jail all these years. so we can experience our world from there first-time perspectives.

would like to see the 2 pick apart a justin bieber video.

but yes, again, where to watch music videos on tv anymore? they'd have to work the internet.

that I could see as a season 1 story arc.

and thats just the beginning. season 2 would be there journey on how to work the damn thing. you know, how to find sites and surf the net.

maybe they could have a parole officer to help advance the story quicker?
