Hagan, this arc is a treat. (and confuses me in the most awesome of ways) They were so much jokes pulling my string in this episode, plus a Bela Lugosi cameo AND a Devo reference... What's not to like?
I've been wanting to see Planet of Lost Souls for long, without actually doing it - you convinced me I had to. May you be thanked!
(As for the question of knowing why Dr Moreau is turning animals into human hybrids, I'd say it's somewhere along the lines of "for Sciiience's sake" and "because he can". Oh, thirties' logic -and basic understanding of evolution), I love you-.
(Besides, he has a French-sounding name, so he HAS to be a narcissistic maniac... trust me, I'm French)
Thank you again for that gem! And many, many props to That SciFi Guy for playing disdain all too well.
(These flubs were grand)

Syfy Lad did a good job for sure. And it was the perfect choice of movie for this particular possession. Unless there is a better one that I don't know. Which I doubt!
Anyway, it was an episode most enjoyable.
PS: If he isn't too attached to his beard, Leon could definitely rock some decent drag. Shecotay for the win!

It's not really surprising that the earlier the version of this story the better it works because basic premise is really a product of its time and just doesn't age well. I don't just mean the limited understanding of the science, but the basic philosophical & sociological worldview that leads to such a mangled understanding of evolution. In fact I wouldn't be complaining so much about having such a clearly White woman playing a supposed Polynesian-really animal/human hybrid, as scratch the surface of Wells' original story and you'll probably find echos of the ugly sort of racism that could have easily led to all the animal/human hybrids in this film being played by a variety of distinctly less-white ethnic types (such as "swarthy" Hungarians like Lugosi).
I think the reason gorilla suits were so popular in 30's & 40's movies is that unlike lions, actual gorillas in captivity were very rare. So rare, in fact, that people didn't seem to have a good enough frame of reference to realize how obviously fake-looking gorilla suits really were. ...Although that doesn't explain why they keep turning up in John Landis movies from the 80's.
(And yes, Doug as Hagan needs to happen.)

A kickass review of one of my favorite 1930's horror films. It's been said by everyone but I'll say it again: Charles Laughton is simply amazing as Dr. Moreau.
As regards his accent and him having been in Australia, though, he doesn't say he was born there. Just that he lived there as a child. One gets the impression Moreau is a very well-travelled guy.
That aside, I loved the review and it made me laugh a lot. :)
