I played this game, I got pretty far but I cannot remember why I played for that long, I do remember how easy it was to get absolutey stuck.

I was going to say the exact same thing. After hours of walking into villages, an ice cave, a volcano and a huge ass desert, I got stock into what was probably the last town of the game. It was so effin' dark, I couldn't see shit and it just killed my ambition of killing the last bastard.

[b]This game looks painful...............

WOW! People actually think FF8 > FF9?! Geezus..how depressing.

FF9 was one of my favorites.

don't get it twisted. When FF8 came out it blew away FF7. No one had any complaints about the game they loved it. It flew off the shelves and was on everyones wish list. At the time there was no 9-13 just 8 and 8 was the sh*t. People were amazed because of the "realistic" look they went for and that's what makes it one of the Ps1's greatest hits...

then the other games came out like 9-10-and so on and everyone pretty much started riding on the ff7 train. Mainly because that was THE introductory into the series for alot of people and they couldn't capture the same vibe as with the other games no matter what came out. Even if FF7-2 came out or what ever it still wouldn't be held as high as the original.

Atleast for me Zelda on the Nes > anything other Zelda game because that is the game that captured me into playing Zelda.

with FF7 it's pretty much the same deal. It's old and a lot of games now have surpassed it but as far as final fantasy goes no game will be able to live up to the Milestone that FF7 was out of the series.

Graphically sure, but that's about it. From my experience, the battle system was even more derided then than it is now, especially since all the people who had been introduced to RPGs through FF7 or even FF6 were expecting the exact same thing, and the "good" ways of getting spells outside of drawing repeatedly hadn't been discovered yet.

FF9 on the other hand got an even worse reception at it's release as people didn't seem to like the art or the battle system at first, so you still kind of have a point.

Most people (that play JRPGs) who are over the age of twenty played Final Fantasy from FF2 on the SNES (I know it is called 4 in Japan but the game was called 2 here) or FF3. Some started with the original and they tend to be near enough to 30 that it makes few odds (like me).

So hearing your laughable claim that FF7 was the big one really is a sign of your age. FF7 did sell more but is to many the death knell of the series. It is a great game certainly, no argument that the Materia system, the story, battle system and the graphics (for the time) were all great. However, the move to 3D removed something big from the series that has steadily increased from that point, the amount of control the player is given over the story.

When they went to pre-rendered cutscenes the games had a massive disconnect for the player between playing the game and watching it. The sudden shift in graphics and the only thing to do is press a button to read the next line of dialogue. From that game the control the player had has slipped farther and farther from the game designer's mind. FF8 you can only change two character's names and while FF9 was a throwback that tried (and somewhat succeeded) in giving the player the feeling of playing a rebuild of the older games' stories, it still had a shift when you went to the cutscenes.

FFX was when they took away pressing a button to advance all the conversations and removed the illusion of control over the character's personalities by renaming them. You can alter Tidus to anything (I chose Ballface to make the story work better) but since no one says his name it makes no difference. Basically, FFX was the first game to tell you that you aren't needed for anything more than walking to the next cutscene. Plus saving fully healing you gave the player no reason to backtrack except to pick up collectable bullshit.

And if that wasn't enough the next game FF12(I never played FF11) took combat away from the player. 13, by far the worst took away exploring towns, item shops, healing outside of combat, and control of most of the characters. I fully expect FF15 to be a painting that you walk across with no direct combat and a simple exchange of battle numbers.

The series is dead due to poor design and it really should've stopped at FF7. If they want to make movies with bad plots they should've stuck with making bomb films, not 40 hour grinds.

That sounds like Fan Dumb, specifically "They Changed It, Now It Sucks". You have a point on some of it, but the part about 7 is a stretch. All the new changes made recently are not the fault of that game. I'm glad they didn't stop there, because I really like FF9. I don't even mind 8 and ten.

He didn't even say that it was his opinion, he said other people seemed to think of FF7 that way. The age thing was pretty unnecessary.

Dude I loved this game when I was young!

A Patton Oswalt joke in the first minuite of gameplay? Moar please.

I rented this game when I was a kid, and I thought it would be cool but had no money and forgot about it. I saw it ages later when I was 18 and for some reason still thought it might still be a good game.

I pop it into my N64 and realized my kid self was an idiot.

This game defines bland, it is incredible. It doesn't even have a name, just the generic "Quest" with a "64" tacked on.

I, too, got lost in the forest as a kid, and finally did it this time around only to find out what my good friend told me, "once you finish the forest you have played all the game has to offer". I really should listen to him more often.

I had this game..and man did I hate it, not so much for the bad stuff..cause there was nothing really all that bad that I can remember, but because it had so much potential, and just ended up as totally average. Oh well can't wait for more.

Final Fantasy VIII is very near and dear to me, and holds the place as my second favorite Final Fantasy game, but Final Fantasy IX is the number one for me on that list. And this is looking like an interesting Let's Play so far, so I can't wait to see where you'll take it from here, Chad! :side:

I don't usually watch the video-game section of this site, but this video was awesome. I'm a big RPG fan myself (despite not having played a whole lot of RPG's,) and I laughed several times at your very true commentary.

Eagerly awaiting the next video.

I remember this game! My dad bought it for me, we played Ocarina Of Time together and he loved it, so he was always on the lookout for RPGs after that. And within an hour he was regretting his purchase.

I remember its really bland, if you concentrate on leveling up your elemental magic its easy peasy but its mindless grinding. I never finished it but I got pretty far, and yet I recall NOTHING about the story line.

Dunno, but I thought the NPC voice acting you did was great.

Also FF9, excellent game. Only good FF game after 6, in the long run. I admit I liked 7 in its day, but it's only good for a certain age range (which I was in at the time) and has not aged well at all, not in terms of presentation or story.
• JohnDagger
I didn't get into RPGs until KOTOR and holy shit it is now my favourite genre. Since then I have gone through all the FFs and Bioware games (even Baulder's Gate 2 which is 400 hrs long). Gotta say though, I agree with you on FF9. It's my favorite along with FF6. Still Kotor takes the cake.

how long is quest 64? how many 15 minute episode did I just dedicate myself to watch?

Check out homeboy's cow lick! He looks like Alfalfa from The Little Rascals!

"Just an echo - YOO HOO!"
*RIBBIT RIBBIT!*

Also, what kind of name is "Quest" for a fantasy RPG? That would be like a book named "Story" or an FPS named "Shoot 'Em Up".

I too remember playing this as a child. Being the intrepid boy skylark that I was, I played many an RPG and figured that this bland fantasy game would be fun.

Annnnnd.. That's all I can really say about it. There's really nothing to this game, like you said. I remember that every area you went to was drastically over-powering and the only way to get better was to obsessively search for those stupid little spirit bubbles to desperately try and power up your attacks to beat enemies that were constantly beating you to death.

Farthest I got into the game was some dark spire-type area and then I just gave up on it.
