As Sherlock Holmes said," It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts."

I'm not claiming to have followed these words, I'm just saying them.

( I can't believe I'm quoting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on a My Little Pony Retrospective. Well, at least I'm not defending TRANSFUCKING FORMERS FUCKING II AND FUCKING III. I have to say MLP: Friendship is Magic is one of the best examples of a nostalgic 80s show remade for today. Much better than some of today's adaptations for movie remakes. I would actually encourage my nieces to watch this show to get the same joy out of it that I did watching the old series as a little girl.

Also prompts for mentioning "Eeek The Cat" I LOVED that show when I was a kid. :D

Although I do have to say some of the "bronie" community I could take or leave.

    Great video CR :)

I can honestly say that the MLP season 2 premier was better and funnier than than any of the premiers on Fox's animated lineup last Sunday night.

Personally, I hate Foster's. Every character other than Mac, Frankie, Wilt and Eduardo is a total douche.

I'm actually surprised Lauren did nothing about the episodes where everyone's an arsehole to Mac, Wilt or Frankie and get away with it.

Lol, that's actually what I ENJOY about Regular Show & Penny Arcade.
  • Necronner
Really, no talk about the fanbase's fan works. Im interested in how you feel about the "Ask Pinkamina Pie" on Tumbler. It takes cupcakes and friggin rolls with it all the way to the Psycho Ward.
  • ScionVyse
    avatar
I was surprised there was no talk about the community as well. The fanbase is a big reason I got into the show myself. Oh well. He could probably do an entire episode based on the fanbase if he wanted to anyways.

Also, this needs to be sent to Equestria Daily ASAP. The herd must see this!

well, he said he was planning an episode for a "very special character" so...maybe then?
  • hellomayo
Yeah, it could be about the fan names of all of the background characters. :)
  • archiveit
I'm sort of surprised that he didn't talk about the background characters since they are such a big part of the fandom.

Well, he did put in Doctor Whooves, the Time Pony from Gallopfrey, using a voice clip of the Tenth Doctor (most popular of the Doctors to be Whooves) talking shit to the clockwork robots from the episode "The Girl in the Fireplace". Complete with tie around the head and sunglasses look from that scene.

    So that's something, I guess.

Great review, CR. I love MLP: FIM as well, though I wouldn't classify myself as a Brony. While its a shame that Faust is just now a creative consultant, her new series looks amazing. I hope the Galaxy Girls becomes a series. If this is what happened when she was involved with MLP, Galaxy Girls will rock. I consider her the Gail Simone of animation.

By the way, not all the media hates MLP. Stephen Colbert gave a shout out to the Bronies.

If you love the show, you're a brony. That's just how it is. Just like you can't have a baby in your belly but decide that you don't consider yourself "pregnant," you can't watch the show and not consider yourself a "brony."

    Welcome to the herd.
  • TB26  - That's just how it is?
I find that a little ridiculous. You can't just consider people to be "bronies", just because some people are trying to judge the show by watching it. I mean what if they're trying to see if the show is good or not? If you think that just because someone watches one episode of the show and it classifies them as said "Brony", doesn't that show you bear the sign of a prejudice?
  • lollypopalopicus
Great as always CR. hopefully this vid made a few more bronies for the herd

I better say this now...this is a trilogy...I'm planning an episode around the character that best represents the connection this show has between it's fans and it's creators (super huge clue there).

But I have very ambitious plans for an animation sequence so I'm still planning it. :)

  • Moreno X  - Hey CR!
I'm glad you said something amazingly nice about Cats Don't Dance (when you said "Douglas", were you talking to Doug Walker AKA Nostalgia Critic? If you are, you're Bronieness is growing stronger in you :P In other words, you rock dude!).

Also, I like Foster's Home a lot than I did with PowerPuff Girls (not that's it's a bad show; I like it but I prefer Foster's Home in all fairness that PowerPuffs is for girls and Foster's Home was for boys - at least that's how I see it XD). Keep it up!

PS: Another Hasbro franchise that wasn't used for years that could've been awesome to see more of it: C.O.P.S.!! It's the 1988 cartoon about futuristic cops fighting crime, made by DiC Entertainment and Hasbro. The intro is freakin' awesome. You should talk about it CR! It's familiar yet not a household name. That's your take if interested. Unless, since it is nostalgia as well, you want to team up with the Nostalgia Critic to review C.O.P.S. We shall see when you're done playing with your broni- I mean phon- I-I mean....forget it about.
  • Xzeon  - PPG only for girls?
    avatar
Many, many, many boys would disagree with that.

    Especially me.

    I love that show.
  • Moreno X
I guess "PPG is for girls" isn't my good viewpoint to comment on it. What I meant was that even PPG do have male fans that watch the show (now as I said I like it; it is the best cartoon ever created, no denying there Xzeon), but there are moments that sometimes made me to feel intolerable to sit through that are a bit too girly. I don't know why but for some reason I felt that way.

It's funny yet odd for me to say it because you're talking to a guy like me who's not a hardcore fan of PPG (it's true. Just I like from what it is and I respect it), but prefers to watch girl shows like "Kim Possible", "As Told By Ginger", "Salior Moon", "Daira", "Pepper Ann", "The Little Mermaid (the TV show, not the movie)" and of course Cybersix - Heck yeah!. Don't me wrong, I like PPG, just again not a huge fan of it. Hope this helps that I do watch girl shows ^_^*

If you are having trouble to understand me, than the best thing for you is to "forget about it".

CR, you do know that the voice actresses for the characters in FiM aren't the same voice actresses who sing in the songs, right?
  • LikaLaruku
    avatar
I'm pretty sure Pinky Pie does her own.
  • QuestionTheMajority
    avatar
The actress for Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie does Fluttershy's singing, but not Pinkie's and the actress for Applejack and Rainbow Dash does both of the ponies' singing. Rarity, Twilight Sparkle, and Pinkie Pie's singing voices are different actresses, but you wouldn't know it from hearing them.

Though I pretty much assumed Twilight's singing actress was different from the start since Tara Strong herself has admitted she's a terrible singer and... well... if you've seen any of the musical episodes of Fairly Oddparents, you know that to be true.
  • The Maskeraider
    avatar
Really? I thought Tara's a great singer. She did a fantastic job on Family Guy (way before it became unbearable). I'm pretty sure the reason she didn't sing is because they need all the actors in the studio and all of them are in Canada, while Tara is based in LA.

Ya I got sucked in by the fans myself soon after the show started. It's been so much of a hit that a subforum was started on the Transformers board I frequent. But really the show is great.

I loved having John De Lancie as the season 2 opener villian. Though the great part was the fact that it ended with a spoof on the ending of Star Wars with the medal ceremony.

I'm a bit surprised CR didn't mention the other 3 main characters with the "Cutie Mark Crusaders" as they tend to have quite a few episodes focused on them as well. Sure they are the annoying kid ponies but their antics once resulted in a 80's styled rock concert. Sure it sounded terrible, but it was the visuals that made it awesome.
  • QuestionTheMajority
    avatar
The Cutie Mark Crusaders kind of annoyed me the first time I watched the series, but on the second run-through when I was showing it to my wife (Yes, I got hooked on the show and then had to introduce my wife to it. Figure that one out), the little foals really endeared themselves to me. I think I just found their single-mindedness on cutie marks kind of irritating since I've seen the adult incarnations of them from previous generations and already know what their marks are. That and it's pretty darn obvious what each of them are best at.

While on the subject of things that are annoying, I am SO happy that CR brought up the stupid theory that Rainbow Dash is homosexual just because she's a tomboy and has a rainbow-colored mane. I have always, always, ALWAYS hated the stigma that your interests and behavioral patterns are a sign of your sexual preference, especially since several friends of mine through the years have been either very effeminate guys or very tomboyish girls who were all straight and were deeply hurt by people refusing to believe it. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not drawing any conclusions until the person is genuinely acting attracted to the same sex, thank you very much. (Naturally, that last sentence was meant to be read in a Cinema Snob voice.)
  • Lossthief
    avatar
That whole thing with Rainbow Dash is pretty irksome, even amongst fans. I've seen numerous fans swear up and down that Rainbow is totally in a relationship with one of the other casts, and it gets more than a bit annoying when they actually try reading into character interactions to get support for it.

To quote Faust herself: "She is a tomboy, but nowhere in the show is her sexual orientation ever referenced. As we all know, there are plenty of straight tomboys in the world, and assuming they are lesbians is extremely unfair to both straight and lesbian tomboys."
  • LikaLaruku
    avatar
Yeah, like how everyone assumed Pepperment Patty was gay, even though she has an established crush on Charlie Brown. But hey, if you had a thing for the biggest looser in town, you probably wouldn't go around telling everybody.

I actually banned shipping, pony breasts, & humanizing from a DA fanclub. Only perverts submit that stuff. They don't call that place "Deviant" Art for nothing.

YEY!!! I really am happy this part is finally out!

I've been stalking TGWTG every day for this~!

And I have a very good idea of what character the episode is gonna be about. I won't say anything because I don't wanta ruin it, but I can't wait!

I know animation takes awhile. So no rush. =D

BTW: If your gonna do the character I think you are, I hope you include the theries about the character (like her child/sister theroy) as well as her fan-voice on youtube.

*I probably just spoiled the whole thing huh?*

The only thing that I don't really like about the show is every time they use a pun on "pony" like: "everypony" I cringe when I hear it. I'm a fan of the show, but I do admit, there are some parts or things I don't like.

And I have to admit: "Pinkie Pie in 5 seconds" is the video that lead to the chain of events for me to become a fan of the show.

I knew this was coming from the moment I became brony. This type of show is the very essence of what Familiar Faces is. An example of a VERY good show that sadly is not as well known as it should be, but can be put back into the spotlight to help it shine again.
I love MLP:FIM, I love the fandom, and I love you're show. So to see basically all 3 in combination, put a huge smile on my face.

Amid's comments about the creator driven animation is dead thing was incredibly harsh, but OF the Cartoon Brew staff people, he is the one to get totally outrageous, that big blog being a prime example of nerd rants. However he is aware of how out there his opinions are and I think he enjoys throwing these articles out there to get people to THINK about it. A bit of make up your own opinion but I had to write mine down journalism.

Jerry Beck, the other poster, usually updates based upon what other people show him or tell him that is new in the cartoon news. He is an animation historian and done lots of wonderful DVD set ups for Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. It's possible that there wasn't a big talk on the stuff Genny T. is doing MOSTLY because it was just news, and the big discussions go on in the comments section.

Everything you said here about the MLP:FiM is wonderful and I agree. Great show. MLP Gen 4 does prove to NOT take the animation industry a step backwards but let me make a point to show what he means:
In the 80's only shows that could be turned into toys, and/or had a already established name could be made into a TV show (Ghostbusters, Flinstone Kids, Scooby Doo after Scooby Doo cartoon). Hasbro wouldn't pick up Galaxy Girls, but they would allow her to work on MLP. That is a step backwards. Instead of putting new ideas into the market, we now have an old idea repackaged.

If anything, the cartoons that are coming from Canada are a step backwards in animation IMO (Johnny Test, Almost Naked Animals, Total Drama Island, ect), but his point is right in that most networks would not pick up a show if there wasn't some well established marketable toy line to come out of it. This is why Symbionic Titan was canceled, as there weren't any plans for a toy line to come from it.

However it was a year before the Hub was announced that I was thinking about how wonderful Cartoons in the 80s' were. They had toys to fallow up with the show. So many of these kids shows today could be more interesting if you could play along with them as you hold the toy, wore the pajama set, and ate with the lunch box with them. I'm not asking for over saturations of toys and merchandise like Spongebob or Dora, but products made by people who KNOW kids want, not what they need (rectal thermometers). You know they were going to be good shows cause there was money behind them, even if the animation wasn't nearly as good was the golden years of 40's when government money was paying for the war cartoons. People bought these things cause it was an investment.

I support and disagree with the 'creator driven animation is dead' debate. I support is that studio's should be willing to take chances and allow new ideas to filter into the market (Adventure Time, Regular Show) but at the same time I disagree that it's killing creator driven cartoons. If companies like Hasbro want to pay people who made gre...

Because of its strange popularity I checked out MLP:FIM and I was pretty surprised what I saw. To be frank I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I went in but a plot was not one of them. I've only watched the first two episodes of season one because I've barely managed to finish anything recently, but I do plan to continue watching it.

Despite not expecting a plot when I went in, if I knew the team behind it in the first place I would have been eager to check it out.

Great work on the show CR, I really want this to get some of the haters off the brony communities back. I really hope that Faust leaving the MLP team won't have any adverse effects on the show or the budget that the team is getting to work with, because I wouldn't mind seeing this show last at least a couple more seasons just to correctly cement itself in the eyes of Animation greats to come. Also I just have to say to everyone reading this that CR is at least 100% right about one thing, you really need to give this show atleast one shot. I myself never cared for the franchise and just ignored for pretty much my entire life so far until about 2 months when a friend of mind showed this to me...and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. It really is quite good and even if you think you'll hate it I implore you to re-consider it. Also to anyone reading that hasn't watch the show I recommend either episode 25 or episodes 27 & 28 to try watching.
  • Hichcoot
the hate towars bronies is not just because they liking MLP ( But I think that a man in his 20s buying MLP toys for himself is beyond creepy...) the thing that people hate about bronies is how annoying they are about MLP or how agresive are about other pople not liking the show.

Yeah, I know that people shouldn't judge based on few people, but you find it everywhere.

This is how it is to me and to a lot of people

´´ I don't like MLP, it looks bad to me ``

    Bronie 1 ´´ You just don't ge it!``
Bronie 2 ´´ you sound like a really closed minded person!``
Bronie 3 ´´ Are you so insecure about your sexuality??``
Bronie 4 ´´ You just don't know how to enjoy a good cartoon!``
    Bronie 5 ´´ Go watch bayformers!!``
Bronie 6 ´´ Oh, its ok if you don't like the show.``

Personal experience and looots of discutions on Deviantart.

Still I don't hate the show, I hate the fans that act all annoying about it.
  • Fullmetal X
Unfortunately, Friendship is Magic has a section of the fanbase, which surprisingly is the outspoken minority despite how widespread it seems to be, that just gets really annoying and defensive about the show.

It's only just slightly justified with some fans, as they tend to get ridiculed for liking it and are still a bit insecure that they feel the need to get defensive about what they like. Then there are those other incredibly annoying fans that hate anyone that doesn't like the show and think it's God's gift to television...like the ones that bitched at Lupa for not mentioning it in her Princess Promenade review and won't stop flooding NChick with requests to do a review.

I'm probably not exaggerating when I say that the majority of the fanbase finds those people as annoying as you do...unfortunately, we don't know how to make them shut up either. I swear, I cringe whenever I see or hear someone say that they're trying to force their friends and family to watch it. Suggesting people watch it is one thing...but forcing? That's going too far.
  • QuestionTheMajority

Yeah. I always felt the same. I usually avoid stating it, but, I really dislike FiM. I truly do. Can I see why people like it? No. Will I try to cut them down because they do? No. Yet I know that several would do so to me if I admitted my personal opinion. Sometimes I feel like if I state that I think FiM is incredibly bland and unfunny (which I do), I might as well be saying "You know what I feel like doing today? I feel like having a bunch of people yell at me and say that I'm wrong."

Despite that, I might as well say: In my own, honest opinion, I believe that MLP: FiM does, indeed, suck, for a number of reasons. *shields self*

Look i'm the last one who will tell you that the fandome dosn't have flawes. Some fans can't see the show as anithing less than perfect and dosn't understand that differant people have diferant tasts and opinions, not realizing that others may not find the show good enogh.

That being said i just want you to remamber that all fandomes have their darksides. just try leave a negative comment on dr.who, the original starwars trilogy or any other fan base were the fans can read it, they will take your comment as a personal insult. After all fans are geeks by nature and tend to take their shows a little too seriously.

I read somewhere that Faust said the show would take a darker tone after the first few episodes of season 2, because the two parter was made with season 1 & was originally planned to be it's ending.
  • Creature SH
    avatar
Total fabrication. She said no such thing, and everything I've ever seen any member of the crew say is that they're just going to keep making the show that people like the way people have come to like it.

It's true that the two-parter was originally supposed to be the finale of season 1, but it's only more action-centered and bigscale to end the season with a bang, calling back to the way it started.
  • Lossthief
    avatar
Though, according to a few things Jason Theissen said at BronyCon, there's apparently going to be at least one more 2-parter this season, as well as a "scary" episode.

Also, he accidentally let slip they've been working on a new villain.
  • LikaLaruku

That would be for the best. When Saiyuki changed demographics from boys to adult women, they altered the show & pretty much ruined it. I don't need that again. It just shows that demograph people really don't know anything about their audiences or cant keep up with change.

You are so right about why this show has become such a success. At first, I was extremely skeptic seeing almost everyone here getting turned into ponies, and I was like WTF? To put it one way, this was the way I felt when I first heard of Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, and I Love You, Man. After watching it, I loved every single moment of every episode. Very well done. Though granted, I got bored with Pokemon, but that's besides the point.

I'm so happy to say that I am definitely a bronie! But as for Galaxy Girls, I'm also skeptic because of it's Powerpuff looks, but I'm willing to give this a try as well. Thank god for Youtube since I don't have Hub.

To quote Chris Griffon," This is Awesome!" CR, I love your editing style and can't wait for you to get the recognition you deserve. I laughed numerous times during this episode (the Dr.'s ref. was just the best one of the lot) and can't wait to see more. Yes, it is tough to see someone leave a project that you have grown to enjoy (Wed. nights became time for my son and I to watch Symbiotic Titan; alas, no more). Good for L.F., I hope she get's her project started; she has earned the credibility for certain. Will def. be supporting her in the future. But, will continue to support FF and your work here, too. Your program has become one of those that I find myself watching at, oh let's see, 1:44 AM. Great work, CR.
