I have the same Mario comic collection, and I love the Bertha/Stanley stories. Great tribute to this fine fish. Also loved the comic summaries; you could give Linkara a run for his money.

I had the original comics, not the collection. That meatball thing confused me to no end when I was younger.

Wow, I had no idea the Mario comics were that odd. Mario's kind of a douche to ol' Standley. :P The "corpulent" lady was supposed to be Bertha? I had no idea, and I've seen the Mario movie a shit ton of times. I can honestly say that I've never seen an FF that didn't teach me something. You rock, CR.

I have the comics as well and Mario's not a douche to Stanley. Stanley's a douche to everyone else. Seriously, if you've read the stories, you know exactly why Mario (and everyone else) hates Stanley. Obnoxious little prick.

As for questioning the logic of the comics, I have to wonder why someone would question the logic in anything Mario related. Bowling with giant meatballs and then eating said meatball while bored is one of the more normal things that happen in the Mario universe!

Big Bertha was also in Yoshi's Story...and also just as annoying, although much easier to avoid. Oh yes, there were nightmares about that fish.

As I had stated on DA, this may be my favorite one, thus far. The jokes are great, the set-ups are great, and the timing is perfect.

I think you may have gotten Big Bertha confused with Boss Bass. http:// www.mariowiki.com/ Boss_Bass Just trying to help! Still, a good vid, though!

And girls love Peach's Cherry? Rule 34! (lol!)
• Final Freek
Actually he got it half right. Boss Bass is the one that always goes after you on the water level while Big Bertha is the one that just kinda sits there in a patrol pattern.

I guess Big Bertha always has that little cheep with her and that is how you are suppose to tell.

I was actually terrified of the sprite as a kid. Ugly f'n thing. The Jaws bit was great. I think you meant Dodo.

I shouldn't be laughing at Peach's cherry.

But I am. :D

:D how did that ever get past the legal department ?

Hey, my comment appeared in the beginning of the video! That's awesome!!

Thank god I'm not the only one who thought the movie was pretty decent, especially the music, and I wasn't surprised Peach put that thing in her mouth, I mean with her constant "kidnappings" it seems she'll put anything in her mouth ;D
• Gamegirl24
Oh man, the memories! I actually used to own this comic too among other Mario comics. I read them over and over again as a kid. I think they're still around probably in the attic. They were great fun... thanks for bringing them up again. I'm going to look for them and reread 'em.

Honestly, I never even heard of Big Bertha before seeing this video. Yes, I was one of those rare people unaware of the pixelated behemouth that is Big Bertha. But not anymore.

Great episode of Familiar Faces though.

Omg, I thought I was the only one that still had that comic book.
I hope you do more from these comics :D

Gone the way of the dido? I'm sure you meant Dodo.

Either way, cool vid

I just think there should never have been a Mario movie, it's a story about Italian plumbers who eat mushrooms to get bigger so they can save a princess from a giant spiked turtle that can breathe fire. How in the hell could that make an even remotely intelligent live action movie script?

You know the game was partly influenced by Alice in Wonderland, right?
• batfan

While there are definite parallels between Super Mario Bros and the Wonderland stories, particularly the mushrooms, Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that people have exagerated the ammount of "influence" Wonderland had on the game.

In an interview about New Super Mario Bros Wii, Miyamoto said this:

"Some time ago I was being interviewed and I spoke about Alice in Wonderland. But it seems there was some misunderstanding and it's since been stated that I was influenced by Alice in Wonderland. That isn't the case. It's just that there has always somehow been a relationship between mushrooms and magical realms. That's why I decided that Mario would need a mushroom to become Super Mario."

I think I know what Stephanie Meyer was eating when she decided to make vampires sparkle.

I don't love those "reboots" at all... I reserve my right to be angry about things not being true to their source material... especially when they claim they are...

Big Bertha... so what's the name of the really big fish in Mario 64... is that Big Bertha too? (You know, the one stuck in the pipe)

Ummmm, the mushrooms are magic... not the ones the plumbers eat, but the ones the writers eat... in all seriousness, I didn't mind the fact that it wasn't really like the games, I minded the fact that it was poorly paced, the dialogue was crappy, and it was just boring. Not to mention they were egotistical enough to state that there would be a sequel.

I used to make ice tray Popsicles out of that soda... I loved eating Peach's Cherry... Bad joke I know, but I had to make it.

Awesome video CR! Big Bertha terrified me playing Mario 3 as a child, but as I got better I started to feel bad for her not being able to keep up. Now I understand why:

She only wants to be loved.
• xtlhogciao
This wasn't the Big Bertha I was expecting. At the arcade by my house as a kid there was a game called Big Bertha. It was a fat woman whose stomach would inflate while you threw plastic balls in her mouth for tickets. I want to say it was about 1994 when they got rid of that thing. I don't know if it was because of the fact that it was kind of degrading or because it was so loud and obnoxious. Bertha constantly yelled "feed me more!".

Man I loved that old comics collection, I wish I still had it.

I agree about the hidden elements but the movie still sucked.
• ReesiePuffs
avatar
I totally agree with you on the movie!!! I've always had that same stance, but NO ONE listened to me! There are great references to the games, and the world of the movie is just as creative. Hell, if the movie was just like the games, it would make no sense and flop just as much as the real movie did!

Also, nice Simpsons clip at the end to the "Fish Called Selma" episode where Troy McClure has a fish fetish!

I wouldn't try to make too much sense out of the Mario comics... They just didn't even try to make their stories coherent from what I remember.

Bertha is definitely one of the more annoying enemies in SMB3. Makes sense that the mother of all cheeps would be the 'cheapest' one of all.

RIP K*B Toys. You made going to the mall as a child that much more fun as I spent my time browsing through your over-priced goods and rarely buying anything.

This seems like a very strange comic. Everyone seems out of character, especially the princess. I do, however, love Peaches Cherry. . . and her soda.
Zing!
• Alfred Mordeir

I think the dumbest thing about that comic was that the princess sent Mario out to get berries for her cereal, but she has milk poured in her cereal before she even sends him out, and tells him to hurry back before it gets soggy. Is that bitch fucking nuts?
• LikaLaruku

I've on played Mario 1 for sure, Mario 2 possibly.

Lol, I think I prefur this incarnation of Peach/Daisy. Also, the red hair is nice. I have a friend who has Mario Tennis images on her wall >_>

Haha, was that from a YouTube Poop?
• Alfred Mordeir

Ah, shit, I actually had that comic book. Not the hard cover compilation, but that specific issue of the comic book. And it was also pretty much the only comic book I ever remember buying, ever.
• Limecat
Maybe Princess Peach has Pica.

Wasn't Stanley also the name of the guy who replaced Mario in the Donkey Kong games, before Nintendo dumped him in the pit of forgotten characters along with Foreman Spike?
