07.03.2010 - 22:11 | jareddm3I had the original comics, not the collection. That meatball thing confused me to no end when I was younger.

Wow, I had no idea the Mario comics were that odd. Mario's kind of a douche to ol' Standley. :P The "corpulent" lady was supposed to be Bertha? I had no idea, and I've seen the Mario movie a shit ton of times. I can honestly say that I've never seen an FF that didn't teach me something. You rock, CR.

I have the comics as well and Mario's not a douche to Stanley. Stanley's a douche to everyone else. Seriously, if you've read the stories, you know exactly why Mario (and everyone else) hates Stanley. Obnoxious little prick.
As for questioning the logic of the comics, I have to wonder why someone would question the logic in anything Mario related. Bowling with giant meatballs and then eating said meatball while bored is one of the more normal things that happen in the Mario universe!

07.03.2010 - 22:13 | That AlienBig Bertha was also in Yoshi's Story...and also just as annoying, although much easier to avoid. Oh yes, there were nightmares about that fish.

07.03.2010 - 22:18 | SpotTheShingoI think you may have gotten Big Bertha confused with Boss Bass. http:// www.mariowiki.com/ Boss_Bass Just trying to help! Still, a good vid, though!
And girls love Peach's Cherry? Rule 34! (lol!)
-
07.04.2010 - 00:41 | Final FreekActually he got it half right. Boss Bass is the one that always goes after you on the water level while Big Bertha is the one that just kinda sits there in a patrol pattern.

I guess Big Bertha always has that little cheep with her and that is how you are suppose to tell.

07.03.2010 - 22:29 | FungiGamerThank god I'm not the only one who thought the movie was pretty decent, especially the music, and I wasn't surprised Peach put that thing in her mouth, I mean with her constant "kidnappings" it seems she'll put anything in her mouth ;D

07.03.2010 - 22:41 | Gamegirl24Oh man, the memories! I actually used to own this comic too among other Mario comics. I read them over and over again as a kid. I think they're still around probably in the attic. They were great fun... thanks for bringing them up again. I'm going to look for them and reread 'em.

07.03.2010 - 22:59 | CaptainAndy27I just think there should never have been a Mario movie, it's a story about Italian plumbers who eat mushrooms to get bigger so they can save a princess from a giant spiked turtle that can breathe fire. How in the hell could that make an even remotely intelligent live action movie script?

While there are definite parallels between Super Mario Bros and the Wonderland stories, particularly the mushrooms, Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that people have exagerated the ammount of "influence" Wonderland had on the game.
In an interview about New Super Mario Bros Wii, Miyamoto said this:
"Some time ago I was being interviewed and I spoke about Alice in Wonderland. But it seems there was some misunderstanding and it's since been stated that I was influenced by Alice in Wonderland. That isn't the case. It's just that there has always somehow been a relationship between mushrooms and magical realms. That's why I decided that Mario would need a mushroom to become Super Mario."

Big Bertha... so what's the name of the really big fish in Mario 64... is that Big Bertha too? (You know, the one stuck in the pipe)

Ummmm, the mushrooms are magic... not the ones the plumbers eat, but the ones the writers eat... in all seriousness, I didn't mind the fact that it wasn't really like the games, I minded the fact that it was poorly paced, the dialogue was crappy, and it was just boring. Not to mention they were egotistical enough to state that there would be a sequel.
I used to make ice tray Popsicles out of that soda... I loved eating Peach's Cherry... Bad joke I know, but I had to make it.

07.03.2010 - 23:54 | xtlhogciaoThis wasn't the Big Bertha I was expecting. At the arcade by my house as a kid there was a game called Big Bertha. It was a fat woman whose stomach would inflate while you threw plastic balls in her mouth for tickets. I want to say it was about 1994 when they got rid of that thing. I don't know if it was because of the fact that it was kind of degrading or because it was so loud and obnoxious. Bertha constantly yelled "feed me more!".

I totally agree with you on the movie!!! I've always had that same stance, but NO ONE listened to me! There are great references to the games, and the world of the movie is just as creative. Hell, if the movie was just like the games, it would make no sense and flop just as much as the real movie did!
Also, nice Simpsons clip at the end to the "Fish Called Selma" episode where Troy McClure has a fish fetish!

I wouldn't try to make too much sense out of the Mario comics... They just didn't even try to make their stories coherent from what I remember.
Bertha is definitely one of the more annoying enemies in SMB3. Makes sense that the mother of all cheeps would be the 'cheapest' one of all.
RIP K*B Toys. You made going to the mall as a child that much more fun as I spent my time browsing through your over-priced goods and rarely buying anything.
