03.14.2010 - 00:27 | the weird 1what is the name of that song you used when the numbers flashed up? I must have it! :woohoo:
-
That song is a fiddle version of "Lord of the Dance" (and yes, it IS a must have).
And thank you CR for giving some much needed tribute to a quarter of my heritage. I had my fingers crossed that Secret of Kells would be featured somewhere, let alone top the list. It's always refreshing to see animated products of lesser experienced nations, and from the clips I've seen, I have to add it to my list of must-see movies.
P.S. I'm sure it's legit that Joker is of Irish decent, but I always thought that clip was just a throw away gag. Besides, trusting the Joker's words is about as safe as an umbrella for a parachute.

Actually Irish animation studios are among the top rated in the world at the moment.

03.14.2010 - 15:04 | Formula Fox@EarthboundXE: Not surprising you'd never heard of Vaultron. Gold Digger doesn't get enough love. It is an awesome series. Vaultron is only a minor group in the MASSIVE character list(a series of books containing 2-3 page writeups lasted more than ten issues and the collection was more than two inches thick), and far from the greatest overall. That says something.

Dude, you win many internets for mentioning Snatch. I love that movie so much. Ironically, though I am Scott-Irish and that's a British (I think) film, it took the review of a close Swedish friend of mine to make me check it out. Yay for multinational awesomeness!
That with the number one character, though... Is that out? Like, on DVD or anything? The art style alone is getting me interested and I'd love to see it.

Gotta call a few on this list.
First is the Joker. Now just so you know, I LOVE the Joker, he's not only one of my favorite villians of all time, but also my favorite comic book character. And yes, I was a huge fan of his BEFORE Dark Knight.
However, I can't find any evidence in any media format that he is of Irish decent. And as for that clip you showed, knowing the Joker he was most likely just pulling that to make a pun, and we can't take it seriously.
As for Mickey O'Neil, that's a bit closer. But I'm pretty sure he's more of a gypsy (or pikey as the movie calls them). Jason Stathem even makes says so when mentioning the impossible-to-understand pikey accent. "It's not really english, and it's not really irish".
But that #1 spot looks interesting, and I'll have to check it out.
And yeah, I'm also a filthy mutt of un-determinable decent. Off the top of my head, I'm of Irish, Itallian, Croatian, German, Polish, Scottish, Swedish, and French Canadian decent. In other words, I'm absolutely nothing.

-
03.14.2010 - 03:17 | PuppetShowJusticeHalf-irish here.
I'm not sure I believe the Joker though. He could just as easily have been making a terrible pun. He did that pretty regularly in the old Batman: The Animated Series. And I'm pretty sure his character is often considered a compulsive liar.

There's one person you left off this list: Ned Kelly, my honest-to-God, hand to heart, take my hat off my head, spit on the ground ancestor, who was the subject of multiple movies: The first full length feature ever made, another starring Mick Jagger, and another starring Heath Ledger, with my family's actual folk song in the soundtrack. I know I would've put him on my list. He even made a suit of armor and squared off with the British military!
Irish monster movies? You forgot one! Clive Barker's Rawhead Rex. And you could also put a lot of Clive Barker's lead characters on the list as well.
And I'm not 100% about this, but Susan from the Dark Tower series might be Irish as well. It's worth checking out.
Also, I don't celebrate St. Paddy's Day. As it is in America, it was invented as a way to poke fun at the Irish way back in the day. The Irish were treated as like Mexicans are by Neo-cons: the unwashed, uneducated, willing to rob and kill you and rape your daughters and wife (and possibly sons too) and drive the morals and values of 'Merica out of the country. Bunch of rocks and nonsense in my opinion.
-
03.14.2010 - 06:21 | navvyshanekar
one thing, susan from the dark tower's surname is delgado which isn't the most Irish surname & I don't think they have an Ireland in mid world or in world or whatever. Susannah dean is black but she might have some irish ancestor. Another thing, Paddy's day in America was created by the Ancient Order of Hibernians an organisation that Protected the Irish from the neocons of the 19th century, the Know Nothing Party. The fact that it's become associated with stereotypes, which when compared to the 19th century view that the Irish were subhuman apes are fairly harmless, is a result of the fact that all people get stereotyped in America. If it were p.c people would go around wearing pointy hats & slanting their eyes at chinese new year

03.20.2011 - 14:08 | Lucia32Yeah, but he did stop the human sacrifice and ritual the gang rape which some of the Pagan cults indulged in so I'd say that St. Pat did pretty good.
Besides, the Yule logs and eggs? Secular traditions. Fun for everyone!

03.14.2010 - 05:39 | HagridandfangGotta say, I'm Irish, and I was not at all happy with this list... until number 1 that is, though I can't honestly blame you for choosing all of those Irish stereotypes, as well as Americans who call themselves Irish. But just for good measure, here's a short list of ACTUAL Irish characters:
•Father Ted - Kind of obvious really. A lot of people have already pointed this out. Although, to be fair, while the all the actors in the series are Irish, and the writers for it were also Irish, it's actually owned by a British company, and was first shown on Channel 4 in the UK.
•Dustin the Turkey - If you don't know who he is you can't call yourself Irish, it's as simple as that. This character has been everywhere in Ireland. Starting off as a simple puppet presenting children's programming, he soon became a runaway success. He got several albums made for his, frankly terrible, singing, he got his own show, Dustin's Daily News, he took part in the Eurovision Song Contest, and even ran for president under the pseudonym Dustin Hoffman. Heck, he even said he wanted to be president of the USA!
•Dan Clancy - Ah Killinaskully, one of the best sitcoms (If not THE best) owned by RTÉ. Dan Clancy is rarely seen anywhere but the Pub in the quiet town of Killinaskully, but he's certainly not a quiet man himself! He's an outright hilarious character, and one of the only ones to have his own catchphrase. If he ever needs to go to the loo, up he gets, announcing that he has to "Strain the spuds".
•Podge & Rodge - Though these are two characters, they are almost always seen together. These evil puppets started out, again, on a children's television strand. Since eventually left, starting up their own show. An adult comedy show, no less. That's right, characters who started out entertaining the kiddies, are now telling extremely adult jokes, which led to their absolute success to this day.
•Bull McCabe - An old Irish man who ends up killing for farm land. The Field is a great movie, and it really shows the torment this character goes through. He truly loves his son, but unfortunately hasn't taught him right from wrong, and they end up killing the American businessman. Remember, the family who kills together, stays together ;)
So that was just a short list of characters who are truly Irish, not just characters with fake Irish accents, or Americans who call themselves Irish, and I hope you all learned something new today. Oh, and a happy early St. Patrick's Day to you all.

03.14.2010 - 05:56 | TheBritGotta point out some absentees from the list;
-The entire cast of "Father Ted". So many greats
-Red from "The Shawshank Redemption" (does he count? I'm not sure whether his Irish comment is meant to be taken literally or not, but the book version was definitely an Irishman)
-Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. I know she's another one where the casting of the actors has made it tough to choose. But in the movie continuity she's definitely Irish.
-Roy from "The IT Crowd", one of the best sitcoms in recent years and a very funny nerdy everyman who also just happens to be Irish
-One could possibly consider Barney from The Simpsons, not only due to his alcoholism but also because of his Irish tenor singing voice. I've always thought of the character as at least a little bit Irish
-Anybody played at any point by Brendan Gleeson or Liam Neeson
And probably countless others. Still a nice list though

I like the choice you made for the st paddy's day list, and on a side note, yay to the american celebration of st. patrick's day where we commemorate our irish heritage by acting like the stereotypical tv/movie irish by getting all liquored up and stupid. (c'mon ppl, smile, it's my failed attempt at humor)

03.14.2010 - 06:10 | navvyshanekar
the number 2 character on the list appears to be doing a russian scottish accent. The one character that's glaringly absent is Frank Costello from The Departed, the greatest Irish American villain ever. He's a psycho killer & a blasphemer. There's also the Burns brothers from The Australian movie the proposition. Their slightly crappy accents are offset by the awesomeness of that film. The twins Nuada & Nuala from Hellboy 2 are also Irish, that language they're speaking is old gaelic And who could forget Starfleet's top Paddy Miles O'Brien who was in star trek TNG & DS9.

#86 got her accent from her Mum.
Her mum is first introduced in season 3, episode 6, "Operation: S.L.U.M.B.E.R." and it is strange #86 is part of an organisation that is constantly trying to defeat her dad and his organisation of kid hating adults. Her dad was introduced in season 1, episode 5, "Operation: O.F.F.I.C.E." but we don't discover that he is #86's DAD till way later i assume ether season 4 or 5 we found that out.
Even stranger the character "Father" is #1's uncle we find this out in the movie operation Zero (so the entire show is ironic in some way  )
