nice review, and I have to agree with your assessment of the difference between the two shows. Ben 10 was a lot of fun (live action movie not counted), while Alien Force was super serious, at the expense of enjoyable episodes. Also, Alien X was somewhat of a neat idea, but the actual mechanics make him nothing but a time waster...

01.23.2012 - 00:25 | neko.lazorLove your stuff CR :) I felt this was kinda relevent to me, since I really do love cartoon network. I'm actually a huge generator rex fan and was surprised you mentioned it :D even if you don't care for it XP

So, you become stronger by getting more cards, but if I'm not mistaken, the only way to get more cards than your opponent is to lose at fights. And the only way to die is by losing all of your cards, but the only way to lose cards is by attacking. Am I missing a rule here? Maybe cards in your hand count as discarded?

Ben 10 on the other hand...not so much. Alien Force and Ultimate got steadily worse, to the point where they're not even trying anymore. Of course, I didn't like Alien Force when it basically said that magic didn't exist in their universe...for no real reason except to give Gwen a super powered form she could use in special episodes (and to push out a new toy).
The dialogue suffers especially, although it does provide some of the most humorous (accidental) moments, like Kevin screaming out "Snake Venom Buuuuuuuurns!" XD
Still, a nice episode, it looks like the TCG suffers from poor execution like Alien Force and Ultimate.

How I agree with you good sir. But I guess, like spongebob, their gonna milk this series until their is nothing left but powder, if that makes sense.
Also dude, I have 3 words for you. DUNGEON DICE MONSTERS. You can only get the starter set at amazon but still I recommend you give this one a look.
If not, that is fine, just a suggestion.

Something else I figured would make a good review.
You said your a fan of batman the brave and the bold yes? Well here is what I have in mind, you and PAW review the musical episode. I dont know how much material you and he would get from it though. Again just a suggestion.

01.23.2012 - 11:40 | the gangsta of loveI hate ben. You know how most superhero's save people because they have an overwhelming sense to do good? Or because of something deep and life changing that happened in their past that made them want to stand up? Ben's not like that. He saves the day because it's cool, and he thinks it makes him look cool, and then he constantly brags about how great he is like a complete and utter tool. and unlike iron man where he brags about how cool he is, he's not all that funny or entertaining. He's just being a douce
When he was 10 he was a brat but let's face it kids can be brats at times and I just thought to myself, he'll grow out of it, but nope. He now embodies everything annoying about teenagers. He's self-centered, egotistical, mouthy (and not the funny kind), and wants to get a lot done by doing as little work as he can, like a slacker.

THIS IS THAT DIGIMON TCG!
-
01.23.2012 - 15:33 | kureveeThere was a Movie between Ben10 and Ben10 Alien Force that has the Omnitrix being taken off Ben, and Grampa saying that he should rest on the whole being a hero for awhile. That is why in Alien Force Ben had it off and to remember where he hid it.
-
01.23.2012 - 16:00 | kureveeThe Movie also explained why he had to have it off. It's not the best movie in the world, but it does answer the questions to why Alien Force started the way it did.

I agree when I stated watching the first season. I liked it then I felt it was starting to drag and become repetitive and then I tried starting to watch it Alien Force several months later and I just can't get into like I did the first season...maybe I just need to start at the beginning and watch it all the way through.

As my avatar suggests & some of the other posters know,as shallow this reason seeems to other but the Gwevin pairing makes hard for me to watch the new series: it's shoehorned,it forces you to not only like but think it's clever(Gee, one mean the female of the group goes with the only male who isn't related to her & is a bad boy?), it panders to stupid honry Pre-Teen & Teenage girls, and worse of all it's completely distracting. This was Dwayne McDuffie at his worst;he should just made Teen romance series. I wouldn't mind that Ben & Kevin didnt beome a couple, they atleast have a lot of cool bromance moments & actaully deveolop their friendship.
I think Doug Walker said it best is "Just Show A Life"; just show the trio interact with each other and learn from each other. The Romance is best is devolped when it's untientional.
Generator Rex is a much better show & takes adventange of the Bromance of Rex & Noah.

01.24.2012 - 01:53 | Fenrir MoridinYeah, the relationship is definitely forced, and it basically fails at what they're trying to do.
Either 1, they're trying to introduce romantic subplots, which tend to be the bane of most superhero stories.
Or 2, they're trying to reduce the amount of fanshipping between Ben and Gwen...which is futile, both because you can't really stop shipping, but mostly because they continue to write odd subtext into the dialogue.
Oh, and when Ben isn't with Julie for a couple of episodes he falls for a prototype Omnitrix which sampled and randomized Gwen's DNA. I don't even know if that should count as creepy, but it bothers me immensely.
-
10.20.2012 - 19:01 | avionpiscean33Oh good. I'm not the only one who is uncomfortable with Ben liking Eunice due to her being formed from his cousins dna.

I hated Ben 10 Alien Force. I mean, it doesnt just screw up continuity with the previous show, but it also screws up its own continuity. There was one episode where Ben's parents find out Ben was an alien despite Ben's dad finding out at the end of the last series, Then there was one point where Kevin has a Cell phone, even though he does say in one episode he doesnt have one, And then they let Ben use the phone WHEN HE WAS GROUNDED AND SPECIFICALLY TOLD NOT TO USE THE PHONE! HOW DO YOU DO THAT?!?!?! HOW DO YOU SCREW UP CONTINUITY FROM THE LAST SHOW, THIS SHOW, AND THIS EPISODE ALL IN ONE EPISODE! HOW!!! I could go online, like how Every single Plumber has a grandkid whos Half Alien, INCLUDING GWEN! THATS JUST LIKE WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!! This is just stupid. I could go on.

Just a heads up, if you come across the Power Rangers card game from a couple of years ago, it is the same exact game of compare against one of 3 stats, except I think they add an extra digit on the end if I recall correctly.
Kinda surprised at the harsh words for Alien Force, but then I've only seen a couple of episodes from the original series.

Oh? So I'm not the only one who can't stand Alien force. While I watch Ben 10 infrequently, I did see it enough to recognize certain characters and actually liked the show. Alien force is just so slow and dry, when cartoon network mentioned that Generator Rex was made by the makers of Ben 10 I was hesitant to watch it for that reason, but I'm glad I did because it's gone to become one of my favorite cartoons. Oh right, this comment should be about that card game too...
Well the battle mechanics seem interesting but with a lack of fleshed/thought out rules, I can imagine an interest mechanic would sooner become frustrating.

Yeah Ben 10 Alien Force was the downfall of the Ben 10 franchise, and don't forget the AWFUL live action movie they had.
I have to admit when I heard the creators of Ben 10 where the creators for Generator Rex, I had my doubts. I have to say Generator Rex is a MUCH BETTER show. It's one of my favorite shows ever.
The plot and charaters make the show just awesome. And the issues they tackle are really mature, like war, prejudice, deciding wich side your on, it's a very complex show.
So I would give it a watch.
-
01.26.2012 - 03:50 | LermontThe people behind Rex are who were responsible for the original Ben 10. The retcons and the "for cereal" atmosphere are the doings of the new team that received the franchise and made AF. Kind of makes you sad when you remember that the people who made the campy and fun Ben plain and boring are the same people who brought us Teen Titans.
Huh, apparently Man of Action also overlapped with the Teen Titan crew, didn't know that. They were the better part of it apparently.

I just marathoned all the Cheap Damage episodes in one sitting, and I must say: They're frigging awesome.
I registered just so that I could say: make more of these! I'd love to see this turn into a periodic series (once a week, once every two weeks, once a month or something like that) because Cheap Damage kicks arse.
Thanks a lot so far, it'll be interesting what comes up next. :D
