Let's get Dangerous! Regarding Disney DVD releases, yeah, that sucks. Same thing goes for our copies of Gargoyles. We have Season 1, and Season 2 volume 1, but they never released S2V2 (or Goliath Chronicles, but I can live without that show).

Sorry to the creators that I had to download the missing episodes but, if they ever get released, I will buy them, just as I did the short lived comic series as well as 'Bad Guys' that took place after the show.
  • Fan01  - Whoo! Megavolt!
Love that guy! He was Darkwing's archenemy and he was possibly the overall most powerful villain in the show. His team-ups with Darkwing were fun(ny) as well.

All of the villains were great, (being a Teen Titans fan I loved the Fearsome 5) but Megavolt was my favorite for the reasons you gave as well as being Darkwing's archenemy even though Negaduck was the bigger threat.

I'll admit, I haven't seen much of this. But that clip you showed of Darkwing saying goodbye to his daughter when he died brought out a few tears.

I honestly don't remember if I watched this show as a kid... though I kinda wish I did. Damned lack of foresight...

Anyway, great retrospective, I really gotta look into it now (plus the comic books)...

A moment of silence for the "Darkwing Duck Central" Youtube Channel. It closed before I finished watching every episode

I saw the whole Darkwing Duck show on bootleg dvd at a stand at Wizard World once. I still regret not getting it.

Darkwing Duck will always be #1, with Cole McGrath close second.

As a fan of Ducktales and of this show, I was happy to know you'd be reviewing it!

That out of the way, I've got some things to add. One, on Morgana, I LOVED her character. Certainly one of the best of the side ones, and given a real progression arc of her own (though interspersed among the episodes) she was well written and well introduced. You can't deny her staying power within the show. I'm glad she became a major part of the cast.

Second, you mentioned that Dark Wing/Drake was unique because of his devotion as a father. You forgot to mention that his devotion is also unique as he ADOPTED Goslin. Now that shouldn't be a big issue but to me it makes him even better of a superhero and character, because he didn't have to adopt Goslin, didn't have to have her as his official daughter- Bruce Wayne never formally adopted his 'charges' after all. They retained their old names. Goslin went from legally being Waddelmire to Mallard. That's an amazing amount of love right there. He loved her enough to make her his real child. And that touched my heart.

I remember watching this show on Swedish television in the 90's during my middle-school years. For the time I thought it was pretty hardcore. Sadly it was banned because it was deemed too violent. At the time there was some story going on about some idiot kids that managed to get their friend killed, supposedly inspired by the show.
  • voxa.m.
I kept thinking B.B. was saying "band episode" instead of "banned episode". Couldn't figure out how a deal with the devil led to a bunch of musical numbers, but, hey, if Buffy can do it... ;)

That Darkwing Duck rap song still haunts my nightmares.

I remember watching this show everyday after school. I taped a few episodes when I was younger but they have long since been broken. This show will always be one of my favorite cartoons. Even to this day sometimes I find myself singing the Darkwing Duck theme song.
  • Soapy_Meadows  - That one episode where they know they're in a show
I'm surprised you didn't make the comparison seeing as you're a Buffy fan but that kind of reminds me of the asylum episode in season....6 was it?

That episode sort of confused fans too because on one hand, they continued as if the asylum part was actually the hallucination but the way it ended actually sort of made it seem like the Buffy show we know and love was the delusion. It sort of seemed to negate everything that had happened to the characters in a similar way to that DW episode you mentioned.

Regardless, I loved this show as a kid. I own that exact volume 1 DVD that you showed with the episodes all out of order and everything (though I haven't opened it because of that fact.. just went online to watch them) It's a really really good show that I almost feel like I get more out of now then I did watching it as a kid.

I am glad I'm not the only one who loved that show. I feel the same way about the DVD's. Saban is just now finally releasing shows like Digimon in the US and it's in small volumes with only about 6 20 min episodes a piece on each disk. They are dragging it out way to much.
  • Technous285

Saban's licensed the DVD production of MMPR through Lost Galaxy (first 7 years) on a 40-disc boxset to Shout!Factory earlier this year, whilst Lionsgate Entertainment takes care of Super/Samurai.
Fox continues to put out the DVD's of the movies (MMPR:TM & T:APRM) in a trickle (as opposed to hold back for a few years, then fresh wave of updated discs), seeing as they own pretty much everything about both movies (sans actors, script writers for T:APRM, franchise rights and toyline. Toyline is Bandai America, rest was Saban).
Buena Vista Home Entertainment (Disney) put out 5-volume (3-5 eps per volume) 'releases' of Ninja Storm through Mystic Force, but it's probable those are gonna be eventually replaced in collection sets (like MMPR-LG) by S!F when they get to it, seeing as Saban bought EVERYTHING Power Rangers related back from Disney, and is licensing (US and maybe UK at last) Shout!Factory for DVD sets (currently unknown who will be handling the Asia-Pacific releases in Australia, New Zealand and the like, possibly Madman Entertainment).

Loved this show as a kid. Not only was it fun and a great show, my uncle worked on it doing prop designs for one of his first jobs with Disney.

Wasn't there an episode where all of Darkwing Duck's vilains combined into a giant with all their powers?
  • zepolmas  - Technicaly no...
Nega-duck used some device to steal powers from the other villians in the frightful 5.
  • qazox

Yep. It was the episode that helped bring about "The Justice Ducks", i think.

Damn I thought it was just Gargoyles that got the dvd shaft.

The first season and a half are done, but the epic trip to Avalon and the resulting world tour, as well as the 2-part showdown with Oberon AND the 3 part ending not on dvd?

    S'fucking crime.
  • zepolmas  - Something that might be interesting...
The Frightful five are an almost complete set of super-villian achetypes, representing the basic super-criminals every hero must face eventually.

    Nega-duck - Dark Mirror/Evil twin
    Bushroot - Evil plant master
    Liquidator - Elemental
Quackerjack - Evil toymaker/clown/perversion of childhood
    Mega-Volt - master of electricity

It's not a meaningless fanboy gripe. I'm still waiting for the last 24 episodes of Ducktales, Fillmore, Recess, and Pepper Ann. And maybe Weekenders.
  • Floweramon
    Wow, such nostalgia ^_^

Though if you like Ducktales, I highly recommend checking out the comic book 'The Life And Times of Scrooge McDuck' and its companion book. They're sadly out of print and expensive (as you said, Disney is horrible about releasing their stuff), but there are scans online. In addition, I would also recommend looking for the story 'The Old Castle's Other Secret or A Letter From Home' as it ties up a loose end from the Life and Times nicely.

Buster, just a heads up; the verizon ad for this video refused to end. I had to reload the page in order to watch you.
  • jutuomin  - I can say the same thing about Disney..
I have one volume of DuckTales which are just episodes out of order..
And it seems it is impossible to find any more volumes. And if I could they still don't make up all the episodes (in 3 volumes that I know of).

    Stupid, stupid, stupid!

One of my favourite shows as a child, and of course Darkwing is based off of my favourite superhero as well (The Dark Knight)! It's too bad that the Darkwing Duck DVD sets aren't great. I've been meaning to watch the show again.

This now makes me sad that there was never a crossover show with Duck Dodgers. Impossible for Disney and Warner to cooperate, I know, but those two shows would fit perfectly together. Besides, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Wreck-it Ralph have both proven that nothing is impossible.

Speaking of which, what are your thoughts on the Duck Dodgers series? I haven't seen much of it, but I like the episode with Dodgers playing with Megadeth and the one where he becomes Green Lantern.
  • Archedgar
    Agreed, brilliant show.

I also watched it when I was young.

    5/5
  • fangirl21  - Just one more thing...
It makes sense that in one universe that Drake/Darkwing is The 'Ducktor' (pardon the pun, lols)! I mean, come on! His hideout and plane are bigger on the inside, he has all these gadgets that are useful (though sometimes break) and have complicated (and sometimes actually accurate) science behind them, and his origins are completely ambiguous/a total mystery! And that's in the KNOWN UNIVERSE that we've seen in the show!

If in one universe he's The Ducktor, then perhaps there he's a Time Mallard who travels in an old Toll Booth, with Goslin and Launchpad as his companions (Morgana is his River Song, maybe?), and his nemsis is The Master Duck (Negaduck). Megavolt creates Cyberducks, the Daleks aren't squids but Tadpoles inside of frog-shaped robot bodies!
  • Lockenlord
Darkwing Duck gets way too little coverage on tgwtg. I loved it as a kid and even my dad loved it and watched it with me and my siblings. I torrented the complete series a couple of years ago but never got around to watch it. But given how many references I aparantly have missed back then that now seems inevitable.
