Really? All films with the Aliens are stupid? That must be why the first two are generally considered to be some of the best films ever made in their respective genres. Yeah, Alien 3 and defiantly Resurrection are not up to the level of the first two films, but AvP and especially AvP-R, take it to a whole new level.

01.09.2012 - 05:46 | LighticeSorry, but neither Alien or Aliens are stupid, and even Alien 3 is OK if you think it as an independent work. But damn does everything related to AvP suck. I'm not even fan of the old comics. It sounds like a good idea on paper, and it could make some awesome video games if they didn't keep botching them up, but as a story it's just silly.
Incidentally, it annoys me how blatantly this movie breaks the basic rules of the Alien franchise; there's no way that the Queen would attack something with her embryo incubating inside it, and there's no damn way that the embryo could survive a tail in the chest.
By the way, why "tribe", Buster? It's a massive city, a pretty huge difference from tribal civilization.

I liked this review :) Good job man.
Could I be annoying and ask request you to review Queen of the Damned? They screwed up SO much from the book. For one thing, they made Lestat a BRUNETTE... HOW DO YOU DO THAT?!! They miss key elements from the plot, the other vampires, Akasha's motivations and so on an so on.

I always felt this was a dissapointing Origin Story/Prequal to an awesome AVP movie with Colonial Marines being fucked over by Wayland-Yutani that unfortunately never existed.
As for it's sequal I think it does AVP a lot better but in it's dedication to break all the horror movie cliches it goes way over the top.

01.09.2012 - 14:32 | DMasterActually...I second this notion. I don't know if it had a Hollywood budget, but it was definitely stupid. You know who they got to play Norman Bates? VINCE VAUGHN.

01.09.2012 - 14:39 | locuasfrom what we see in predator 1 and 2 (predators i'm not sure, but i'm focusing in the movies previous to this one)i believe the predators consider humans as hunters too rather than preys, since they don't attack unarmed people, children nor pregnant women. Since she was still alive, and fighting the alien, they considered the hunting wasn't over yet.

I like this movie fine. I grew up on Aliens and Predator, but the Aliens thing actually scared me enough when I was younger that I got nightmares from it. (I was about six, I think. I grew up on horror movies and suchlike.) I thought the friendship between the woman and the predator was kind of cute. It certainly showed he approved of her bravery and honor. It may seem stupid, but that's my feeling on it.
I would second the notion to do Queen of the Damned, but that might not be something you would do. Lestat's not only a brunette in it (wrong) but he was made by Marius and brought up by him (wrongo!). They completely take out several key characters. They at least made Armand look about what he should. The only really good thing I can say about it is that the music is fucking killer. I Love the music from that and if that's what Lestat's band sounded like then by God I don't doubt the panties drop when he opens his mouth.

Okay, I shouldn't be looking for realism or continuity in this movie, but if an Alien in a Predator makes a completely different subspecies, why does the same not happen when Aliens incubate in humans? Or are the Aliens that we've had before always fed on humans? Is the pure Alien a completely different creature? If so, how did they exist before humans stumbled along?
Okay, my brain hurts now.

01.23.2012 - 02:51 | DMasterAll I know is, when Paul W.S. Anderson is involved, however indirectly, logic is a more foreign concept than somebody thinking Afternoon Delight is a good song.

I actually liked this movie when it 1st came out... mostly because I was a big fan of the comics and other movies! And I'd been waiting years to see an Alien and Predator crossover movie! This one did disappointed with the director chosen and the fact they made it PG13 not an R-rated film like all the Alien and Predator movies before it!
I liked AVP:R a lot more than this one because they did fix those problems! And the creatures acted more like they did in the past movies with viciousness and brutality! Also I loved the hybrid Pred-alien!

01.09.2012 - 18:46 | cannedfuryCapcom's old AvP arcade game was the best thing that came out of these crossovers. Aside from possibly the greatest Final Fight style beat 'em up, playing through it felt like you watched a better blockbuster than these movies. It's practically a wishlist of everything the flicks should have done.
@Snarkaholic
The alien in 3 was a speedy quadruped because it came from a dog. They adapt to whatever species they're wiping out, and they were found as eggs so we don't know what they looked like before. Which is a neat trait the movies need to stop dropping the ball on.

01.09.2012 - 22:52 | ArthusI'll admit I actually liked this film. It's nothing special, in fact I don't even consider it a good film. but I still like it. It's just a guilty pleasure of mind. Now the sequel, ughh, don't get me started. that one was horrible. While I'll admit I liked the predalien look (though the one from the new game was better since while the predator parts were there, it didn't look too different from the original aliens)there was nothing else going for it.
On another note, for those who are arguing that the predator spawned alien shouldn't have had any predator traits, let me remind you that alien 3 had a dog spawned alien that did have dog traits. and the human spawned ones do have human traits, though mostly skeletal.
-
Though I do admit, the predalien in requiem did have too many predator traits on it. The color didn't need to change, the dreadlocks were completely unnecessary, and the dome head wasn't long enough. As said in my previous comment, the design from the game was better

I watched this with a group of friends, not knowing much about these monster franchises, and still enjoyed the brawls. I was just as astonished that the mother/queen alien was taken out by the woman, but enjoyed seeing her recognized as a fellow hunter by the Predator. I guess a casual viewer can still enjoy this, but the die-hard fan base was let down.
As for QOTD, I feel in infatuation with it long before I was aware of the books. The soundtrack made such an impression on me that I adored the vocalizations DESPITE my dislike for his music from Korn. Stuart Townsend won me over just by his performance. Yes, I has seen "Interview With A Vampire" long before that, but I thought Townsend had WAY more charisma than Cruise. IF one doesn't take the books into account, I think the movie can be held up as a good guilty pleasure from the casual horror/goth/vampire fan. But if one focuses on the differences between the books and the films, I think someone could make a college paper out of it.
As always, great review, ERod. I look forward to seeing more of your work. And I sincerely hope Doug writes a part for you in the 4th year anniversary :D

01.10.2012 - 02:47 | AkaiBad enough Paul Anderson made Resident Evil about a Mary Sue and pissing off gamers everywhere. He had to audacity to again not follow the source material with this crap. Erod, I hope you cover the sequel which is far worse than this.

One of the bigger headscratchers for me was how the Queen didn't notice them. See its been established plenty of times in the series that the Xenomorphs rely on their other senses rather than sight to detect people (the canon is quite sketchy or back and forth on whether or not the creatures are blind (I've always excepted the blind part given that they have no eyes(even in the first the eye sockets are empty) and tend to prefer living in dark moist areas where they wouldn't really need to rely on sight) so the Predators cloaking shouldn't have worked on the Queen and she should have known they were there.
So, why doesn't she attack them or acknowledge them? I can understand that the Queen would be pissed given everything that has happened but the Queen as always been established to be relatively smart, almost to the point of a human, I'm sure she would have made a retreat given that it would have been more beneficial to her in the long run.
She was out numbered and out classed, a full army of Predators in front of her that could take her down at any point...
Ha well I'm probably putting more thought into it than they did. I hated this film, it lied to me. The trailer was more flaunting that epic battle on the pyramid with thousands and thousands of them crawling up to the Predator... Which ended up being a flashback in the movie. Instead we got this pile of trash.
