I saw Saving Face.I do MMA I'm 6 foot tall and 240 pounds. I'm not violent and I'll say I'm a pussy cat, kind of a push over. But as a old fashion gentleman when a lady gets assaulted by a spineless man it boils my blood. I really wanted to get my hands on the coward and shatter both of his hand get in his face and say to him You hurt another lady and I'll cut your hands off.
Sorry when I was young my sister got beaten by her boyfriend and I was too little to do any thing. That's why I get angry when a lady gets hurt by a coward.
(deep breath) Any way thank you as always my lady.
BTW you look really good with you hair down......just saying.

Saving Face looks really interesting to me. I minored in Women and Gender Studies for my undergrad, but we never really talked about women in Pakistan having acid thrown on their faces. We mostly talked about forced removal of the clitoris of young girls in Africa. While that subject is interesting and controversial, after a while, you want to talk about something new that is interesting and controversial. Thank you for letting us know about these, Lindsay!

The animated program usually adds four or five shorts that aren't nominated because the animated ones tend to run shorter. After they show the five nominees, they will usually have sevral that are "Highly Commended" ones.

02.26.2012 - 06:05 | JackabladeHey Obscure Animation,
A friend of mine made one of the "bonus shorts" on the US animated short tour, a film called Nullabor. I'd be interested to know what you thought of it. It's a very distinctly Australian film so I'm curious to hear what a American folks make of it.

Thank you for giving us your honest perspective as a professional filmmaker on Oscar-nominated cinema. It's refreshing to see this other side of you even if it's just for a few minutes. I would hope you somehow do this kind of thing more often in the future.
Seriousness aside, "Most of it was cutting between footage and a (guy) sitting on a chair talking..." I hope the irony of that didn't escape you.... :)

Again, a good capsule. I saw the nominated animated shorts from 2005, the one that stuck with me was called The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello. It was (if I remember correctly) Australian, it was done in a sort of Victorian "steampunk" style with very vivid, silhouette-cutout artwork. It was 45 minutes long and seemed to be a pilot for a larger work (a series or full-length feature) which sadly never materialized. Even more sadly, it didn't win the Oscar.

Only the feature leagth docs. Does anyone know how you might find them on itunes? Either way I'm just thankfull to find so many new options. It's fantastic, so thanks Lindsey!

It's pretty awful how women can be treated in many parts of the world. From forced marriages to female circumcision to just plain feeding everyone else in the family, with what little food there is, before the girls, women can have it rough. I'm surprised that you said that "most of us in the western world didn't even know that that was a thing". Every person I know knows that acid being thrown in girls' faces, girls being burned, or violently beaten in South Asia, The Middle East, and Africa are huge things. Just recently, there was a pretty infamous trial in Canada of an Afghan immigrant who, with his son and his second wife, killed his first wife and 3 of his daughters from the second wife, to cleanse the family honour. No Canadian, who doesn't have his head up his ass, is unaware of the vile treatment of women that goes on in the world. Still, documentaries, like "Saving Face", are good tools towards making the issue of combating female "punishment" a priority for people. The shorts played recently in my city, but I missed them. I'm glad, at least, that you got to see them.

I hadn't seen any of the documentary shorts. The only animated one I saw was the one you said was your favorite. It seems kind of pointless to watch them now as they have already won or lost. It's rare you guys review documentary stuff. The second video said it was going to be like twenty-two minutes long, but it wasn't that at all. It was even shorter than the first one.
My local "arthouse" (really a national chain that occasionally pretends to cater to indie/artsy demographics) had a deal where you could see all of the animated shorts, all of the live-action shorts, PLUS four bonus animated shorts, all on the same bill, for only ten bucks. I am SO glad I went! I really liked La Luna, but I would be very happy if Morris Lessmore took home the statue. Of the live-action shorts, I think I liked Tuba Atlantic the most.
