I totally can never tell the difference between N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys. They sound exactly the same. "I want it that way?" I thought that was N'Sync. I will probably think that again in a week.
  • BIRA
It was so obvious that it was BSB the firts, it could not be different, their songs were not that bad. For the other it was all shit.

Ah, Canadian boy bands. After watching this video I looked some of them up, and I've been listening to The Moffatts all afternoon. Surprisingly, some of their songs still hold up, but mostly it's pure, delightful nostalgia.
  • Chicken Parma
It was Simon FULLER who created the Spice Girls and 5ive, not Simon Cowell.

    Never heard of #8.

A bit too many "Lou Pearlman is a douche" bits for my liking.

I called #1 before the video started.

It wasn't "Lou Pearlman is a douche". It was "Lou Perlman is a creepy pervert pedophile."
  • Kirsten425  - Oh God, boy bands

I was in elementary school during a good part of the 90's and for us little girls, it was either BSB or N'Sync, with 98 degrees being the safe-ish category if you didn't want to be a part of the rivalry or if you wanted to say that they were your second favorite boy band. I myself loved BSB the most and I even went to one of their concerts during the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school because I had this group of friends who absolutely loved them. I still listen to their music mainly for nostalgia sake, but boy bands now are just not something I am in to.

oh gooooood. oh god, Mmmbop just put me into nostalgia overload. i feel like crying. i remember that, but more importantly i remember that TIME. i remember everything....
remember wrestling? remember extreme sports like skate boarding or ROLLERBLADING? and it was COOL? my brother and i would swing on the swings with our roller blades that weighed a jillion pounds and pretend we were tony hawk. wow....wow....
i'm gonna forward mmbop to all my friends....
you know how everything is about the 80's right now? well our generation is growing up, and soon there will be movies about the 90's made with all the affection they deserve.... wow.

Ahhh yes, the 90s. I remember them well. The black-and-white printout of Leonardo DiCaprio I got from some website and put in my pencil box at school and some other girl stole (still miffed about that XD ) … listening to Mmmbop on my mom's Walkman/radio in the car … Beanie Babies … GigaPets … Good times, good times.

Also, that's adorable, you and your brother pretending to be Tony Hawk on the swings ^_^

When you said "playing instruments is actually a dis-qualifier" I was like, NOOO she's not going to say Hanson! But then you did. I loves.

Holy crap I used to listen to 5ive "when the lights go out" as a kid.....yeah i didnt know back then they were taking about sex, I just thought they were talking about bowling with no lights to provide a challenge..........im just gonna go back and do my drum covers now.....-_-

wow, really? i've never met a Kevin fan girl before. i liked Nick [kinda think that's why i like blondes to this day actually] had a friend who liked A.J., another who liked Brian, and even met someone who liked Howie, never one for Kevin. i always wished there were more solo's for him, i liked his voice. Brian was the best singer imo, favourite BSB song is That's What She Said. I Need you Tonight [Nick's solo] puts me to sleep so fast, i don't remember if i've ever finished that one lol.

anyway, HA! BSB #1! in your're face NSynch fangirls! [shouldn't of watched this at my boyfriends house, when BSB was announced number one i had a minor freakout... guess my fandom will never go away...] never liked Justin, so I couldn't get into the band... that and the spelling. happy Hanson made the list though. lol, LFO still love your hit, so randomly hillarious.
  • MollyWobbles6093
I was always an N*SYNC loyalist as a kid, though I did like a BSB song or two. I had my favorite BSB (Brian - my sister's favorites were Nick and Howie), but I bought all the N*SYNC CDs and my sister bought all the BSB CDs (or, rather, our parents bought them for us, since we were both quite young when the boy band reared its ugly head). I do realize now that, talent-wise, BSB was the better band, I think my Mom just sort of decided for my sister and I which kid got which band's CDs so that she didn't have to buy two copies of the same ones.

Also, I am just now learning from Wikipedia that Brian and Kevin are cousins o.O

Oh, and you'd better believe that my sister and I were both screaming maniacs for Hanson. I still have their debut CD, their Christmas CD, and their...third CD, I think, whatever Three Car Garage was.

HA! I was a Kevin fangirl too, although that was mostly my child!hipster attempt to favor the one nobody else liked.

Ah, Backstreet Boys. Man, that was my childhood. Even my mom ended up liking them. Probably still does.

The only 90s boybands I remember are The Jackson 5, Beach Boys, Menudo & NKotB, unless South Korean ones count. Okey, yes, I actually thought Beach Boys & Jackson 5 were "current" back in those days. I was too young to grasp the concept of rereleasing old music onto new media & yes, I thought there were two Micheal Jacksons. I was 7.....

Okey, the first boy band Lindsay's making fun of....Has anyone here seen "the Key of Awesome" parody of it?

"Well a shooby doo whop & Scooby snacks." ::spits coffee all over keyboard:: Lol!

So we've got this list of boybands:
    *1Tym.
    *Boys2Men.
    *3Deep,
    *All4One.
    *5ive.
    *6kies.
    *Se7en.

Heheh, my favorite boyband was Highfive of Teenagers. You've got the hyper draft dodger who has a lisp, the shy guy who's voice you can barely hear who looks like a kabuki actress, the adorable G-rated manchild who cries a lot, the other G-rated guy who looks like a chick, & the other pretty guy with absolutely no personality whatsoever. & their music was as kid-friendly as Will Smith's early hip-hop.

H&tB was a boyband? An Adult Alternative boyband? Well I listened to them & Blues Traveler a lot as a kid.
  • NikLotus
    avatar
I totally forgot all about All4One until I read this comment.... lol
  • Linda  - About Menudo. Kinda.
You are right about your perception of Menudo as a 90's boy band. The radio stations used to replay their songs a lot. But Menudo was more a 80's thing ... because in the 90's there was a boy band which evolved into a duo: Salserín with Los Hermanos Primera, Servando y Florentino.
You can recognize them by their hit "Fan enamorada" or "De Sol a Sol". They had the coreography, the talent, the looks, the charisma; you know, the boy band pack.
Oh My God. They flooded the radios. All my friends talked about them. I think they even made a movie. I hated them. There was no escape. They were everywhere.
Nowadays, they keep singing, but they are innofensive.
    Sorry for the rant.

The late 80s & early 90s are an indistinguishable blur. Anyone else feel that the 80s didn't really die until 1995? Meanwhile 1983 might as well have been the 70s.
  • Linda
I don't know why, but all the links I put in here seem to be broken. Just search "de sol a sol salserin en concierto" on Youtube.

LikaLaruku, you are right. The thing is, I didn't grew up with Menudo (I'm 25). The radios played their music, yes, but it was like "remember?" and I was like "remember what?". I think they fade away in 92? And nobody seems to remember Salserín. They were at their peek from 93 to 98 and beyond. It's like I was the only one who experienced that madness.

    Really? Nobody?

Well then, I'll put my spanish copy of BoyzIIMen and that lonely spanish version of "This I promise You" from N*Sync. Who am I kidding, I hated N*Sync too.
  • Firestorm
I remember one boy band called A1. Yes, I am not making that up. Too bad there wasn't a band called Heinz57 to have a rivalry with.
  • K-Chan4U
Damn i missed the vote but yeah My list would have been N'sync, and BSB, I had all their albums would have still had them if I hadn't lost them a while ago. Plastered their faces all over my walls and even had crushes on one from each. Nick Carter and Lance Bass, the latter broke my heart when he came out of the closet! Broke it I tell you BROKE IT!!!

*ahem* But if you want to fight about the new Boy bands I like One Direction. They're cute their songs are catchy and damn the single they have out in the states makes me wanna dance! I haven't even heard of the other so where are they hm?

Boy bands are still huge, just not in America. South Korea has loads, according to Wikipedia there's 64 active boy bands in South Korea alone. Nearly all music over there are from groups.
  • 12sided
    avatar
Yes! There's even a group with 13 members O_o I have some friends who are really into the SK music scene and I just can't keep up with the number of new bands, old bands dispersing and regrouping.
But at least there's a large amount of very entertaining music videos
  • Javo
I started singing along with the n'sync song. FUCK I hate the 90's now why do i know that song why is it i still remember that song no matter how much i hated it.

I was a 3T fan. Mostly, because Michael Jackson and Tito Jackson helped them a lot in terms of development.
  • NumberJenn
when I was 5-7 at the height of boyband-dom, but i wasn't on the side of any of them. I was wayyy into spice girls >.
  • Moon Spirit

This was a surprise. I thought for sure N*Sync would have clenched the #1 spot, but only based on the success of Justin Timberlake. But once again, Backstreet Boys still has claimed the #1 spot over their bitter rival.

And as for half of these boy bands, I never heard of at all. 5ive? 2gether? NKOTB? Then again, I was only in elementary school and all I heard was Scatman Jones and Macarena.
  • mr_rubino
    avatar
Well NKOTB was from a good 5 years beforehand. If you had an older sister during those boybanding years, she probably talked about them and you were all like "Pfft, whatever you old crone with your old crone boybands."
  • quillgirl
Oh, my mom would be so pleased with the #1!
  • Mr.Anderssson

Thanks for reminding me what it was like when boy bands are popular, now I know what to expect with this second wave of boy bands. And I'm going to loathe every minute of it.

Question: Does Justin Beiber count as a boy band? Technically one person doesn't count as a band, but he still seems to fit all the tropes anyways, and is equally as hateable.
  • Firestorm
Not only does Justin Bieber not count as a boy band, Justin doesn't count as a boy, either. I suspect that Bieber is secretly the missing triplet of Tegan and Sara.

  • Khazoth
I am a guy.. But god I must admit I liked a few songs from the backstreet boys.
  • dennett316
    avatar
Me too...and an N*Synch one. And several Take That songs. And "Keep on Movin'" by 5ive.

Take That really deserve to be higher on the list, they did some really good stuff...and still do. Their latest stuff after their comeback (Shine, Patience, Rule the World) are really great pop songs.

I thought the likes of Boyzone and Westlife might have made the list, but I must have over-estimated their popularity as it seems that Americans haven't heard of them.
  • Lim  - All the bees and birds are flyin'
My sister was obsessed with 5ive. I asked her if there were any songs they did that DIDN'T have counting (this was on the first album) and she couldn't answer.

Constant exposure, through her, led to me liking some of their songs. Since they were Brittish, at least I didn't have to listen to them on the radio as well.
  • WiiStation360
    avatar
I hate boybands, and I hate it even more that they're making a comeback. Everyone, even the fans know that it's not about the music, it's about their looks. Come on, can't women just look up guys on the internet like guys do for girls? At least back then we didn't have internet so it's excusable.
  • theyandere
    avatar
I think the "women" who would like these boy bands are very young and would feel creepy looking up random dudes like that. Plus girls like some form of personality along with good looks.
  • RianLe
I first heard of Take That when they did the end theme for Stardust. They also did one for X-Men First Class, "Love Love", which is currently my most played track on iTunes.

I had NO IDEA they began as a 90's Boy Band.
  • Dancingstagequeen
    avatar
    >"I had NO IDEA they began as a 90's Boy Band."

Which is why it is so strange that like Mum's and Granny's love 'Take That' now when only their kids were the right age to like them back in the 90s.
  • ladydiskette
    avatar
I never was into the Backstreet Boys as much as the other girls were in my school, my alternative to them was 98 Degrees because I always thought they're more "Hotter, brooding, and mature" than the other boy bands. Unnnf, Nick Lachey was my favorite ever since I saw his buff naked chest in that wedding music video. God I loved that wedding music video, it was sexy but so funny at the end I burst out laughing.

Of course when I got older and started listening to alternative rock I realized they were no different than Backstreet, N'sync, or any other boy band at that time.

    lol.

*listening to Backstreet Boys and loving it* ^^ I still love the Backstreet Boys and I love the fact that they're still going regardless of not having Kevin or even having as much coverage as they used to. They're still damn good musicians and I will always adore them.
  • littlelili
I would highly recommend seeing them when they tour again with New Kids on the Block. Like I went to the show in DC with some of my older friends... and my dad and we had so much fun! And I wasn't even a BSB loyalist back then.
