OK I had to stop the review when I heard the line "its not fornication if we were married in a previous life!" I lol'd so much I had to stop watching. Nella's nun bit is hilarious too.

Can't wait to finish watching this as this is pretty hilarious, and this is coming from a born & raised Catholic!

    Hahaha! Brilliant.
    Also I didn't know Nella's full name before. It's very pretty. :)
Also (x2) does it count as a sex life if it's with a fictional character, you two? :P
  • Midnightcross
Wow Nella is awesome in this ep XD, the nun thing was hilarious, I too loved the part where you said avatar
"It's not fornication if we were married in a previous life."

    Keep up the awesome reviews!

    Catholic guilt?

So that was what my grandma was using whenever she wanted me to do something, lol.
  • tetekanui
"So Nella...how's your sex life, that I know you have?"

Nella and Lindsay are so cute together and seem like genuinely close friends and I love it. The review was spot-on. I don't remember these movies very well, and you have beautifully outlined why that is! :)

That really needed to be said with a Tommy Wiseau accent.

    I was thinking exactly that.

"Anyway, Nella, how's your sex life?"

    "It's private."

I always liked both sister act movies. I can actually say I had both cd's at one time. At the time I thought they were great, but I can see how badly the second one stacks up now.

how much entertainment does this franchise offer?
    nun!

Nella's accent when she first appears as a Nun.... I think I'm in love.

Great review, I know I saw the movies but barely remember either one.. which probably says something about them.

at 3:41 - "or all those times I watched your dog when you ran off to stalk Todd in your futile attempts at fornication." yeah, Nella was pretty much the best part of this review! She was perfect!

Um, those habits are still being worn, in public too.
  • kurokotetsu

They are. A second (or third) uncle is a Cistercian monk and wears the typical black an white habit. Still, I would compain that the habits are wrong, as niether the carmelites nor the poor clares (the female branch of the fransiscans, they are not called the same) wear those colours.

I love that I learn something new with each Nchick video. Didn't know that Sisters and Nuns were separate things. Thanks Nella!

All in all I remember seeing 2. It was...watchable I guess. I was at the age were I was easily impressed with re-imagined classical music so I was fond of the ending even though it sucked. Thanks for reviewing.

Nella is always awesome, so is Lindsay. They crack me up all the time!
I remember enjoying these movies because it made christian religion look a lot smoother than it really is,without disrespecting it. I can't help myself but think that due to the time these movies got made, Vanilla Ice would have been a better choice for the rapping bits, even if he's not very good he's still a diamond compared to these clowns. Good work from you girls as usual, I appreciate that chemistry you have.

1:30 in. The audio suddenly gets really quiet, and then there's a punchline. I feel like there was supposed to be a joke there. If there was, it was inaudible.
  • 9ansean
I though it was a mistake at first, but after playing it back I now think the quiet part was really from the clip shown. The joke was about Whoopi moving away from the mic mid-song, which is why the punchline was about her character not being cut out for a music career.
  • JunkWatcher
Actually, Whoopi isn't moving away from the mic at all. She's holding it in her hand.
I even checked the actual movie, there's no weird change in audio, Whoopi doesn't move (except for dancing in place). It's just the backing vocalists who don't have a singing part at that point and take that time to put away their mic standards.

So something must have gone wrong with editing there. Maybe NChick couldn't remember the character's name and planned to record it again after she looked it up, but forgot to put it in, since her voice cuts off right at the moment she's supposed to say the name.
Anyway, I think the punchline is actually that her name (Deloris Van Cartier) isn't really fit as a stage name.

Whoa! Lindsay is wearing the same outfit from a previous video! It's not possible!

Anyway, I haven't seen any of these, but I always thought that the "I have big dreams and I'm talented but my parents/guardians won't let me pursue my dreams because they're uptight deadbeats" was something High School Musical and Billy Elliot made into a rage. I stand corrected.

Thanks for sharing the Catholic knowledge, Nella. Being a dumb Jew, I don't know any of that stuff. But I AM getting over the way I looked at nuns after seeing The Magdalene Sisters.

Nella you should make a spin off series, I love you!
  • musiclover9293
I will admit it. I do like both of these movies. They were a big part of my childhood. You make some good points about how the second movie wasn't original, but at the end of the day they are harmless feel good movies.

It's interesting how these movies have aged. They are entertaining when you are young and don't know any better. As mediocre family entertainment, it works.

High five, Nella! Just for having the same German Catholic upbringing as me.

    German food IS delicious.

Actually there is an older non-musical version of this story with monks.

It's "Brother Orchid" and stars Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart.

Robinson plays a mob boss on the run from his old gang,(now lead by Bogart) who hides in a monastery. Only find out that he actually likes being a monk more than a gangster.
  • egonics
Good stuff as always Team Nostalgia Chick. I can't help but wonder if the impetus for this series was the success of the show "Nunsense", which was at the height of its Off-Broadway run and had just been picked up by the London stage when the first script for Sister Act was penned with Bette Midler in mind (1987). But while that was a quirky comedy that stretched the satirical potential of nuns in goofy yet safe ways, Sister Act is, like you say, "fun" rather than "funny". A much more biting satire can be found in 1977's "Nasty Habits", an almost forgotten film which is basically the Watergate scandal taking place in the context of an urban Philadelphia content. Glenda Jackson plays a much more, um, "attractive" version of Tricky Dick :)
  • Athelyna
There are plenty of religious orders that still wear habits, like these guys http:// www.carmelitemonks.org/ habit.html The Catholic center at my university was run by Dominicans priests and brothers, who always wore full habits.
I would point out they can't be Carmelites in the 1st movie because Carmelite habits are brown. The habits they wear are the habits of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, an order which did stop wearing the habit.

I love you Nella! I signed up just so I could tell you. Lindsay is pretty cool too.

I loved the Sister Act movies when I first watched them. Sister Act 2 seems a little lacking in quality compared to the first film but the songs were great.

I've actually been hearing a lot of positive comments about the musical. Who knows? It could be good.

"Our lady of perpetual guilt" got the biggest laugh from me in this vid.
  • TheRottenLeprechaun
I strangely like this movie, even the sequel a little bit. I didn't really know why until this review; "These are the kind of nuns we want to exist."
Or maybe it's because I am incapable of disliking anything with Maggie Smith in it.
  • HedonisteEgoiste

Ah, the rapping. Yeah saw this the other day an experienced major second-hand embarrassment. Lauryn Hill was pretty decent (singing wise) and other than the monks, was the only thing I enjoyed about the second one.

First one is always enjoyable though.

Oh, Nella. You are a special kind of wonderful :)
  • Amay13
we watched this in my English class during our comic unit. It was fun....

Despite being a Catholic, I wasn't aware of those differences between religious orders for women. Thanks for enlightening me.

I do prefer the first of Sister Act to the second.
