I don't think I really like hearing Lindsay review Disney productions (not just Disney sequels, but all Disney), because she really just doesn't seem like she's that into it either way.
Which isn't to say I have a problem hearing from a reviewing who doesn't like Disney, just that her critiques are a little lackluster. It's getting kind of monotonous to listen to. It'd be a lot more interesting to hear from someone who's otherwise passionate about Disney films (or animation) reviewing some of the ones they don't like than listening to someone who doesn't seem all that into many of them to begin with.
I don't know. Maybe that's just me.
Also, for a direct-to-video film, I don't know how you couldn't like Lion King II. I think it's literally as good as it could have been for having been produced by DisneyToon Studios.

02.08.2012 - 10:55 | moriuslol, I actually feel the other way around, I feel she's waaaay too much into Disney films... And considering how often she likes rubbing into our faces her "film education", it's kind of ironic.
I remember the time she mentioned that watching the Beauty and the Beast Christmas movie made her not able to watch "Beauty and the Beast" for a whole year.
I was like "seriously? How often did you watch it?!?!" I don't watch my favourite movies more than once a year. In fact, I haven't seen my favourite movie in more than two years because I don't wanna ruin the amazing feeling I got when I first watched it.
Plus, her overuse of the word "trope" drives me nuts. But what can I say? It's better than that McGuffin guy who didn't know what a McGuffin was.
-
02.08.2012 - 11:28 | Tameel1Is watching a favorite movie more than one a year really that weird? Hell, I've watched some of my favorite films multiple times in a single week. That's how much I love them!
But then....I also don't agree that Nostalgia Chick is somehow rubbing her film education in peoples' faces, or that she should (for some reason) not like Disney movies just because she was a film student.
And since when is being educated in film equivalent to "rubbing our faces in it" anyway? Do you say doctors are rubbing their medical training in peoples' faces every time they perform an operation?? Or lawyers are rubbing their law school education in people's faces every time they show up in court?? What makes Lindsay, a FILM critic who has studied FILM, so different? There's nothing wrong with showing off your education when it comes to matters that interest you.

02.08.2012 - 11:39 | moriusRemember when she said that George Lucas's definition of a MacGuffin was more correct than that of Hitchcock's because he has the same diploma as her?

@Kumi- I don't think there should be a rule that you have to feel passionately one way or the other about something to review it, particularly something that has such a wide quality range within it like Disney. The Nostalgia Chick's style has always been very objective. Doug, on the other hand, always reviews very passionately as we saw during Disneycember. I don't think one way of doing things is better than the other and really loved watching both of them review Disney. But I guess if you prefer one way over the other than you have a choice, which is the great thing about this site.
Though your last statement doesn't really match with the rest of what you say as Lindsey makes it clear in this commentary that the reason she disliked Lion King 2 is that it held up so poorly compared with the original, which she clearly likes very much.

02.08.2012 - 11:16 | VoiceEnough with the references to that worthless, facile, pigshit ignorant rape- and pedophile-apologist website TVtropes already.
Great videos, though. ;)

I'm glad I'm not the only one tired of the TVtropes references (it's like they just discovered its existence or something)

The fact that you call it a pedophile apologist website really makes me think you have a valid opinion of it. That characterization does not come from having actually participated there, at all. It's merely a meme created by certain website that got itself shutdown for being so dadblasted negative.
I dare you to go to that place now and find the shit you're talking about. It's not there.
Oh,and if you weren't such fan of the site, you wouldn't notice any references. I sure didn't notice any in either of these two videos.
So keep your obsession with a website you personally think is pro-rape and pedophilia to yourself.

It's less a "public website" than a room full of people who think every word they say is clever enough to be etched into the akashics. (Isn't that what Troper Tales is for? Screw forums; forums eventually bury or delete my carefully-crafted anecdotes.)
TV Tropes has its issues to be sure. "Clever" appears to be the operative word over "informative" across the website. Most of the time, it seemed noone there cared whether they were the only one who got the joke.
When I left, Fetish Fuel was on the chopping block, and I was exposed to plenty of things Tropers "enjoy" that I had so far been able to avoid. (They seem to have gotten the last vestiges of that out since I last looked at least. I wasn't aware "being Jewish IRL is hawt" was a trope.)
I'm still surprised the Glee article ducked ED's wrath. To me, that was a nice representation of all the worst of TV Tropes. Now that it's not quite as horrendous (I guess. I stopped reading on page 950.), I guess that just leaves the pages where people outright make up movies/TV shows/whatnot on the spot and talk about how awesome they are. (Again, what's the purpose?)

Yeah, seriously. I frequent friggin' Pharyngula, and it doesn't get much more feminist and anti-rape culture than them. I haven't seen any reports of rape apology and pedophilia regarding TVTropes anywhere.
EDIT: Google search reveals Something Awful as the source of the pedophilia and rape apology allegedly plaguing the site. Reading the topic, I can tell they're quote mining and taking the obvious ones way out of proportion.
You see, the thing is, IT'S A PUBLIC WEBSITE. You're going to get assholes. They're here, they're on SA, they're on TVTropes, they're everywhere. I'm not gonna say get used to it, because we should work to drive them off, but nonetheless, saying that the site itself is filled with that kind of person is just wrong.

02.08.2012 - 11:57 | purinI think TLK 2 has so many fans because of its potential. It's ALMOST pretty good. I WANT to like it. I do. I want to see how that kingdom is supposed to run, how exactly that monarchy works (though, I guess the original stretched its metaphor as far as it could, and even then it has problems), and I want to see the world expanded, and other lions/kingdoms. I totally dig the outlanders' designs.
Too bad the movie was eeehhh. Not only was it so half baked, but it cut out the scenes that would have at least made the most of its half baked plot!
I have a friend who's moving in with a questionable boyfriend because she swears she's the only one who can help him and she can't just "give up on him." BATB sequels make me rage all the more because of it.
I was considering watching ALL the sequels one by one, but, listening to all this, I think my brain wouldn't survive. My alternate plan is to buy up a whole handful of knockoff movies (those cheap DTV movies that try as hard as possible to resemble, at least on the cover, popular animated movies) and have a movie night. It's probably worse.

I've been to The Lion King fan archive many many times, and while a few people love TLK2 a lot... most them, (us?), really don't. There are too many questions it opens and doesn't answer. Characters from the original got annoying little rewrites in their characters. And I learned as long as you're good you aren't ugly looking at the end of the movie. (Really, look at the outland lions again at the very end of the movie.)
Though I might have liked it a tinge better if they kept the suicide in at the end.

I was REALLY hoping for a new Nostalgia Chick review today so I was kind of disappointed when I saw this. But then I watched it and cheered up because this was a totally awesome commentary. :) I loved that Todd was there too, and I thought it was great that you guys actually talked about why you picked each one, because a lot of commentaries on this site seem to get diverted into talking about unrelated things.
But seriously, I hope we still get a new Nostalgia Chick this week! I'm having withdrawals. :O

Nice commentary, very detailed and you state your reasons. When it coems to the Genie, yeah I can see why you dislike him and while he didn't bother me. The funny thing is that his best joke is not a reference, "Do not atempt to move or we'll be shooting ourselves" (at least I havn't heard the line anywhere else) I love that line.

02.08.2012 - 15:40 | Vismutti
Oh my god, I'd SO watch the Hades and Persephone movie. That'd be awesome. The only problem with Hades in Hercules was that they forced him into a bad guy just because. And I've always liked the Persephone myth, although in most versions it seems to leave out the whole thing about what the poor girl herself thought about the situation... I always liked to think that she actually did want to become Hades' wife but she also wanted to see her mother again. Probably because I like a happy ending and I like Hades as less of a bad guy.
Also, I agree about Iago. The reason why I like The Return of Jafar is because of Iago. I never liked Aladdin in the first place, not even in the first movie and I only barely liked Jasmine. The Genie... I guess he was okay or something I don't know. I think I probably liked him as a child although I can't really remember. I didn't understand half of the things he said. But Iago, I liked him, he's a fun bastard.
And for that matter, I still say The Lion King 2 was really one of the less awful Disney sequels. Okay, most of it was crap, but I honestly like the scene where Nuka dies, not because he was annoying, which he admittedly was, but because... I really felt bad for him despite myself, because he really just wanted his mother's attention which he obviously hadn't gotten in a long while. And it gives Zira a sense of humanity when she realizes too late that she did in fact care for her son. It's just... not something I've seen a lot in Disney movies.

I really enjoyed these commentaries and the original videos too! Honestly, I think if anyone is going to sit there and pick apart whether they think Lindsay is worthy enough of reviewing any Disney film then they have way too much time on their hands. Seriously, do you have nothing better to do than say, "Well Lindsay doesn't like Disney enough (or likes them too much) to review their work so she should stop" or even, of all things, calling her pretentious for being a film student graduate because...why exactly? Oh, she mentions it a few times so that means she's rubbing it in our faces. HUH?! Maybe she does that for her Nostalgia Chick character but from commentaries or other things where she's not "in character" it doesn't seem that way to me. At the risk of sounding bitchy, get a life! If you don't like the way she reviews Disney flicks then either don't watch the videos, review them yourself or quit whining!
On the subject of how often someone watches their favorite movies, who cares? So what if you watch your favorite movie once an hour, once a day, once a week, once a month or once a year? Doesn't mean you're better than anyone else for doing so. I remember as a child watching my favorite Disney movies ten times or more in a day. Doesn't mean I'm better than someone that watches it once a year, I just enjoyed it that much.
Don't we all have more important things to do that sitting in front of our computers insulting each other and our favorite TGWTG contributors? What happened to leaving comments saying "good job on the video" or giving HELPFUL critiques? When did it become, "Well so and so isn't fit to review 'X' because of 'Y'"?
-
In the realm of HELPFUL CRITQUES, I'd just like to say this to Lindsey with regard to the line about never making a mistake (and yes I know it was probably a joke). I do think in all fairness that she is WAY passed due following Doug and Lewis's fine example and pointing out a video of Nostalgia Chick F*ck Ups.
Now I am not about to get all McKnitpick here and provide a list of factual errors, but I could. In fact, I recomend getting Dr. C. Tease to build some kinds of trap for old Duchy when he eventually shows up for the occassion. The thing is I can handle minor factual errors when there just mentioned on the side, but when ever anyone makes an argument based on something I know isn't accurate I die a little inside! It just shows they really didn't do there homework! Just think of it as clearing out some cobweebs, O.K.

Bambi 2 is an abomination: it took all of the majestic beauty of the original movie and expounded on everything to the point that nothing made any sense. We didn't NEED to see the relationship between Bambi and his dad because by the end of the original you knew EXACTLY the kind of relationship they had. We didn't NEED to see Ronno as a little asshole bitch kid because his only purpose was to be a natural threat to the relationship between Bambi and Faline. And it worked - BUT Disney execs said "Fuck the fans" and went the George Lucas route of trying to explain everything. But the problem is that it simply isn't necessary, or even CONTINUOUS with the timeline of Bambi. The original took place all over the course of one year and the last time we see Bambi as a little fawn is in the middle of winter (was going to say "DEAD of winter" but it's too soon). The first time Bambi sees everyone all grown up is the beginning of Spring, and that's where the rest of the movie takes place. In Bambi 2, however, they're all still little kids at the beginning of Spring AND Bambi sees Thumper, Flower, and Faline during this time. The people behind Bambi 2 simply didn't respect the majesty and near-perfection of the original and it had no business being made.

actually the only cub who directly says that scar was not his father was kovu. the other two never make mention of who theor father may or may not be. and technically speaking, it is highly likely that nala was fatherd by mufasa. thats just how it works in a pride of lions. but of course disney is going to ignore that bit of info.

An interesting and fair commentary for some interesting and fair videos. I am grateful that I never saw Hunchback II, as it looks like an awful sequel to my favourite Disney movie. I actually did enjoy Lion King II more than the original, since it retconned the whole xenophobic moral thing, but I don't particularly like either film.
I have to disagree with you about the lowest form of humour though; the lowest form of humour, in my opinion, will always be humour at other people's expense.
-
02.09.2012 - 01:33 | YouAskedForItI think reference jokes are slammed for similar reasons as when people place 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or #nd comments on w/ever. The skill is rather derivative of the function.

I personally think the same about reference jokes I do about fart humor or cursing.
It needs to have a point. And if it does, it's fine, and even great. But it's so easy to confuse just having them as humor, they are very often used badly.
But I do like references that are hidden somewhere on the background, or not instantly noticeable, or the point. Then it's kinda like a treasure-hunt, or some nice bonus you feel special picking up.
-
I just want to let everybody know, because apparently nobody else knows this, that Bambi was a BOOK before it was a movie. I remember reading it at some point as a kid. And Bambi 2, from what I hear (I haven't actually seen it tbh), just puts in all the stuff it skipped in the book.
"Bambi 2 is an abomination: it took all of the majestic beauty of the original movie and expounded on everything to the point that nothing made any sense. We didn't NEED to see the relationship between Bambi and his dad because by the end of the original you knew EXACTLY the kind of relationship they had."
Maybe we didn't but a lot of the book is actually about just that.
"We didn't NEED to see Ronno as a little asshole bitch kid because his only purpose was to be a natural threat to the relationship between Bambi and Faline. And it worked - BUT Disney execs said "Fuck the fans" and went the George Lucas route of trying to explain everything."
You might be right. But it sounds like possibly Ronno got extended to show some of another book-character's storyline -- Faline's brother Gobo, who is kind of a little bitch. Meets a very sad send, but if he's also Ronno, then that part can't have happened in the movie.
