4:41 Great Black Cauldron clip! Holy shit, holy shit indeed! I saw it once when I Was small, then got it on vhs on its rerelease in I think 1998....and I was like "WHOA!" when the cauldron started ...spewing blood at the end!

7:13 "Getting crushed"... yeah I winced at the crunch too. I was like "yeah its a bug character...but jesus!"

9:57 Disney is notorious for dropping villians off a cliff...or waterfall, so as to be kinda ambigious as to how they go without showing hte inevitable splat.

11:52 and number one...THE DIP! That very idea scared the pants off me as a little kid. It was gory! and horrible! That toon shoe just disintegrates right in front of you! So I was genuinely worried for the toon characters by the end fight.

Judge Doom getting blasted wtih Dip and melting ala the Wicked Witch of the West scared me a heck of a lot as a young un. Him getting flattened by a steamroller and then puffing back up in the scariest way possible, revealing himself as a toon gave me nightmares!

Great list, Lindsay. Get Nella her food, she deserves it.

    what about clayton getting hanged?
i rewatched tarzan and i was like "OH MY GOD, Disney are fucking satises."
  • S636
    avatar
also how does she put little mermaid into the list despite the fact that she fucking hates that movie. personally its okay.
  • S636
    avatar
i winced as well and also i kinda liked ray but hes another "lousiana redneck"
  • Voodoo Master X

I totally agree with the #1 choice. I saw it when I was little and that seriously freaked me out, although the thing that freaked me out the most was when you found out Judge Doom was a toon and when confessing to killing Eddie's brother he says it in that increasingly high pitched voice. Still creeps me out to this day, BRRR! *shudder*

Agreed!! That cartoon shoe death scene always horrified/made me sad.

Best Nostalgia Chick vid in a long time. Nice one.

...although quit bagging on Dune, tis not cool anymore.

    10. I didn’t know that a hunter shot Bambi’s mother until I got a little older after first seeing it when I was in pre-school.

    9. I was also pretty shocked by this death when this film came out.

    8. That was quick. Also, I haven’t watched Oliver & Company in over a decade.

    7. I still feel that the more symbolic of this death is the one from Hunchback.

    6. Creepy explosion related deaths in Disney animation (except for Mulan, because it didn‘t really had an impact).

    5. Poor little lightning bug.

    4. I still find Ursula’s death a really powerful moment in that movie, and I give credit to both the animation and sound.

    3. Lion King and Tarzan really know how to up the dime with eating related deaths, or and deaths in general.

    2. I think falling related deaths occur in many of these movies, because you’re unable to see the body hit the ground, because either it’s way down below or they immediately cut to the character(s) watching them fall.

    1. I actually agree with your choice in The Dip from Roger Rabbit. I grew up with this film since I was 5, the toon shoe death also creeped me out, but I still watch the movie all the way through. Also, this film still holds up for me today.

    10. As a hunter myself the only thing I got from that now is that who ever the hunter was that shot Bambi's mom was a terrible hunter! You never shoot a mother animal!

    9. I wasn't shocked until they actually showed the shadow outline on the guy's legs dangling like that! The only thing they could've done to make that more disturbing was if he had a death twitch/rattle!

    8. Me either. I keep getting my memories of it and All Dogs Go To Heaven mixed together!

    7. Hunchback should've been it's own death all together. Old dude fell, was crushed by a stone statue, and if that didn't do him in he was burned alive. But, still in that very Christian world it was set it he was definnetly going to Hell at least the 7-8th circle!
Can you tell me what was that last scene from with the dude being tore into Hell?

    6. Yeah that villain death had no impact!

    5. Never saw that movie! Yet!

    4. Me too! She sould've went on to show the bits of Ursula falling and floating down! If she thought the whole the 2 eels being electro-exsploded was harsh!

    3. Yeap! I was actually freaked out as a kid at the idea of Scar's death! Tarzan I was a bit older when watching it and the hanging stuck more with me than the being eaten stuff!

    2. Yeap, also it's easier to say it's not th lead's fault as either the villain slips or trips! And it can also be used to show the hero being exstra heroic by trying to save the villains before the fall!

    1. I remember having my mother cover my eyes at the Shoe dipping scene because it'd made me cry. I'm shocked she didn't go on to mention that because the shoe was red and when Doom turned around his glove was covered in runny red paint that looked a hell of a lot like BLOOD!

i didnt know either that a hunter shot bambis mom ethier, also 3 people get shot in pochantas and only 1 dies 2 or injured(john and the indian are injured pochantases fiacne gets killed) and The Dip scene from Roger Rabbit is creepy and fucking cruel. not only do most villans/characters just fall they also do the whelm scream (look it up).
  • ThatLong-HairedCreepyGuy

Roger Rabbit scared the s*** out of me for years. I remember seeing it for the first time as a kid and wondering how in the hell could anyone place this as a KID'S MOVIE?!

(I am aware it wasn't 'exactly' a kid's movie at the time, but there were still a ton of kids going to see this film and renting it on home video.)
  • CartoonFireworks
    avatar
Yeah. I'm actually surprised a lot of people saw that movie at a young age. I mean, it doesn't even TRY to be a kids' movie. It's a film noir that, while cartoony, makes tons of sexual references that go beyond innuendo.

I mean, really, during the pattycake scene, my only thought was "Holy shit, people show their kids this movie?"

All in all it's still awesome, though. And one of my favorite movies of all time.

Oh, and back to the point of this list: YAY! DR. FACILIER! I love this villain. And Princess and the Frog, I love that movie and I love its villain gettin' dragged into hell. Plus it's one of my favorite Disney movies of all time, about a zillion times better than Tangled in my opinion. Don't get why people are so negative about it...
  • fanime1  - You like Princess and the Frog too?
    avatar
    I agree! :)
  • Semudara

It's the nostalgia goggles. They cannot comprehend that The Princess and the Frog is every bit as good as the older Disney films.

From what I here you should read the 2 books of the movie they are like 5Xs worse!

Unless you count that deleted version of Zira's death from Lion King II, Gurgi is the only Disney character to die by suicide.

He does come back, but still.
  • J.A.L
    avatar
Tsk Tsk, if they die for their friends it's called "self-sacrifice", its honorable and kids don't get confused with religion-related issues;)
  • Vismutti
    avatar
That reminds me of Nuka's death in the same movie... that one was by crushing too. I don't know why but that death just made me bawl like a child even though I was pretty old when I saw it. Seriously, it was worse for me than Mufasa's. I guess it's because it's just heart-breaking how he only gets his mother's attention at the moment of his death. I don't even care about how selfish and bad he was, it was still so, so sad. (And the deleted version killed me.)
  • LeGrotesque
    avatar
Nuka was played by Andy Dick. Of course you'd be sad when Andy Dick dies.

Joking aside, I agree with you completely.
  • LeGrotesque
    avatar
I've never heard of the "deleted version" of Zira's death, I'll have to look that up.

    Who's Gurgi, though?
  • Cea
    avatar
Gurgi is the weird annoying creature thing that follows the main characters around in The Black Cauldron.
  • Kryptoncat
    avatar
Zira's deleted death scene is the creepiest piece of animation I've had the pleasure of seeing. Just, that whisper and the following music... "No. Never."
  • krazy-katana
The Dip does deserve the number one spot, but on a personal level, just hearing the gunshot from that scene from Bambi gives me the chills. I still remember watching it at a young age and losing my shit. Especially when he starts calling out to her, and the cold way the buck tells him that she's gone. GOD.
  • MYDJCROW
    avatar
Poor Frollo. He should have won over Esmeralda purely on the fact that he gave us all "Hellfire."
  • DragonDandelion
    avatar
Wow... somebody's been hitting the tv tropes wiki. O.o

Not that I mind; this was a great list & I'm honored to have stayed up late enough to get on the first page. YAY!

All were great examples, and yeah, you're right, the Dip is probably the worst way to go.

    Nella was awesome as usual.

Also... quite a few Oliver & Company comments. Could we hope for a review of that movie in the near future? I'd love to see your thoughts on it.
  • minor_fifth
I see the "you got this idea from TV Tropes" thing a lot, but I really don't think it makes sense. TV Tropes is a collection of common observations and opinions; it references us, not the other way around. Even things like "ho yay" existed before TV Tropes came along to explain them, I'm pretty sure.
  • DragonDandelion
    avatar
Yeah, but she referenced quite a few tropes by name, such as 'egregious'.

Besides, it's a good place to learn about said observations and story devices.

TV Tropes also ruins and enhances your life at the same time. ^^
  • FataMorganaPseudonym
You, um, are aware that "egregious" was actually a, you know, *word* long before TVTropes (for some reason) made a page about it, right? It's not a trope. It's a word. Seriously. A word that has been around since at least the 1500s.

Look, I like TVTropes as much as the next person, but it's not the origin of nearly as many things as people seem to think it is.
  • DragonDandelion
    avatar
I never said they created said plot devices and whatnot. I know that.

But it's a good place to learn about them though and the shorthand the site uses for the tropes are getting well known.

I probably wouldn't have given the use of 'egregious' a second thought but for the fact Nostalgia Chick has in past reviews as well as this one used the tv tropes terms for various plot/story devices.

But yeah, it freaked me out as a kid too.
  • The_Awesometeer

I still get really sad when the shoe dies
  • Medication102
Of course a douchebag like you would...
  • Semudara
    avatar
I'm sorry, who's the douchebag here?
  • Valis77
    avatar
That shoe did nothing to Judge Doom. And he has to go all badass by not only killing a baby shoe, but tortures it slow and painfully? I mean what was that shoes backstory besides being worn? Im thinking deep into this, but hey It's animation...............
  • Zydrate
    avatar
What movie was that with the guy's skin and flesh being pulled off? That was a hardcore way to die.

And for my money, the best death was Hexis's from Ferngally. I know it's not a Disney movie and it's pretty shitty movie at that, but that death was pretty badass.
  • pharmmajor
    avatar
That's from The Black Cauldron, a very underrated gem Disney made back in the 80s.
  • Zydrate
    avatar
Thanks. I'll have to check that one out.
  • Cinnamon Scudworth
    avatar
There were worse scenes than that which were cut. Google Image "Black Cauldron" and you might see a couple of VERY graphic cels.
  • LeGrotesque
    avatar
...He got sucked into a tree, how is that bad ass? Not trying to be a douche, I'm just curious as to your reasoning.
  • Zydrate
    avatar
Maybe bad ass was the wrong word to describe it. I found it to be a very brutal but very awesome death. That makes more sense, right? And it was more him turning into a skeleton first than him getting sucked into a tree that I found awesome.
  • kimikimochi  - Great list!
    avatar
UGH. The dip. *shudder* I cried like a baby the first time I saw that. It made the whole rest of the movie feel really terrifying and like something was actually at stake because all those awesome cartoon characters could be lost forever.

I remember Quasi's mom's death shaking me as a kid as well, because the camera didn't cut away from her actual moment of being killed. Usually in these kiddy animated films the camera will pan to a hand going limp or some other tell-tale sign. But no. The bitch just goes DOWN, crack, and you see her face of death. HARSH, MOVIE!

This was a really interesting little list, Lindsay! And Nella looked especially cute in this video. ;D
  • J.A.L
    avatar
I watched Quasi's mom recently and I was shocked as well because of that "in your face" type of death, if they didn't have those gargoyles for comic relief it would have been quite a badass and adult Disney movie, with comprehension for deformed people and minorities, and dealing with the issue of religious fanatism, they wanted to get away with a lot of things there.
  • penpaninu
    avatar
Hunchback came out when I was in high school and that death was so... LOUD it made my eyes bug out! Bam, Crack! on the steps. I was like "Damn, disney went there!"
  • leahonthestage
    avatar
Oh that shoe! That poor poor shoe!

The funniest thing I didn't expect to hear
today "It clearly had shoe thoughts and shoe dreams".

Let's not forget the ever popular off screen disease most parents get in the main character's backstory.
  • CronoT  - Yeah, I expected that.
    avatar
I'm 31 years old, and the scene where the toon shoe gets dipped is STILL uncomfortable to watch. It's like Zemekis wanted to shock his audience into thinking ANYTHING could happen.

Although for me the scariest moment is when Judge Doom's voice goes from regular to shrieky, and his eyes turn into knives.
  • Cinnamon Scudworth
    avatar
That was the moment in the theater when I lost it. Much of that battle was only seen through the cracks between my small fingers.
  • penpaninu
    avatar
That voice changing gave me nightmares for a month straight after seeing htat in theatres. It's still shivery to watch to this day and I'm an adult!
  • wannablessedbe
    34. I will not turn into a snake. It never helps.

(26 is No matter how attractive certain members of the rebellion are, there is probably someone just as attractive who is not desperate to kill me. Therefore, I will think twice before ordering a prisoner sent to my bedchamber.)

-- Douchette McNitpick (no relation) ;)
  • Dust
Poor shoe.. I still remember the uncomfortable silence that got in the theatre when everyone had to process that had just happened.

(After a year knocking over the 6 Dune books.. I'd recommend just finding a recap)
  • Eye Carumba
    avatar
Judge Doom gave me so many nightmares as a kid.

Nella, you're amazing for fitting "egregious" and "unfathomably redonkulous" into the same sentence.
  • tecpaocelotl
    avatar
Yeah. That dip was a bit traumatizing.
  • The_Loremaster  - Wait wait wait just one second
    avatar
How can you include being eaten alive on the list and NOT mention Rattigan feeding his drunken henchman to his pet cat??? Not only was it gruesome and horrifying, but it was done DURING A SONG NUMBER!
  • LeGrotesque
    avatar
It just added to the WTF-factor... That and that he was voiced by the late great Vincent Price. That scene was just O___o dnw.
  • penpaninu
    avatar
Ratigan didnt play :P He gets massive props for makig his henchmen sing right after watching that!
  • Archedgar
    I enjoyed the list.

None of these deaths ever scared me, I guess I didn't get into it like most kids.
  • YouAskedForIt
    Oscar material.. Oscar Meyer.
  • Victor Clark

The blonde chick in Atlantis didn't die of Gravity. She's shown waking up on the ground (which was established earlier to be really soft) to see the airship crush her.
  • UchaNekome
    avatar
Actually she did die. She was dieing when she shot the baloon and it fell on top of her then the volcano erupted and the physicly able where having a tough time escapeing that unatually flowing lava. Obviously she dies.
  • Moon Spirit

Oh man! I had an idea for a list of Top 10 Disney Deaths for my own webshow! Only it wasn't about the most memorable deaths, but the worst way to die in a Disney movie. I hope I can still get that done without ripping you off Lindsey.

But nevertheless, nice list, though it differs on how I would handle it.
  • Fantasgasmic
    avatar
I'm pretty sure gravity didn't kill Mufasa, he should be in the crushed to death category. You know what they say,"it isn't the fall that kills you, it's the thousands of stampeding wildebeests below that trample you to death."
  • FieldMarshalPatton^3
well not so much crushed more like lots and lots of stompage and blunt trama to the head...but close enough
  • Razorgeist
    avatar
Okey I dont care what anyone says. The Dog falling on the 3rd rail in "Oliver and Company"...what the fuck! Great Kobain's ghost Im 27 and that just made me pause.
  • Comidia Del Arte
    avatar
Gotta say, favorite disney death scenes for me include

Ratigan's Death (This includes the epic fight scene cause Basil almost died, and that was pretty epic)
    Dr. Facilier's Death
    Frollo's Death
    Quasi's Mom's Death
    and Ursual's Death
  • penpaninu
    avatar
What about the Beasts' death? He DID die! He onyl got out of that one okay thanks to the L word making a loophole! His wound was bleeding and everything. It scared me so much as a kid.
  • fanime1
    avatar
I don't remember any lesbi...Oh! You mean love. JK XD
  • Larry
    avatar
I wonder if Ursulas death is a reference to Call of Cthulhu
  • Guild Navigator
    avatar
^ Funny thing,I've always been reminded of the ending of Call of Cthulhu by that Little Mermaid scene,too...

Why was Lindsay reading Dune? Anyway, the best death scene from a purely artistic point of view is from Snow White. The deranged look of murderous intent in the Wicked Queen's eyes is just amazing. And then the vultures with that "We gunna be eating good!" look. The second best death belongs to Maleficent. That death cry the demon-dragon gives is just unforgettable. The death of Mother Gothel in Tangled, however, reminded me of Horror of Dracula more than anything.
  • Yeahwhatever
Here's the really amazing thing about the Shoe getting dipped....

Did you know.... according to the Commentary Track of Roger Rabbit....that, despite this scene being as traumatizing as it already was to kids... before it was released, the MPAA actually objected to the original cut of this scene.

Originally, the shoe made a horrible, high-pitched, ear splitting noise, much like a mouse or squirrel being mutilated.

The MPAA was really upset with the scene, and the director replaced it with the soft whimpering heard here.

While some might say that the shoe's soft whimpering is disturbing in a sad way, anyone who has heard the shrill sounds that rodents make when being hurt (for instance, ever heard a mouse in a trap, or a pest control agent poison rats?), knows that this kind of sound is absolutely unbearable to anyone with a soul.

So, for the #1 choice, keep in mind what this film could have been like if the MPAA had not been disturbed on your behalf.
