An S video cable will help with your text woes, if your TV supports it. It won't make everything better, but the text will be much easier to read, and you'll be able to make out other fiddly little details a bit better. Especially versus standard video cables.

Survival horror is all about unconventional weaponry. Gotta kill something and all you have are (albeit some very strange) tools? Mod them to make them killing weaponry.
But yeah, the flame thrower. Oxygen rich environment + flames that eat oxygen + a somewhat limited oxygen supply = not a good idea. Plus, the game vaguely hints at some sort of fire suppression system on the ship. Wouldn't that flame thrower trigger it?

Strange things aside, I had a bit of a pet peeve with the navigation screen. They get props for finally making a 3D map for areas that show more than one floor in the same spot, but even with the GPS style tracking system, I found myself wandering around a maze of halls trying to figure out where they wanted me to go.

Maybe I just haven't played long enough or something.

Totally on you with the "remote circular saw" thing. If you want to give a fun but ridicilously contrived toy to a player, at least think of a plausible explanation for it.

Also, I've come to hate when the game gets categorized to "survival horror". For me, only the oldest of those games (Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill 1 and 2) were true to that title - as in "normal, vulnerable human being trying to use anything in his immediate environment to survive". Space Marine with pulse rifles, telekinetic powers and remote controlled circular buzzsaws - how difficult is it for him to "survive", really?

Bagu: There have been earlier games with similar maps (like Metroid Prime), but I actually hate Dead Space's map - in the larger areas, it usually defaults to a totally useless position, and I have to fiddle to see where I actually am.
Oh, and there's a button that creates a string of lights, pointing you to your next objective, so you can't really get lost in the game.

Anyway, great review, as always. I totally agree that the games feels like any number of other games, and everything certainly feels extremely artificial (even by game standards), but Dead Space is still rather fun.

Those weapons do sound a bit odd for inside a spaceship, but they also sound very handy for visiting new worlds. I don''t know the game, but I think it is a save bet that the spaceship was designed to go from one planet to the next.

Also, don't knock the future. If you went back 20 years from now and told people we'd have cellphones half the size of your hand, with which you can also shoot pictures and videos play computer games and stuff... If you told them we'd have flatscreen no more than an inch thick... If you told them we have computers that fit in your briefcase, that can connect you to the internet, without using cables... If you told them that screw-up drunk of a son of president Bush would one day be president of the US himself... People would laugh in your face too!

A little Clarification
written by Coldguy , October 28, 2008
Believe it or not you can use the rock band drums on guitar hero, they made it that way for people like you and me who realized this is nothing more then milking a cash cow.

As for dead space, it is ok. You said it best that it is RE4 in space and to me you need more innovation in order to be a great game.

To answer the STORE Question in the most GEEKY WAY !!!

I would say that these are actually NANOMACHINE MANUFACTURES so you insert a Log which would work as a MANUAL for those nanomachines to built let's say a flamethrowers, so that is why you can get a flamethrower in a store... and we can also think since you're a salvage guy you have the clearance to buy those stuff smilies/cheesy.gif

but appart from the GEEKIEST WAY TO ANSWER THAT, I would say that yeah...it's retarded to have store like that smilies/cheesy.gif

Nice review smilies/smiley.gif

All the stuff you listed from the store is stuff that you can only buy when you have the right schematic (sp?) so I guess the guy who is entitled to buy 40 gallons of napalm can because he has the schematic etc.

The buzz saw thing is really awesome but yes I did wonder what madman came up with such a device...

I to wondered why the statis module was machine powered and not done via mind control.

The zero gravity + outside parts take a while to get used to, the sound of being outside made my ears hurt like hell at first because its sort of like your ears have popped.

I'm actually only on Chapter 4 but it's a really awesome game so far, then again I play on PC and RE4 sucked on PC so I haven't had much experience with it for comparison (And I have still yet to pick it up for the Wii...)

Flamethrower...IN SPACE!!
written by grande42xcom , October 28, 2008
If my memory serves me right...they used a flame thrower in SPACE MUTINY, although that's not saying much in terms of scientific viability. They also used a flame thrower in ALIEN, remember?

I haven't played the game yet, and I don't plan on doing so. The thing with survival horror IN OUTER SPACE is, can't they just nuke the damn ship? Did they know it was infested with evil alien zombie bad guys? If they've got fucking radio controlled circular saws, don't they have radar or scanners or something? Gimme a break!

Yeah I can feel the pain of having to play 7th Generation games on standard TV and having to read the tiny texts, I have a HDTV but it's in the family room and my parents for some reason doesn't want to give me any privacy of letting me play my games in peace. So I'm force to use SDTV in my room =/

As for the answer to your questions.

1. Well the flamethrower fuel thing is pretty simple. Isaac (the character you play as) is an engineer, and since he doesn't know dip shit bout guns and weapons, he has to fend for himself with tools found in the station. The flamethrower is most likely used for welding stuff together and construction within the space station, but I do have to admit, the fact you can use a flamethrower in space where there is infinite amounts of oxygen, I guess in the station it has a controlled amount where it doesn't make the flame go crazy.

2. The Line Gun kind of puzzles me myself, it looks more like a buzzsaw crossbow then any powertool I've seen ^^; The Ripper, well I guess is since it has more range then a regular circular saw, I think it's mainly used to cut down objects or metal stuff that's too far out for the regular saw.

And that's all I can answer, even though I already love and beat the game O:

Great review. You really put it into perspective. Seems like a game I could waste 50 bucks on and beat in 3-4 days. And go .. "Well..time to trade in"

Thanks for the review though. When I DO get a HI DEF TV, Ill buy a PS3. Until then. I refuse to buy into the market. I still say Computer gaming is where its at.

I like your reviews. One might call you nitpicky, but really, at the end it all boils down to you telling us about things that can ruin suspension in disbelief; one of the most important things in a game. As someone who would like to get into making games, this stuff is good to know about. Nice review, as usual.

Questions answered
written by watchyuhdoin , October 28, 2008
Just to add to another comment from some guy who's name I'd have to scroll up to see (And quite frankly, I'm just lazy right now...), The flamethrower, and it got me killed finding this out... In some instances where you're in a zero O2 area, has no flame. This leaves you just wasting fuel and dying in the most pathetic way possible.

And while I'm at it, the Line Gun. It's just like a Supped up Plasma cutter, designed to rip through thick, larger amounts of ore and other debris from the planet. As for the secondary attack, it's probably used to clear... whatever they're digging for, off of the walls of caves, or to blast out an area that you cannot reach all together to make an opening. Who knows?

The ripper... actually took me ten seconds to pull something out of my ass for this one... and it's a stretch... But lets say, just for the sake of argument that you were just lying around one day and spilled something on your carpet... Don't laugh... hehe... and you find yourself thinking.. "Huh? I think I'll just rip it out". Hence the ripper! HHAHA

The Force Gun. It could be used to clear out loading sites from debris, or even clean off the ship... at a reasonable distance. The way they describe it is clearly to inform you on the impact for enemies.

Whereas I have no explaination for the stasis and kinesis modules... but your reaction. GO... SCIENCE!!! You're fuckin awesome, later dude.

Once again a great Spoony review. Resident Evil 4 in space seems like a hell of a lott of fun, it reminded me of System Shock 2 also, which im playing again atm.

I think ill give this game a rent, even if its only for the fact that its like System Shock and RE4.
Copying a good game actually makes for decent games most of the times, even if they are copies.

RockBand Hasbeen.

You start off and everything is doubled vision and there is a delay on the controls.
You start off playing soup kitchens, as you go along and earn money and send your character to rehab the controls tighten and things gt easier, along with new song.

Then you hit pro eventually as you get bigger hgomes and grow your army of groupies, you get original songs with the notes coming fast and furious. Do well enough and you hit zen mode, kind of guitar hero bullet time. It would be awesome

The Weapons, Stasis, and Kinesis modules
written by Bennikane , October 31, 2008
So, its probably really sad I can answer these for the most part, but yeah. Here it goes:

To start, Isaac Clarke isnt a space marine or super soldier, he is an engineer who is sent to diagnose and repair the communications outtage on the USG Ishimura. More backstory can be found in the form of internet comic/webisodes. Anyway, the weapons and modules.

Plasma Cutter: Its a High Energy Mineral Cutter. Mining tool, used to chip away at rocks brought aboard.

Line Gun: Yeah, you got me, used to chip away larger chunks?

Ripper: Imagine a portable bandsaw, capable of yet again taking off chunks of stone.

The biggest one, the "flamethrower". Its actually called a Hydrazine torch, as someone above noted it would be mostly used for welding, etc. Thats why the items are available in the store, all the weapons *excluding the Pulse Rifle* are designed to be engineering/mining/maintence tools, which fits your character being an engineer.

Stasis Module: Designed to help repair fast moving machinery. Not to my knowledge ment to be used on people or creatures, but that is an obvious use. Imagine trying to fix a hydraulic door, while its on the fritz and and opening and closing enough to rip your hand off within like, a quarter or less of a second.

Kinesis Module: Thinking along the lines of the engineering/mining, it would have been used to lift heavy machinery/chunks of rock so it wouldnt take 5 guys or some form of a lifter.

So, Im sorry this probably turned out a lot longer than I was hoping, but being a game designer/artist student and seeing a game where just about everything is actually explained, I get defensive.

I agree that the controls or Resident Evil 4 were really good and I don't see a problem with other games using it. I mean pretty much every first-person game used the WASD control scheme. Because it's a good way to do it. I have to say though I didn't have a problem with changing weapons in the inventory screen. In fact I really liked the new inventory system in RE4.

I really wish the Wii would let me use the stranded controller for more of the modern games.

About the store, one thing that got me about the store in RE4 Why couldn't I just pop that guy in the face and steal all his guns? Also, about the stuff in system shock 2, ok so it's more realistic for there to be chips and soda but how realistic is it for those things to help heal your lacerated arm. ^_^

About the weapons, The timed mine function of the line gun might be for dislodging things from large asteroids. I don't know how the remote controlled saw blaid works but I could imagen guiding it through a small space to cut power cords or something. Hell maybe it is just in case you need to cut a tree down.

Well, about the telecenetic devises, It could just be a weaponised version of the artificial gravity that is used on the ship. I mean if you were a salvage operator, you'd be working in derelict or damaged ships right? So if something starts collapsing on you it might be advantages to use the force thing to push it away.

I'm glad you had fun Spooney. ^_^

The whole reason why they sell plasma cutter ammo and ripper ammo, flame thrower fuel, etc. Is because that those are all designed for mining and the miners are expected to maintain their own equipment.
