This was the first "Spoony Experiment" I ever saw, and this made me love the series! It's sad that he is no longer doing "The Final Fantasy Series", I figured he was going to do Final Fantasy X. But I still love his new reviews, Dirty Dancing was great, and so was this, all you "That Guy Friends" will LOVE this anthology!

This is one of the first Spoony's I saw and even though I never played FF (nor cared for it much) I loved this.

But beware: one of the episodes - the 2nd one I think - is pretty painful to watch (the demonstration of spell drawing or something), which was kinda the point, but I guess some could give up on the "series" because of that. My suggestion - don't, you'd be missing some really great stuff. Also, I'm sad Spoony never really made a "Conclusion", the series just stops suddenly..

umm the way you make talk about the game of course its going to look shit especially this is how you really see the game. I can do this to any of the best games of all time and it will make it look like shit. Your really trying to hard, but I got to admit it was pretty funny. I just hope you werent serious. I mean I understand somethings that can be annoying but the Gunblade? really? Like there has never been 1 million weapons just as crazy and you spent like 3 mins on it. Now FFVIII probably itsnt the best FF (FF6 is!) but its one of the best for sure.

The gunblade never made sense to me. Doesn't help the barrel of the gun part seems to be non-existent... I mean, wouldn't pulling the trigger on a bullet which had nowhere to go be dangerous?

The magic system is... Stupid. On the one hand, it is just as annoying as it sounds to draw all that magic. But on the other side... Once you have 99 of some of the spells, you're never going to want to cast again because you've essentially turned your character into an invincible god powered by arcane magic and strange summons.

And I admit its been about eight or nine years since I've played the game... But I could swear that once you summon something once, you could maybe not skip it, but get an abbreviated version of the summon.

I hated Final fantasy 8. The graphics are awesome for being on a PlayStation but I hate the game play so much. I also didn't like the plot very well, I didn't get that far because of the really bad game play. About the game play, the game play is really wrong and I really hate that you have to drain mana from your enemies. The summons are too weak and too common, and for example Ifrit is just as strong as Fire 2/Fira as in other games. There's also too much running around, and the things the other people tell you seems sometimes unimportant. Then its also a bit hard to know where you are supposed to go.
About the other FF games. FF7 and FF6(same as 3) are some of the best games I ever played so I don't have much to say about them here. FF9 was also really good but I had to rush trough the game as I borrowed it. FF10 was kinda good, but there some thing I don't like about that game tough. I never accepted FFX-2 as a FF game and never played it, and never played FF11 as well as its online. I just bought FF 12 this summer and I don't like they got rid of the old turn based and turned into a wannabe-MMORPG like game, but I managed to play with it and the plot seems interesting.

I couldn't agree more with what you said, and I even forgot about the stupid card game system. I never got past the first disc of FF8, mainly because I played it at a friend's house and the game froze at the final cut scene, but in a way I'm glad I never saw the rest of the game because the first disc was just bad enough. You might as well have your GFs be your fighting characters because standard weapons don't do jack.

i never knew so many FF fanboys were located on this site judging by some of the comments. I'l give FF its due, the series is a pretty solid series (im mentally blocking 10 through 12) but it aint Jesus people. FF8 really is the weak link in the chain. the levelling up/ junctioning system is just so god-awful, i was a fan of FF when i played 9 and i wanted to check out the rest of them, but 8 just didnt stick with me at all, probably proof that cutting edge graphics (at the time) didnt make an enjoyable game.

and maybe i was wrong about the TGWTG community being in general higher brow than youtube, well done to the minority who are spoiling it, you have proved you are closed minded to opinions.

I loved watching this series on Spoony's site. I mostly enjoy the Final Fantasy games (I started with 9 and revisted some of the past ones) but I'll never say the games could do no wrong. (Who though the god-awful draw system was a good idea?) I guess you could say I'm a Final Fantasy fan, but not a fanboy.

My GOD. I remember watching this for the first time when I was introduced to your reviews, and this was what sold me to your superiority among video game reviewers. I had thought that you were going to complete the entire game, but then again, if I had nearly the frustration that you had playing this game (...actually, I did), then I'd have stopped as soon as possible too!

Ah, now that's out of the way, this review was pretty good. A lot of people are hating, but for a first time watcher of these critiques, this was damn entertaining. People are going to hate on this video for the sure purpose of hating on it, but nuts to them!

This is the best use of my internet ever. Seriously, you guys defending drawing, suck dick. It's a terrible design flaw whether you had to use it or not, and you can't defend it by saying "you can refine magic" because refining magic turned FF8 into an entirely one-sided and unbalanced game. Either it was boring because you had to grind too damn much, or it was boring because you looked at all enemies and they died. You never even have to level up, just junction Death to your status attack and you're set forever.

One of my all time favorite Spoony reviews :3 I really hope you continue it or at least review another FF game like you did with FFVII (which was also an epic hallucinatory review XD ).

I also find it hilarious how some people are getting butt hurt over this. This is FUNNY. Who cares if he's "right or wrong" about what he's saying? Aren't reviews purely opinionated anyways? By complaining about how wrong he is or being a jerk only proves you are one of those creepy fanboys that Spoony mentions throughout the run of the reviews.
I also think it's a little unfair to say "I'm never going to watch any of his reviews because of audio issues". I'm not having problems at all :|

It was funny, though I very much disagree with almost everything you're saying ^_^

FF8 is one of my favourites of the series, mostly because they did try to do something different with it, and lets face it Final Fantasy repeats itself a lot. I found the drawing/junctioning system difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it the game play becomes much easier. Also the graphics are worth mentioning, after the eyesore that was FF7 the quality difference here was astounding. The only thing about the game I found very annoying was trying to find all the goddam pieces so you could make new weapons.

I'd actually like to see someone brave enough to take on FF7 and make fun of it that way, FF8 isn't a big deal because not a whole lot of people loved it, but FF7 fans are so rabid you might wanna think about going into hiding after ripping into it.

you want something worst then the Gunblade? how about a sword with an ignition, that rev's and doesnt need gas to run? Play the first level on Devil May Cry 4 and you will see what im talking about. Now go make a video of how bad Devil May Cry 4 is. Good Luck =)

Yeah, I guess that's as silly as the gunblade, but unlike FF8 the Red Queen wasn't a selling point of DMC4. I didn't even know he had a weapon like that until I played it, and as far as gameplay goes it was very fun using the Red Queen.

I've been wondering when we'd see this on this website. Now I can comment. This too was my first taste of the "Spoony Experiment" and I've never been the same since. Indeed did Spoony not only touch on the other aspects of this game that made it "different" but cast a new light on the game to not only notice the deep wrinkles that would otherwise be lost in the limelight but makes you stop to think what you're actually playing instead of just another Final Fantasy game.

It's one of his first reviews, and yes I do know about it, and there is nothing we can do right now unfortunately.

You know, using Audacity you can make whatever plays out of one speaker play from BOTH speakers.

But that would require Spoony (or someone working for TGWTG) to edit the audio, redub the video, and THEN upload it...not sure if you guys wanna go through all that trouble just for ONE speaker.

I enjoy some of Spoony's videos, these ones, I disagreed on most of his points, which seem to be mostly whining, he gives no real reason for his contention for the game other than his dislike for the story, he is not being objective at all, and sorry, but it just feels like an attempt to get more views by ripping on a huge brand name.

Is it meant as satirical comedy? well where is the funny part?

To me, the real insult is FFIX and on (except FFVII:CC, and jury still out on XIII).

(Yes I subscribed after months of lurking just to post this smilies/wink.gif)

FFIX is one of the better Final Fantasies because it reverts back to the original ones, and less like FFX.

i haven't played 8 yet, i heard it was good but not the best in the series

9 is my personal favorite

a few things

1. your voice was kinda off sync when you were talking
2. when the game was playing, your voice i heard better in right headphone, and my left i heard the game better, not a big deal but just thought I'd point it out.

The first 3 aren't that good, but 4 and onward are some of funniest videos on the internet (as far as I know). FF8 is actually a personal favorite of mine, but that doesn't stop me from laughing. Cmon people, show some self-distance!

Aww, I wish this review could be more finalized. Maybe add a extra part after part 7.
This is, by far (not saying I dont love his other reviews (X-Files and the Thing, among others, rock)), The Spoony Experiments best review IMO.

I absolutely love ff8, but I know its flaws, and these parts demonstrate it so hilariously well.

A review of 6, 7, 9, 10 or 12 would also be great. X-2 is too easy to rant.

FFIX is one of the better Final Fantasies because it reverts back to the original ones, and less like FFX.

Well, FFX does suck harder .

Now the problem I find with IX is that it is a precursor of the lame story for X, though I can't recall if the female lead was as depressing as Yuna is on X, The characters are forgettable and childish, I don't consider the reintroduction of black mages and Mogles to be a regression, just use of nostalgia as a selling point, to find more issues with it I think I would have to play it again.

Anyway, of course everyone is entitled to their opinions, I've encountered people who think IX is the best of the whole series, I just don't agree with them, of course, I could come up with better arguments for my position than "they're just sissy fighting" and "The CGI doesn't match the gameplay".

Your review was funny, even though I disagree with you on a couple of things that you said. Personally, like most of the final fantasy games, I enjoyed 8, the story was good, most of the characters were like able and if you knew your way around it, the game play was fun. In my opinion, the worst FF of all time was 2 and if you disagree, u should go back and play FF2 and see how broken and uneven it is.

Even though a lot of people might not like Spoony for these vids, if you just look at these from an unbiased point of view and think rationally about this he makes some good point. Also the gunblade might not be the first ridicilous weapon i ever saw, but it does take the cake for just being broken in its design.

Well coming from someone who is a fan of Final Fantasy VIII, this is really funny and I liked the points you've made.

Although I personally defend the idea of the Gunblade. It reminded me of a "reverse musket", where as a musket is shooting/stabby in its primary/secondary function, the Gunblade is vice versa. It's just the fact they didn't take the concept far enough and pretty much all the attacks are melee and maybe magical if you include the Limit Breaks. Which then made me agree on the design aspect of it just being a heavy blade with gun grip. Although the handle on Squall's model is fine to me. But Seifer's the one to be weary on wielding, it's like you're holding a hinge because of the angle of grip.

I liked it overall, onto the next.

its an ok review, but there is allot of things that I don't agree with you on. Final Fantasy 10 was maybe the best final fantasy, and big ass swords is just something the game is known for. Go on Wow right now and you will see giant ass weapons make up half the game lol. Not sure if its interestign enough to watch the rest of the review.

Yeah, i liked the Final Fantasy VIII, i think 8 was the last game that i liked from Final Fantasy Series. I-IV didnt hit me actually, V was awesome and so was VI, VII was too short from my point of view and well, im still in the end of VIII, which was the first FF i got and yet, i never finished it... Guess i got bored in the end of just training everyone to level 100...

I couldn't agree with this review anymore. This is how the game IS. I mean in retrospect this is basically what ff8 was. One of the best? I beg to differ. The Gunblade has to be one of the worst ideas in video game history. I mean don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of stupid weapons in video game history, but at least most of them made sense. How the hell does a gun blade even work? It was never explained. I mean why does it have a Gun handle? Might as well give him a sword.

wel i havent played FF8 but i KNOW your dead wrong about FF10, it rlly started getting messed up at FF12 i mean wtf we've had tht similar gameplay for years and suddenly it gets so complecated it doesnt even make sense and it sooooooooo tedious it's not fun. but the worst one is FF3(the best is FF4)but rlly nothing could be more complicated than FF12. the only thing they're producing tht's still awesome is KH and lets praaaaaaay tht they dont mess tht up(knowing square they probably will[REACTION COMMANDS SUCK])

I'm sorry, but i fell on the other side of this fence you spoke of. I love this game, it was the first FF i played all the way through and is my favorite of the series.

Actually 7 marked the big change in the series, where every installment including it and after would have a different battle system, different style story, and well you get the idea. I'm not sure where it started going wrong persay, i found (of the 3d ones) 7 ok, 8 my favorite, 9 awesome, 10 ok, never played 11, and 12 was pretty good.

I'm not going to go to defend it too much, but here goes my $1.50 .

That intro you had such a stink over, part of it is a dream sequence and part of it is their duel. He was having the dream after he passed out in the fight. That girl who shows up in the window has something to do with said dream, but that would give up major plot points. But anyways it doesn't make sense, because dreams don't make sense. Besides it was a really good way to throw half the plot at the player and not have them realize what the intro actually was. It was confusing, and it was a omen of things to come, or something like that ... i think.. it was definitively confusing. And it doesn't matter, because it was good eye candy, it was cool.

The gunblade you so seem to dislike.. all those questions you asked.. i believe it was all explained in game. If you're into star wars and know what a vibrablade is than you can draw the same concept of the ammunition being used in the gublade and why it had a point. I guess another comparison would be those automatic kitchen knives, the ones that move the blade forward and back. Now imagine that back and forth motion at blinding speed in the form of a vibration given off from ammo going off. Basicly in the nuttiest of shells the explosion from the ammo created an extreme vibration in the blade that made the sword cut alot better. The difference between cutting something by chopping straight down and sawing back and forth (at sonic speed). I actually found the time hitting to be rather enjoyable, alot more involving than the press a command wait 10 seconds, etc.

And you should know the reason why you cannot skip the summons, later in the game you unlock a skill that lets you multiply the damage percentage by tapping a button at certain points during the animation. This can make a decent summon into murder weapon of awesome. Just hope you're good at tapping buttons really fast.

Well thats it for my defense of my favorite FF. I respect your opinion, i hope you can respect my own. Maybe you'l like 13 better?

I never had to spend time drawing magic so I could beef up my stats, so I don't know what the hell you're talking about. I do agree that the gunblade is very impractical, but I still think it's a neat weapon.
