If I had to point to one show that summed up all of Nickelodeon, it would be Double Dare. Just too classic for words.

Also, I always thought Pick It, the one where they had to dig around in the giant nose, was the hardest obstacle course section ever.

I love your reviews NC. You have surpassed the AVGN in my opinion. I remember watching this show when I was younger too and I found it extremely unfair for a kids game show. They asked a lot of questions most people don't even know. They should have stuck to stuff they had on Nickelodeon. And thanks for that last part. "No, this person had talent." lmao

Back when this show was on I watched it all the time. Marc Summers was in my and my sister's mind the most famous man in our universe. The things they did to him would be enough to make any body snap, let alone a man with a psychological disorder. Always kept his composure, at least until the commercial. A true professional if there ever was one. He deserves that award.

I used to watch this show non-stop next to Wheel of Fortune, Fun House, Guts, and Legends of the Hidden Temple. Not only was this show messy but it was also fun to watch and it made me have a dream of getting a bucket load of 100% Nick Slime dumped on my head. Great review. Also Marc is still the man.

written by Curiosity Inc , July 13, 2008
It's great to see a hilarious review that doesn't tear the subject to shreds. The NC has officially proven that he can be just as funny with praise as he can with bile, and that's something that many critics can't say. Kudos, NC.

Funnily enough, I saw an interview with Mark Summers that addressed his OCD. In the interview, he points out that if you watch the first couple of seasons, you'll notice that Summers doesn't get a drop of slime on him. Eventually, however, the producers approached Summers and said "Mark, we've got to show you getting more involved," and so he agreed to be slimed. He really is an inspiration for everyone with OCD, Asperger's, etc. and he does deserve a medal for that much.

Oh, and in regard to the money: $700 seemed like a lot more as a kid, didn't it?

As for the review, I thought this was a great review with a variety of jokes that were always just long enough (though the marijuana sequence was understandably slow). The opening was inspired and the comments were spot-on. Very well done.

Marc Summers also hosted the awesome What Would You Do, which ended with the Pie Pod that threw four pies into a person's face. Pretty fun to watch the series all the way through, as the damn thing clearly worked less and less well every time. Guess it wasn't in the budget to get it fixed.

Another good review NC. I do think it is interesting to see you do something that you really liked for a change of pace (especially after the Captain Planet review). To me, Double Dare along with "You Can't Do That on Television" made Nickelodeon in the 80's and made me stop everything to watch them. I think Double Dare is due for a revival.

Really cool review, and a cool show.
written by NoTaste , July 14, 2008

Its cool to see you doing more general nostalgia trips like this rather then straight up reviews. Also its cool to see you do things you like rather then just things you hate. It helps keep things fresh. This show however always held a back seat to wild and crazy kids. Sure this was cool but with wild and crazy kids theyd take like 100 kids and have em do amazing things like run around in bumper boats with giant nerf guns attatched with paint playing war games. Kids with guns is for the win.

Oh, you still got it, NC ;)

Yeah, a great job done as usual, NC smilies/smiley.gif. Yes, that I do truly remember this one, the sloppiest and most slippery show on TV (no doubt, that it's still on that Nick GaS channel these days, you guys), and that yeah, I already knew that Marc Summers has/had OCD, but that even now, I truly didn't know also what else he went through smilies/sad.gif.

Also, NC and everyone else, that one of the other things that I've recently come across, again, that even now deserves more praise and only slight critique like this episode of yours is the Balto trilogy, since that after I finally watched through the whole documentary from the UK version of the DVD on YouTube and me getting more insight into the whole bit about him, that I realize now, more so than before, just how much of a real hero that he was, huh smilies/cool.gif? Also, as extra, that just one of the good little "tributes" to him that I know of these days is the "If everyone cared about Balto" AMV/Balto tribute that Shadow2Kurby came up with on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXXqTjfbP9g smilies/grin.gif.

Reminds me of a show that used to air on YTV...
written by Alexjr1543 , July 14, 2008
I think that the show it reminds me of is called "Uh-oh". It's quite similar to this in the messy factor. There are three teams, two teammates per team. There is also a wheel you spin to determine what you must do. Sometimes, it's some crazy timed challenge, like getting pies thrown at them or having to go through an evil obstacle course, and sometimes, it's a quiz where one teammate gets locked in a chamber and if the other player gets a question wrong, the guy in the chamber gets a vat of toxic sludge dumped all over him. These two shows are so much alike, and yet, so different...

By the way, does anyone know any Japanese game shows where you have to do the craziest stunts and maybe people end up dying? If so, please let me know. I'd love to see them. I've heard of them before, and from what I've heard, they make Fear Factor look like Sesame Street...

He had the perfect date planned for the night after this shit-stopper but then he got...elephant splooge all over him. Who wouldn't spend four hours trying to get every single speck out. Nick had so many great shows when I was little. Now it's basically crap. Maybe you should cover the top 11 Nick shows? Seriously, there was Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Figure it Out, Rugrats (the old episodes), Doug, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, GUTS, All That, Hey Arnold...so many memorable shows.

I've also never heard of a dutch version of this (not to say it didn't exist, but I never saw it). What I was thinking about was on the Brittish kids channel named TCC or The Children's Channel. It was something like this, but at a slower pace...

I remember Double Dare 2000, and it used to be one of my favorite TV shows of all time! Thinking back, it's 08 now, so it was 8 years ago. That means I was 7 when Double Dare 2000 was around! Wow! Those were the golden years. smilies/tongue.gif

Also, he deserved a better award. How about a "Dude, you got bigger balls then Chuck Norris" award? Now that's deserving of a game host that works through the messiest situations with OCD. smilies/cheesy.gif

It's shows like this that make me feel bad I missed the vast majority of cable in the early 90s. I would have grown up a VASTLY different kid. VASTLY different.

I LOVED this show when I was a kid. I watched this thing religiously until it went off the air. They did try to revive it with D.D 2000 but it just wasn't the same without Marc Summers.

Legends was great in the beginning, but, I don't know, it became too repetitive after the first few months. Always the same puzzles recycled after a month and the host was so...predictable and bland. It got to the point where I was well "Now it's time for Almec to tell us the legend(adventure)of....but pay careful(close) attention guys because this(your knowledge) will bring you one step closer to the temple." D.D was unpredictable which made it great.

I vote Wild and Crazy kids for the next Nick kids gaming show. Or the late 80's early 90's nick series like "Salute your Shorts" or "Are you afraid of the dark?"

w remember watching this show growing up. It really was a quarky one. Nickelodeon really had a knack for coming up with the strangest ideas for game shows. And Marc Summers was really what made the show. When I learned about his OCD thing years later, I really did wonder how he managed to host Double Dare.

On the bright side, one of the more recent things he hosted, History I.Q. on the History Channel, included no salad bowls or human tacos. And rewarded people with far more money.

I watched Double Dare all the time. Remember that other show on Nicolodeon that Mark Summers hosted?

I think double dare introduced the slime that became Nicolodeon's Gak. Or maybe that was You can't do that on Television.

It sucked when this went off the air in America. I think it continued longer in foriegn countries like Australia, though. On the rare day when Nickolodeon showed the international programmes, I remember being excited to see double dare on TV again.

And I notice that you drew no distinction between Double Dare and Family Double Dare.

Nick in the 90s was the best for all kids. They had shows like Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, Ahhhh!!! Real Monsters, Afraid of the Dark, Ka-Blam!!, Angry Beavers, My coisin Skeeter, and other shows where kids compete called Double Dare, and some show which i cant remember the name of where Nick celebrities had to guess words of a sentence or something that was on a big head about a catagory.

These days all Nick has is these crappy shows like Zoey 101, Romeo, spongebob, and a few other shows i cant remember.

From what i been seeing, shows these days seem to be either really stupid (like spongebob) or about teenagers and thier problems like (zoey 101). I also been seeing that shows with violence, and some creativity that is really funny is taken off the air. Even Loony Toons is not shown on the first 100 channels onless your way up in the 200s and 300s.

I think what it is that society dont want thier kids to be watching these cartoons with alot of violence or disgusting things so the industry stopped making these cartoons which were really funny like Ren and Stimpy. Since we are also seeing that cartoons are getting dumber and dumber, and again like i mentioned, about teenagers and thier problems. So im guessing this is because society wants the TV to educate thier kids about teenager problems while beliving that kids are also not understand simple jokes.

Like i said, im just guessing what the cause is, but i hope this gets fixed soon cause i havent seen Nick in so long because of its programs and know many friends who used to watch this channel.

Disney also gone this way, because we dont see alot of the old Mickey Mouse gang anymore. Like Nick, we get dumbed down shows and teenage type soaps.

This is why i dont watch those channels any more. I am a big fan of cartoons and thier humors as well as funny programs but when these kinds of things happens, u wonder why are we getting this crap we see on TV for cartoons. As well as other programs.

you cant forget What would you do, that show had a ton of crazy crap happening and Mark Summer hosted that one as well, look at the sets for these shows, for a guy who had to have every thing neat and in order that had to drive him crazy and yet he never showed that he hated doing those shows, I too would like to say for bringing joy and laughter to my TV as a child he deservers that "you have balls' award.
besides that great video, brought back great memorys, I dont mind remembering this one.

Mr. Saturn, are you thinking of Figure It Out? I also like another show hosted by Mark Summers called What Would You Do, but it really wasn't as good as Double Dare.

Oh man, you really took me back. Nickelodeon had a lot of stuff back then that involved slime or pies or something. Double Dare was the most prominent example, but What Would You Do had plenty of that also, and I remember even Figure It Out had that to some extent; midway through it some secret action would be announced to the audience (but not to the panelists), and any panelist who did it would get slimed. If someone didn't do it the host usually tricked them into it, as a randomly selected kid in the audience would win a prize if one of the panelists got slimed. I remember occasionally they had the jokey "being a panelist", meaning that they would all instantly get slimed.

And, of course, let us never forget You Can't Do That On Television. Technically it wasn't really a Nickelodeon production (it was made in Canada), but DARN was that a good series. You should review it sometime! The whole slime falling on people if they say "I don't know" was a trademark of the series. Strangely, my parents didn't want me to watch You Can't Do That On Television...looking back, I can't see what there was to object about it. Most likely all they knew of was the name and assumed it was some kind of risqué show or something. I wish it would come out on DVD...

written by Shining Aquas , July 14, 2008
Yah, really. I couldn't believe it either.

Doug, it is true that you need serious balls to do that, but you also need some inhuman composure.
I would seriously just wait for the one episode where he literally flips out and just stabs his throat with the mike for stress relief purposes.

Alas, like all great Nickelodeon shows, it was canceled far too early. Why must that fate be passed only to the best shows?

Somebody explain to me how shows like Firefly lose to something like Joe Millionaire.
