Yet another amazing video by the Nostalgia Critic. Simply amazing.

I think everyone had a weird relationship with the Captain Planet show. I didn't particularly care for it as a kid myself, but always found myself watching it. Thank you for exposing the show for what it really was: Crap.

I was forced to watch this pile because it was on before WCW Pro Wrestling back in the day. Man this show was garbage. I enjoyed the review, but felt you missed one major storyline. Captain Pollution. Yeah, the stereotypical "Join all supervillians together to form one being of evil." Ugh, this was godawful. The only thign that made it better was that directly afterwards I got to see Bobby Eaton beat up a 5'3 wrestler by the name of Adrian Byrd every week. God Bless WCW.

Ruler!
written by Crazy Man Dan , July 07, 2008
I loved the way you worked in the "ruler" bit. You didn't bludgeon the joke to death - just three occurrences at the beginning to set it up, then on with the critique as usual. By the time the fourth and fifth hits came around, there had been so much else worth laughing at in between each that I didn't even register you had said "ruler" until swift justice had been dealt yet again. So great jokes, and a marvelously executed running gag: I call this one a success.

Thanks for another great episode. smilies/smiley.gif

Great Job
written by counselor2009 , July 07, 2008
As usual, this was a great NC segment. I remember watching this every week because it came on before the real Saturday morning cartoons started and as you said, there was nothing else on. I don't think I even had the choice for Beakman's World where I was at. There are two things I would like to address. The first is I would have thought you would have brought up the drug abuse episode (The Russian and her cousin getting addicted to some drug) since doing the PSA and cartoon all-stars shows. The second thing is I wonder why Ted Turner made the annoying one an American, maybe he has a problem with New Yorkers maybe. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Nowadays, though, I tend to watch it on Boomerang from time to time when I'm bored. It has a unique cheese factor to it.

@doctorjackal777: I distinctly remember seeing both the AIDS and gang violence when the show was still running. I thought they were pretty out there (for an environmentally-focused show, anyway) even then. Those episodes appeared on season 3 (1992-1993) and season 4 (1993-1994), respectively.

written by Ytoabn , July 07, 2008
I'm surprised that if you touched on the AIDS and Gang Violence episode, you never touched on the one where Captain Planet meets Hitler.

Seriously, you should have just said, "Good God, how could this show get any worse?", then cut to a clip of the Hitler - Captain Planet staredown, and cut back to you saying, "No, HELL NO. I'm not touching that with a 10 foot pole."

Because honestly, if you hurt yourself that much with the AIDS episode, the Nazi episode will cause your head to explode, and I rather like your head just where it is now.

written by Dr Dib , July 07, 2008
OMG, I WILL NEVER WATCH NC AGAIN, HE MADE FUN OF MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!

If you can't tell, that was sarcasm. I do like to watch Captain Planet and look forward to Earth Day because there is a marathon of the show on, but I like it because it is so bad its good. However, I really was disappointed that the review left out how it gave a bad name for Americans and glorified pretty much everyone else. Nearly all of the villains were white Americans who could care less about the environment and many times the Americans showed little care for helping the environment out. Sure, other people were more than happy to destroy it, but... well... The only (or one of the few) episodes where Captain Planet failed it was because of the American legal system!

Anyway, I'm going to be doing a review of the Drug episode in the blog while pointing out some weird things about how it portrayed America and The Soviet Union. When will this come out? Probably later today (which may be soon) when I have time.

One other thing to note is the ridiculous anti-Americanism. Not only is the American of the group the token annoying guy, but the show portrays America as practically an apocalyptic warzone in his first appearance, while the Soviet Union Linka hails from is a pristine forest. And of course, after the fall of the Soviet Union she had to be retconned into being from "Eastern Europe."

I had to cover my face the moment I heard the AIDS speech. Even with your commentary in the background, it's just painful to listen to. DX

I never liked watching Captain Planet as a kid. I just gave up and switched over to Beakman's World. Hell, in some cases, Beakman's World actually topped Bill Nye the Science Guy...THAT'S IT! Nostalgia Critic? Would you be so kind as to perform a battle of the Saturday Morning Scientists, featuring Beakman and Bill Nye? I'd LOVE to see that. =3

Yeah, Sailor Moon would be a good one to review next! XD Especially that Saban Sailor Moon proposal. (Yeah, they were planning on making it into a half-live-action, half-cg-cartoon series that resembled power rangers here in the States. The theme song always made me laugh uncontrollably!

Funny video, though I found it strange that you hated the ending theme, which I thought was actually the best part of the show. I felt the show wasn't that bad, though, if you ignored all the environmental bits.

How easily they manage to win over crowds is silly, though. You listed some examples, but nothing holds up to how in an episode one guy manages to with just a speech convince an ENTIRE MERCENARY ARMY to stop fighting for the bad guys. What's interesting is that the violence and other things (they actually said "unprotected sex" out loud?) the series got away with is the kind of thing that people now complain about networks censoring.

The ruler bit reminded me of You Can't Do That On Television. Man, now THAT was a great show.

Wow, it all makes sense - Captain Planet is homosexual.
Loved the video, but I felt kind of betrayed that you didn't have the real Mar-ti.
Don't mind me for speaking nerd but when you put Sauron's ring on- you should have been invisible (sorry, had to say that).
For the record, the best thing about this show was the theme song

PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT, OR I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!! CAAAAAAAPTAAAAAAAAAAIN PLAAAAAAAAAAAAANEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, bring it on

Well when I first watched it as a kid I thought it was alright. But after dealing with the same Earth...FIRE...WIND WATER HEART...GO PLANET spiel for a month, I just turned off the TV and put it on right before WCW came on. Which unfortunately I had to sit through that insufferable theme music.

Thank you for in grating that song back in my head, NC. Much appreciated

rip off?
written by Zomaarch , July 07, 2008
is it just me or does anyone else notice when they start speaking of the plot of Captain Planet, with the five rings and the 5 "special people" i get the feeling it's ripping off content from the Lord of the Rings. You know, the rings. Anyone else notice that?

In addition, I honestly thought That Guy was gonna pull a Green Lantern joke from somewhere. I guess I'm just stupid.

You missed out the Hitler episode, complete with Hulk Hogan handlebar mustache, how did that not get in? Either way I was looking forward to this review for a while and it didn't disappoint. I did laugh my ass right off it's hinges.

I've actually been thinking about writing a Captain Planet script. Seriously, it's a project that's been in the back of my mind. There would need to be some changes to make it...you know...good...but handled the right way it could be awesome...maybe. smilies/grin.gif
