I don't know if it's the best kid's show, but one of my favorite. The "What else you've got in there?" wins the list IMO. Why don't you try doing Freakazoid?

A lot of shows like Animanicas and Freakazoid had these weird, undertone adult jokes in it. You really don't notice it sometimes. However I was watching Freakazoid and I pointed out so many things that slipped by the censor.

That was a nice trundle through childhood nostalgia for me. I really can't believe so many slipped past. The "puberty was kind to you" comment was probably the one that made me laugh most.

Meanwhile, here comes Batman and Robin, which I anxiously look forward to. I'll probably yack more on it next week when you post your review, but I can tell that there will probably be a nuclear bomb-sized rant from The Critic, particularly if the '5 seconds' video is anything go by. (Must. Get. Image. Out. Of. Head.)

LOL, finger-Prince.

Most shows were like this running even into the early 90's. Lately kids shows are so doofy. Even Rugrats had innuendos that I didn't get until I was older. Obviously, the censors have gotten better.

I was never a huge fan of the Animaniacs, but this was pretty awesome. I love it when cartoons put in adult jokes that you don't quite catch as a youngster, but pick up on when you're older.

My personal favorite: the "Chokey Chicken" from Rocko's Modern Life.

Anyway, if you'd like to do anymore, I'd recommend one I just saw today... They played the special where the Warners are orphans and blah blah wishing star whatever... Anyway, they're harrassing this guy to adopt them and start calling him dad. Here's the lines:

Big nosed guy: I am NOT your father!
Dot: That's not what mommy said...

#2 moment

Justin:Is that a pocket elf?

Alex:No.That's my retainer case.

Justin:You don't have a retainer.

Alex:You don't know what goes in my mouth.

#1 moment

Alex:Well aren't you full of great ideas.

This isn't the only kid's show in the 90s that pushed the boundaries. Remember Rocko's Modern Life? A restaurant was called Chokey Chicken, One episode they're playing a game with a monkey poking his butt out and they're all holding paddles, there's a lot of hippo lady boob shots, etc. I also remember Sponge saying "pissed off" on Salute Your Shorts.

I remember from Dexter's Laboratory when Dexter and Deedee have decoder rings. Deedee says that what Dexter is doing is for "I-D-K-S-C's." Dexter uses his decoder ring to scramble around the letters and realizes that it meant something offencive and said, "Hey! I'm telling mom!" Later I realized that Deedee was saying "DICKS," but they scrambled the letters to get past the sensors probably.

Animaniacs was one of the greatest cartoons that Spielberg did - however they also had some of the worst characters as well. Specifically, Buttons, Mindy, Rita and Runt (Seriously. Who thought musical numbers in a kid's cartoon would actually work? Didn't they learn anything from Cop Rock or Kid Video?). Then they killed Slappy Squirrel with the same thing that killed Darkwing Duck - bringing minor, kiddie characters into the spotlight for the sake of fanservice, or worse, non-fanservice (making changes for the sake of whiny bitch parents who probably aren't letting their home-schooled mutants watch the show in the first place).

Then they did something even worse.. they inexplicably teamed up Pinky and the Brain with ELMYRA??? What the hell were these people thinking?? I hope someone got fired over that shit.

I disagree that musical numbers don't work in children's cartoons. Just look at Animaniacs itself. There was that geography song, and also the one about the presidents. Also, you should know that the majority of people who work for watchdog "parents'" groups don't even have kids of their own! Homeschooled mutants or otherwise. Isn't that terrible?

Oh wow. I couldn't stop laughing at this. I went to bed right after watching the video and I was laughing in my sleep.

Animaniacs is one of the greatest kids shows of all time. In fact, the WB had a lot of great shows that were similar to Animaniacs, like Freakazoid and Hysteria. Not to mention that they picked up the first season of Pokemon (the only good season) from where UPN left off. It was a great time to be a kid.

Kids shows today don't have the same kind of love that went into the likes of Animaniacs. None of the stuff you see today is very appealing to anyone over the age of 10. I love how Animaniacs was written in such a way that many of the innuendos slipped by the censors. That's just great creative writing. Kids will still find the show funny, but won't get a lot of the jokes, while adults can understand the jokes and find a way to appreciate the show just as much.

Thanks, NC. I'm actually inspired to go buy the DVDs of this show now.

I'm not shocked that they are in there. But it is pretty funny how they got by. I remember watching the show one time where one of the characters called Yakko "Sire," and his response was along the lines of, "Please, I'm just a kid" or something like that (been awhile since I've seen the episode, so if someone remembers the line, please correct me). I was an adult when I saw that, and I didn't get the joke until my father, who was watching it with me, pointed it out.

I have been on Youtube for hours looking at Anamaniacs/Slappy Squirrel stuff!
I'm glad I'm atleast seeing it now, because I get most of the jokes that go over any kid's head.
I say remove number 10 for the one where Dr. Scratchandsniff says "STOP PLAYING WITH MY BUST!" Reffering to his statue, or the part where Ludwig Von Beethoven reffers to himself as a pianist, though Yakko thinks he said "Penis."

Where's the Squeezy Cheese?
written by scyllacat , December 03, 2008
I can only conclude that there are a lot of very young people on this blog. I started watching Animaniacs as an adult, and I caught ALL those jokes and a lot more. I watched this for one reason and one reason only: I can't find the Squeezy Cheese.

If you want to talk about something that made it past the censor, I think it only happened once and then was pulled 4-EVAH, because no one knows what I'm talking about, and I can't find any reference on the web.

In the middle of some otherwise rational skit, for no reason, Dot does an ad for "Squeezy Cheese." It looks something like a giant mustard bottle in the middle of the stage. Dot comes on stage, wearing something like a Vanna White costume, I think, and pushes, rocks, or "rides" the bottle until she squeezes the cheese out of the top. SPLORT. Yeah. I swear, I did not make this up, it is my FAVORITE Animaniacs Adult Moment, and I wish I'd had the VCR running.
