Nice review man, excellente way to destroy this evil manga. That main character is so ennoying and lame in the same time. Oh and by the way do you like gurren lagann? I noticed the theme song in the first part of your review.

Hey, just wanted to say good video this week. Thank god you saved me from this manga. I was actually considering checking this out due to it's high popularity. Thanks, now get to One Piece (OBSESSED FAN BOY SCREAM)

04.16.2009 - 22:38 | Draxo
Heh, oddly the only interesting parts were when you were not talking about 'Mr Perfect'. So no need to apologise about that.
I avoided this Manga like the plague, purely because I find the idea of a comic about sports as ridiculous. (Like, seriously.. if you like sports.. play it, don't read about others playing it!)
-
04.17.2009 - 05:55 | BlueGoldBizarros
While Prince of Tennis is stupid, there are sports manga that are really entertaining like Slam Dunk, Eyeshield 21, Hajime no Ippo

04.16.2009 - 23:18 | xenniex - Awesome review
I had my doubts wether or not you would take the crtisism on your vids well or not. But clearly you have learned a lot from them. This review was great, i laughed hard multiple times and i'm llooking forward to your next review. Oh, and great manga choice to review, i always wanted someone to say what you just said about this piece of crap manga.
-
04.17.2009 - 01:18 | C2B - About the review
Ahhhh, I so want to scream fanboy but....
Anyway, most of the points you're critizizing (like the main character for example) are valid but in fact not really worth it. Because it's not really a flaw. It's just you're personal preferences. POT has flaws I give that to you, but the video seems so despreate to build hate on this manga by focusing on points everyone would hate but are nowhere near a flaw.
Appart from that, you're right. The term shounen usually is applied to schoolboys from 8-18 as a demographic. BUT, you can also say that a hentai (or an ecchi) is a perverted man. That doesn't change the fact that it is applied to a certain type of anime/manga which also means you CAN consider it a full-fledged gerne.
But, still. This review was far better than your old ones. So props

04.17.2009 - 00:22 | Bonkers - Shonen series and the rules...
I really liked your short introduction to the term shonen and especially your point, that you can make everything into a god damn manga, just if you show the characters in overdramatic poses.
(Like in death Note, Yugioh -seriously, it is just a cardgame!- and so on)
Heck, the "rules of mangaclichees" I am writing deal with this thing by naming Hikaru no Go (a serie about a boy that plays Go over more than 20 volumes -I like the games and the characters aren`t bad, but really, a manga?) and this one series about some gay baking bread. I mean come on, how is it even possible that this series can become so popular? I don`t hte the characters and sometimes it is somehow "cool" but you start to wonder yourself, what for stories you can create in Japan. I mean what is next? Some story about kids playing a modified version of Dreisel?
... wait.... *looks at Beyblade*Okay, to your review: This is really a shonen serie?
I mean sorry, but I thought always based on the art and the "eye-candy" that this was a series for girls. And that drawn by a man... oh well, the gender doesn`t say much about the quality of a Manga, FMA is drawn by a woman and she created at last one of the awesomest Shonen Storys I ever read.
But this... I am also really surprised about the age of the main character. I mean he is twelve, really? I thought he was 16 at last and... oh sorry, forgot the second rule of mangaclichees: Every character has to act and look at last five till ten years more mature as he is old. I mean seriously, there are some series in which the characters are what, ten year old? (Digimon and Pokemon for example) and still the characters are somehow mature enought not to cry their eyeballs out when being confronted by giant monsters or left alone in a world where everything seems to want to kill them? I mean honestly, even Naruto was like that in his better days!
I mean come on, for every Yaoi Art of Naruto or other stuff out there you could just cry out loud "child porn".
And I am a hentai fan, that says a lot.Okay, back to this serie: So, we have a 12 year old Gary Stu that bet some of Americas champions four times in a row and mocks everybody.
... I think such characters deserve to be Shonen Ai victims. Sorry, but I have a zero tolerance limit against Gary Stus. What I can`t understand about it, how they really could make up tennis so overdramatic. I mean really, who ever heard of such "technics"?
Yeah, professional plyers perhaps have some sort of "tricks" but heck, it is tennis. two people hitting balls over a net. there isn`t much you can prepare yourself for. Sure you can train, but not even that will make you a champion in a long run.
The age of the characters is at last sdomething I can understand. Boris Becker and Steffi Graf, two world famous german tennis players were in their teen years, s they first won Wimbledon and other great tennis matches. But a 8 year old winning against... oh fuck it, I don`t say it anymore.
Also, when he won so often, why now playing in some school against other "starters" based on his niveau? what is this, some kind of insult against other nations with the words "we play better tennis then you can!".
Well, nice review again about a manga that perhaps had some "good" instances and idea, but because he doesn`t give many characters development ended up as the shonen manga equivalent (what an insult) of Eragon for tennis/Bishi obsessed fangirls. I really hope, that you will come up with some "good" mang in the future because to be honest, I slowly become tired of only "criticizing" videos about comics, movies, games etc. heck, isn`t there at last one good thing someone likes?
-
04.17.2009 - 00:56 | C2B - re: Shonen series and the rules...
@Bonkers
Serveral points.
1. You never really take a look at this series. You never even heard what drama means and you absolutly not show any interest in character developement whatsoever? Am I right?
(Because they all fuck up your fma in this terms (exept Beyblade) and you shouldn't think you have any right to talk about yu-gi-oh if you didn't read the original manga and actually understand what's about)(FMA rocks at parts though)2.
The drawing of POT is one of the greatest art styles in shounen history. No, no joke. Not only my opinion but you can ask in any manga dediacted board)3.
Yeah, yeah those clichees you name doesn't exist in any western stories oh no............ Wait just in every movie. And to act like this isn't really overblown for a 15 year old. Especially people with a strong dediaction TO sports are usually a very serioes type when it comes to sport and work. As long as it is not evening then the beer comes.
4.
"And I am a hentai fan, that says a lot."So,........ what exactly says that. Name me one hentai you can proof you're theory with.
5. And yaoi doesn't mean child porn. It's the homosexuall type. And it's usually more used in seinen
6.
You will never understand if you don't like the sport. So, don't read it it's not for you.
7.There are 7year olds who are doing one hole in one after another and beating the shit out of proffessional golf player's so.....
8.
So you're saying that f.E FMA isn't overblown. So? Since when do 12 year old's overlive explosions. Show the strength of 30 year old's or are acting like total morons (a *mangaclichee*) in certain situations.8.
I AM A MAN! *croachpunch*
No, seriously. The manga has a large man fanbase. And no they are not gay.
Man, are you guy TRYING to find faults?

-
04.17.2009 - 02:09 | Bonkers
Well, just to answer it:
I read Yugioh. I even would say the manga is good,
compared to the anime where it really was overloaded, especially during this god
damn filler arcs. God damn it, who was the greater Stu? Dartz or Yami?
I even
liked the manga during the first volumes, but after this thing only concentrated
on the card game it became boring. I was really happy as they finally brought
this egyptian story arc, as it did at last bring real backstory to the
characters. And characterdevelopment in Yugioh? I mean yeah, there were some
characters that developed, but I know other series with greater development than
this. Also I am not making fun about characterdevelopment, I make fun about the
fact that everything can be made into a manga. I mean I support it if someone
uses his imagination, but do I have to "support" every manga series just
because it has some good art and so on? The artwork of FMA isn`t so great in its
early volumes and still the storytelling is better than in most shonen series
out there.Okay, POT has a great art. Well, Dragon Ball had also some great
backround art in the later chapters, Naruto is a hell of "details", the
mang version of NGE is just great for me and so on. A great artwork doesn`t make
automatically a great serie, if the story isn`t so good. That the clichees are
everywhere to find is something I have to admit, but anime seems to support it
sometimes more often than other shows.
.. Okay this isn`t true, sorry. Still you
can allow me to be a fan of f.E Digimon but still question the fact, that they
are only ten, or?
I mean yeah, the age is there so that the target audience can
identify with the characters but sometimes it is just joke or isn`t it?To
Yaoi: That was more based on the 16 year old characters, our "hero"
would be considered shota, I know.
But do you really think I wanted to name
this... crap by its term?
To the hentai thing... okay not even I know anymore
what I wanted to say about it. Let`s just say I saw stuff based on POT thanks to
hentai that just killed parts of the last childish innocent I contained in my
soul.Okay I don`t like tennis and if someone plays it, it is okay for me. Stil
the "devoted way" of how it is brought up in the manga is in some
instances weird. And yeah I know there is a lot of passion in sport but I prefer
the real thing rather than a manga/comic about it.That mangas always tend to
"overblow" themself is clear. FMA, Naruto and the way Konoha was blown
up, Bleach, Dragon Ball, Chrono Crusade, Death Note, we can continue this list
until next week. Stil I consider FMA more in the fantasy genre and this genre
has the right to overblow things as long as it remains in some "limits".
You know limits like "one single Jutzu shouldn`t be able to destroy
everything in a radius of ten kilometre or something.
But POT is sport and even
if you can make some good ideas of it, I can`t understand why this genre in
general goes on so long. I mean sport is cool, I am a soccer fan and I even read
therefore some volumes of Captain Tsubasa. But after some time I prefer the real
thing than the manga. Especially if the characters slowly transform into Gary
Stus.Oh and by the way, I know enough about drama. Beside thinks happening in
real life, I read Adolf, Monster and this other manga about the boy and his
mother surviving the destruction of Hiroshima. (I don`t know the title in
english, because in germany we only got it under the title "Barfuss durch
Hiroshima" I read some mangas and I also read some chapters of POT long
before the review thanks to onemanga.com.
So don`t say I wouldn`t know
anything.
But sometimes even a "devoted Otaku" starts to make fun of
mangas even those he likes, especially in our "modern time" where they
slowly begin to overflow the entertainment market and everyone seems to think
"it hs a cute Bishi, so it must be good"Therefore I thank the gods for
Read Right to left, s that it not only informs "non Otakus" about
mangas, but also manages to make fun of the good and the bd series by showing
their flaws and the "clichees" they are build up on.
I don`t consider
clichees a bad thing if they are used properly, but to make fun of them is just
great.

04.19.2009 - 07:50 | adrasl300
I thought Shonen was known for fan service! "eye candy" as you called it.
And I kinda like child heros since I just recently kinda "grew up".
-
04.20.2009 - 20:03 | Bonkers
Yeah, but sometimes "eye candy" can just be... I don`t really think that some mangakas initially wanted that later people come up with "shonen ai interpretation" in their series. Okay, at this POT series I think so, but... ever see any sign of shonen Ai in OPne Piece? No?
Why the hell there are then hundreds of fangirls coming up with stories to it. If you like Shonen Ai and write it as fanfiction okay, but I prefer Shonen Ai that is somehow "logical explained"
And children as heros... hey, I dont have anything against it at all. Heck, I loved Digimon and there the heroes are always kids. But sometimes you come to the conclusion, that some of them also should act at last in a few scenes more again like "children" would in such a situation. I mean come on, how many mecha animes are out there, where the pilots are only children. Heck, I was glad as someone came up with NGE, because Shinji is -beside a case for a psychiatrist- a good example how any real person would react if you say to it "hey, you have to save the world from a few great monsters, that are going to kill you, good luck!"
-
04.17.2009 - 01:16 | Locura - Nice ^_^
That was a nice joke, 'bout the way Light ate his potatoe chips, in Death Note ^__^
The rest was fine, too.
-
04.17.2009 - 01:45 | SirSick - O yeah!
Now this is what I was talking about.
A short into into the shonen genre/target demographic and explaining a few things found within them.
And then, showing us how much this series fails. Even your arguments are less personal as you can stave more proof screens to prove them.
To me personally, having a protagonist with little to no growth or one that can not teach good lessons to the readers is an autofail.
Good review. Again way better than the previous, once you get this stlye down ... Glory awaits :p
-
04.17.2009 - 03:27 | reb92287 - such a bad manga
Seriously....I tried to read past chapter 10 and I just couldn't do it. The fact that you actually managed to read the whole series shows you deserve a freaking medal. It was poorly written, had a flawless antagonist, much like the Mary Sue character in the Resident Evil movies. It had its moments with some of the other characters but I just got tired of the fact that the main character cannot fail, no matter what he won't change or fail at all.
-
04.17.2009 - 03:43 | BatOtaku13
i used to play tennis in high school, and i like shonen manga in general, but even i really disliked this series. you're totally right about ryoma being gary stu. where's the dramatic tension if he's so perfect at everything he does?
-
04.17.2009 - 05:51 | ninjalizchan
I personally had never watched or read Prince of Tennis, and I had never planned to because it frankly looked boring despite all the rather hot looking men in it. Now I'm possitive that I will never read it. Very entertaining, keep it up.
-

You now, I have never understood Prince of Tennis. Its so much made for girls instead of boys.

-
04.19.2009 - 09:59 | ElementalHero
I guess, that means you haven't seen Slam Dunk that doesn't have all that craziness.
-
04.17.2009 - 06:59 | metroidgearsolid - strange isnt it
strange how prince of tennis is one of the most popular shonen jump mangas yet is only kept alive by the screaming fangirls. thats it! i am never using a single prince of tennis character again in jump superstars! but still i love shonen jump (apart from prince of tennis) and like most of the stuff that they do (bleach, dragonball, one piece, D. gray man, death note etc)

Good review! I remember being pissed over the number of people who just put on tennis uniforms at anime conventions to claim they were cosplaying this trash!
BTW, have you ever seen "History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi?" It manages to strongly develop even the MINOR characters quite well! Might make a good review, eh?
-
04.17.2009 - 09:15 | Lone Flame
My god Prince of Tennis is crap. I never got very far into it(cause I wasn't impressed with it), but I had no idea how bad it really was. How this hell is that piece of trash ranked higher than better graphic novels, such as Negima and Dragon Ball!?!
No one likes the guy who's just inherently good and never fails. In a story, we wants to see character who get grow and develop. Even the main character has to fail sometimes. And that's good.
Anywayz. People with near flawless skill should never be the main character to a series. Those should always be some kind of rival or mentor.
EDIT: I second the goodness of History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. It's a remake, but a good one. It has more characters, more growth, better pacing, more humpr, and more interesting action scene than the original(there was a scene where two people were actually fighting on top a fence).
The guy who made Prince of Tennis could learn something from that(or Hajime No Ippo, or any other series that is a good).
-
04.17.2009 - 09:59 | Bryguy87 - sorry
i can't hear anything, your voice is too muffled, can you remake it?
-
04.17.2009 - 11:27 | Arieschica
I never liked sports manga and many people told me this was actually a good one. Of course when I saw the anime on tv I thought it was so ridiculous. I hate the fact that there are SO many pretty boys in there but none to me have redeeming qualities. Just goes to show a shitty manga can considered great as long as there is eye candy... even if they have the personality of sandpaper.
Also, a small critique is the sound quality. I had to turn up my volume really high to read... and then when you yelled it boomed. Try talking louder or making the sound better. Otherwise I like it.
-
04.17.2009 - 11:32 | Carbacs
AMEN!!!!!!
you are right, i fucking hate this series cause of rioma, i mean there is a pount on which a flawless character is likeable but rioma goes way beyond that for his petulant actitud.
other than that i like most of the characters exept for the obviously gay couple that never sems to go out. i mean seriously people from omikron persey 8 can see that u are gay
-
04.17.2009 - 12:50 | ElementalHero - Good Review
I guess this a perfect example of making your protagonist overhog the spotlight.
By the way, if you're looking for a decent Tennis manga/anime with more well developed characters than Prince Of Tennis, maybe you should try the 70's Shojou title Ace Wo Nerae (Aim For The Ace), it was adapted into several anime adaptations and a 2004 live action Drama.
-
04.17.2009 - 13:05 | infophreak
As if the manga was bad, just wait till you see some parts of the anime. Like where Tezuka kills the dinosaurs. There is some serious narm going on in that clip.
