EXTREME!!!! and.... i seen so many characters with that Disease so horible!!! we must stop it once and for all!!!
  • thorondragon
unfortunately some people have mistaken it for the line eye genetic trait found in manga characters. the possessors of the line eye trait simple have very narrow eyes, so narrow they do not seem open unless they need to emote.

Man, hadn't even seen it yet, and all the title could make me think of was Newman from Seinfeld getting cloning powers and freaking the shit out of everyone and everything.

After viewing, I agree. EXTREEEME! But there is something off... oh yeah, purple coming out of heads means psychic powers! Not BEAMS! Head-beams are red or green! This comic fails harder than a fail-boat high on EXTREEEME... (fail)
  • RokuroCarisu  - That actually reminds me of...

In Champions Online, some of the PSI villains and henchmen have a flame-like aura FX on their forehead that somehow resembles Reign's. It even is pink. ALL powers used by PSI members are pink! And their rivals from the New Purple Gang actually comment on that. ^^
  • Toby  - Nice work

Yet again a fine piece of entertainment, thanks for you continuing hard work on your series.

I have to ask what were the songs used in this, especially the EXTREME bg music, I can't quite get it out of my head :D I know that particular version from somewhere and now my head is breaking down 'cause it quite can't connect the dots :P

The "dramatic sad background music" is from an anime, but I'm not sure which. The file is called Laputa, though, if anyone knows anything more.

The extreme background music is from a rendition of Pachelbel's canon... as done with an electric guitar. Canon Rock is what I believe it's referred to as on youtube. AND IT IS AWESOME.

Brotherhood of Man's "United We Stand" made up the credits music and my bit of surprisingly accurate lyp-syncing.

The ironically-titled "Close Your Eyes" from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack made up the music for the ending PSA.

Laputa? Perhaps it refers to Hayao Miyazaki's anime film "Laputa: Castle in the Sky"?

Sadly I'm pretty sure it's been proven that subliminal messages don't actually work. XD Though I think the more than liminal message I made at the end works, too. ^^

Plus the fact that most countries ban the use of subliminal messages on TV...

Great review. Comic that reviewed might not be classic but review could be one.

Seriously, old Robby-boy is a comic critic's dream: a man whose work is so bad that even things
    he "inspired" are comedy gold.

    Excellent work as always, Link!

I was rolling when you were showing us all the Newmans LOL Great work Linkara :)

I honestly considered making an "I AM A NEW MAN!" joke, particularly around the "fight like a man!" part, but I decided that it's best to keep it once a month maximum.

"Because poor literacy is kewl," though, must be spoken anytime someone assumes that replacing letters somehow makes a character cooler. XD
  • NeonLights  - M. Bison just got replaced
Now the Twin Hitler scene should be the new tradition clip :)

Love how far you're going with your work, and I can't wait to see Youngblood =)

"Laputa - Castle in the Sky" is a Ghibli Anime. Haven't watched it for quite some time though, so I can't say for sure that that's where the music is from.

Btw. great review as always. Movie and/or Game reviews are great, but you are the only Comic reviewer I know of (that means: you're the best!), and I love every minute of your reviews.
  • Wartex
Yes, I did pause the video to read your evil subliminal messages. So I'm not falling for them.

Hah, great review as always! I loved the digs at sub-standard literacy and the emphasis on EXTREME!!! moments. Great job!

You know, on the topic of the art style, I remember reading in Understanding Comics while researching an essay that some regarded Rob Liefeld's style as reflective of comic book audiences growing into the "anxieties of adolescence", hence the jagged lines and screwy faces. Whatever, Scott, it still looks flat-out retarded.

It's time to du-du-duel! No wait, it's not. However it is time for... Usless Anime Trivia!
Exciting stuff indeed. As someone else mentioned the titel of the Animé is Laputa Castle in the sky However he didn't know the track, lucky you I do. the track is Rapyuta no Houkai or in english The Collapse of Laputa. Shouldn't be to hard to find.

Wasn't that just a mountain of excitement?

You're just making more work for me over at the wiki aren't you, my friend? So many new running gags from Linkara... =P

I kid, man. Newmen. I think I read about them in Wizard. Not that that's saying much. That magazine is a travesty. At least in my opinion. Anyway, the book just screams bad like you said. Everyone's eyes are like Storm's when they power up. That and they look like they shouldn't be able to move! I'll leave the comic critiquing to you, Link. But, jeez. Draw some EYES!

If eyes are the windows to the soul, what does a lack of eyes mean? No soul? Woah that's deep.

Awww.. I was waiting for the "I AM A -new- MAYUN" thing. I actually said it out loud during the review. But it's good your not over stating it.

Although, to me, it never gets old. LOL!!!

"Laputa - Castle in the Sky"

...and originally the flying island in Gulliver's Travels :)

To be fair, the X-men are the first offenders (maybe; there are too many super hero groups...)

And that was the introductional issue? Why would anyone care about those unlikable bastards? And why is their headquarters in suburbia? Their neighbours must be mighty pissed...

  • themaverickmj  - Why was Leifeld such a major player in comics?
    avatar
I just love how you threw in a few "Buy Revolution of the Mask" messages every time things went "extreme". It's nice to know that you can shamelessly plug your incredibly better than anything Rob Liefeld ever had anything remotely do do with comic and do it in a fun and creative way. Of course, I'm not sure what procedes of the comics will do to cure bad artists who don't draw eyes very well, but at least someone is thinking about the characters' eyes for a change.

I just have a a few really stupid questions here - Who in their right mind thought that Rob Liefeld was such a great artist? He was put on major books, inspired an entire generation of artists to take up his style, and, eventually thought himself big enough to launch his own books that did somewhat well despite how bad they were. How does this happen? Am I to believe that there was so little interest in drawing comics in the late 80's and early 90's that a guy like this could not only get hired, but become a major player in the industry? There had to be other artists, better artists, out there, right? I mean, seriously.

It's pretty bad when I see a panel of a comic I've never seen and know nothing about (for instance, the preview screenshot for this video) and know, without a doubt, that Rob Liefeld was not only involved, but that the comic was absolute garbage.
