Good review. Never really cared much for this PR.

Holy crap! Didn't think I'd see this again.

And, this is slightly less annoying than the sentai where they are all siblings led by their "Magi Mom"... But only slightly.
  • Omnicrom
As a big fan of the original Sentai, Magiranger I have to say many of the show's problems stem from the weird pseudo-adaptation.

For starters in the original all 5 rangers were a family. Thus storylines like Wolzard, Koragg's counterpart, being their father affected all of the rangers. By only keeping that for the Red Ranger in Mystic Force but no one else. There was a really strong theme of family throughout Magiranger.

Similarly the bloated cast comes from adapting the show but not completely. Phineas and the record store guy have no counterpart in Magiranger. Clare's counterpart only shows up very rarely in Magiranger, and Udonna's counterpart was the Rangers' mother in Magiranger and she's out of commission for most of the show. Leelee is probably a counterpart to Nai and Mare, two girls that are actually the alter ego of the Japanese verison of Necrolai. Magiranger had a couple of characters who don't have American equivalents, but since you're still down 4 or 5 characters the focus of the show is much more centralized on the rangers.

I'm glad Linkara liked Chip. A pity they didn't adapt the Yellow Rangers finest moment from Magiranger though. In the American version Oculous was defeat by Nick with the Battlizer, but in Magiranger his counterpart Cyclops was defeated in an excellent one on one duel with the Yellow ranger.

Linkara mentioned the fight scenes being changed because of Disney but I sort of wonder about that. Magiranger was a good story but it had really bad fight scenes with little action all throughout. In fact by the end of the show they'd completely stopped doing fights with the generic footsoldiers at all. There were a couple of standout ones but the Special Effects laden Disney made fights seem almost like a patch to increase the amount of action in the series.

Lastly that pacing. Linkara seems to be completely correct when he points out that Mystic Force didn't seem to have a gameplan. The Jenji episode he highlighted was definitely one that should have been cut, the episode of Magiranger it was adapted from wasn't that great but at least Magiranger had a full 50 episodes to work with. Similarly if the Snow Prince wasn't going to give them the Legend Armor like in Magiranger then he doesn't really serve a point. The finale of Magiranger was much less overstuffed as well, the thing about Nick becoming evil had no counterpart in Magiranger and the short fight with Itassis was cut out completely.

It's really a shame that you don't want to give Super Sentai a try.

You're right: Overdrive sucked. But the source material is widely considered to be one of the best sentais of all time. I'm not telling you this in defense of Overdrive, to try to sway your critique of it (as previously stated, it just plain sucked), but because Boukenger is better in every way imaginable. I actually felt angry when I finally sat down to watch the original, I couldn't believe Disney could take such a great chapter and turn it into what they did. It is the ONLY sentai vs PR comparison where I feel PR had no advantages whatsoever.

I know! I was so happy to see this on the home page. I was wondering when he would put it up, but I didn't mind the wait. I had lots of other things to do in my life so it didn't really matter that much to me.

I'm so glad you hate the theme song to this season Linkara. While I waited for you to put this up I watched/listened all the intros to all the seasons and when I got to Mystic Force I was stunned. I couldn't believe what I heard. The opening was great, but as soon as the lyrics came up and the beat change, I hated it. It was just rap garbage and I'm just not that into rap. I think Jungle Fury's song was alright. It at least sounded like what the title of the series suggests. Though, I think I know which song you would consider the worst is. When I heard RPM's song, seriously, why? Just why?

Also, I noticed you didn't add the sixth ranger from Mega Force into the new History of Power Rangers intro. Or maybe you did and I missed it. Quite possibly you made this before the sixth ranger was revealed.

With regard to the laser sound effects for the fighting, I can honestly say I don't really hear it that much in Mega Force. I'll keep an ear out next time and see if I can spot it.

Speaking of Mega Force, I loved how you mentioned Gosei when the Mystic Rangers morph for the first time. When I watched the first episode of Mega Force, I thought the rangers were in a video game. It just seemed so out of place. I eventually got use to it, but it was jarring the first time through.

Anyway, thanks for the review Linkara. I can't wait to see what you thought of the next season. Perhaps I'll continue my marathon of Power Rangers so I can view what's ahead. :)

On the topic of the switching cast I feel this works because it'd be weird to have the same character constantly switching fighting styles.
  • badgersprite
    avatar
Forgive me if this turns into a long post, but I'd also say that cast switching does allow Power Rangers to focus much more on writing better character arcs and better storylines, at least in theory. Even if some of the later seasons aren't very good, they're at least given the freedom to be more serialised shows with more focus on overarching plots and on character growth.

Like, take Time Force as a good example. There, a major theme of the show was Wes's relationship with his father and his rivalry with Eric, and you also had Jen's personal history with Ransik and her anger towards him motivating her actions, as well as her relationship with Alex changing as she began falling in love with Wes. Starting fresh gives you the opportunity to write those great character arcs and plan them out from the beginning in a way that you just couldn't do if you only imported past protagonists who don't have those kinds of connections or character motivations.

You simply couldn't have had those same great storylines from Time Force happen if, say, the Lightspeed Rangers had become the Time Force Rangers, because they were completely different characters designed for a completely different season. Their characters were already previously established and you couldn't have made those major changes to their personalities to make it so that suddenly some of them did have that same kind of personal connection to the drama. Even with Tommy coming back in Dino Thunder, they were only able to give him a personal connection to the villain because he'd been gone for so long that he basically was a completely new character than the Tommy of Ranger series past.

Similarly, if the Time Force Rangers had gone on to become the Wild Force Rangers, then they probably wouldn't have gotten as much development in their own season because the writers would have had to deliberately leave room for the characters to grow since they wouldn't know what the new season would be, and then when they do enter the new season the characters would either be left to face villains with whom they don't have that personal connection and thus aren't as interesting, or completely new and random things about the Rangers would have to be introduced in a second season in order to create that emotional drama and complexity.

So, yeah, in short, I'd say that while I do completely believe that Power Rangers should embrace continuity as much as possible, the changing casts with each season is actually a strength of the show that allows it to stay fresh, liberates the writers and allows them the freedom to tell better and more complete stories, and it avoids stagnation.
  • PGrunty
I agree with you fully, the change in cast is a good thing for the show, when used properly.

Look at what they did with the first six seasons, when they did keep the member continuity. As Linkara said, all the members were basically a blank slate with no real personality. Billy probably got the most, but only after he retired from combat. Rocky, Adam, and Aisha got... nothing.

To this day, my favorite leader is Andros. I think a big part of that wsa that he wsa the first ranger to have an backstory important to the overall season, and a well defined character arc.
  • shamrocknroll
    avatar
I wholeheartedly agree with you about continuity. As much I would love to see Kat or Karone as the pink ranger again, I know they might get tiring on me. Same with TJ being the blue ranger. A new roster means new watchers are not out of the loop. Heck imagine if Dino Thunder came after say, In Space. Tommy's story would be completely needed for something like that. Something new watchers would be like "am I missing something?"

I have to disagree about your opinion on the theme song. I like the rap version better then the rock version. Also I think both songs don't fit with a power rangers season dealing with magic and such.

It's great to know that you're still doing History of Power Rangers :D

Although I stopped watching Power Rangers after Lightspeed Rescue, it's interesting to get a whole summary set of all the seasons of Power Rangers afterward. At most I just took little brief looks at each season if I caught it on tv so I barely got any idea of what was going on.

Also...wow. The last installment came out a whole year ago?! XD It felt like a shorter time than that to me. Oh well, as long as we see more at some point in time.

magi ranger is heavily based around god and religion, eh?
  • Gborr
    avatar
Errr... No, I don't think so. Did you actually watch the review? There was no god OR religion in the series, just a bunch of hot air about belief and whatnot, which is (for better or worse) is not only religion's hat. People believe in a lot of things, from conspiracy theories, and astrology to wonder diets and bigfoot. The average homo sapiens is kind of dumb that way...
  • KouTheMad
    avatar
Hot air? is that what you thought?
  • Falconfly

He was talking about Magiranger, which I think was more "religiously oriented" (read: Evangelion style pseudo-abrahamic thingies for the lolz), what with the bad guys being demons and the good guys basically theurgists.

Hey Linkara, why do you think in the Power Rangers universe no one ever started selling power rangers hats, t-shirts, and junk?
  • Gborr
    avatar
    Silly question.
Because of copyright claims, obviously. :P
I mean, think about it: our copyright laws are completely lopsided and nonsensical already, think about how harsh they would be if the copyright claimant had access to zords. :P
  • PGrunty
You really don't see that sort of thing in any super hero universe (except that awful Wonder Woman series that Linkara helped rip apart)
  • BlueStarReturns  - I honestly was worried... Great to see this!
    avatar
Will be watching the review shortly, but I just wanted to say that I've really liked this series. I've even re-watched it a few times just to keep everything you said fresh in case it came back in later episodes.

Why I was worried is because of the impatient-fan thing you had brought up in Wild Force. Due to it being so long since SPD, I was worried that people started pestering you again. It's good to see my worry was needless.

Keep up the great work, Lewis!

I know that the idea that believing something and knowing something are mutually exclusive is relatively common, but I still do not think that it holds up under scrutiny. There are valid definitions of knowledge that include belief, such as Robert Nozick's conception of knowledge as a type of belief that the believer would not hold if it were not true, because they arrived at that belief via a method that always produces true beliefs in those who apply that method. I am paraphrasing of course, the full definition can be found here

    (http://en.wikipedia.org wiki/ Robert_Nozick#Epistemolog y).
  • brick mooncode
    avatar
It would be a nice story element though. Maybe the "belief in magic" could translate to a belief in the worthiness of magic rather than seeing magic as just a means to an end, or alternatively, seeing it as something that the world would have been better off without; and maybe the powers could still work without the belief, but in an undesirable way.

It made my day to see a new HOPR episode!

I love the new introduction with its focus on all the different teams morphing and the footage from Ranger team ups. I got a really strong sense of Ranger unity from the intro. If that's what you were going for, you definitely accomplished it!

Speaking of Ranger team ups, it's a damn shame this series didn't have one. I mean, as you pointed out, this season already had enough problems with extraneous episodes and storylines that didn't really accomplish anything, but, I really liked the SPD Rangers, and having them interact with the Mystic Force Rangers could have been a brilliant opportunity for developing the characters of the Mystic Force Rangers by having them sit down and talk with the SPD Rangers. They could have paralleled the journeys and growth that the SPD Rangers underwent with the Mystic Force Rangers and have them learn things from each other. Would have been cool.
  • zebx  - Srg. Silverback
Anyone else notice that that one warrior they were fighting looked a lot like srg. silver back from SPD.Hooray for cameos
  • PZilla
I am watching these vids as a complete novice to anything PR related post "In Space".

That is important for me to make this point.

So wait, this hip hop song IS NOT the worst theme? Whoa. That's scary. I can't wait to see which one is when you get to it.

how bad is "Operation Overdrive" is worse then "Turbo" because I know how much Linkara hated "Turbo"
  • TheBlitzkrieg
    avatar
To the Ranger fandom, it is infamous and even downright scary. It is held in so low regard the only reason people bag on Samurai more is the fact it's a COMPLETE adaptation of their butt-humping love of its sentai counterpart. Which I still don't see why as THAT series was bad as well. But I digress.
  • DestinyDecade
I hated Operation Overdrive and there were a lot of reasons why I do.
  • Mousy Voice
    avatar
Operation Over Drive is worse than Power Rangers Turbo? I don't know whether or not to feel afraid or excited to see the next episode. In any case, this is a pretty good review as always. It has been a long time coming, and I do hope that you will manage to finish History of Power Rangers in the near future.
  • KouTheMad
    avatar
excited as that means Linkara will tear the shit out of it.
  • veeve
I thought Overdrive was pretty good. Most episodes actually had a reason for existing instead of just being filler episodes. And it was cool seeing so many different villains against the rangers.
  • Cetadrius

Another car based season? This cannot end well.
Anyway, great review Linkara, even if it did take a year to make. Seriously looking forward to the next one. Also, couldn't help but notice that Lupa and NC both brought up this show recently while doing appearances in atop the fourth wall, build up or just coincidence?
  • Vinny1138
    avatar
Overdrive is actually based around Treasure/Scavanger hunting and Adventure theme.
  • PGrunty
The sentai name is Boukenger, where "bouken" means adventure. It is almost like a power ranger version of Indiana Jones, if that makes any sense.

So the zords are basically exploration vehicles. Not quite as bad as race cars, but they were extemely boring over all. At least Turbo had the Rescue Zord with that awesome finishing move.
  • veeve
It is car based, but unlike Turbo, it is a billionaire building machines, what else would he make? It's not much different than Lightspeed or SPD in that respect so I doubt he will bash it for that.
  • Pinky
    avatar
Que people asking when next part is coming out.
  • PGrunty
I think the next one will come out faster. By what he said in Wildforce, he's already watched Operation Overdrive and needs to watch Jungle Fury before the next one. JF is much less painful than OO.
  • Vercalos  - Huzzah! Linkara's doing the HoPR again!
I have enjoyed every episode of this, despite having only watched the seasons before Power Rangers in Space. And I like listening to Linkara snark, I just don't watch move of his videos because the subject matter(comic books) doesn't draw my attention the same way.
  • Raymond  - Something I liked

They finally bucked the trend of having all the female rangers be at least kind of hot.
  • uneek
    Dude, speak for yourself
  • kradrol
I have to disagree. while vita didn't really strike me as "hot" I thought madison filled the real nicely. it's more of an innocent "girl next girl" attractiveness rather then what we have gotten in the past; which is to say the "hot" ranger just wears no clothes. (kimberly, tori, maya, etc)
  • veeve
    I really liked Madison
  • walrusclown
Anyone else hear "Here come the power wangers" When they're saying "Hear come the power rangers"

Yeah, this one was very flawed, although it had some good points. The biggest problem was that it suffered so much from the Red Ranger problem, focusing almost exclusively on Nick while ignoring the other Rangers; and while PR often does that, Mystic Force was probably the most egregious example. So basically, I agree with Linkara here. Did like the Zords, and the novelty of having the rangers actually become them, though.

The Kalish years, overall, were not that good; personally I thought Jungle Fury was the best of them, though that may be mostly because it had the best theme song of the group, one with a similar tone to the earlier PR themes, and that ranks up there with the best. They used it for the fight scenes too.

Oh, Operation Overdrive, not that was bad. I liked some of the setup; the idea that, instead of one group of villains, the Rangers were fighting several, who were also fighting against each other, is a really good one, in theory. And it was something the show had only done briefly once before, towards the end of Zeo after Rita and Zedd returned. Sure, there was infighting and betrayals among other seasons' villains, but not separate groups working at cross purposes. But the execution was just awful. And the ending was just bad, and undermined the whole series' plot, but to get into why would be all spoilery.
  • Tactlesscat
    avatar
Yeah Mystic Force really had an issue with the red ranger focus. Which I think is partially to blame with trying to incorporate the Sentai plot, like with Wolf Warrior and the White Ranger being his parents...but they didn't go the whole way with it of having all of the base team be his siblings, like in Magiranger, and thus give a reason to let them have some attention. Sure that's a bad reason but a lot of Magiranger's development and interactions with their teammates kind of focused heavily on the family aspect.

I have never seen anything other than the original MMPR (I'm 28 and not mentally retarded why the fuck would I have??)and have not watched any of the "history of power rangers" videos, but I want these to continue because I'm pretty sure he hates doing them and causing Linkara pain is hilarious.
  • uneek
Wow. Pretty much everything in that comment makes me hate you
  • TheBlitzkrieg  - If he's still doing them...
    avatar
How would these be exactly "painful?" You DO know if he wanted to stop them, he'dve just said so and not gone out of his way for his fans do make them...He's also a member of the Power Force officially sanctioned by Power Rangers and Saban because of his love for the show.

And frankly, you REALLY should watch when he did all the other seasons and notes his favourites to be In Space, with Galaxy, Time Force, and Dino Thunder being other notable mentions.

But on the other note I get a good feeling OO will appear quickly IF only for the sake he gets to go on a rampage in it just like we ALL did :D. This, is gonna be fun.

If you haven't watched any of the HoPR episodes, why would you think he hates doing them? And you obviously have never watched anything of Linkara's, otherwise you'd realize that he loves Power Rangers. And you obviously haven't watched even part 1 of his, because he specifically says "as a Power Rangers fan."

First off love the review and this explains why the hunt for Mystic force actively, as far overdrive, if only Adam got to say where his dojo was located that, seriously all they have to do is just say"I can't wait to get back to silent Hill." Then the series would actually be decent.
As for Mystic force it suffers the problems that I think comes from zero set up. even SPD actually established ones of information!
