I like this review, but I have to say, I can't wait for the Dino-Thunder review. And I can't till you get to Operation Overdrive.
When I was a kid I didn't like the Ninja Storm villains & that wierd orchestra songs that they allways play over & over. When I watched Mighty Morphing, & I liked Lord Zed, because of how much of a great villain he is. But THESE villains are incredibly lame!

you forgot to mention that Lothor actualy had a comedic side. one time he broke the forth wall after launching a scroll of empowerment he looked into the camera and said "well what did you expect, he wasent going to get smaller", then when he was driving that giant robot that distroyed the thunderstorm megazord he said whail driving it "this is the most fun ive had all season"
also, you should do a review of kamen rider dragon knight, vr troopers, beetle borgs, superhuman samurai syber squad and Masked rider.

First episode and I'm head-desking.
Girl: "LOL Power Rangers?! How could something like that exist? Now c'mon, we have to get back to our color-coded ninja school, guyz!"
Also: "We need to save money. Quick, make every-****ing-thing CG, now!"
(And Lothor's nieces are clearly the Magus Sisters from FFX. This much is clear. The mantis and the bumblebee, at least. And once again we see the best way of staying alive in the end if you're a Power Rangers villain: Be a pretty girl. Works every time.)
-
The first being simple, I am trying to find said video of the epic battle with all the other ranger teams (or Super Sentai teams) combine together for the battle in Goukaiger, but I'm not sure what to look for on Youtube, can you give me a hint on what to search? also the second is also a suggestion on another retrospective series, why not try one for Transformers there have been a number of series since it started in 1984, and I would enjoy to hear your thoughts on them, or do you think that Doug would get on you for covering the transformers like he did the Nostalgia Chick with her transformers review?

what about Pokemon?
........no really, it'd be hilarious to hear what you have to say about that.
it would be BRUTAL!
or you could just do a REALLY long anime (technically Pokemon does fall in this role) and review the individual arcs. (One Piece for example has many, do to being very long, ongoing with no end in sight).
but that might be a bit difficult compared to Power Rangers, since, with the exception of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, every season has different ranger powers and villains and so many differences.
it'd be difficult to find another show where each season is different in multiple ways.
Dr. Who is technically one, but you already said no, and finding another show that has differences in nearly every way in each season is not easy.

read the first comment and this came to mind. what about a retrospective on such shows like Beetleborgs, VR Troopers, or Mystic Knights of Mir Na Nog? that last one was actually Saban trying to make an original series that wasn't based on Japanese tokusastu and from what i remember it was fairly decent.
-
03.24.2011 - 04:32 | PLAAh, Mystic Knights! I watched that one, though I don't remember a lot. As far as dialogue is concerned, I only vaguely remember one line. "Five against two? That's not fair. To you."

Great job Linkara, I always enjoy these and now that I have more ram the videos don't freeze forcing me to go back and usually trapping me in a repetitive loop for a good while. That said, it might just be me but sound and video seem to just stop in the last minute of the second part.
Also I have to thank you. You're part of the reason I took sometime out to watch Kamen Rider(the other part being Vangelus's review of the Kamen Rider Skull figurine.) Kamen Rider because I had been putting it off and I had a place to find it.
-
Yay, another Power Rangers history lesson! Very awesome review, loving the series thus far. Is Samurai really that good? Short one cable connection, so I have yet to be able to watch. Thank you for the awesome series thus far, Linkara.

If you ever start to doubt your abilities as a documentarian Linkara, just look at this post; I never watched Power Rangers beyond the Green Ranger saga (which was in Season freaking 1). Despite that, I have watched every single episode of HOPR. It takes skill to get that much interest from someone with no real emotional attachment to the subject matter.

Man Linkara you really know how to suck us in from the get go with that super belly slide attack. I'm really interested in what you have to say about this season now.
Oh also a little clarification on the New Zealand ban. It wasn't banned per say it was basically frowned off the TV with it being dropped from the TV networks after the BSA decided it was too violent for children. It actually screened for at least a season as I remember watching the whole green ranger saga as a kid. Twas a Shame I really enjoyed it.

I swear Lothor is an evil version of Strongbad. This season never made much of an impression on me, but I did like the episode Eye of the Storm. It was blatant filler, but I like it when a Ranger reveals their identity to their family, even if it's accidentally. These are supposed to be teenagers, they don't think it might be a good idea to let their parents know that they fight giant monsters and that some day they might not come home?

Ahhh, it's always good to see another episode of HOPR. This is one of the seasons I know best because I was practically forced to watch it by a younger relative of mine. I, similar to you, thought it was an alright series with an overemphasis on silliness in many respects. I also liked Cam the most and thought the Green Ranger here was pretty cool.
As always, you did a good job going over the season and making it interesting to listen to and watch. I'm also glad you commented on the episode with Shane's brother, because I was rather fond of that episode in and of itself.
Of all the series in your retrospective since In Space, Dino Thunder is the one I'm most interested in your opinion on, for obvious reasons. I'm sure you were happy to see who showed up. I think that, with that little bonus, Dino Thunder on the whole was alright and, at the very least, the villains were better than this season.
Keep up the good work Linkara.

Eeew Ninja Storm. That was pretty much the final Power Rangers I ever watched. I saw a bit of the ones after like when they were all Harry Potter knock-offs but Ninja Storm was like a bullet in my heart. It said to me there was no more hope for Power Rangers to ever regain their former glory and the franchise is better off dead so that we may remember them only for the good.
-
03.24.2011 - 03:17 | trlkly
Actually, Mystic Force is what turned me off. I didn't notice the Harry Potter knock-off, but that was probably the problem. Making the Rangers completely magic didn't work for me. I only later saw parts of the series and was able to enjoy it for what it was.
My favorite new series is actually SPD, and going from that to a premise I didn't like just meant I stopped watching, not being willing to give the show a chance. The magic gave it an interesting way to go with the villains, at least.
-
Mostly what killed it for me was a combination of the goofy-ness that Linkara mentions and the repetitive-ness. Ninj Storm, Dino Thunder, etc. . . They all became the same: Rangers have a real-life dilemma, they fight a monster, monsters comes back super-powered, they win, somehow the fight provides the solution to the life problem. The plots of each season are short so they make up for it with slap-stick comedy and boring filler.
Linkara just showed the highlights and significant scenes in his videos but to me, watching the series was like pulling teeth.

I was really looking forward to this one because this is the first of the new seasons that I watched, I only watched to the second season of MMPR for some reason, and, since I'd heard about the MMPR3 being the last season, I assumed it was over. I was pleasantly surprised.
I think the comedic tone worked for me, as it helped me get back in. It was reminiscent of Bulk and Skull, the best part of the first series. Due to the comedy, I didn't realize the ridiculousness of the plot. I wasn't so luck in the next season, and it took a while for it to grow on me. Luckily, there was one person and a lot of backstory to keep me going until I actually started liking it.

Oh, one more thing: I was surprised you didn't mention that this is the first and only time that no female ranger was pink or yellow. In fact, it has only the second male yellow ranger, and the first that was human. This also makes it the second and last to have only one female on the cast.
I was actually surprised they kept going back to yellow, as light blue makes more sense if they have to keep persistent female colors. I guess tradition just wins out.

03.24.2011 - 04:27 | PLAI like villains who act humorous and likeable but can be stone cold evil when you least expect it. Lothor was more of an undisciplined asshat.
The pressuring father being supportive of his son getting a high-profile job as a Power Ranger makes sense.

No matter what else is said or done, the series just doesn't get bigger than Ninja Guitars.

I'm glad to see your finally continuing this...wow the opening scene is hammy LOL
Typical Power Rangers, but you gotta love it anyways.
They should do a new power rangers, target at a teenage demographic, and try to make it less cheesy..I think it'd do really well, and even excite people who've outgrown the old power rangers.
Oh and Green Samurai Ranger FTW

Yeah, from the looks of it, Hurricanger's plot was almost identical to this series, but it was simply handled better. And when there was a deviation in plot, the Hurricanger version was more interesting and made more sense, for example, the motivations of the Lightning Rangers or their equivalent. Rather than being lied to by the big bad, they were brainwashed by their father, and it was interesting to see them develop away from that. The Green Ranger was also handled a little better in the sentai, I think...

The idea of the power rangers only existing in comics during Ninja Storm could be explained. If a large amount of time had gone by since Wild Force it's possible they would have split apart to cover different areas of the world; eventaully starting schools which would turn into the ninja academies, with the legend of Power Rangers fading into stories portrayed in book, comics and television like some sort of myth.
Though this is all an assumption which I'm sure others could find holes with, but anyway great job Linkara looking forward to your next review and the next part of this retrospective.

-
03.24.2011 - 17:31 | BagOfMagicFoodYeah, and there were series like SPD that were explicitly set in a "near future" time, so if the other series were also in the future, you would expect the settings to look more similar.
-
Sometimes said mentions of the year and being a year apart can also help with said case of the Power Rangers's legend fading into stories such as books and the like, but some of said schools (or in this case the Ninja Academies) can adopt the legend and possibly train a new group of rangers. And also since you mentioned in one of the last History of Power Rangers episodes that you don't mind some of us telling you which episodes are filler and which are not, for you episode on Dino Thunder which as you mentioned in this video is the next up, one of the episodes that I think was near the end is technically filler but is filler done well, If I recall correctly the episode is called "Lost in Translation" where the three main dino rangers start watching TV and come across a TV show that features power rangers that have the Dino Thunder costumes but is just hilarous to watch definitely check it out and I hope you cover it in the Dino Thunder review. Looking foward to the next one.

Maybe people in New Zealand just don't believe all the stuff that's supposedly happening in America. They think it's all a coverup or something.
Or maybe these three kids, being raised in a secret dojo, were isolated from the rest of the world and just assumed it was fake.
We can make this work, people!
-
03.24.2011 - 05:48 | hmmmI must admit this definitely wasn't one of my favorite series. The characters were irritating to me and took a long while to get any sort of emotional connection to.
However i started with the mindset of see what it's like in the first few episodes and then carry on if it's worth watching. Which ultimately i did.
The Sensai being a Guinea Pig and Lothor wearing his mask was clearly just a plot device to make it so that kids wouldn't realise it was the same actor playing both parts, which would then add impact to the revelation that they were brothers. Unfortunately i noticed from episode 1...
All in all good review Linkara

03.24.2011 - 07:15 | SaitoBatchI enjoy your retrospectives a lot so I'm glad I saw your opinions on Ninja Storm, but I disagreeed about the wierdness of running on water and throwing off clothes to have more stuff under them. To me those seem like staples of fantasy ninjitsu. It was in Ninja Gaiden and, ok yes Naruto, but since it's Power Rangers it feels like it should fit.
-
03.24.2011 - 07:25 | ShMikeLothor would have fit in a season about Luchador based Power Rangers. Hell, some of the morphed ninja storm elements would have fit in (i.e. Green's Guitar, Blue's Loudspeaker, etc.)
I'm so glad it's here.
Out of curiousity Lewis, do you think you'd be interested in doing this sort of retrospective kind of review once you're finished with Power Rangers? Say with perhaps, Doctor Who or something else that's had a lot of impact on you?
