I never watched a single episode of Zeo, nor of Turbo, I watched a few episodes of Space, and several episodes of all three seasons of Mighty Morphin. Starting with Lost Galaxy, I've watched every Power Rangers episode up until halfway through Wild Force, when I stopped watching it altogether and just lost interest. Thanks for starting this retrospective series so I can catch up on this cultural phenomenon.

07.18.2010 - 17:29 | jagarcia0705I lost interest in Power Rangers after they went into outer space. But after seeing A History of Power Rangers, I became interested in Power Rangers again. It really brings back memories of the good old days. Power Rangers is to the 90's as Transformers was to the 80's. Ironically Linkara became interested in Power Rangers after he reviewed a comic book about the Power Rangers.

05.01.2010 - 21:17 | TalsinI watched a few episodes of Zeo and Turbo, but like most T.V. shows in my childhood, they're pretty fuzzy. Thanks for these refreshers.
I'm sad enough to say that i even saw a few episodes of "wild force" but that's mainly because of morbid curiosity.

05.01.2010 - 21:28 | RoivasThanks again Linkara. You make history come to life (figuratively).
-
05.01.2010 - 23:50 | RoivasEven more impressive that he managed to do that on a Mac for what was obviously a PC. Never mind the impressive feat of the Mac not crashing.

05.01.2010 - 21:47 | YataI'm a little disappointed that you couldn't get "Mati" to say something about Heart sucking and is for pussies, but it really wasn't needed.

05.03.2010 - 00:20 | fantasyleaderActually, Carranger didn't save the franchise from anything. It was just another sentai season in Japan. Just as much as Zyuranger, Dairanger, Kakuranger, and Ohranger before it, and Megaranger after it. Perhaps the best thing Carranger did to the franchise was that it stopped the non-stop Jetman craze, and letting the other seasons be recognized more. Which is why today, Zyu, Dai, Kaku, and Oh are praised much more than before.
And this was a nice review.

05.01.2010 - 21:56 | Dundore77The problem in the beginning was they were using macs... anyway i loved this series and this brought back alot of memories.

I was so hacked off about that Tommy-Kim breakup, too. It's like you were taking words out of my own mouth. Think about this - when Evil Kat made her first appearance last season, it looks like she might try to take Tommy away from Kim... and in the end, she essentially does!
Looking forward to the Turbo review; if you do it too well, I may have to pull it from my list of possible reviews on my TV Trash show.

05.01.2010 - 22:42 | ChaosShadowAh, this is where I stopped watching Power Rangers. I think I saw about half of Zeo, and I'm absolutely certain that when they announced Turbo and showed footage of it for commercials, I just said "No" and found something else to watch.
I do very much recall that my cousin had the Zord toys, the humanoid ones, and they just weren't as fun to play with (the animal Zords had all sorts of little things you could do with them, but the Zeo Zords were basically just regular action figures that could click onto each other). I had no idea they were actually Power Rangers Zords; how much I learn!
As ever, your commentary on the season is top-notch, sir. We're getting into stuff that my nostalgia doesn't cover now, and I'm interested in seeing the evolution of the series hereon out. Particularly Bulk and Skull; they're getting some interesting character arcs and I'd like to see what I missed with them.
Looking forward to more, Linkara! Keep it up!

05.01.2010 - 23:10 | SeraphemGreat as usual Linkara, again this series is just awesome and can't wait for the rest.
Zeo is were I stopped watching so much, not so much due to lack of interest, but just lack of T.V. for a while, managed to catch a few episodes, but it's great to see just what it was I missed, saw the next movie and that was what pretty much killed my interest in Power Rangers, at least till I saw how epic it got In Space.
Since this is one of the first times you've directly mentioned how something in Power Rangers was changed from the Sentai series it got me thinking, it would be great to see some more comparisons between the two, kind of as a side note.
That being said thanks so much for doing this series, it really is amazing, looking forward to the next episode a lot, cause I saw enough of it to know it sucked. Can't wait to see just how bad it really was.

05.01.2010 - 23:11 | Neo Ultra MikeYou know sometime after the movie I kind of drifted out of Power Rangers and never saw Season 3 when it originally premiered (I saw parts of it and Alien Rangers later on but that was probably years later). I did start catching Zeo halfway through though when they were introducing the Gold Ranger, since I remember seeing the episode where Treyu was revealed as the gold ragner (I actually missed the introduction of the Super Zeo Zords and Jason being the gold ranger when it first premiered but was awestruck by Jason coming back and knew that I had to keep watching Zeo). In truth though it didn't have the charms of the original Zeo was pretty good. The Battlizer was awesome, the Machina Empire being a real family of evil was kind of different then what we got from Rita and Zed (Funny enough Queen Machina's voice was done by Alex Borestien, aka Lois on Family Guy. I really wonder why FG never did a power rangers joke based alone on that fact), and there were some interesting filler eps. (As well as "Another Song And Dance" there was another interesting one after the "King For A Day" two parter where the day keeps repeating over and over and only Tommy notices it at first). A few things on your review I'd want to comment on.
- Okay I do admitt that I only realized years later that Aisha had been replaced by Tanya (I missed alien rangers and honestly, there didn't seem to be any difference between the two) but I find it odd that you didn't mention Tanya's character at all. Then again she probably didn't do anything different compared to Aeisha but still seems like something missing. Then again there wasn't any real ranger worth focusing on too much in Zeo. Even though Power Rangers Turbo wasn't that good, at least the new Blue Ranger Justin was an actual character, something we haven't really gotten since Tommy.
- You know though Bulk and Skull were douches to Goldar and Rito when they had amensia, I never really saw it as a bad character moment. First off even if Bulk and Skull were developing they still weren't pure heroes (which made them more intersting then the rangers). And hey after being tormented for years by monsters, I consider it a nice payback that they got to boss the two around for awhile. Also I remember before Rito and Goldar's memories came back they were looking for they're parents and asked the two to search for them. And though they could only pay Bulk and Skull in garbage, the two still agreed to take the case, so it's not like they were total jerks to them.
- There were a couple of one episode ironies you could of noted. For example during King Mondo's first downfall, the key emotional focus of that episode was Rocky feeling down due to Jason coming back feeling he would be replaced (even though Rocky was the one to replace Jason originally. What you don't remember what happened two years ago Rocky? Wow that's sad) and trying to fight King Mondo himself and...

05.01.2010 - 23:57 | Desertpunk23Im sick of that "he's in red" so it must be racist. Also like with the black ranger back in the day would it still be racist if the black ranger had chose the color. Lord forbid someone's proud of there ethnic heritage.

07.19.2010 - 13:05 | kwclass09lol have you ever watched captain planet. you have all 4 elements and then for some reason this kid has "Heart" thrown in. which very pointless and stupid power and it never really helped. :silly:
-
04.02.2011 - 23:46 | XandirRominovThe last element of heart in CP was actually a throw back to the fifth element that pagans recognize "Spirit" it is an element that on it's own has very little power but brings harmony and balance to the other four. They just called it heart.

My thoughts on zeo, first off the dear John letter, while I'm not solely angry at the writers forward that, I have to say it, it's completely pointless, and stupid. Especially the fact that it's a dear John letter, I find it a bit more believable if it was something a bit closer to the characters. ( although they've might've gotten back together in college, after all he's doctor, in Dino thunder!) and I have to agree it would be in much better they went with other characters, pair ups with Kat, my personal choice would be rocky. As for my thoughts on the machine empire, nobody bothered to send a EMP blast, or use a magnet on them, just saying.
Oh and the reason why they went with heart, instead of other stuff is because well, tri, tri-force, let's face it it's courage ,wisdom & power I mean heart. Although that does make the next legend of Zelda sound extremely awesome!

Circumstances of birth are entirely random and should never be a source of pride OR shame. And just to be clear, I don't think having the black guy be the black ranger is intentional racism either.

"Circumstances of birth are entirely random and should never be a source of pride OR shame."
What's wrong with being proud of your culture or your heritage? What's wrong with being proud of something that is part of your identity?
Is there something wrong with despising people who aren't? Yes. Of course.
But to use the example of the KKK to attempt to muddle the issue is simply to engage in a wide generalization that muddles the issue and is duplicitous at best.
I am of Jewish and Haitian heritage and I am proud of both, because they are part of who I am.

*starts to panic* SKULL! SKULL!!! SKUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLL!!! !!
Sorry, just finished watching the Nostalgia Critic King Kong video.....
I know the Turbo era won't fully be gone into until next video, but I do find it interesting how it happened to be around the time Fox Kids noticeably started to take a nosedive in quality. A lot of their iconic shows like Spider-Man, Eek! the Cat, Bobby's World, The Tick, and X-Men all ended while their WB shows had all moved to Kids WB by that time.

I know! Some of those cartoons, especially X-men, were legendarily good, actually trying to follow the comic, much more than those special effects filled movies. I found it sad that the 23 minutes episode of Wolverine's origin was done better and more accurately than that entire plot hole of a film.
Spider-man was also very nicely done and sometimes even a little dark and serious. It was nice that even though it was for kids, the adult fans could enjoy it as well. I had just turned nine when the transition hit, and I remember watching it with my comic book geek guardian who passed it to me ;)

05.02.2010 - 01:17 | EvilAshTwinThere's something Im surprised you didnt mention (if you did, then I didnt notice it). The guy that played Tommy's brother is the real life brother of Jason David Frank. Sadly, Eric Frank died in 2001. Im not sure on the specifics, but I do know he did die.
Anyway, for a moment there I didnt think you were going to mention the new opening theme. Which is my second favorite of all the seasons I watched.
In your next video, I really hope you touch up on the area of changing the person that played Divatox in the middle of the season.
