I LOVE the Teen Titans! I'm much more familiar with the show, and....well....ergo I like it more then the comics, but it's still interesting to see the backstory and history of the Team. can't wait for the rest, no matter how ridiculous Starfire looked in the comics.....I man the skimpy outfit is one thing but...that giant-ass hair! jeeze.....

Wonder Girl: "Does a girl have to frug with her own lasso?"

    :jaw drops:

Did Wonder Girl just ask if she was forced to masturbate or if one of the guys gives her a good fuck!?

"The Frug" was a dance in the 1960s.

Though if you do a Google search on "Wonder Girl frug" a fanfic with the meaning you're suggesting is right near the top of results.

I'm now suddenly reminded of The Joker pulling "boner of the year."
  • RonaldPoe of Magind  - Oh, God
Wasn't that in "Batman: A Word To the Wise". LOL!

    Good review,

Interesting. Thank you for that info. Being German, I had never heard of this dance before. From the Wiki article, it sounds similar to a silly "Chicken dance" craze that swept through Germany during the 1980s.

Ohmygod, after looking for some examples of the Frug on YouTube I now have this hilarious mental image of the Team Fortress 2 characters dancing it...

    Happy Teen Titans Month!

Before the Teen Titans animated series came out in the summer of 2003, I had little to no knowledge of the team, but I obviously knew about Robin. I agree that The Titans are a great superhero team, but I’m not as invested in them as I am with the Justice League, thanks to the DC Animated Universe.

I find Linkara in the Starfire costume in the title card LMAO funny.

In speaking of the comics advertising the Batman show, I’ve seen the cover of a Batman comic where Bats is being lazy in the Batcave, and is telling Robin that he’s watching his own show.

I also like the Titans’ T building. I’d like to see how they’ll pull that off whenever Warner Bros. get to make that Teen Titans films that’s been in development since 2007.

29:28 (pt. 1)- You hear that, DC. …WE HATE THE SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN ROMANCE!!!!!

Now I know why Phantasm was in a couple of your early “previously on” segments.

This has become a really interesting series of AT4W episodes. It’s like Blue Beetle Tribute 2.0.
  • psycher7
Supes/Wondy worked out just fine in Kingdom Come...but it could be that that is just an all around awesome story.
  • epirateking  - deathstroke
hate how the changed deathstroke to his real name in the show but pearlman made him seem badass regardless
  • SpeedyEric
    avatar
I don't think that putting a character with the word "death" in his name on an animated show, which is also intended for kids, was in the creaters' best interests.
  • epirateking
if they can do brother blood they can do deathstroke also for a kids show they left in a lot of adult themes like raven being the anti-christ and deathstroke turning into an unholy zombie from hell.

The Judas Contract was the story that introduced me to Teen Titans though I didn't read it when it first came out because 1.) I was a baby and 2.) I lived in Germany at the time. But when I started reading I was hooked, and even though I stopped reading when Titans Hunt happened the Animated Series made me a fan again. That being said the New 52 Titans (and the New 52 in general) can go fuck itself. The way certain Characters are portrayed is an absolute travesty (especially Starfire my favorite Titan she acts like Paris Hilton).
  • HanSK

I read most of RHatO, and not once did Starfire come across as Paris Hilton

    Slightly psychotic?
    Sure
    Stupid?
    NO!

I'm talking about her acting sexually promiscuous and haughty, that is not Starfire. Sure she has no qualms about nudity but she doesn't go around asking every guy she meets for a lay. Nor does she act like she's better than everyone else, whoever wrote her in the New 52 doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.
  • epirateking
i have read red hood and the outlaws up to last month and the only guy she has slept with is roy harper. in fact their dating how is that slutty. or are you talking about the way they made her look because i thought they always had her in skimpy stuff before. also if you think she would sleep with any one based on the dialoge from the first issue your wrong. it was a defensive response to a misunderstanding of roys question about her being jasons girl. she was assuming that he was asking if jason owned her like a slave.which in the new 52 she was.
  • TheTundraTerror  - I love these kinds of videos!

I'm one of those kinds of people who loves long, well-researched retrospective on topics. Really glad to see this, and can't wait for more!
  • Crunchy_Frog
Seconded. I was never into superhero comics during my youth (in the 1980s), or not even these days, so videos about fussing over the details of this or that character often passes me by, but the historical perspective interests me.
  • AlexanderSunpalm  - Young Justice

Linkara, I've been following your videos for a while, and I see, as clearly demonstrate above, that you have a fierce interest in the Titans. I must wonder then, what are your feelings on the new Young Justice TV series?

Hes addressed that before i believe, though it was a one off comment. Though that may have been the Blockbuster Buster and im just confusing myself
  • Enthusiasm  - Yay, Titans!

Really happy to see you taking a month to look at one of my favourite superteams, even if you won't be looking at the 2003-2011 run, which is the era that had me fall in love with the Titans, thanks in part to my participation in a DCU RPG on Livejournal circa 2007-2009. Good times, good times. Still the run you're doing still has most of what I think of as "core" titans, particularly my favourite, Koryand'r aka Starfire. ....particularly unhappy with her treatment in the reboot, but I should not allow myself to get started with THAT one.

    did it shrink ?
  • SkyExplosion
I loved the Teen Titans it's probally my favorite comic from DC featuring my favorite hero Nightwing. However I am currently beyond disgusted about what they did to Kory in the New 52, even Grayson and Kory was my favorite couple next to Stacey and Peter.

I actually did like the show. Sadly the New 52 ruined the titans aswell. Good job DC you're right up there with Marvel at trying to ruin everything good.

That art of you as all the Titan's, Creepiest thing every.

Also why is it the Animated Series Titans if that not what you're doing?
  • Xikar
    avatar
Possibly because that's where a lot of viewers will know them from. And possibly introduced to the team from.
  • Oblivion Mara
Also, there's the fact the composition of the Titans' team has changed a lot troughout their history, with a lot of on-and-off members, while the animated series has kept roughly the same cast from beginning to end. It might have been a lot simpler to go with this design.
  • ArtticWitchica

This was a really fascinating episode for me. Kind of makes me want to read all of the teen titan books, even though that might be very hard to do.

Funny enough the first super hero comics I ever read was one of the Teen Titans reboot, because I loved the tv show and my friend was collecting them.

I remember being confused at all the back story when ever it was mentioned, but now I kind of want to give it a shot again.
  • Kuro_Neko
For what it's worth, I don't find the lack of jokes a problem at all.
  • brick mooncode

I agree about the problem of "noise," I call it "no respite." I think it's a variation of what visual artists call a "lack of negative space."

I read a lot of the 60's, 70's and some of the 80's comics thanks to my Dad and much older sister's collection. I totally missed what happened in the 90's and after this retrospective I'm really glad I did skip it.

I really liked going through part 1 and going "Oh I read that one!", watching part 2 I was more like... "WHAT?", "OH NOEZ!" "Ghaaa!"

These have been two parts of a very enjoyable retrospective so far. I am excited to see further into the Titans lore in future installments : D
  • Crunchy_Frog
"Welcome to... March of the Titans."
I see what you did there, Linkara. ;-)

How long have you been planning to do this retrospective, waiting for March to come so you could deliver that pun?
  • Aotrs Commander

Fascinating. I knew some of the Titans history (I started getting the comic due to the animated series, but stopped when the reboot came about), as I'd bought one or two of the major stroy arcs (Trigon, Judas contract), but the full history new to me.

Interesting titbit, from the trade I have of the Trigon story arc: Linkara mentioned Raven's changeing appearance over time, but what he didn't say was that was sort of a happy accident. The writers just sort of noticed (or had pointed out by the fans) that Raven's art style had drifted over time (subtly enough that the artists hadn't really noticed it himself), and they just decided to run with it.

Uh... sex under false pretences is not rape. Sex when you are not capable of giving informed consent, thus it being forced from you, is rape. The only version that fits this definition where drugs or violence or the threat of violence is not part of it; is somehow managing to seem like an entirely different person than you really are. Thus your victim thinking he/she consents to have sex with one person, when in fact you are someone else altogether. That would be having a perfect disguise, or taken over someone else's body.

Merely false pretences, or lies or at least embellishing of who you are does not a rape make.
  • Linkara
    avatar
They are not giving their consent to that person who is disguising themselves as another person. No consent = rape.
  • 3DMaster
    avatar
That's what I said; but that isn't merely false pretences, that is able to appear as an entirely different individual with malicious intent.
  • armagod679
I believe many of us on the Internet refer to that as "dubious consent." HOWEVER, when it comes to the real world, I have to agree with Linkara. Someone disguising themselves as someone else in order to gain consent is rape because the consent being given is not to the person committing the act. It's a bit confusing, I admit, but think about it like this: If the character being tricked would not give consent to the other person when they're not in disguise, then they are not giving consent to that person while in disguise, therefore it is rape. And the fact that DC treats it like it isn't is wrong.
  • Dromedary Meat Cactus
    avatar
That concept can be dangerous. In Israel a man was convicted of "rape by deception" because he didn't tell the Jewish woman he had sex with that he was Arabic.
  • armagod679
Interesting lesson. I admit, I was never a big Titans fan, comics or show, so all of this was pretty new to me. And as much as I love your comedic episodes, well-researched serious retrospectives are a nice change of pace.

    What the h...

"Hey you three-- does a girl have to frug with her own magic lasso?"

Uhh... frug? Sure, I guess she must, just wait until you can get some alone time?
  • ohe
    avatar
And now I'm sure that Wonder Girl is the michelangelo of the group.

After checking out what The Frug actually is, I'm thinking they'd be better off listening to that rock and roll... or even punk. The lass is clearly a bad influence.

Ah, the Titans! When I came to comics in the late 80's the Titans were not high on my radar. I knew who they were because a book I liked, DC Comics Presents, was nice enough to do have a preview before The New Teen Titans launched in one issue. But it still took me a long time to get on board. I think the reason was because the titans were like a soap opera, with regular plot lines which made jumping on board difficult. But I did read and really enjoyed the stories and characters. I fell in love with The Judas Contract, one of my favorite TPB's ever! I could talk all day about that one. I know you were tight on time but Brother Blood deserved a mention. I loved many issues including "Who is Donna Troy?" which is one of the best comics ever wriiten IMHO and I can't believe you didn't mention that one. By the way that Trigon story you mentioned was dark! By the time the book became The New Titans I was officially on board, in time for Titans Hunt which I despised! You were 100% right in your analysis of that. It started real good but got off the rails and I was just tired of it by the time it ended. It was to much! I stayed till the end but gave up after that. Shaking things up is fine but what they did in that storyline was nuts!! By the way I hated Danny Chase, but that's cool. The Titans had some of the best writing and stories in any comic, and I still have several issues. By the way another favorite was a Secret Origins annual which covered the team history up to that point in a clever way (the story you alluded to with The Gargoyle). One last thing, where was 90's kid? Nice recap over all. It was nice to hear what happened after I stopped reading.

Dick I'm all for you updating your costume, but I really don't think you're brown pants are going to help also this is not the time to pull out fashion design and your girlfriend has just been attacked and your wedding destroyed! Good thing you did not go through the wedding with Barbara though it would be awkward if a super villain parts, That wedding as well!

This is a reason Donna Troy, is better than other heroes are wedding actually went off without a hitch!

I suppose all nerds can relate to their first exposure to certain mediums and what it was that got them to where they are today. I normally don't read comics but what first got me into comics (or manga to be more specific) is the Naruto series. Back in the 2000's, there were three major shonen series that were considered some of the most successful manga/anime franchises ever: One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. If you talked to any fan of shonen manga/anime at the time and asked them which was their favorite, odds are it would be one of those three. To me personally, I'm firmly in the Naruto side. It was goofy and fun, but what made Naruto stand out was that it has such a well fleshed out world and characters that were engaging and interesting. To make a long explanation short, Naruto is just a really fascinating read and even after 10 years, it remains as one of my favorite manga to read.
  • whitedragon1204  - Deadspace costume break.

just an idea you should try to get a deadspace Suite. like First contact.just a costume idea :)
  • IDSeeker  - About that Troia character...
    avatar
Fun fact: "Troia" in italian means "slut". Yeah... as if we didn't have enough jokes with the city of Troy (which is translated as Troia) already.

They are sons of Troy... as in the city's inhabitants.

I haven't read this so I can't be sure, but since magnetism is in quotes I think they're suggesting that it's not literal magnetism, but a more vague kind of attraction ability. I've seen that sort of thing before.
  • Tactlesscat
    avatar
OR it's just the ever present magnetic force/waves that all things have that comics use to explain how Magneto and Polaris are basically GODS.

...then again it's the 60's so probably not because real science is boring at that point in time.

" it's the 60's so probably not because real science is boring at that point in time."

The Apollo program which sent human beings to the Moon for the first time in human history started in 1961 and first succeeded in 1969.
