This was really good, based on the concept and the hype I expected something different but the comic was decent. I mean the premise is silly but it could have been worst. As to your comment on the needless back story speech, that was standard in the 70's and 80's to have the villain give a long expository speech to fill in the details whether we needed them or not. Thankfully that kind of thing stopped after awhile because some old comics are more exposition than story! Especially annoying when the villain is a one shot who we will never see again, we don't need to know his whole life history! It was so good to see you review something from the 80's, and my only complain might be there wasn't enough autobots in this one. Can't wait for next week, that should be cool!

01.21.2013 - 20:40 | cdroodIt always bugged me how the Transformer comics kept having to find ways to put Optimus and Megatron on the shelf. I understand they had to highlight other toys and the two of them pretty much overshadowed every other character. It's just that most of the others were either uninteresting or worked best playing off the leaders. Outside of Starscream and maybe Grimlock, they were all pretty generic.
Of course, they also had to keep blowing them up to make way for their new releases. It just felt that the series spent a lot of time waiting for the two of them to get back on their feet so they could go at it. It was a lot of filler.

Good stuff, Linkara!
I don't actually read a lot of comics, so it was interesting to see something that I actually own and have read several times featured on the show.
I'll share some thoughts:
[Buy the Marvel series!]
Oh, I agree with this statement. I wish I owned the whole run. It alternated between goofy 80's stuff, and really tense sequences and some powerful character deaths -- and that's not even counting Optimus "Revolving Door" Prime.
Also, Optimus Prime's brain was once backed up onto a 1.44MB floppy disk.
I'm not saying it was perfect.
[Never understood this. If you have mind control technology, especially when it's as simple as a tiny injection as we see here, how could you ever lose?]
Against humans, sure. Against robots, they need a crack in the armor to inject the pellet, a way inside so that it can find its way into the brain. In fact, Optimus Prime was once infected, which was only possible because he'd sustained an injury. (And in that case, Bombshell was only able to listen to Optimus, not control him. Optimus Prime is just that much of a badass.)
As for Buster, well...
Even as a kid I always hated the token human characters in shows like these. Seriously, did anyone ever think we would pretend we were Buster "Out-of-our-depth" Witwicky instead of a giant robot made of awesome? Yeah. I made hand cannons out of cardboard and shot things in the face.
That said, as much as I disliked it whenever the humans got involved, it was handled a lot better in Transformers than in most franchises. The characters are usually decently characterized, complete with back stories. Hell, there's even a very cool and tense sequence in issue #4 featuring a flashback of Sparkplug as a POW during the Korean war.
Also, Buster can often be seen helping his dad out even when he'd rather be doing absolutely anything else. He complains about it, but he still does it. Dedication and perseverance. Good stuff.
[This comic is incredibly goofy, but I wouldn't say it sucks.]
Pretty much this. I never liked this issue as a kid, and as an adult I only chuckle at it for how stupid it is. The plot is ridiculous, the Transformers are barely in it, and Shockwave should have caved Ratbat's head in on page one.
Still, it's worth keeping in mind that this was pretty much the nadir of the G1 comics, and that most of the time the comic was a lot of fun. I still find myself grinning whenever I remember the scene of Shockwave walking down the hallway full of broken, deactivated Autobots...

It's just that this particular exposition was particularly egregious. It's one mind controlled guy doing the exposition to a bunch of other mind controlled guys. There's no logical reason for it. It's actually worse than the typical, "As you already know..." exposition since everyone's a zombie.
It reminds me of the film Goldfinger. The villain reveals his plan to a bunch of gangsters while Bond is hiding and listening in. After telling them the whole story, he gases the whole bunch of them. So the whole point was for Bond to overhear a conversation that there was no point in having.

Just reading “The Decepticons' most evil scheme yet - CLEANLINESS FOR VEHICLES!” in the description is enough for me to do the Troll 2 “Oh my god.”
I was also thinking of Indiana Jones before first playing this video.
The first time I’ve heard of Ratbat was in “The Transformers: The Movie” when he, Rumble, Frenzy, and Ravage were attacking Preceptor and Blaster in Autobot City.
10:42- I also thought of car washes being wild, …before I got into puberty.
14:48- I love techno-bable.
15:58- I love you reaction here. It’s just like in The Cinema Snob’s “Grizzly 2” review when Brad was trying to think of some GOOD 80s George Clooney movies.
Well, …That was an experience that war worth the wait.
The next time you review a Transformers comic, you should play Weird Al’s “Dare to be Stupid” for the end credits.
I have the special 2007 Toys ’R’ Us reissue of the G1 Soundwave figure that came with Laserbeak and Ravage, and the tape deck can hold both cassette-bots.

There was a proper re-release of Soundwave and Lazerbeak in the mid 2000's a Toy's R Us exclusive about the same time( maybe a year earlier) they released the Masterpeice MP3 version you mentioned. Why such a short run? Keeping demand high I would guess plus less risk of loosing money on shorter production runs. You can still pick one up online... for about $70.00

I have the same KO Linkara used here (along with a regular G1 Soundwave) and the thing is, the KO is actually just as good as the Hasbro version plus is the same size as Blaster. The tapes are about twice the normal size, but it's nice to be able to have the two cassette players together and not have one be half the size of the other. Not to mention the one I got only cost $12 from a KO shop online that Hasbro has since gotten shut down.
One of the last things I got from them (for free since they were shutting down, he sent me some extra stuff in my last order including a perfect set of KO G1 Dinobots and Seekers in box lol Seriously, you can't tell them from the real ones) was an oversized KO of the Legends version of G1 Megatron. The thing looks better than the Masterpiece in bot mode.

...y'know I actually found the comic to be not only non-sucky, but actually halfway decent, especially when you take the time period it was made into consideration. Heck, there were episodes in the G1 tv series that made a LOT less sense than this. Plus, I'm always a bit of a sucker for seeing the smaller transformers getting a chance to shine.
Although I'm still waiting for the writers to get really REALLY daring and crazy, and publish a transformers universe where Optimus Prime and Megatron AREN'T THE MAIN CHARACTERS 0_0

Yes Disco is a type of music but the word means colorful dance club. There are still dance clubs that refuse to call them self clubs they say they are a disco. I know when most people hear disco they think of the type of music but truth be told the clubs were and are remembered more fondly then the music any how. Also yes there were discos that played heavy metal, well I saw one in The Terminator sense I am only 20...Yeah It is a nit picking but hey it the only thing I need to correct you on so good job.
