"I just had an idea, Daddy. What if we turned into the red versions of Hulk and Shehulk?"

Having "America (Fuck Yeah)" and "Now You're a Man" practically back to back was my favorite part of the episode.

I must say, this episode didn't really do much to make me more of a fan of the Hulk. His origin, at least in helping Rick Jones, is nice to finally see in context, and I like the idea of him being a sort of "Frankenstein meets Jekyll and Hyde", but that's about it.

Doing call backs to all of the other episodes in this year's Secret Origins Month was nice. If we're finally going to get to The Avengers next year, does that mean you'll talk about Thor and Ant-Man as well? Maybe not Ant-Man, since you like to go back and forth between DC and Marvel, and as you pointed out, you didn't talk about the main characters of Brave and the Bold #54. Maybe Aquaman next year?

I'm curious, what were YOU saying during the "All of the fans of-" bit?

    "I don't make errors"
Wasn't that the same thing Victor Von Doom said when he performed that experiment that scarred his face?

Oh okay, whoever did the titlecard as your stand-in title card artist is really good, I love thier use of shadows and shading to give it that classic horror comics effect. Nicely done.

This person is known as GarthTheDestroyer on DeviantArt. He seems to be a very talented artist, i like how he did the title card as well

The reason people take such umbrage with people referring to the monster as Frankenstein is because in the original novel it was very explicit that it WASN'T his name, though outside the book it seems Mary called him Adam. Not to say your take on it is wrong, as the novel and the movies have basically nothing in common. If you think the monster is meant to be sympathetic in the movies, try reading the book. The monster doesn't die to a mob of angry villagers or anything like that, he is a fully literate, articulate, and educated man, probably genius level, and much of the story is from his point of view. It is a legendarily dry read though.
  • Phantom Roxas
    avatar
Basically, the Frankenstein bit was shorter because Linksano had covered this same thing in a previous episode. He acknowledges the name Adam, but reasons that because the monster is the creation of Frankenstein, he is his son and thus inherits the name.
  • Dust
Which it would promptly reject - given it's self-loathing and murderous feeling to his entire family.
  • Phantom Roxas
    avatar
A good point, but I imagine it wouldn't take very well to be called a monster either. I believe the monster calls himself Frankenstein's Adam at one point, suggesting a preference for that, but if it's possible for him to be offended by being called "the monster" or "Frankenstein", does it really matter what we call him?

Now for Christmas to come around and have a shot. Next week we get ourselves a Superman comic. Yeah, the last time we reviewed a Superman comic in December we wound up with Bearded Idiot. Speaking of Bearded Idiot I can't wait until we get back to Kamandi at Earth's end. But still, when will you finish Brute Force? Anyways keep up the good work.
  • *sigh*
    avatar
Hahaha soapbox joke, that was funny.

Though to be honest I question everyone's motives, so maybe that's why I'm partially sympathetic with Harris's rant.

I created an account to ask for explanation for the sitting on soap joke. Thank you *sigh*.

    Box of soap.

  • Grandboss

I got it thanks to *sigh*. But I appreciate your explanation with fangirlish giggling, Linkara.
  • Nivmarx  - What?
    avatar
I still don't get it. Can someone explain it so a German can understand it?
  • vonPeterhof
To be on a soapbox - to talk (usually in an opinionated way) about one's pet topic, especially when it's only tangentially relevant to an ongoing discussion.

Edit: oops, didn't realize this was posted almost two weeks ago, hehe.
  • jaymiechan
and here i thought it was partially a joke based on 'con funk'.
  • Kossmeister

The second story involves a character named "the Gargoyle" and not one reference to a certain mid-1990s Disney cartoon show that still has many fans? I guess Linkara didn't watch the show as a kid.

"Frankenstein" could be used as the monster's surname, but the problem with that is that he doesn't have a proper first name to distinguish himself from his creator.
  • Linkara
    avatar
Unfortunately, no, I did not watch Gargoyles when I was a kid, sorry.
  • Rynjin
    avatar
Ooh, you're really missing out. If you've ever got the time to sit down and watch 'em, they're great.

Though I guess you might already be swamped watching Power Rangers episodes (if you're still doing that) and other stuff you regularly keep up with + doing these videos.
  • PlasticFrogCG
    avatar
Yes, Linkara should watch Gargoyles. Then he can start working in Xanatos Gambit jokes!
  • thorondragon
then you are rather missing out. gargoyles was a surprisingly complex and interesting animated action series. you do yourself an injustice not watching it.
even better for you. gargoyles was made into a small comic series some time after the original run. it seems that it was made because of a somewhat disappointing final season for the series. i am uncertain of its quality, never reading it, but it might give you incentive to watch the series to know the plot lines of it and then see how well these comics take those polot lines and how well the stories are drawn, plotted, etc.
hmmmm, hell, you could use gargoyle comics for the halloween theme next year. while not horror, gargoyles is steeped in both supernatural and scifi aspects.
  • orthdoxcomb9
why didn't the kid also get effected by the radiation and turn into a retardo hulk. I smell some serious bs. But anyway good review Linkara.
  • Semudara
    avatar
Because he was in the ditch, duh. Everyone knows that you aren't affected by radiation if you're in a shallow ditch.
  • Captain Speedbump
FYI, the picture of the second bald guy the Gargoyle was talking to when he said said "It was YOU..." was then Soviet Prime Minister Nikita Khrushchev. Gotta love those Cold War era comics!

I really like how Stan Lee took 2 famous horror tales, and combind them to make another famous character. Also, I find the comic origin to be a bit cliche in live action standards, and the Rick Jones thing to my POV is not realistic.

2:04- I really, REALLY love this movie.

Marvel also used the Grey Hulk in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, and it was even mentioned breifly in a deleted scene from The Incredible Hulk movie from 2008.

6:19- HAHAHA! I was also thinking that.

10:22- Damn right. I'm AOK for seeing women dress as Captain America, Robin, or Thor.

Nice job on the Short Circuit reference.

23:12- Just like fans of Twilight.

I agree that this isn't that good of an origin story. It's a good thing that Lee replaced the night fall transformation and put in the anger. At least this wasn't "The Amazing Bulk."

Have fun with the Christmas comics.
  • Fangheart

23:12 Hey! that's what I said! Go get your own SpeedyEric!

NOTICE: for those who can't tell, the above is a joke. it is playful banter. it is not meant to be taken seriously. it is not meant to be taken to heart. please do not think I'm really telling him to go get his own joke. I am simply goofing around. thank you.

"Son of Frankenstein" was kind of awful though, so should that really be considered canon?
  • Linkara

Are you kidding? Son of Frankenstein was awesome! It was Ghost of Frankenstein when the series began to go downhill.
  • SpeedyEric

I also like this film, and it was also parodied in "Young Frankenstein." Even James Rolfe gives this film a 10 out of 10. Check out this list to see my proof:

  • ladydiskette

Have you ever seen "Bride of Frankenstein" before Linkara?

    Just curious.
  • TheDevilsAdvocate
    avatar
Literally speaking, "canon" is just part of the body of work to which something belongs. So all the Universal Frankenstein films are Universal Horror Canon... yes, even Frankenstein meets the Wolfman, sadly.

But yeah, Son of Frankenstein is awesome!
  • armagod679
For once, I have nothing to say about the counterculture. This story was kind of dry to me.

But I can't wait for the Christmas set!
  • nelsinki

Mhhh, The experiment of the Gamma Bomb was not a success, but didn't suck if you ask to me, a mistake on maths and could be an entire continent contaminated with gama radiation on the best scenario, on the worst scenario, well, I can imagine a supernova -not the hero-.

On a different topic I have to say that I congratulate Bruce for not trying to hide Rick in a fridge, that was smart for the time.

Oh, hey! GarththeDestroyer did the title card again!

And, I've just realized why Betty is in the testing facility: It's take your daughter to work day. That is the only explanation.

Though, I can't believe that there haven't been any "In Soviet Russia, radiation cures deformities" jokes yet.
  • Sockpuppet
    avatar
I know you've seen AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN (what with the clip!) so I know you KNOW the military did have soldiers take cover in trenches during nuclear tests. A fairly small amount of erth can black radiation effectively-- FALL OUT is radioactive dust, that you can breathe in or get on you, so that's a different story, but the trench would work fine for its purpose.
  • zepolmas  - Re; Almost Supernatural Forces
People were pretty spooked about atomic energy and what might happen in a third world war with nuclear weapons. Some people obsessed over it to the point where it became almost prothetic.
I'm guessing that's what Betty was refering to.
  • Thuran
Have to admit, this was one of the funniest episodes of a long time and had me laughing out loud several times, good stuff.

Buuut, since you already seem to be having an egotrip over how awesome you are, let me throw in that I am SORELY disappointed that you did not find a way to work in the awesome intro for the original 1966 animated show. For those who have missed one of the most "wtf?!" moments of comics, well, here you go: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=CO1b6ywmoSg

The Hulk is by far my favorite hero of all time. He's the strongest hero and the one most misunderstood. He wants to be left alone, but is always hunted, and even those he would consider his friends always turn on him, Emphasis on always. Plus without him, the Avengers wouldn't have formed. He's a very 3 dimensional character and isn't just a mindless brute, and people should recognize him as such.

On a related note my only problem with the Red Hulk is that he doesn't have his mustache when he transforms. It would have spoiled who he was early on, but it would've looked awesome (and silly) in my opinion.
  • Zihon

i have afraid of asking who died for a stamp of rampaging llamas.... that's how i lost my half cousin.
  • Leon Real
The way Hulk pushed Rick around and refused to listen to his advice. I've gotta say, in his original version, Hulk was quite a jerk. More like a pretencious bully than a rampaging monster.
  • Merklyn236

"Fermat" is pronounced "fer-maw" BTW. :)

I think both the book and the movies can be considered when talking about the story of Frankenstein (and believe me, they have almost nothing in common) so I say calling the monster Frankenstein is correct, unless you are specifically talking about the book character where he remains unnamed. The monster was also sympathetic in the book, as was Dr. Frankenstein himself. I enjoyed it well enough, although there was a lot of moping about in the third act on both their parts, if I recall.

The "box of soap" joke was perfect.
