That's easy. Just have a succession of relatively peaceful scenes with ordinary, even cheery, artwork, and then *BAM* nightmare fodder. Works especially well if there's some tension beforehand, but not TOO much.
Although, it's not usually a jump scare in quite the same way as in a movie. There doesn't have to be any "jumping", just a sudden and shocking reveal of something horrifying.

They have something similar in Itsuwaribito, in which the first twenty pages would have you think it's your usual cheery shonen manga about a hero with boundless optimism, even if he never tells the truth. At least, until ::SPOILERS!:: his best friend betrays him and you turn the page and it's a two-page spread of all the orphans dead, mutilated, and their corpses floating in a pool of blood.

11.07.2012 - 17:02 | Tenco1Well that's a pleasant surprise, Linkara and I have the same most wanted superpower.
Though, my favorite "for fun" power would be the ability to telepathically project audio and/or video, so I could basically make video references and you don't really care anymore, do you?

I will admit, when I heard Linkara say that it wasn't the ACTUAL Uzumaki manga he was going to read I kinda sighed with relief because I am still too much of a chicken to read the actual horror manga.
At least this comic isn't as scary to me as the source material. Considering I am watching this before I go to bed and all. o.o'

Oh, well in that case, I am lucky I didn't have any nightmares that night then.
I still would be too scared to read the manga however, but it goes to show the person who did the artwork was really talented in conveying the unsettling nature and dark feelings of foreboding many readers I have known to read it have felt when they took at look at the images.
As terrifying as they look, as a artist myself, I can at the same time appreciate how much work and effort they put in to give it the desired effect and evoked emotions needed to make the manga effecting.

...note to self, don't watch the Uzamaki review while eating =S
But class vid and funny review, never been one for horror comics but after watching LBOTD and this think I'll make more an effort to read some, got a nice collection called The Mammoth Book of Best Horror Comics so it's not like I have an excuse not to read them XD

11.07.2012 - 17:20 | armagod679Okay, seriously, we need a Harvey Finevoice album. I don't even care what's on it, because almost anything you choose will be great, and I know I sound like a very obsessive fangirl right now, but that's just what your voice does to me.

YES!! Telekinesis can be used to replicate practically every superpower ever. as long as you can use the Telekinesis on individual atoms and sub-atomic particles, you can do basically ANYTHING! seriously not just move stuff around, but create fire and electricity, you can rearrange atoms to turn something into something else, Telekinesis is like the Swiss army knife of superpowers

Since the Magic Gun's backstory was explained in the one Silent Hill arc where Linkara constantly harped on how stupid it was that the one character got a tome of evil magic of Ebay I always thought it would've been a perfect ironic humor moment to reveal Linkara stumbled upon the MG on an Ebay auction.

Love your live vids and this one was no exception. Absolutely hilarious and I love the audience reactions as well especially the person who shouted "Oh hi there!" and when they started yelling "Rape face!" XD My reaction to the guy jammed in the wheel well was the same as the audience to, a combination of shock and laughter.
"And here's your nightmare fuel!"
AAAH! Take it off screen! Take it off screeeeeeenn!!! *Throws blanket over laptop*

Although I enjoyed the episode Linkara I think your lack of Asian folklore knowledge undermines the comedic idea you were trying to cultivate; with all due respect. XD
The whole 'treat it like a vampire' plan and the 'hopping' are not silly elements. I'm going to guess you've never heard of a Jiang Shi before?
http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Jiang_Shi
The only thing 'logic breaking' about treating Mitsuru like that is the boyfriend mistook the counter methods and treated him like a Western Vampire instead of an Eastern one.
That said; thanks for reviewing this. I'd never heard about it until now and I'm going to have to look it up sometime. Enjoyed the show as always.

Yeah, I already read this after Morte mentioned it... Its still very very silly... I was laughing in the end of the comic... Good job, making it even more funny, Linkara... ;-)
As for a power... I probably go with redirect damage power (in the manga Medaka Box is a guy who can redirect damage to another spot), in which case, you wouldn't be too much a threat for people unless they themselves dare you attack you...

11.08.2012 - 10:52 | JarochoI'm happy to see Linkara admit that his continued nerdrage over One More Day (and to an extent, any storyline that doesn't retcon it) is totally irrational.
This is comics. A medium where a total hack is allowed take apart a genius run and a mediocre writer can waste a character for the entirety of your childhood. Five years obsessing over a storyline is a bit much considering the guilty parties are long gone and the book is currently as good as it has been in long, long time.

I understand Linkara's hatred of One More Day, since I too have an irrational hatred of something. You know it's stupid, but it still stirs up rage in you. For me, it's mainly because I'm so passionate about the series this particular event happened in, and I'm overly empathetic towards fictional characters.

Ah Uzumaki... I've heard of it, but never actually read it since I am too much of a coward.
Though when I think of Uzumaki, I can't help but be reminded of this song by They Might Be Giants:
"The spiraling shape will make you go insane,
But everyone wants to see that groovy thing,
Everyone wants to see that thing..."
Seriously, it's surprisingly appropriate.
