Oh, god yes! Those ads were so fun!
Anyway, great video, Linkara! My one complaint is that it wasn't longer. I'd love to see more videos like these in the future. If you do see, I also ask that you review some of those Hostess ads in each episode. I found an old Fantastic Four comic in my garage a while back and it had one of those Hostess ads with Spiderman in it. (that was the most memorable thing about the comic, actually XD ) I watched this video and was so happy to find out there were more of those ads.

Yay! The return of Douchy McNitpick! I love that guy!
"-for calling the Nostalgia Chick a whore for not conforming to my standards of beauty-!" lol, so typically of people like Douchy.
"-why can't she look more like Benzaie?!?!?!"....that made me lawl so hard XD Oh Douchy never stop showing us what a lonely pathetic loser you are.
loved the stinger at the end, now I know what to use as bait if I ever want to kidnap Linkara.

HA! That Hostess ad had me rolling. It was so absurd that it was genius. I'm all for more ad specials like this one if they show off some of the more crazy ads that have been run.
Also, that one with the game with the fake SEGA want ad reminded me of a fake want ad me and my friend came up with once for Final Fantasy protagonists that I feel like sharing now.

Dude, you could've just made a video that covered Hostess ads alone & it still would've been pure win. ^_^
That being said, it somehow felt shorter than NC's videos, for a few reasons. Like maybe you could've covered a little more, maybe gone on for a few minutes more. Minor complaint, though.
Also, you mentioned the TurboGrafx-16 & comics together, but STILL no mention of Johnny Turbo?? Cocktease. =P
All in all, another damn good video from the master himself, & I'd definitely like to see this idea again. Bravo!

I think the reason this wasn't as good as the Nostalgia Critic's commercials is because there's way more to make fun of with commercials. Commercials aren't limited to one or two pages, they have full motion video, can utilize special effects, have sound, etc.
So there's a lot more material to make fun of.

I didn’t realize you were doing something similar to The Nostalgia Critic commercial specials until this video started. Huh, I as slooooooooooooooooooooow.
I wonder if we’ll see Douchey all bruised and bandaged in NC’s next f**k-ups list.
Any chance you would review Blackwolf? Sounds like a comic 90s Kid would enjoy.
I only heard of wireless controllers during the time when today’s video game consoles were first out. I have a PS3.
11:13- So, civilians in the Marvel Universe are like rats in a maze, and the cheese is replaced with fruit pies, and the electric shock is a crisis?
15:04- In other words, it’s a hovercraft that functions like a hovercraft being driven by either The Hulk or The Thing.
This has been a Nice look in the past of old comic advertisements.
One of the games available for the TurboGrafX 16 on CD is “Street Fighter I” (aka Fighting Street), and AVGN has already shown us that that game sucks.

I remember seeing the ad for the wireless controllers. I never wanted to try them because i realized i'd have to use batteries to keep going, and i didn't want it to lose functionality during a really difficult part of a game. And back then AA's didn't power as long - or at least the technology that uses AA batteries wasn't developed as it is today - my first CD walkman would last 3 hours on 2 AAs. My last one would last 24 hours on 2 AAs. And they were bought only 5 years apart.

The first home video game system to have a wireless controller was the Atari 2600. It was a bit bigger than the wired controllers, but it worked really well. It was also the best wireless controller right up to the ones made for the three new-gen systems. The reason it was so good is that Atari used radio signals (like a portable phone, non-cell) and the others used infrared (like a tv remote). So the Atari controller worked anyway you held it whereas the others had to be pointed at a sensor at all times. It's odd that it took them so long to go back to the original idea seeing as it was far superior to infrared, but it was most likely done to cut production costs or something.
-
07.26.2011 - 21:17 | TommyTreeIt probably helped that the Atari controller was so simple. But whatever the reason, there's no denying how cool it was to have the only wireless controller while your buddy was stuck to the length of the chord. Plus it had that awesome 80s/90s protruding antenna. I kind of wish my iPhone had an antenna like those.

As good as this episode was, I think it should be kind of a one time thing. Though I admit, I enjoy looking at old video game comic book/magazine adds, an inside knowledge of it is requires and if that's not covered in these episodes, it makes talking about it all that much more pointless...
Though, I did look up Sub-terrania because of this.

Sorry Linkara, but this just wasn't as good as standard AT4W episodes.
I think what makes NC's commercials videos so hilarious are the fact that he makes fun of so many aspects of them...bad production values (kiddie 900 numbers), terrible over-acting (Devon Sawa as the Nerf Kid), and cringeworthy products (WUNDER BONER!), plus the fact that while some people werent into comic books to feel nostalgic about the ads, EVERYONE has at least seen one McDonalds commercial from the 80s.
Here, we are just shown you reading the add. Even with your commentary, it's not nearly as fun.
I do however always LOVE to see nutty ad-based comic strips. The Thing shilling fruit pies and Batman and Robin saving the world with cupcakes were the best parts of this video, and are quite possibly even more insane than the Superman-Quik Bunny teamup.

Exactly. TV and movie ads are, besides moving pictures, specially made and stand alone. Comic ads are static and only found within comics and usually adress only the people that read comics, whereas tv ads are made for almost everyone.
While this certainly wasn't bad, it missed some of the awesome your usual AT4W episodes have.

WHAT, no mention of Captain Tootsie. This guy MYSTIFIES me and still haunts me.
The premise was that a buff guy and a bunch of little kids would run into trouble, at which point they would eat a tootsie roll for "a quick bust of energy" after which they would do stupid things like: kill a bear, prevent a dam from breaking, tame rattle snakes, beat up lions, stop armed robbers and be as strong as the Hulk (for real). And to top it off they would celebrate their bullshit by (wait for it), eating tootsie rolls.
Basically if Linkara were to do another ad review he should look at the older ads. They have creepy morals (beating up little kids, putting women in their place) and products that do amazing things (I'd say that half of the old ads would somehow using the product to save another person's life. And in the most assinine ways possible. With Captain Tootsie being the worst)

07.25.2011 - 22:54 | RydelWhile this was pretty fun, I think I would have preferred to at least see them in chronological order, so we could see how the advertisements changed over time.
You also skipped over some of the really cheesy/weird ones from those old mail-in pages, like submarines and X-ray glasses. Some of those really made me wonder how they didn't get sued for false advertising, even as a kid

07.25.2011 - 22:54 | TsubasagaI would like see more of these videos. Also is hotess is that popular?. I never heard them(at least here in Mexico)

07.25.2011 - 23:13 | VagerynAs a child I had an inquiring mind and fairly steady allowance and I can tell you that I spent said allowance on stupid things. One of which was a hovercraft (called UFO) advertised on the back of a Boys Life magazine. Did it work? Well, yes and no. On smooth surface it easily glided across the floor. Wooden floors presented some difficulty and carpet just wasn't happening.
The hover craft was a thin plastic shell (think old time Halloween masks) with a small battery operated fan that sat in the center. The air from the fan would fill the space between the floor and the fan causing it to move. If any air escaped however it just kinda sat there.
To be honest it didn't last long, maybe a week before I cracked it somehow, but I had all kinds of fun with the fan. Outside of the shell it became a battery operated top!

Hmmm you know, I sort of liked this, and sort of did not. I'll explain why.
Like:
-I was always fascinated by some of the weirder stuff they offered. The air car? The ghost? X-ray goggles?
-It is a nice shake-up, and works well after a short series of videos. Gives a convenient breather from continuity failure.
-Something I noticed in particular, was that is allowed you to get a bit more into your own experiences. I like that.
Dislike:
-As has been mentioned: too short.
-Would have been better if you stopped at every add a bit longer, considering the true consequences of what is said (The difference is in your head? So there IS no difference!?)
-It would've been great if you had gotten your hands on one of the more obscure or weird items advertised to close out with. It felt sort of sudden and forced as an ending now.
Really, I think you should no longer do these as episodes, unless you are willing to present the real comic book like products with it (the weird stuff, as mentioned).
I think it would be better if when you encounter them in comics you're reviewing anyway, spend some time on them. Like you used to do with letter pages every now and then.

Nice job on this! I wouldn't mind if you made another, but like other's have been saying, printed ads don't have quite the same pizazz as TV... Although those Hostess ads were hilarious. Personally, I think your jokes are enough to carry an episode :)
Something tells me, I'll be making a trip to Jewel tomorrow to pick up 10 boxes of Hostess cakes.

I do not know the origins of the name,
but from reading Lewis's "Angel Armour" books (which yes I do own. I'm that much of a Fan Boy)
Linkara was the 'Jesus' figure on the Planet of Sin, where his Trilogy took place.
Im guessing that Lewis had a fondness for the name he had originaly used for his Published books and simply rehashed it for AT4W.
Yet I do not know if he originaly created the name for the 'Angel Armour' books or is it was taken fom another form of media.
But odds are it has No Relation to Zelda.

This isn't a bad concept. I got the impression that you were having to dig deeper to make these ads funny and the extra effort put into the review was very appreciated. Overall, the review was amusing and it was fun to see you try something a little different. If you decided to do another one of these, I'd definitely watch.
Oh, speaking of comic book ads! Did you ever come across the Colgate Junior ads back in the early nineties where Captain America and the Colgate Junior mascot fought off Count Plagula?
Here is a link: http:// weeatyellowsnow.blogspot. com/2011/04/colgate- junior-captain-america- ftw.html? zx=63451f72aca38793
I remember reading these as a kid and finding them bizarre, yet somehow nonsensically hilarious.
Well played sir.
