Great review Linkara, and I loved the 8-bit music cover of your them song. But there is one thing that has been puzzling me throughout this whole review. Where is Princess Peach in all this?
I mean, Princess Daisy was Luigi's woman not Marios. Maybe it because I played the Nintendo version and not the Gameboy version but it just feels off having Princess Daisy being told by Linkara that Mario is like her ex-boyfriend. I understand he is not a huge gamer and all, but somehow I feel this is a mistake on the comics part. Since when did Princess Daisy and Mario ever have a "rescue" fling going?
Also as anyone as pissed as I was that we didn't see Herman recieve any punishment for stealing that game at the end, I really wanted some of the video games to show him a lesson. He kinda reminds me of those agoraphobic, shut-in, jerk gamers that you always see on Youtube derserving to be trolled.

06.21.2011 - 08:26 | Dragon_NexusDaisy's first appearance was in Super Mario Land. She was the kidnapped princess Mario had to rescue from Tatanga.
After that she kinda faded into obscurity for some time. Mario Land 2 was all about getting the castle gifted to him by Daisy and the people of Mushroom Kingdom back from his evil alter ego Wario (Wario's first appearance).
Mario Land 3 didn't feature Mario at all, instead having the subtitle of Wario Land where Wario fights, steals and hoards coins and treasures in order to build his *own* castle.
After that there weren't any more Mario Lands. Just sequels to Wario Land.
Daisy came back years later as fan service for the Kart games. Peach was at first known as Princess toadstool, then later Peach Toadstool and now pretty much just Peach.

06.21.2011 - 08:31 | FlamebladeSuper Mario Land was the first appearance of Daisy and she was rescued in that game by Mario. It wasn't until after that that Peach and Daisy became more important and Daisy was paired off with Luigi. I'm assuming this comic came out around the same time as SML and it mostly based on that game alone.
-
06.21.2011 - 08:44 | KungFuManFun bit regarding that: the reason she's Daisy and you're not fighting Bowser in SML? The R&D1 dev team didn't like Mario, and didn't want to use him. They ended up forced to.
Years later they were able to create a character they wanted to instead: Wario.

Glad you guys like the theme I did here (which actually is over 2 years old!). I know I don't have download links set up on my site (which I do out of respect for most folks I do work for - I generally haven't set up download links for songs, but I'll be trying to do so in the near future.
However!
I did post up D/L links for this song back when I first made it over on the forums:
http:// thatguywiththeglasses.com /forums/viewtopic.php? f=69&t=5770
And here is a link directly to the version of the theme used in this review:

The Ultimate Warrior had this to say:
The gameboy original is the ultimate power game station in the universe Hulk Hogan.
The comic is comparable to the inner turmoil that gamer companies desire to spread their message to the rest of the world. Much like I express my inner turmoil by beating expressions of pointlessness into my brain, Hulk Hogan.
Do not insist that the Ultimate Warrior has no presence in the comment on the guy with the pretty hat, Hulk Hogan.
The black gate is nearly complete, Hulk HOgan. But first me and my inner toil must listen to the ultimate musical warrioress musical video of the dancing summoner Yuna. SHCRONK!!!
Avoid the demon posessed ninja Hulk HOgan. He will go kung-tendo on the part of you that is easily kickable in the ring of torment.

I can already tell that this comic isn’t about Game Boy from Captain N (The Gay Master).
The 8/16 bit version of the theme song sounded pretty good. First Spoony, then The Cinema Snob, and know Linkara. Well done, Skitch.
3:42- And he must love the Rambo Nintendo game so much, he got a poster of the cartridge image hanging on his wall.
4:22- CHANGE!!! YOU GOT CHANGE!?!? OH, COME ON!! HELP A GUY OUT WILL YA!?!? COME ON, CHANGE!!!
10:28- 90s Kid really needs a girlfriend, …from the 90s of course.
11:36- I’d like to see a team-up of Hulk Hogan and Chuck Norris. Thanks for nothing, you stupid comic.
14:36- At least this is a hair better than the opening page of Cable #1.
15:18- Tell me about it. =(
I’d like to see a review of a Pokemon comic, and see how much fun the Game Boy comic series has in Stupid Land.
Everything involving The Entity is getting creepyer and creepyer.

YES!!!!! FINALLY A REVIEW OF A COMIC I'VE ACTUALLY READ!!!! (Yeah, you grabbed the one Archie Ninja Turtles comic I didn't)
And about that Mario voice comment - was that supposed to be a subtle joke, or were you not aware that Mario was supposedly from Brooklyn according to the original cartoons and movie?

06.21.2011 - 08:28 | Dragon_NexusAh for the good old days when Japan just invented characters with no backstory and the american media created stories in order to make them sell.
Sonic had this too, with a back story explaining how he became blue and where Robotnik came from etc.
What ties the two together in another respect is that neither Mario's nor Sonic's stories were ever followed up on by the Japanese developers once they did, in fact, start creating stories for their characters.

I was the exact same way when it came for my game boy... No really. I got a game boy pocket in the late '90s and I used it to mostly play Pokemon... but my game boy was a blue one.
By the way, I hate to point this out, but Daisy wasn't the one that made him cake, Peach (or Toadstool if you go b the early days) is. Daisy is Luigi's love interst and more of a tomboy.

Hmmmmm....*puts her Sherlock Holms cap on and gets out a pipe* Very interesting...perhaps there is a link to The Entity and this "God" that the little girl was sacrificed to?
From the looks of the "poem" on that one page he read in the book, it sounds like we are dealing with some HP Lovecraftian stuff all up in here folks. Whether its something involving the Great Old Ones or its other more sinister counterparts we can only hope and pray more victims are not on its list.
*blows bubbles out of her pipe*
However, it poses one question....how can you defeat something which at this moment. Cannot be seen? o.O

Man, I'd hate to see what these people would do with Angry Birds.
I have to point out, however, that not all siblings have the same hair color or look at all alike. For example, both of my parents had one light-haired parent and one dark-haired parent. Each inherited genes for both the light and dark pigmentations, but they both have dark hair because the gene for dark hair is dominant, while the gene for light hair is recessive. My sister, likewise, inherited at least one set of dominant genes for dark hair and dark eyes, while I inherited only recessive genes and wound up with light hair and light eyes. As a result, my sister and I don't look like we're related. A similar thing could have happened with Ricky and his brother. It's just genetics.

So, is anyone else having flashbacks to Portal when reading the pages of that book?
I have to admit, I keep coming up with theories, but then the more I read the poem, the less they make sense. As far as I can tell though, the lost beast might actually be the lone survivor of a dead world.
Good review! And spookiness of an ending! I approve!

06.21.2011 - 00:25 | preb7732awesome review as always
what company thought it should make a gameboy comic?
what company thought that it should represent it in a commercial with a robot?
5:14-5:34 - wow, what a good main character
6:30 - what, a horny plumber who kill creatures all day long is an OK model, but a pseudo-patriot a-hole is NOT ok for your main character?
8:50 - am i the only one who thinks he's describing George W. Bush?
10:57 - yeah, thats prince peach for ya

06.21.2011 - 01:03 | suntzuHeh, I remember reading this comic (and #2) in French. I think it was in a doctor's waiting room.
But yeah, a reasonably fun romp. Probably helps that I played Super Mario Land and enjoyed it a lot.

Super Mario Land was actually the first video game I ever owned, and it came with a clear Game Boy Pocket like yours when I got it. For years I honestly thought it was some kind of port of the original Super Mario Bros., because it's so damn similar. So anyway, I wasn't expecting to recognize as many of the game creatures in this comic as I did. Although, I don't recall ever actually knowing about the bad guy, as I was never able to finish the game.
Also, I really have to wonder just what the hell is wrong with the store worker. I guess there's at least psychopathy, kleptomania, and Stockholm's Syndrome (He got tied down by the bad guy and attacked Mario when he got up). Seriously, what the hell were they thinking having such a messed up human character in a comic made to sell Game Boys to children?
Oh yeah, and here's a funny coincidence; Earlier today I saw that episode of Invader Zim for the first time. What are the odds?

06.21.2011 - 01:47 | TamLinOh yeah, early Valiant. We...don't talk about that time...
As I recall, Valiant's initial business model was to produce comics based on already-successful pop culture icons, like video games and wrestlers, on the theory that they would have cross-medium appeal. Which of course they did not, and it was only after the whole company almost washed out in the first year that they said "Fuck it, let's just write what we want if we're probably going to go under anyway."
The things is, judging from this video, it seems like even their commercial tripe was surprisingly well-written. I mean, this comic looks stupid, but given the boneheadedness of the concept, it also looks rather fun and engaging, all things considered.
On a last note, I'm one of the people who doesn't like elaborate skits and pageants in these videos, and I've been particularly critical of Linkara's in the past. But, honestly, the bookend on this video was legitimately creepy. I hope he keeps up the anxiety-ridden horror vibe, because it's pretty effective so far.

That was another great review. Man, that was also a very entertaining, if silly, comic :D Was nice for a change.
As for the ending, man, I have this weird theory, though it's probably wrong.
What if Lord Vice is the Linkara from his universe gone mad. And what if what he was trying to stop was ANOTHER Linkara from another universe?! D: Okay, I'm probably wrong. Huh, can't wait to see o A o
