Yeah...except that I'm a little scared for Linkara now; it is EXTREMELY bad luck for the bottle not to break during a christening. I cannot stress enough how bad it is. If given a choice, sailors would completely dismantle a ship that resisted christening. Or at the very least, refuse to sail in it.

-
04.19.2011 - 00:04 | SvenI've listened to a podcast that had both SFDebris and Linkara as a guest, so they do sort of know each other.
I get the impression from some of Linkara's comments here that he's never seen the Director's Edition; well worth watching even if it doesn't nearly fix all the movie's problems.
One other thing I want to touch on, regarding Spock's character resolution. His comment that his task on Vulcan is complete isn't out of the blue. Spock starts out wanting total logic, but through his mind meld with V'ger finds out that's not enough. The post-mindmeld scene with Kirk in sickbay, as well as the crying scene (which is iirc not in the theatrical cut, thus robbing Spock's arc of its conclusion, but was restored in the DE), those form the resolution of Spock's development. His comment at the end reflects that because of what he learned from V'ger, he no longer needs to resume Kolinahr.
Imo, Spock's development and its parallels with V'ger are just about the only part of the movie's premise that was decently realized in the film (though only in the DE, because it does need the crying scene to work).

Aw, 90s Kid wasn't invited to the christening?
BTW, if you're looking for other bad movie licensed comics, I was searching my on local store online out of curiosity, and found out there was comic made of... Rainbow Brite and The Star Stealer!!!!! My pleas to get the Chick to review the movie have so far come up empty, but if I can get the comic cheap, I would totally donate it to you for review.

04.20.2011 - 21:32 | OK-SsukaYeah, from what people have said, Nemesis basically added in the amendment that while odd numbered movies were terrible or at best sub-par, and even numbered movies are generally good to great, any movie number that is a multiple of five tends to be really bad.
I - Meh
II - Great. Possibly Number 1 in Star Trek Moviedom.
III - Eh...but did lead to...
IV - Whales...IN SPACE!!!
V - Why did "God" need a spaceship, anyways? The worst of the Classic Series Movies.
VI - Ends the movie series on a good, if not high, note.
VII - Eh...and also lead to that whole dropping a bridge on him scene. :/
VIII - The best of the TNG movie series, and also a contender for number 1 spot, if at least for number 2.
IX - Eh...
X - I haven't seen this, so I cannot personally say if this was bad or not, but people around have not said much positive about this movie...no real comment on this.
XI - Aka Abramsverse Star Trek. My personal opinion is that this was a great entry to the movie series. Had a heck of a time watching the movie twice in theaters. Probably the movie to break the Star Trek Theory/Curse of movies.

Comicron 1. …Yeah, it has a good ring to it. Also, I really like how Liz laughed a bit after Harvey said “booze.”
I agree that “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” isn’t the best of the 11 Star Trek films, but I actually started liking it when I entered high school, and I have the Director’s Edition DVD.
5:03- I guess I Should tell my graphic novel copy of “Transformers: The Animated Movie” the same thing.
8:52- This scene was actually added into both the TV edition and director’s edition of the movie.
9:37- Thank you for saying that, Lewis. Speaking as a Star Wars fan, I really appreciate that. =)
You have some really good jokes in this episode. I lol’d to the Power Rangers joke, and I was wondering if you were gonna show Transformers on that one part.
I agree with your statement about the Star Fleet uniforms. Also, the ones from the first film were a pair of detailed long underwear with attached shoes and no bathroom zippers.

There are a ton of symbols with no feelings or emotions connected to them at all, after all letters and numbers are just symbols, the number 3 doesn't mean any kind of emotion like anger or fear it's just 3 it's purely logical and has no emotional background.
-
04.19.2011 - 00:51 | Linkara
Depends on how the number is presented. For example, the American flag has 50 starts on it in reflection of the number of states it has, giving meaning that all 50 are together and united and while separate are also equal.
If it's just a number 3, then you have to ask WHY the number 3 was chosen, what was the significance behind it, and why, then, is it being used as a symbol to represent something?
-
04.19.2011 - 02:09 | trlkly
Plus, it's presented as an award. What is the logical purpose of such, when you already know what you've achieved? Merely being told by one perfectly logical person that you are also a perfectly logical person should be enough.
But that's the thing. The whole Kolinahr, like other deification of perfect logic, is actually an emotional concept. These people desire to be logical, and desire is an emotion. There's nothing logical about assuming behaving perfectly logically is superior.
The Vulcans are like Data: they have emotions but do not recognize them.
-
04.19.2011 - 23:48 | kalinka64
To be fair, the Vulcans have a thing for ritual and custom.
They've always been more "logical" in a stoic sense rather than in a machine sense, more of a 'reason over emotion' than a 'there are are only numbers' sense. So they do have room for esoteric things and beauty in their society. After all, they ultimately have emotions and feelings, they just try to clear their minds of them as much as possible when making decisions and performing actions, and highly value order and structure over freedom and passion.

Considering it's called "The Slow Motion Picture" or "The Motionless Picture"...
Oh, and that little bit that had the crew member saying how Decker would be devastated was indeed in the movie. I know it well enough that every line is pretty much verbatim.
The Director's Cut is a marginally better film. They cut down on the gas-cloud-acid-trip sequence a lot and added a full exterior SFX shot of V'Ger. The five minute Enterprise exterior tour? A thank you to the fans.
And I heartily recommend picking up "Ilia's Theme" from the soundtrack.
Anyway, entertaining review. I'm not quite as much the Star Trek geek that Linkara is, but pretty close. :D

As always, great review Linkara. I myself prefer the comic over the movie, mostly due to the fact that it takes a heck of a lot less time time tell the same story recycled from "The Changeling".
And if you didn't already know about it, you should check out the "Star Trek: The Complete Comic Book Collection" DVD-ROM set. It contains every Trek from 1967-2002 (including all the movie editions).

2001 a space odyssey was an art film that was meant to have the viewer ponder the mysteries of existence, where Star Trek:TMP was supposed to be a revival of the franchise which almost failed. Star Wars is what those movies should have been: action, close-ups of big ships as they pass by, and a decent story.

I do like that "FRIENDS" is bolded-
Do you really need to be entering a Captain's log *during* the crisis? Okay, I understand maybe there might not be a later, but I mean priorities man! Doesn't Enterprise have a little black box?
And is this really our best strategy when confronting a giant ship zapping moving cloud? Send a ship up there and start zapping at it?
Dang Spock, couldn't you just try *asking* for a space suit? Or like, steal one from the laundry room?
Evil Ancient Egyptian pyramids? My mind went to good ol Pyramid Head...
That has bugged me a lot too. Without emotion, you have no ambition. You might have survival instincts, but even wanting to live over just sitting and waiting for the inevitable is a preference. Fear of death is a pretense of knowledge. And an emotion.
Star Trek is still kind of foreign to me, but no more foreign than a comic I am unfamiliar with, so that's pretty normal. Despite this, I respect that Star Trek has a timeless and devoted fanbase, and while I am currently too ignorant to understand this, being a geek myself, I respect it. Plus, it's entertaining watching a geek like yourself explain everything and show your love for your fandom. Not to mention your classic Trek impersonations, give these Trek comics a unique feel from your usual comic fare.
I figured you were changing uniforms to avoid the Red Shirt curse.
I dunno, I'd figure a symbol of total logic'd be an abacus or calculator or something.

Star Trek # 1 was written about two years after TWOK was released, and a few weeks before TSFS. It has continuity errors because of a lack of communication between Paramount and Marvel. Linkara explains that in the video for that issue. also I believe that TWOK was adapted about two years ago by IDW comics.

Capt.'s log: start date 1257. We continue our voyages of the starship comics con three, and continue to exploit the vast receives the terrible comics, to boldly go where only few reviewers dare to go, on top of the fourth wall!
Starting Star Trek music!
PS: number five, after all it was written by James T Kirk which means it's awesome by that standard alone!(Note the sarcasm in my voice, wait you can't do that this is typing)

The movie is only good if you enjoy the music because there is not much else, and it was also better with the director's cut.
The novelization by Alan Dean Foster (under the pseudonym of Gene Roddenberry) does explain a few more things about V'Ger which helps the story along.
If anyone has read the "Shatnerverse," know this: THE BORG HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS MOVIE WHATSOEVER. THOSE BOOKS ARE CONSIDERED NON-CANON BY STAR TREK FANS, THEREFORE IRRELEVANT.

You're right. GR himself said the only cannon are the Live action TV shows and movies. Everybody knows the REAL origin of the Borg.
-Facebook combined with NASA sent a signal to the Delta Quadrant that teaches people how to build a social network. It reached a Federation type organization that spans a few star clusters recieves the signal and makes a Social Network called Borg Collective. Unfortunatley the Aliens became overly-innovative and took it too far.
