You, sir Bullderdash, have won an internet.

Seriously, good review by Linkara - Spawn is awesome, and his first outing got a very fair treatment here. I always figured the webs around his memories of his wife were to reflect the AGE of those memories, myself. It's one of the subtle things that put Todd McFarlane on the level he's on.

Spawn is awesome and so is this review.

    - No '90s Kid doing commentary on Spawn? Gotta admit, kinda shocked in that area. Guess he's too busy working on his Cobain resurrection.

    - Also, this & the Tandy review were surprisingly light on clips, with two each. Not really a complaint, but it just seems odd...Guess there weren't a lot of opportunities.

    - I count no less than 3 mentions of Youngblood in the comic. They really thought it would be the wave of the future, didn't they? Ah, such misguided optimism.

    - Spawn's cape: Defying logic in countless ways since 1992!

    - Trust me, you are better off having forgotten the Spawn movie. Just five minutes of John Leguizamo in a fat suit, & you will actually have thoughts of begging for the wit & wisdom of Mr. Freeze.

Overall, one good & intriguing review! Can't wait to see what's next, especially with that Lady Gaga comic on the schedule (sounds much better than a Robert Pattinson comic, at least)...I smell a chance for Todd to get his shot again...

About the cape - to be perfectly fair to McFarlane, the cape probably WOULD wrap around the pole as shown (if it was blowing around anyway), and if Spawn moved away, the cape would probably just unwrap. It's not like it's tied to the pole or anything.

I know this sounds a little like Douchey McNitpick and Linkara was just doing the bit for comedy's sake, but I just wanted to give credit where it was due...
  • SlyDante
    avatar
True indeed, but I was thinking more of the varying size of the cape, the complexity of it, the way it moves as though it's almost alive...Which, according to a comment further down, it actually IS (what the...?)...That is just some bizarre clothing right there. o_O

(Though that fashion critic was wrong, it still looks kinda cool.)

Loved the review...I remember seeing a small scene from the movie and the Clown scared the crap out of me. Though, I don't think they had him die and forget about his wife as I recall.
  • Asuka Soryu
    avatar
Considering his costume was made in hell by demons, it doesn't seem odd that it's alive.
  • BooRat
    avatar
I find it funny that the reason the cape wasn't used as much in the Spawn movie was because even MacFarlane thought he'd trip over it in the movie!
  • ladydiskette  - A Lady Gaga comic?
    avatar
Please tell me you are joking O____o

Is it one where she makes a cameo like that Spider-man comic with Obama, or is this a whole comic that revolves around her?

I am.....too scared to find out.

the spawn movie was WEIRD. this comic just kinda strange.
  • JRodHacker  - how weird?

I never saw the movie, but I thought the comics were kinda cool. Not as cool as other comics I read, but still cool!

I want to see opinions on the HBO animated series. Anyone watch that awesomeness? Hell, yeah!
  • Drake666
    avatar
That animated series was AWESOME ! Dark, grim and violent, but, still they tried to show us real emotion ; think about the little girl, the wife, the best friend, the old grandma (damn, that was a intense scene).

The VIOLATOR is a pretty disgusting character, but that's the while point. It comes from HELL ! This is not suppose to be a pretty place.

I forgot : the "War versus Heaven" thing they started... wow... all those "angel", freaking awesome.

The only problem is CrapySackWorld Trope is always a bit hard to swallow... Sometimes, it's too much :(

BTW, good review Linkara, you're right, this comic... doesn't suck :) (kinda short, though)
  • SomeRandomGeek

I got to watch that series again. I definitely remembering it being awesome and lots of violence, sex and nudity. Some video stores would put The HBO series in the anime section despite being American made, I bet, because of the mature content. Also, Keith David voiced Spawn. It worth seeing the series just for that.

I'd enjoy the film but I can't say its a good movie.

Great review. I love it when it's the to the point, funny, yet still not a bad comic. Hard to do good comedy with decent (not bad) material. Very big props to you Linkara.
  • Mithian
Oh god. I must admit i was interested in spwan as a youngster. But now. . .
  • Yeahno
You didn't watch the actual review, did you?
  • TheWebHeadSpiderMan

Y're totally not saying yer own opinion. You changed because when Linkara said what he thinks, you changed yer mind. Although it doesn't seem like you watched this review at all.
  • TheWebHeadSpiderMan

Another thing. Spawn is one of the most popular comic book characters ever. So don't say like y're emberassed. By saying "Oh god I liked Spawn as kid". Kids aren't even supposed to read this ((not that I care.)) But it's so obvious y're just saying this to fit in. Which y're not. Saying that you don't like spawn, is not fitting in.

Spawn was the only Image Comics character I was familiar to before This show came to existence, and I think that’s thanks to the 1997 film which looks cool, and the story is easy to follow along. It’s also been long ago since I saw it. BTW, I think Martin Sheen’s beard makes him look more intimidating.

3:59- It’s probably a Film Brain type symbolism saying that Spawn is the Batman of Image, but that’s just me. =)

5:17- And as you said, “He didn’t do that just for cash, …though it DID help.”

I really love that heart joke, even if it didn’t involve Ma-Ti.

9:16- It may be webbing, but it might also be cracks on a mirror which might mean Spawn is trying to reflect on his past life. (Once again, just me.)

I also agree that Spawn #1 is just okay. The premise is good, it’s easy to follow, and it’s an origin story (which is what most Image Comics ignore for 1st issues, because they think it belongs in #0 comics).

Looking forward to next week when you review X-Force #1.

I would have thought a joke about the dangers of capes from The Incredible would have been good during the E! part, oh well...

And I agree whoever said '90s should have appeared. Then again next week is a Liefeld comic... so I guess we should expect him next week.

When I was a kid I sadly fell into Spawn-A-Mania for a while, looking back on it I have to wonder what the hell was I thinking?

    Great video Lewis! :D

I used to be a major Spawn fan myself. Slowly I began to not be as interested in it after issue 100, things just got too strange for me. I still think Spawn is an awesome character and is a fond comic book hero of mine, I merely just stopped following his adventures to the point even if I wanted to get back into it I've got a lot of ground to cover.

However credit has to be given that out of a lot of Images starting books, Spawn did not suck, and the character and the series did earn it's "top selling comic" status very well. Spawn was something else, and it made MacFarlene damn rich, and was part of the Image susccess story, without the title I doubt Image would have gotten as big as it did.

As for the upcomming Batman/Spawn review; I'm looking forward to it, both Linkara's opinion of the comic and to see if my own opinion of the comic when I originally read it holds up.

I will admit, I LOVED Spawn when I was on Highschool. One of my first attempts to make a comic was a blatant rip off that I called The Black Skull.

I kinda gave up with it during the Armaggedon arc, but overall, Spawn will be something that I look with fondness when I look back to that XTREME dork that I was back then...
  • snakes3425
Batman-Spawn War Devil was a better crossover then the one Frank Miller was involved with

Also I have to ask why why did you try to connect Spawn with Youngblood, for starters Spawn is a great character where as Youngblood is a confusing mess
  • Rurik
    avatar
Might have something to do with the fact that the comic tries to connect itself to Youngblood, just a thought.
  • BooRat
    avatar
That was the one thing I hated about the spawn comics was every time I'd pick up the next issue there'd always be an editor's note saying if you want to know what (blah, blah) is talking about or what happened here read YoungBlood #(this or that)!
  • wariofan14  - Batman-Spawn
    avatar
Funny you say the crossover with batman and spawn, cause before that was a Batman-Judge Dredd crossover and a Batman-The Mask crossover (where the joker puts on The Mask) called Joker/Mask, they are really worth a read, might not be AT4W material, probably is, but it's still worth a read.

The cloak and the entire outfit is actually a living thing. It's name is Leetha and it's awesome. So when the cape wrapped around the pole it's more like a human wrapping a hand around the pole next to them than anything else and mentioning the cape is more foreshadowing than anything else.
  • khadgar64
Isn't the whole "cape" thing meant to be that the suit is symbolising him being tormented by hell while on earth (kinda like the cenobites in Clive Barker's works) and the cape being made out of his blood or something?
  • TheCooper

I freaken love Spawn though has anyone ever realized how small the characters hips are?

Here's a concept: the hero attempts to save a woman from being robbed/raped, but instead she ends up saving him with like a taser or a can of mace. Or maybe a real mace. Maize?

Also, if you're looking for ideas for a theme month or something like that, might I suggest weird team-ups or crossovers?
  • jjflash
"Also, if you're looking for ideas for a theme month or something like that, might I suggest weird team-ups or crossovers?"

First one I would recommend? Franklin Richards and Aunt May team up to fight Galactus.

    I'm not kidding.

The movie sucked. If you ever get asked to help do a review for it... basically, RUN.

The animated series, on the other hand, actually did a good job for the first two seasons. It started getting silly after that.

Wow, those first couple seconds just made me want to reference Mike Patton as The Darkness and the eighteenth time I died...

Okay. I know next to nothing about Spawn. Those opening bits seemed a bit bland, but a guy who fell off a building only to find his heart stuffed in his mouth is wicked win.

Wait, so, he loses his memories, but in exchange gets super powers and a nifty costume? That's.. unusual. Well, it could be worse, at least he didn't lose his marriage.. Or, wait, maybe he did... Damn you Mephisto! Still, even this is better than that cause he's at least aware and able to do something about it..

When did Linkara rescue a chick and appear badass? I do not recall this, I would like to experience that.

This actually made me curious about Spawn. It's not nearly as dark and goth as I expected it to be.
  • Rurik

He's rescued Liz once or twice, though I think she saves his ass more often than the other way around.

Linkara may not be talking about himself in the show. He may be talking about one of his online comics. He used to write those, and maybe still does.

I think that might have been a reference to Lightbringer, which had a bit of a rocky start.

Seriously, you say at the start of the review that we're pretending it's 1992 and you DON'T bring in '90s Kid? What happened?!

Also, given that Spawn can't remember his wife's eye color despite having seen her face constantly, I worry that she's suffering from Youngblood's Disease.
  • casualruffian
    avatar
That was my immediate thought when Linkara brought up the eye color thing. Truly, Youngblood's disease affects the lives of so many.
  • Psychopath
    avatar
It's alright Pinky, I'll give you the low down.

Al Simmons, the main character, was a government trained and employed assassin who was eventually betrayed and killed by his partner Chapel. Jason Wyne, their employers, had this done for, rather unknown reasons.

Al Simmons promptly went to hell, was suited to become a Hell Spawn; a ranking officer in hells army and was sent back to Earth for training. With him is the Violater, AKA the Clown who acts as Al Simmons instructer in becoming evil.

Spawns story is about revelation and redemption, regaining his humanity lost to his acts of savagry. You see, he isn't the "hero" right away, his story is all about an anti-hero becoming a real hero as the conflict between hell and heaven rage on.

All I could think about when you mentioned the fashion designer complaining about the cape was Edna from The Incredibles.

Eh it was OK he should've done issue 2 instead the violator fight was pretty good.

Me I had all the tpbs up untill vol. 9 where Cy-Gor was released and I haven't read past that in years but it's mostly because the Spawn Tpbs are hard to find even on Ebay!
  • Minion of Yahtzee  - What do you know?

An early image character that is actually salvageable? Who would have guessed? Good review and I can't wait for the reviews of Spawn/Batman written by Frank Miller and also (of course written by Miller again) All-Star Bizarro Duke Nukem and Dick Greyson age twelve #3-4.
