At 9:20, "John Goodman" looks more like Jay Leno. IMO.

    Great review Linkara.
  • Transformers03
Batman is awesome. Great Review Linkarra, looking forward for the other secret origin story.

If you can find one, could you do the Origin of Dr. Strange or Captain Marvel?
    Great Review BTW SHAZAM!!!!

Great video Linkara! Hey I have a request, can you review the 16-page comic book that came with the trendmasters Godzilla action figures?
  • WerewolfRiver
...or mabey you could do RoboCop vs. the Terminator, if you think that is a bad comic that is.

Also, I'm looking forward to you looping the "You'd never know" part along with the intro. Least, I think thats what you should do.
  • Andy Frogman  - Nicely done!

Another great video man! It would be interesting in videos on origin stories to compare a lot of the different interpretations, but I guess there's only so much you can do in the time limit. Either way, much enjoyable!

One question though, where is the musical scene from at the end?
  • MarieNomad
That came from 'Batman Beyond'. It's the episode featuring Old Bruce Wayne celebrating a birthday. It's an awesome episode.

But it is disgusting when Ra's Al Ghul kisses Bruce...IN THE MOUTH!!! Eww...
  • Rockabore
    avatar
    [SPOILER ALERT!!!]

Yeah, though he was in Talia's body, and was trying to keep that whole thing a secret and hopefully only did it to go along with the a facade. But who knows, Ra's has shown to have a bit of a man crush on Bruce.
  • batfan  - Darnit, I was ninja'd.
    avatar
^^^That's from Batman Beyond. I wish Linkara had shown the rest of the scene, which reveals that it was a play that Terry had taken Old Bruce to for his birthday. Bruce's reaction is priceless too. You get the sense that he spent his entire life trying so hard to be taken seriously as a man scaring bad guys by dressing up like a bat; unfortunately, it doesn't take much to point out the inherent sillyness of it all. I almost feel sorry for the guy, really. It's like you go on this decades long crusade against evil establishing yourself as the biggest badass to ever stalk the night, and all it takes is one hobo name Crazy Steve to ruin your reputation for years.

    Terry : Come on, it's schway !

    Bruce : It's schwarbage.

The musical scene is from a batman beyond episode called "out of the past" quite an interesting episode featuring Thalia (Rhas' a ghul's daughter)

A very subdued opening for what would become one of the most widely known comic book heroes of our time.

Could you imagine if they never changed from that original red tights design? It just seems to silly and would likely not have made it. We would never have gotten to see a movie that featured a Bat-Credit Card.

Of course, a completely silly looking costume worked out okay for the original Green Lantern.
  • Blues  - disagree
I mean, check out daredevil. He's a different take on the concept and he's pretty cool sometimes.

I think the bigger problem with the original concept was the weak domino mask. So many people had and it wouldn't have been unique, just bland.

Y’know, I’m kind of curious if anyone reading this story in 1939 was actually surprised by the revelation at the end that Bruce Wayne is Batm… I mean… “The Bat-Man.” As you mentioned, Bruce Wayne practically spends the whole issue trying his very hardest not to shout “I’m Batman!”
  • MarieNomad
This is a fun review. Hee hee... I loved how that Linkara kept on saying 'I'm Batman'. I couldn't help but wonder if that guy was the real Joker since he fell in acid. Not sure.
  • ToonNinja

I couldn't help but feel a bit of a Shortpacked influence with the "I'm Batman" bits.

    "... I'm Batman."
  • brick mooncode
    avatar
I'm guessing that back then, putting words and phrases in quotes didn't suggest a mocking tone, judging by how Batman keeps getting called "Bat-Man," and how that one guy calls the chair the "chair."
  • Dark Pascual

    The Goddamn Batman!

The only character cooler (to me) is Green Lantern (either Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner).
  • ZeldaTheSwordsman
Now taking bets on what the next one will be.
    Wonder Woman?
    Green Lantern?
    The X-Men?
  • batfan  - It may or may not be one of those three

^The schedule's been up on his Blip account for over a month now, but if you really don't know what's next I won't spoil it.

It's like how I can't tell if Doug re-uses old footage of his little head-spin when he introduces his NC episodes.
It's always weird to me when we see the first appearances of these famous characters coming in such oddly numbered issues. Who would've thought that a #27 would turn into something so grand?
    Anyway, nice episode, as usual.

    PS: Carbon monoxide is invisible.
    I know. I'm pedantic.

Loved the references to past episodes involving Batman, though I have to say my favorite had to be the reference to the bee weapon.

Of course it couldn't be a Batman episode with out "The Ambiguously Gay Duo!"
  • SpeedyEric

A deadly gay weapon. Gays, my god. =P

Note: I have nothing against the gay community.

Great video! Although using the Batman voice was a little annoying near the end, but still enjoyable.

BTW, there was actually going to be a Batman musical. Jim Steinman (composer and writer for a majority Meatloaf's albums, as well as a great artist himself) was writing a musical for Batman at one point. In fact, one of the songs he wrote for it, Seize the Night, can be heard in Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose. Just thought of putting that out there.
  • Reviel
    avatar
Though right now this song is used in "Dance of the Vampires" or at least the German version, since the broadway production was just... awful!
Anyway, if there ever will be a Batman musical, I'm pretty sure Steinman is the right man for the job. Plus he already has experience with songs for bat-like creatures. ;)

The title card is hilarious. Your getting choke by Batman for mistaking him for Crazy Steve.
  • SpeedyEric
    avatar
At least he's not getting choked by Superman for mistaking him for Bearded Idiot.
  • August M.

He wouldn't be choked, his head would have burst like a pimple.

I first heard of Bob Kane from the openning credits of the Tim Burton films and "Mask of the Phantasm." Weird, huh?

3:50- Just like the first film, but we see the killing of his parents in the flashback.

6:17- You got that right, dude. Just look how I'm sporting my hat in my profile photo. B)

7:29- In speaking of gloves, "Bat-Man" wasn't wearing any in the next issue. ...Uh, fingerprints?

9:50- YAY, THE JOKE RETURNS! =D

13:27- As I stated in my comment from last week's episode, I have this book.

15:14- Suck of THAT, Insano and Linksano.

I love the Origin of Batman, especially in "Batman Begins."
  • MarcusWilliams
I actually got this comic in a combo pack with the Dark Knight; definitely feels dated, lol
  • Kayley
    avatar
As a huge fan of Batman, this was sincerely awesome. Thanks for the laugh tonight, Linkara, I needed it!
And as soon as I saw the "superstitious, cowardly lot" line in the comic, I immediately thought of the Batman Beyond episode.

I love your Batman voice Linkara. It makes me giggle every time I hear it. Secret Origins Month is quickly becoming my favorite month. ^^

It is amazing how far Batman has come over the year.
  • Jezzy54  - Batman Origin
    avatar
Batman: Year One is a pretty good retelling of the origin story, but it would have been better if it was extended to actually include the Joker and if Catwoman wasn't a prostitute. Batman Begins is pretty much the best version.
  • SoujiSeta
I will definitely give you prostitute Catwoman, but I liked that The Joker wasn't included. It's Batmans beginning, his first time out and struggling with the consequences, tossing in The Joker would have been a bad idea and just felt forced for the sake of having him appear.

I realize you mean The Jokers origin, but I think that kind of thing should be saved for a Batman that's already been fighting for a year or so.
  • TragicGuineaPig
    avatar
Pretty much, ALL Frank Miller's women are prostitutes. Even the ones that aren't professionally, like Vickie Vale: she's basically a prostitute who doesn't get paid in cash.
  • RollingThunder
Kinda rip-off? Finger acknowledged himself that The Shadow was the inspiration for Batman and the story WAS a rip-off.

I actually have a book that has paintings of various DC Heroes origin stories. In it are paintings that are taken EXACTLY from that origin story issue. Makes me feel all nostalgic inside.
