09.14.2010 - 14:12 | metalmadyeah, he should actually keep this version, i know that some people may prefer the usual one, but i really like this one! you could keep most of the origional imagery and just modify it here and there to fit the pace of the version used in this opening
also, i thought it was really awesome that almost the entire site contributed to the closing theme for my personal favorite reviewer's 100th video.

this was an amazing episode and in my opinion one of your best

If all the TGWTG team put together a band and released a CD or something of that nature, I would be one of the first to get it. That was one of the best parts of the entire video. Great job everyone. =D
Seriously though, CONGRADULATIONS LINKARA. XD
It's been a good ride this part 100 episodes and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that I'm excited to see another 100, as long as you still have fun doing it. This was a great way to celebrate it, because this comic, of course, sucks.
Also, that different version of your theme at the beginning was pretty awesome. I definitely wouldn't mind if that played at the start of every one of your videos, although the regular version is also great. Either way, awesome job. As always, keep up your great work Linkara. =)

09.13.2010 - 18:46 | NeverpleasedWhy is Sonic grinning like a PIMP daddy when hugging two children?
Must be the games messing with his head. After all when you star in a (bad) game with a love sub story between a blue hedgehog and an under aged girl your perception is screwed quite thoroughly.

OH HELL YES. Brilliant! XD THANK YOU, man! This issue has been pure shit for so long, it's nice to see it get ripped a new one, royally.
The guy who wrote it also drew it, aside from the fact that those are his son and niece. I don't think you touched on that fact. Comic-wise, yeah, this is the epitome of self-insert fan fiction.
And Steve is holding a remote control if you look closely. Isn't that great? SO much effort put in to this thing. You can really tell.
Sorry if I'm a little excitable. You have a fan for life now. :shy:
Did you ever get around to checking out SatAM? I'd be interested to hear what you think of that, too. =)

...What kind of things would Robotnik want from Sally and not Tails or the walrus...
And you're all now thinking about it. Have fun with that. My work continues o.o
I also don't know what's worse, Linkara's power rangers toys, or the fact I got all those references...(Why yes I did toss one of my own).
Happy 100! *ritualistically sacrifices an Archie comic on the altar*

Congratulations on making it to 100 episodes, Linkara! That's awesome! Keep them coming, AT4W is a very good review show, and I always look forward to see what you have to say about crappy comics!
I LOVED the "Sliders" reference too! I didn't know that many people knew about that show to tell you the truth. I thought I was in a small minority there!

09.13.2010 - 20:47 | Pye Like EyeGood 100th episode, and very nice choice of a comic. I loved the singing thing at the end.
Although I was hoping for some more plot...
Where can I find the version of the theme song you used at the beginning?

Yes, Sonic Live is bad; it's deservedly reviled by everyone who knows about it. Linkara made a great choice of what to review. But it should also be noted, that the comic was also a one-shot special. It is in no way representative of the Archie Sonic comic as a whole. The main series is in no way "bad" as it is "strange", and has over the years evolved to be an entirely different beast from the Sega version of the mascot.
So for anybody interested in further looking into the comic after this review, here's Archie Sonic the Hedgehog condensed into three "eras":
The first era, the "Gallagher Era", named for the main writer at the time, Mike Gallagher. This was back when everyone who worked on it was convinced it wouldn't last very long. Much its stories and settings borrowed liberally from the games, Adventures of Sonic and SatAM. Gallagher and his main artist at the time, Dave Manak, worked previously on humor-driven liscensed comics, like ALF and Rocky & Bullwinkle. Because of that, many Gallagher/Manak stories were driven by bad puns, sight gags and Marx Bros.-style slapstick humor. This "era" is not particularly memorable, as previously stated all involved were convinced Sonic wouldn't last long, but some key groundwork for the series' future was laid here. Gallagher is a capable writer when the situation needs him to be, though, as anyone who's read "Mecha Madness" can attest, and Gallagher still looks back on his Sonic run fondly.
The second and most famous (infamous) era, the "Penders Era", named for the writer most associated with the book, Ken Penders. When it became obvious at around issue #30 that the SatAM cartoon was what most fans wanted the comic to follow, Ken Penders took the reigns and transitioned the comic away from slapstick and more towards becoming an ongoing action/adventure comic. Story arcs focused on rescuing King Acorn's body and mind from exile, the introduction of other Freedom Fighter groups, and the escalation in conflict between Sonic and Robotnik. This was all happening amidst the comic collapse of the 1990s, the SatAM cartoon's cancellation, and Sega's struggles during their transition from Genesis to Saturn. So prospects on the comic's future were grim. This future "outlook" led to the writing of the 4-part "Endgame" arc, with Issue #50 serving as a potential finale.
Well, #50 happened, and the comic surprised everyone by actually *growing* in popularity, and on it went for another 100 issues with Ken leading much of the way.
In that time, Ken's run experienced numerous creative peaks and valleys (some would say deep valleys), and a bevy of different artists and co-writers. Ken's time on the book was so long that it probably requires its own recap, but the key thing to know is: Nearly everything the comic is today, both the good and the bad largely ca...

09.13.2010 - 22:20 | NCscriticwhat the hell is all this about bad art? what "era" are you referring to when you say "bad art" it's just cartoony! what, do you want it to look realistic or something? they're anthropomorphic animals! if they looked realistic, that would be creepy and stupid looking. I like the cartoony look. I think it's more appeasing to the eye than say, Marvel or DC. NO I'm not saying the realistic art style of Marvel or DC is bad, It's fine, but I'm more attracted to the big-headed, bug-eyed cartoony look of Archie Sonic. it's just a cartoon, not "bad". when has Archie Sonic ever had bad art?
and Sonic's eyes are cool looking.

I didn't see the OP mention which era the bad art was in, but I can attest that EVERYTHING in #92 was horrible (basically, the characters in every single panel were directly referenced from previous artists in previous issues. The artist just ripped off better artists, and the result was catastrophic). There was also a bad run during the OP's "Penders era," which I'd like to note is more like the "Penders/Bollers era" since Karl Bollers did a very large majority of the main stories from about issues 51 to 150. When Steven Butler took up the Knuckles backstories and James Fry was found to be unreliable at getting his issues done on time, they hired Ron Lim, who is apparently a professional comic book artist, but ... ugh ... he draws humans okay, but the Sonic cast? Not so well. It's a matter of preference, but I thought it looked god awful.
The last time I remember seeing Ron Lim's art was in 159, after which Tracey Yardley took over, whose style is totally compatible with the Sonic the Hedgehog short, fuzzy animal style.
Anyway, I think if anyone's talking about any era of bad art, it's stuff between ~80 through ~110, when they started alternating artists more often.
I found an image comparing the art styles of every Sonic comic artist since the beginning, though I don't think a lot of them are terribly accurate in representing the artists' run as a whole:
http:// img17.imageshack.us/f/ allsonics01.png/
...Aaaand I'm not finding any examples of Ron's art via Google. Sec, I'll just scan a few pages and upload them myself. Sec...
EDIT: Wow, way off on the issues where they started alternating comic artists. But after 220+ issues and my mind tending to block out the bad ones, my memory's kinda fuzzy.
Note that this is what Princess Sally's original design is supposed to look like:

But anyway, example of Ron's art:
http://i56.tinypic.com/ mt5ac8.jpg
Example of Many Hands' art:

Examples of the talent that has been known to grace the pages:
http://i55.tinypic.com/ 2jcc0a8.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/ 6ejehx.jpg
In comparison, some artists may -not- be all that bad, but it sure looks that way when you get a main story with art like the first two artists' examples and a second story with art like the 2nd batch of examples.
I hope that clarifies things a bit.

09.14.2010 - 09:55 | NCscriticthank you for clarifying that. Yes, the older comics WERE very weird looking. I think I saw this picture of Chaos Knuckles once and it was hideous. I was mainly referring to Tracy Yardley, who is awesome. I'm sorry you didn't get that I mostly meant the current comics.
and @Erinaceus, you said that "Kids don't care that much about continuity or art quality" art quality that made me think you were implying that the art quality was bad, but kids don't care. plus, last episode, Linkara said that one reason the requesting fans gave him for reviewing this series was "bad art" and I guess they too meant issues in the early to mid 100s. sorry I misunderstood.

Precisely. In my opinion, the best Sonic cartoons and comics were the ones that allowed themselves to be silly, like Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic X, and the very early issues of the comic book.
Speaking of Sonic X, since you were curious about it, it was an animated series from Japan in which one of Dr. Robotnik's experiments transports himself, Sonic, and Sonic's friends to the real world. It played a lot off of the "cartoon characters in the real world" kind of humor and, despite what you might hear a lot of critics say, it was pretty good and pretty funny. If anything, it sure worked better than Sonic Live and didn't make Sonic out to be some kind of creepy pedophilic kidnapper!
