Not to mention the first physical appearence, at least that I can think of, of Lord Vyce himself Fluffyman. This was a jam-packed episode and I think it is all the better for it. I knew we would eventually see Ensign, sorry, Lieutenent Monroe here; he was just as awesome as he was in the game.
As for the comic, I agree with you Linkara. It really seems like the creators really didn't know very much about Voyager. They made a lot of mistakes and seriously, why was Tuvok such a complete jerk until the very end? I mean, I know he was pretty jerkish in the game too, but he seems even moreso here.
Ah well, nonetheless, it was a great episode. Quite funny with an ending that really advances our current story. Nice job Linkara. =D

I just recently started watching "next-gen" and you brought up something ive notice on the first episode i watched....why are their no real combat ready personnel?? I know that the federation ships are supposed to more like explorers and diplomats but out of all the dangerous planets they go to you think they would at least have their away-teams wear some sort of body armor.
-
Yeah, that's something that lots of Trek fans find annoying. Especially because Worf, the frakking Chief of Security, is usually the first one to get his ass kicked anytime a hostile alien beams aboard.
The worst was probably the episode "Rascals" where Picard, Guinan, Ro and Keiko get turned into children via a transporter accident and the Enterprise gets taken over five seconds later by a couple of Ferengi in a pair of antique Birds of Prey.
As far as body armor goes, the few times we've seen others wearing armor like that, the phasers just go straight through, so armor is probably useless.

One, this is a good review.
Two... Calling the whole thing a combat training excercise akin to the Kobayashi Maru would actually make sense, given the context. The entire point of this type of excercise is, as you said, a test of character to see how the person deals with a no-win scenario. Which is exactly what our Star Fleet Ensign was dealing with; a Borg attack on all sides, with his primary objective being to disable the Borg through explosions to save the Voyager. Even if that means A) killing your own teammates, and B) sacrificing yourself along with them to achieve that end. It's training to ensure that no matter what, the mission would always be completed, regardless of what sacrifice was needed, or in other words, making the best of your death. Somewhat cruel, but when it's all of your lives and the lives of the crew, or just your own life that has to go, it makes sense to be trained in making the ultimate sacrifice.
... Just wanted to say that.

08.16.2010 - 23:17 | CrunchyRayYou're part right. Except calling a scenario a Kobayashi Maru means that it was designed to be a no-win scenario. The simulation in the comic supposedly had a way to win, it's just that Munro failed. It's not necessarily a no-win scenario just because you may have to sacrifice members of your team.
In the original Kobayashi Maru, the apparent goal was to save the eponymous ship. If you venture into the neutral zone, you get destroyed. If you refuse to enter, the ship is lost with all hands. Either way, you fail. The point was to see how the commander would react if faced with certain death, either of his ship or of the other.

"I am Capt. Linkara of the Green Futon!!! Don't force me to use deadly force!!!"
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
Gotta admit the comic retained one important characteristic of Star Trek: silliness!!! Yeah silliness!!!
I have one thing to say to Lord Vice, "NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER SURRENDER!"

08.16.2010 - 22:47 | Wolfram-And-HartBrilliant review, Linkara. Glad to see we're getting further into the Lord Vyce plot. I was wondering when that would come up again. Can't wait to see where you go with this, especially with Mechakara back in action!
-
08.16.2010 - 22:52 | Rennod ShinjukuSorry, couldn't resist:
Lord Vyce: "Is there anything else you want to do with it?"
MechaKara: " ... there is a distinctive craving for ... cheeseburgers? ... the hell?"

08.16.2010 - 23:00 | KyaStarHaha! Borg saved list! You forgot the Borg children from the end of the voyager series, and the small group of one-shot borg from voyager that were no-longer of the collective, but shared a link between members... man it's been a long time since I've seen that episode... :uhh: But ya. For Voyager, dealing with borg is old hat.
---As for Voyager...I've never really talked to anyone about Voyager outside of my Dad and sister. Is it really considered so low on the Star Trek scale? I mean... once they got rid of Kess things got a lot better... and Janeway is a bad***....
Oh, this was another Great review Linkara! But... now I feel sad about my only true claim to Trek greek-dom. :sigh: I still think Janeway is my favorite captain... I almost don't want to watch that link you posted. I'm afraid my soul might get crushed a little. (we own every episode of Voyager here at my house...)

This comic is equaly as bad at that Star Trek comic you reviewed a year and a half ago. I'm happy that most of the Star Wars comics arn't this bad.
I'm not a game expert either. I have a PS3 and I only have six games for it; I'm planning on buying "Transformers: War for Cybertron."
I haven't really thought of the Borg as zombies until this video. Thanks, Lewis.;)
Nice job on nerding out about the Borg and the rest of Star Trek. I would do the same thing.
Tuvok in this comic seems more like the principal from "iCarly" (the principal is played by the same actor who played Tuvok in Voyager).
13:10- Another example of "show, don't tell."
The Hazard Team fighting the cockroch like aliens just turned Star Trek into Starship Troopers. I think the writers of this comic watched that movie more times than any of the Star Trek incarnations.
May the Forge be with you.
Nice job on the action scene and the scene involving Mechakara and Vyce. I'm already hyped.

08.17.2010 - 19:13 | Pye Like EyeAt least this time the comic wasn't vampiric and didn't try killing him.

Dang, I'm not a StarTrek fan, but I do remember my dad allowing me to watch some episodes with him when I was young. And the Borg scared the crap out of me.
Now, it's those creepy aliens from Deep Space to freak me out. Thank you, comic, for reminding me of that game with those cockroaches. :scared:

I wasn't really aware of Star Trek comics until recently when my buddy lent me Star Trek Countdown! Which is pretty friggen sweet! But that's TNG/New Movie.
Borg energy weapons?! WTF?! And I loved your Kobayashi Maru argument, Linkara! What were they thinking?! I mean, you hit the nail on the head. The Kobayashi Maru is a no-win scenario, so when he doesn't win why would you say he failed. And two more simulations that are more difficult than no-win?! What is that, a double lose scenario?
And the list of people in Star Trek who were saved from assimilation was brilliant! They've done it some many times they should be pros at it, especially ON VOYAGER! Did the people who write this know ANYTHING about Star Trek at all?!
That was an epic ending!
