Wonderful as always Linkara, keep it up you handsome but inept dickweed  Wow, BSc? I had to quit early before I went insane (close enough), but I still have DipHE, 300+ university credits and plan to attend a Scottish or Canadian university for Tox. And I work in a plus-sized ladies shop.

I can see where you're coming from, but a few successful people without college degrees don't change the fact that a lot of people start good careers after going to college. Moreso than those who don't. A guy like Bill Gates had great ideas with some other dudes and they made it big, but most people don't get that sort of thing happening. Instead they go to college. This considered, a comic aimed at the masses, most of which probably do need to go to college to improve their living conditions, should contain this garbage. My question is though who goes to freaking comics to get this sort of information.
-
Here's the thing, Linkara was really just listing off some of the more famous people out there who didn't go to college and were successful on a huge level.
Really, unless the job prerequisites for a position requires a degree, College is, realistically, optional. This is especially the case in a lot of skill trades that don't require 4 years of a variety of classes to get the practical skills needed to fulfill the job.
This isn't to say that College isn't important for various folks. I myself wouldn't be at my current job without the degree I have. At the end of the day, most jobs want to be sure that whomever they're hiring is reliable and capable enough to do the job needed. Sometimes that requires a degree, and sometimes it just requires experience and references (both of which end up becoming more important down the line after you graduate, anyways).
Lastly, one other huge problem with colleges (that Linkara hints at in his closing. ;) ) is that far too many enter college without the financial means to really pay for it then and there, and get stuck in student loans that follow them for the rest of their lives...which is far from what I'd call "improving" their living conditions, myself.
-
I totally agree with the point about student loans, a lot of people do end up having their education become as much a liability as an asset thanks to them. However I feel part of the problem is how people see education is a dedicated stage in their lives. You go to elementary school for 8 years, go to high school for 4, then college for 4 more, then you enter the workforce.
However education shouldn't be seen like that, it should be a life-long endeavour!
If you can't afford the expense up front, then there's nothing stopping you from taking part-time studies while holding a job. By spreading out the costs and working to pay at least some fees upfront, you can easily minimize the debt you acquire along the way.
I'll soon be returning to my education in the coming month. I plan to study Astrophysics (a topic I'm deeply passionate about) and I have my eyes set upon a PhD. I could never afford to do so all at once, but by using that strategy it won't be as much a problem. Sure I'll be like 40 by the time I get my doctorate, but that's why good things come to those who wait! :)

Dear Linkara,
I loved this episode. You are the best at what you do so keep on reviewing bad comics. When you said the evil villian wants to make everyone not want to go to college so he could be the smartest person in the world. Not only is that retarded, but this really shows the effect of a PSA that actually causes someone to do the opposite of what's being told. I bet millions of impressionable teens don't want to go to college after reading this comic. Plus, I think in my personal opinion the guy who wrote this was a dropout. I guess they'll let anybody be a writer these days.
P.S Talking about irony, imagine there was a PSA comic that had hulk fight against steroids, or Spider-Man telling kids not to be obnoxious to their parents. Oh and this is a good one, a PSA where Batman goes to little kids and tells them to report to a police officer when they see a possible criminal.

01.18.2010 - 21:36 | LapisScarabHaha, that's brillant, I'd buy those just for the sheer irony. Loved the review Linkara, the ending was priceless (well, the whole thing was, really).

I just finished my weekly "Development of Education" class for the day, and our discussion about current education really stuck out in my mind during this review.
Yes, college isn't really suited for everyone on Earth, and it should in no way be a barrier to a good life (as you well pointed out several times). The problem, I think, really lies in the fact that current education systems aren't adapting to the rate of the changing world.
We're stuck in the rigid style of previous generations, halted partially by people who think their kids will have the EXACT same education that they did. But they won't! There's no reason to use a broken system repeatedly if it's obviously flawed; it needs to be updated. Oh, and extra long school days won't change the fact that the education isn't effective.
It's people who actually improvise, adapt, and overcome that succeed in today's world, which is what school's need to be doing. All this propaganda about going to college is no good unless you can actually gain the benefits of learning, a task becoming increasingly difficult. I'm very pro-college, but if a student is unable to graduate because the system fails them, there's obviously something that needs to change.
OK, long rant over. Thanks for this week's selection Linkara. It really helped me to put things in a bit more perspective. (And long live English majors!)

This comic really is breathtakingly stupid. I'm a senior in high school and at least half of my friends aren't planning on going to college. They know what they want to do, and it doesn't involve the higher education system. I have to for my chosen job, but half of my friends just want military jobs or other things like that. One is already a bouncer at a bar. You don't need to go to college to be successful. It can help, but it isn't necessary.

01.18.2010 - 20:46 | phantom000"Education is so important you shouldn't let school get in its way"
Samuel Langhorne Clemens A.K.A. Mark Twain.
Counting down from 28? Hmmm, what could this mean and who could it be referring to?
-
Did they get their funding?? Are they OK? WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE KITTENS!!!
Oh, and did the publisher actually think that sort of heavy-handed moralising would actually encourage people to go to college? I'd refuse to apply out of principle.
Yeah...take that shitty comic, you won't get me!!!
P.s. I actually attended college and university and I found the experience deeply rewarding, it certainly doesn't turn you into judgemental fucktards like the Future 5.
