Edit: This is what I get for writing a post before clicking "play". The following is pretty much pointless now, and I've had to change the title of this post. Damn.
I stand by my opinion that the two live action Death Note movies (in particular the first) are the best told stories in the franchise. I read more than half of the manga before I got fed up with it nearly useless second act, and the anime's direction is so over the top as to be unwatchable.
That said, the movies have their over the top moments as well. Specifically the start of the first movie. But on the whole, they tell a better paced, faster moving, and all around more satisfying narrative.
Light in particular shone in this movie. Yes, he is the villain in the series, without doubt. But the film at least portrayed him with some degree of ambiguousness at first. When I showed the movie to my mother, who had no experience with the series, she assumed Light was a hero in the story, and was agreeing with his position, but started becoming confused when he started killing the people who were trying to unmask him. I think that is the mark of a good narrative. Flipping expectations totally around.
The Death Note films are good films. You can like the manga and the anime if you will, as there is a lot to enjoy out of both of them. However, do not disparage the live action version for being the film that it is, instead of a more direct adaptation.
With that said, I will now watch this review and see if this entire post was pointless. :)

I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion on these, I saw a bit of the Death Note movie, but haven't seen any of the others. Oh and I saw there was a Gantz movie-poster in the review... good luck with that one O_o

I don't think Western adaptions of Manga will be as good as some recent super hero flicks: Super heroes have been a HUGE part of our western culture for decades. The actual comic industry has become somewhat of a niche in recent years, but the characters and their basic story are still well-known. Even people who've never read a comic know who Batman or Spider-Man are. So there's a good chance that people working on a super hero movie know about said super hero and might even be fans.
Manga on the other hand has always been a niche (although it might eclipse comics in sales, if it hasn't already). Nobody at Hollywood cares about some Japanese black-and-white comic. They want profit.
And then there's the fact that Marvel has its own studio. Recent Marvel movies are as good as they are because the license owners basically make the movie themselves. You'll be a lot more careful about making a good adaption if it's about YOUR comic, not just about some random license you don't really care about.

-sigh- Dragon Ball Evolution WASN'T THAT BAD! We've all seen worse, with that in mind I'd like to address some things.
1:Pokemon Has a Manga it may have not started out as a Manga before the Anime but their is a Manga nonetheless(though the Movies are based on the Anime...so argument is kinda pointless)
2: I can go on and on about Death Note as to why Light did the things he did so he cannot get unmask(regarding to one of the posters above me)
3: The Original Three Death Note Films are pretty Bad Ass,a semi alternate tale mind you but still a satisfying adaptation.
4: The American Remake of The Death Note Movies....I have nooooooooooooo idea how it will turn out,Shane Black had to fight for the story not be drastically changed...yes WB of America wanted to change the whole story...why I have no god damn clue,so if its horrible Just Blame Warner Brothers and no one else!.

Am I the only one who read "Rookies" at the end of the video? Why do people keep asking about what the next one is gonna be about? It's an awesome series, by the way, so it should be interesting.
Not really my area of expertise, though. Most of my favorite series are adapted from Visual Novels and Light Novels. In my opinion, anything that was originally from a manga tends to suck in some way unless they take enough liberties with the pace and direction.
Although, I've heard great things about the 20th century boys movies. I find it hard to believe, but perhaps it could be better than the manga?

So far, live action adaptations of manga and anime have sucked. Especially if it's american, or even western.
No disrespect to americans in general, but rather to the a-holes of 4kids and the like who come up with this shit, and also make pointless edits to the anime.
I could go on a rant about that, but i will constrict myself this time.
My main point for this bashing of americazation of anime and manga; Dragonball Evolution.
THE MOST WELL KNOWN ANIME IN THE WESTERN WORLD AND IT'S MADE INTO A LIVE F*CKING ACTION MOVIE BY AMERICANS! YOU KNOW IT'S GONNA SUCK AND IT DOES MORE THAT SUCK! IT IS AN ABOMINATION UNTO ANI-MANGA CULTURE!

11.21.2011 - 12:56 | thegirlroamingAwesome to see that you're taking on a new project! Though, if you're going to sit and talk to the camera, it might be more visually interesting if you shine a light on yourself. Right now the picture looks very gray, not a lot of contrast. Just put a lamp behind the camera or something.
Or if you're going for a Todd-in-the-Shadows route, go all the way and make your features completely obscured by something.
Just an idea. Enjoy your reviews! Keep up the good work!
