I've read every officially released volume of the mange and seen all the available anime episodes on crunchyroll. I totally agree with the various anime parodists on YouTube that the opening is the most over-dramatic thing ever conceived. You should check out some of the parody videos of the AoT opening

The best one that I have seen is this one. It's amazing.

Steampunk monster fighting subgenre... Wasn't there a game at E3 that was in that subgenre?

My theory in the reason why the manga caught fire is because of America's current fascination with the zombie apocalypse. Think about it, the titans are really just zombies only 50 ft tall. What's more scary that a horde of zombies? A horde of zombies that are almost invincible and are 50 ft tall. Really, you should be comparing the manga to the TV show/comic The Walking Dead.

My only real problem with the series is the way in which it handles some of its reveals. The colossal and armor titan's just blurt out, "Oh, by the way, that was us." And they revealed the female titan's identity far too quickly. There could have been much more suspense, showing a detective story as the main characters, and readers, try to find clues to their identity. Instead all of that is done in flashbacks. It just felt kind of cheap to me. I am curious to hear their justification for their actions though. I mean, the titans keep trying to eat them as well, so why help push humanity to extinction?

Good show, Nick. I believe you hit the mark right on the head with your explanation of why it's so popular. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was reading a thread on Myanimelist.net, about how Hunter x Hunter is "one of the best shonen ever." and it comes as no surprised that it popped up, because in that week's episode, one of the characters died. It didn't take me long to abandon the thread because it eventually devolved into One Piece not being a good shonen because it's not dark. Essentially, it took the expected turn. Now I've read the manga years before the new anime, and I watch the new anime, so I'm not saying Hunter x Hunter is bad, in fact it's is in my top five shonen along with One Piece and JoJo (which sort of cheats since there are quite a few parts, and while I do love the series, I think part three is particularly meh and part five, directionless though that could be the scanlators fault) and a couple other series, but I digress.

There's actually a side that believes Shingeki no Kyojin is only popular because it has a dark take on things. Of course they neglected to read the manga, and after reading it myself I believe it is a high quality read.

Since we can apparently suggest manga for you to review on Read Right to Left here in the comments, can I suggest Alive - The Final Evolution to you. I think I might have heard you or Chris mention it on WMR though.

    >Attack on Titan is higher than Hunter x Hunter
I don't know how to feel about this.

Slow titans? Fuckers were being taken down by speed walking, frog jumping titans!

EREN TURNS INTO A TITAN!? OMG SPOILERS DROPPED ECT LOL!
    Nah, I'm cool with this.
    >shut up.
    ... okay. ;_;

You forget to mention how shounen crazy Eren is. Like, Gon crazy, where you would sacrifice an arm just to get one good strike in, kind of crazy.

Yes, it has horror elements in it, but I never felt like it was. It's more of a dark depressing action-drama to me.

Finally, I will say this. Fuck editors. Fuck them hard.
They always want to change your shit for "the better profit."
Example? Sailor Moon. Ami was suppose to be a robot, go crazy and be killed. But NOPE! They made the mangaka change that.
  • Mothmouth
It's funny you mention both Hunter x Hunter and Sailor Moon by coincidence, because the mangaka for both happened to be married.

Not sure if you knew that.

When you think about the ranking it kind of makes sense. A lot of people have problems with Hunter x Hunter's art, and if they don't have a problem with that, then there's the clear and glaring problem of how often it goes on break. It's a good series, but unfortunately not a consistently updated one.
  • katwalk
I am surprised the art doesn't bother you because holy shit am I glad I watched the show first because I could not have taken the beginning seriously if i read it first.

The sketchyness is really obviously not just a style choice, it is clearly scribbled half assed shit in some places. The anatomy is horrible not just on the titans. There are broken arms and people with torsos the size of their heads. There seems to be some backwards to yaoi hands syndrome where they are often too small and the faces are really often comically derped out.

Basically the art in the first three or so volumes were so bad I couldn't stop laughing. Maybe it is just because I make a lot of similar fuck ups when drawing it sticks out worse to me? but it is also evident by the fact it gets less bad over time it was not an intentional style choice.

Seriously? Again with the Blip.tv "disable adblock" shit? I HAVE disabled Adblock for ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com . I'm looking at ads for Zombie Pandemic, Tune Up and something in Arabic I can't read. What the fungus is up with Blip?!? Especially when even with completely disabled Adblock, I still don't get any commercials anyway...

Do you want to trade? I'm getting the same 3 Navy Seal Ads over and overandoverandoverandOVER .

It's like cyberpunk meets Shadow of the Colossus. I should check it out.
  • Kiereth  - I really don't enjoy this series.
It might be different when read as a manga - the sketchy artwork did seem effective - but it completely fails as an anime, at least to me.

My main problem with the show is that the titans are set up to be really intimidating but they just look really stupid. There was the moe moe kyun titan in episode five and the mincing titan in episode six that really emphasise this dissonance.

Then there's the art. Coupling the faces with the colours in the anime simply makes for really ugly-looking art. It almost seems as though they should have kept it all colourless.

Finally we have the tone. I do like dark shows - Madoka Magica is one of my favourite anime - but to me the best kind of dark tone is that which is developed from a start point. Here's what I mean: in Attack on Titan, the tone of the setting is dark from day one. There's no let-up, no happy moments, nothing.

Dark tone only really becomes effective when it's contrasted with lighter moments or sections of the narrative. A perfect example of this would be The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer. That manga was really dark - it was the story of the world ending. But it was interlaced with happy moments, where the cast have fun and enjoy being with each other. That's what Titan's lacking for me - there's no lighter moments to make the dark tone feel dark instead of just dreary and boring.

Loved the video, and I hope we see more of your work soon, Y!

While I understand where you're coming from, and can certainly agree with you, I think Shingeki being dark from day one is a means of emphasizing just how bleak it is for humanity in that world. With Madoka Magica you have Madoka just finding out about the whole business; up to that point, she was just a normal high school(?) girl so as she got more involved, things got darker. Shingeki is different from that. While they certainly had a false sense of security inside the walls, humanity knew what type of shitty position they were in. It sort of raises a question. Considering the setting and where the mangaka was going with the plot, would there be any "light element" that wouldn't seem out of place, or make the transition jarring?
  • metazoxan
Really dark, horror type stories aren't for me so I probably won't check this out but I do hope shonen series try more things. A series doesn't have to be dark and gritty to prove itself different.

I read this when you covered it on Weekly Manga Recap and I'm still reading it because I want to know just what the explanation behind the things that are happening is (why did humans transform into titans, why do the traitors do what they do, etc.). People that are looking at it for the characters, I do get emotionally attached to Eren, Mikasa and Armin but they aren't really interesting. The rest is stupid or cannon fodder or both.
Also, the way they handled the reveal about the armored and colossal titan was fucking stupid.

I don't think I can respect anyone who enjoys this because of the human vs. titan action.

So I'd recommend it because it's interesting, but not because it's good.

It's interesting that you recently did Bio Meat for WMR. I really like the action in this one, but on the other hand the only mystery in that series is how stupid people could get.
  • MartinBlue  - Just started watching you.
Interresting show, like how you describe things. Just started watching anime and exploring some manga due to that, going to love the next shows you have i think. would be interresting to see how you handle Girls Und Panzer.

I just could'nt get into this series I read the first two volumes and my reaction was "I can see why perople like this I don't" a solid "meh" for me

Just got a huge boost in respect for Hajime Isayama after watching this vid because as someone working on their own graphic novel (not a manga, as much as I enjoy the Japanese genre of graphic novels I don't aim to mimic it) I hate when author lighten or otherwise change the direction of the story they want to tell because big media giants (like in this Shonen Jump) tell them they won't get anywhere otherwise. Even if Attack on Titan didn't do well sticking his guns is just respecting his own work rather than just writing for others. Its great when you can do something controversial and different and still manage to claim a booming audience :)

Anyway just earlier this week I started to watch the anime adaption of this series and I do plan to read the manga adaption now (since as weird as it sounds I much prefer getting my fictional material from written sources then mindlessly watching it.) So yeah good simple review of it.

I liked the series, but chapter #42 was the last straw, and the giant contradiction to it being "dark" and not "focusing on the shonen"..

Also, now it's just counting down to even more of the "revelations" especially with Mikasa..
  • Verp  - Thanks man

Oh jeez, I've been out of things lately. I hadn't checked Attack on Titan prior to seeing this video because I'd only ever seen the title of the series plastered on some lists without really knowing what it was about. I thought I'd check it *sometime* but not right now because I'm not in the mood to read about a story about attacking one of Saturn's moons.

Now I have to say that this series was MADE for me -- not only do I love the intricate world Isayama's created, I love the characters and I'm perpetually creeped the hell out by the titans. Ever since I was a child, I've seen nightmares where I try to hide from humongous creatures like T.rexes and giant bears that are out there trying to catch and eat me so this manga (and anime) just hits really close to home...
  • Sdjyn
Aaaand this is still my favorite series on this site. Had to re-watch this episode now that I've finally read Attack on Titan, and I really enjoy your perspective on things.
I hadn't really thought of the horror elements of the manga, but I have to agree. I actually flinched when turning the page at one point (in fact, you showed the page in the review - when a titan is advancing up the stairs of a tower). That hasn't happened to me in years.
Also, yes, the opening theme is ridiculously catchy.
  • ninjamaid
Normally this isn't the sort of manga I'd check out, for the same reason I haven't read/watched Game of Thrones; 'anyone can and will die' shows don't really appeal to me. I just get too invested in the characters to want to see them die.

However, this I read because my brother basically said "Oh no, all the main characters are fine, it's really only minor, minor characters that get killed."

Problem: He's primarily an anime fan, rarely reads manga...

    D:

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy this series, and I highly appreciate the aesthetic choices the mangaka made, but now I'm hooked on the antithesis of what I normally read. And I'm terrified of what's going to happen to these characters that I adore.
