I, for one, enjoy magico. I dunno. Yeah, it's pretty cliche, but I can't help but enjoy it. Sue me.
Out of the list, Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa is probably my favorite. Hell, it may be my favorite series in Jump right now (besides maybe Medaka Box). I find it hilarious and the plot drew me in a lot, surprisingly. Unfortunately, it is by Yasuhiro Kanou, author of the also hilarious but cut short Pretty Face and Mx0, so it's probably gonna be canceled before it reaches its conclusion.
Nisekoi. Just fucking Nisekoi. It's awesome. Go read it right goddamn now. The characters are fairly archetypal, but it moves extraordinarily fast for a shonen romance (Kimi no Iru Machi, I'm looking at you). Nice twists, too, beyond the first one about their parents.
Free scanlations can be found at www.batoto.com. Or go directly to the scanlators websites, like Red Hawk Scans (www.redhawkscans.com) for Kagami, magico, and other Shonen Jump series and Imperial Scans (www.imperialscans.com) for Nisekoi. Don't forget to support the original release and the mangakas, buy it if you can!

If I want to learn about Japanese history, I'll play Sengoku Basara, thanks. Now THAT'S good shonen.
I never judge any series by the first episode. Rarely do any start out good. It takes a while for them to gain momentum. If I stopped watching Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds before the Fortune Cup ended, I would be missing out.
The manga with the boy in the mirrors certainly has a unique premise, but, like you, I have to wonders what kind of ideas they can come up with in the long run.
Unfortunately, none of these new shonen manga are the kind I look for. Call it my gamer blood, but my favorite shonen series are always heavy in combat conflicts. Series with a wide variety of different characters that, when they conflict, take advantage of their different talents and abilities to outmatch and out think the other to fulfill their goals. It's that kind of shonen that is so much fun for me to watch. That's practically the reason why all the most popular Shonen Jump series are so popular.
You have conflicts like Shikamaru having to outsmart a man who can't die, Yugi having to come up with a move to beat Slifer the Sky Dragon (or the Winged God of Osiris, if you want to call it that), L having to catch a killer using magic, and Luffy needing to come up with an idea to beat a nigh-unbeatable sand man. It's those kinds of conflicts, with their interesting situations and unique conclusions, that make Shonen my favorite genre.

01.05.2012 - 23:35 | Fenrir MoridinA new YRoT? There goes 15 minutes of sleep XD
Nisekoi and Kurogane sound pretty interesting, but I'll give them at least a year or 2 more, since I like to give weekly series ~100 chapters to prove themselves. Of course, they both seem to rate pretty highly in the rankings, but their meaning is nebulous at best.
As to Magico, that's been doing pretty poorly lately, so it might not last out the year. Plus, Nisekoi seems to overlap somewhat in general premise, so maybe a new favorite of yours is beating down the series you dislike.
Also, I can see why you sounded so disappointed in ST&RS: the premise sounds pretty good, it's just sad the execution is lacking.
Still, a nice episode of YRoT (as they all are)...now I'll go back to fruitless hoping you write more of those reviews about episodes of Pokemon B&W.

These days mangakas seem to put a pinch of extra wish-fulfillment in the romance aspect of shonen series's. It used to be all about how the guy can't work up the courage to fess up and so on and so forth, but lately the relationship is more often just dropped onto him, and the conflict is established in other ways. Namely, in stead of worrying about not getting into a relationship, as they actually do, they still don't get into relationships in the sense that they haven't a clue about what to do with it.
In itself I find the setting a bit (just a bit) more mature. Getting the girl really isn't that relevant a problem as much as what to do with her.

Yeh! It really is disgusting that Japanese people believe they will please teenagers with erotic poses of female body.
Is not like you saw that sort of thing in a superheroe comic book.
Like the new dc relaunch to get new readers, where in the first issue of theses books you see a girl that is obuvious naked whit something covering her part or in a gratuitous sex pose...
I have in my hand here...
Ei
Whait...
I think at least Aquaman don't have a scene like that.
It had...
Batgirl is free of that I had sure.
HA... COME ON!!

I seriously believe Double Arts was one of the manga with the greatest potential I ever read. Too bad Jump is so strict.
I hope for Nisekoi to go on for a long time!

01.06.2012 - 11:38 | KarnotDont bother with Kurogane, its much like Bamboo Blade, only with a spirit. And worse. Seriously, Bamboo Blade is waaaay ahead of this nonsense.

01.06.2012 - 15:13 | Random101Eh, comparing the relationship in Magico to Bakuman is a horrid comparison. Sure they're too embarassed to do anything, but at least they actually agreed to be together. As opposed to undermining themselves with that stupid promise. Granted, I dropped Bakuman ages ago so I'm not aware of the current situation, but from what I heard that relationship only got more bafflingly moronic when she's reluctant to go see the dude when he's sick.
Overall though I hold Magico to be the best of the new series, yes even over Komi Naoshi (Though notably I haven't read Kurogane yet, because generally I avoid sports manga and the premise sounded like Hikaru No Go, albeit with a more interesting focus). Granted partly because I favor Battle Manga, and it's not a particularly huge lead because yes some shit in it is rather stupid. However at least it does some new shit by having a set relationship for once. See the problem with Nisekoi is, despite the amazing One Shot, the published version adds the most retarded generic bullshit to it. It's a similar issue as I had with SWOT, an excellent oneshot, the actual thing however got bogged down with stupidity which I honestly think was only changed to make it sell better.
In Nisekoi's case the asinine childhold friend promise in which he completely forgets what the person looks like with that godawful necklace crap. Bad enough it's contrived as shit, it's also shit you see in all the worst romance manga. Only BARELY saved by the fact that it is indeed shaping up to be the other chick (as most series would have it be the main girl because that's how twists like that have become so standard it's MORE of a twist to have it be the obvious girl). I can only hope this was an editorial mandate or something he chose to add because he was damn sure his series would fail otherwise, because the Komi Naoshi I know would not normally stoop to such horrid contrivances in his series.
Honestly I'm a bit torn with Nisekoi overall, which knocks it down a few pegs. More importantly I'm worried about the longevity of the series, because even if it survives, I can't see the premise staying fresh for long. Tying in with the relationship bullshit in most series, will they or won't they can only really last for so long. Which was honestly why of the oneshot's Komi Naoshi has done (All of which were amazing), Williams was the one I saw with the best chance to actually make it.

To be honest, I think the Nisekoi oneshot was way too awesome for it's own good. The funny faces and the casual display of awesome martial arts are still there, but the plot and the dialogue are difficult to look forward to. I feel that it should've remained a oneshot.
I like Kiri, though. Can't get enough of that ribbon.
And yes, Gintama is a gag manga.
Wait, I'm sorry. My mistake-- Gintama is THE gag manga. The day Hideaki Sorachi stops making manga will be a sad, sad day for mankind.

01.07.2012 - 03:04 | Yatzee27Nisekoi is awesome and done by one of my favorite author/writers, Komi Naoshi. I hope it lasts a long time. Komi deserves a hit. His other works are some of my favorites, especially "Double Arts" and "Personant."

i will check Kurogane...but i can assure you, between 50 to 100...150 max. we will have a evil spirit or something to fight against our hero, a Cerebus Syndrome or something(by the way, your description sounded more like that go series rather than Bleach to me, but i can understand they are similar).
the fake couple manga...i don't think i will read it since the girl sound like a tsundere to me(i hate Tsundere heroiness), IF SHE ISN'T, then yes, i will read it, but i think there are better ways to say a female lead is strong...i am still waiting for a series were the hero is tired of the tsundere girl and punch her. and i don't mean men hitting women, i mean a character FINALLY saying "for god's sake, SHUT UP!".
also, you forgot to count Gintama as Gag series xD(even if they have fights and other things, it is still a gag series)
