So it was about photography? Honestly I never would have guessed. SWOT was the only cancelled manga of 2010 that I read, and I stopped reading it before it was cancelled. It was bad. Ahem, but when I saw pictures of Lock On! I figured it was a battle manga and its title was inconsequential. It definitely sounds better than the mentions of it which regarded it as pure awfulness, I think I'll continue to pass it up though.

08.01.2011 - 04:30 | Random101Geh, I remember this one. Particularly agree about all the molestation going on there. Admittedly though of the two photography based manga I've read with this basic gist, at least this one didn't pretty much directly involve the lead in question with those shenanigans and whatever the hell that bishi-sparkle was.
Regardless though I too held an interest in the characters, I'm not at all sad nor surprised to see it go. SWOT was probably worse all around, I literally dropped it a few chapters in out of boredom. I'm more pissed at the Zoo manga getting canceled though, I was rather fond of that premise.
Then again, none of this compares to the travesty that was the cancellation of Double Arts. That however will be paid for dearly, in time...

08.01.2011 - 05:55 | Sirionwell I stopped reading it before it got canceled so I was not too broken up about it. The only manga that cancellation of really upset me was "double arts" writen and drawn by KOMI Naoshi. I mentioned his name because I also liked his other one-shots would be nice if you would ever review some of his work :).

Did you get to read KIMIIRO FOCUS
it almost seems to have the same thing only fixing the issues but trading in the bad for more ecchi.
It's again about a guy who is just starting to go up in the photography world so it has somewhere to go and the girl lead is sort of the focus for the first few chapters.
Issue is that I don't think the characters are as strong but he does end up getting better pictures of his "Models" by using his perverted nature and good looks to seduce them into various acts they'd normally not wish to do.
I'd tell people it really isn't worth reading but then it totally knows what kind of manga it is so it ends up exploiting their stuff so much it's downright hilarious like when the main character gets a female photographer rival that doesn't have his bishonen skills but does have super peeping skills and a better camera that gets really big when taking girl's photos.

I completely forgotten about this series. I remembered reading this when I first saw it on mangareader.com. Actually, this wasn't the first manga site I found it on since the original I found was on now defunct web site.
I actually liked this series. I thought that the use of photography in this manga was pretty nice. Maybe it's because my uncle is also a photographer and seeing this super shutterbug really peaked my interest. Such a shame that this didn't get that much credit and popularity.

I don't usually drop stuff unless it straight out grosses me out, so I followed this earnestly.
I liked the art quite a bit, and I think brutally honest characters are always fun. I had nothing to expect from it, so I wasn't all that sad that it ended.
To be honest, I never really thought about what went wrong with it for it to get cancelled, and I think I can use this for other series.
All in all, it was an interesting video. Keep them coming.

I read the series before watching this today & I agree with most of it. It's a shame that it only lasted 18 chapters/2 volumes. I do agree it might've gotten drawn out if it was around 100-ish chapters,
but I think it could've done well if it at least lasted a year (50-ish chapters).
It seems that the author wanted to do more, especially with some of the other characters (like the newspaper club member & the guy who was the supposed teacher for Sanada), but couldn't due to the cancellation. I would've liked to see what exactly he had planned for the series, but I guess we'll never know.
Maybe if we're lucky, we can get an OVA/ODA out of this.

Some really promising mangas got cancelled, Lock-On and SWOT were shaping up to be good mangas! While other mangas like Bleach which did end but the author just kept the name and the characters and changed everything else lol

I may not have liked this manga that much, but I DID like the review. It's interesting to see you go on and talk about a mangas themes and messages, and even if some may consider twelve minutes a short episode, I liked it because it felt like you managed to really condense what this story was all about, what flaws and strengths it had, and if it was worth reading over all.
More reviews like these, I say- I for one am DYING to see someone cast some light on more obscure manga. We already get comics, games and anime, but manga is such a sadly untapped medium on this site :(

Right, because its so good to be a pessmistic, vindictive women because Japan seems to have an issue with making good men? This is exactly why I worry about female characters losing the strength that is apparent in compassion and being a gentle person. I seem to be the ONLY person who recognizes it exists, and I find it more interesting than girls who just fight outwardly to show their self-esteem and power; in the least extreme cases, they come across as man-hating and not capable or recognizing male capability. In the most extreme cases, you have what Rumiko Takahashi writes, where ALL the men are apparently bastards for no reason and can't win an argument. Ever.
And let it be said; I don't find sweetness, compassion and gentility to be a weakness. In action-based series, having that mentality is difficult in most situations and its a real chore. In non-action series, they come across as understanding and willing to help others when they need it, which we should all want to do. Yes, the obvious thing is for girls like this to get in trouble, but they can get out themselves or get some help sometimes. As long as they are not liabilities to the plot or the characters, the character should be good.
Either way, let's get to the point. Very good review, Y. It sounds like an...somewhat interesting series, but our main protagonist doesn't seem that helpful when the girl can bash someone in the head and he can take a picture. Being Shonen and all.

(Bad pun is bad, I know. Still, couldn't help myself...)
But you know what song you forgot? "Girls on Film"! Hey, it makes sense.

yay new review X3
It's funny everytime you post a new video i instantly wonder about what you would thin of some of the series I read, especially something like Otomen which is a comedy Shoujo XD Well that and I kind of think a collaboration with Linkara for Karakuri Doji ULTIMO just because one of the creators is Stan Lee would be kind of awesome XD

Sorry if this has already been posted, but it also probably didn't help that the male lead is a blatant rip-off of Agito/Akito from Air Gear, right down to the face, hair style and color, and the eye patch.
I'm not sure how plagiarism is seen in Japan, but here in the US it's seen as very crude and crass, and often taken as an insult to the original creator.

There is one part in the series I wished you covered in the review.
It's the one reason I wanted to see it go on. Sanada is almost a Savant. He's like those people who can remember everything all the time. He also remembers the feelings attached to them.
So he takes pictures to help others remember past memories and the feelings attached to them.
This plot point could have been a greater driver for the story if it had continued.
Maybe review Onnani Master Kurosawa next?

08.02.2011 - 20:15 | BluesI don't think a manga needs a huge world spanning goal. Though I get your point on how that can be more appealing to a larger audience. Though there's always some day to day manga. I mean one of my favourites right now its Yanki kun to megane chan, and Sket Dan.
But the eye powers were very generic. Aside from black cat and the ever more popular naruto that's still running having people with those, it's a generic power set.
I haven't read it but its easy to believe the manga-ka does deserve a second chance based what you said about his characters.

Sehr gut!
Always nice to see updates from you, even if they aren't as frequent as some of the other posters.
I would be interested in perhaps seeing your opinion on Franken Fran sometime. It's has all the campy fun of a B-horror movie and a fair dose of body horror. I wouldn't mind seeing Nana to Kaoru either, but I won't go into details because it might turn you off the series before you even read it. Please give it a chance.
Looking forward to the next update!
