What? No serves that caused the meteor to strike earth and kill the dinosaurs? Count me out!
Seriously, though, this looks awesome, and it's a shame that it hasn't gotten an official translation.
Same goes for Hajime no Ippo. That series is fantastic, and the anime DID make it here (well, the first series, anyway; the second is still being produced in Japan).

One of Benzaie's videos pointed out Rookies, a baseball manga that is quite good and has some real depth (which, considering that it runs in Jump, is saying something as, despite great series like One Piece and Black Cat coming out of Jump, has a lot of bad, shallow series that aren't really worth the time of day), but, unsurprisingly, its unlicensed. So, yeah.
Also, are Eyeshield 21 and Slam Dunk any good? I mean, they can't be any worse than Prince of Tennis, can they?

I'll agree with Charred Newt on that Eyeshield 21 (unfortunately, I as well know little to nothing about Slam Dunk) is a good series, and since a complete stranger on the internet's opinion doesn't mean much, I'll give you a couple reasons why.
The characters are great. Really, they are. The cast is huge and varied. The characterization is clear and, even when there's a set of twins, their personalities are clear cut from each other unlike with a lot of fictional twins out there that are pretty much the same character, only duplicated.
It's comedy that makes fun of its own genre. When two characters about to face off and you see the giant VS. over the panel, you know that the story doesn't take itself too seriously. It knows exactly what it is and has fun with it. However, this doesn't mean that there's no drama or serious moments, which I believe are pulled off well.
Heck, you even meet a female Quarterback (even if she was forced into the club).
Also, there is no miraculous winning streak. At first glance, it seems like it'll be a typical 'underdog triumphs over all' story, but it really isn't. The team starts out sucking and just wins against other suckers until they get better. The fact that this team does, in fact, lose sometimes really adds to the story.
Don't take my word for it though. Check it out... Though I'll warn you that the anime isn't all that good. It gets plagued with fillers and just cuts off, which ticks me off. They cut off right before they get to one of my favorite teams and my favorite arc of all.

02.09.2011 - 01:08 | evagirl77Welcome back! I've missed these reviews, and this one was great as always.
You might be interested to know that while Captain Tsubasa may not have made it to America, it was close. It was release in Spain (I can't speak for any other European countries) under the title Benji y Oliver on kids TV, which makes me think they changed the names of the main characters, but thats uncharacteristic of Spanish-dubbed anime. I've noticed a lot of anime that gets to America shows up in Europe first. I was watching Detective Conan since I was a little kid, and it came out in America as "Case Closed" when I was in high school. I saw Shaman King almost a full year before 4kids bought it, same with DoReMi, and Crayon Shin-Chan. They even dubbed the Doraemon's show and movies, which play today on Spanish Cartoon Network.
But while anime is prevalent, manga in Spain is majorly hard to find. You've got to get it from a big major city, like Madrid or Barcelona, that usually have maybe 3 or 4 shops in the whole city, and they don't get a lot of new stuff unless its super popular. At least here in America, there's a much bigger, and easily found, spread.
You know what's an awesome manga? Addicted to Curry. Just saying if you need any ideas for new reviews.

02.09.2011 - 01:21 | Paper11Y, you're back. We missed you.
Huh, metalocalypse.
ANYWAY, not sure if I'll follow this one myself. The art looks nice, but I'm not into sports manga (or in general) beyond martial arts. This is best illustrated by the fact that the only manga by Takahiko Inoue that I follow is Vagabond. BTW, Vagabond is really, really good.

I know what you mean when it comes to critiquing art. The moment I dread the most when writing a review is that I won't be able to analyze the art as well as I can analyze the story and characters, as well as the overall enjoyment. Despite that, I seem to be getting better at it though. If I had to write a review of Katekyoushi hitman reborn, I could say that at the point where I stopped reading, the art was really muddled and hard to follow. I could also say that despite some people praising Tite Kubo for his art style in bleach, there is a plethora of moments where he doesn't even try to draw backgrounds, and when he does they're nothing that would merit praise. I can also critique as far as character design goes, but outside of that it'd be better to turn to someone who can actually draw.

Y RULER OF TIME TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
*pulls noise maker out of nowhere and spins it with all his might*
Ah, Y Ruler you have to be one of my favorites if not my number one favorite tgwtg team member.
Baby Steps certainly does seem cliche, from the sounds of it there isn't much separating it from your everyday shonen manga besides it being sports and specifically tennis. Though I think the reason you love it so much is because you like tennis and it's such an improvement over the the dreaded Prince of Tennis. Though there is certainly nothing wrong with cliche, cliches are what they are because we like and enjoy them, otherwise they wouldn't have become cliches. Though the fact that Maruo Eichiro is OCD is enough to make me want to pick up this manga, OCD people in movies and tv shows are always hilarious.

I have the same problem. My two favorite series are Franken Fran and Ludwig Kakukmei and they haven't been translated because of some stupid reason, I mean for Pete's sake all that happened was Ludwig hinted at sleeping at a dead chick for one chapter and suddenly it's not good enough to be translated. What's up with that?!
Oh well I'll check out what's translated, but I'll read Baby Steps.
Let us hope that eventually they will finally translate such awesome series.

Pretty much every sports manga, and anime ever released has bombed in America. Hajime No Ippo is considered one of Geneon's biggest failures in sales, and Prince of Tennis and Eyeshield 21 have never really charted. Basically there is little in the way of crossover for sports fans and anime/manga fans. Which is sad because theirs has been some great sports series released.

Just a question though, to anyone who might have read the manga: why does E-chan has a "Marseille" shirt at 5:00? I wonder because that's where I live (http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Marseille)

Happy two year anniversary from me too! I'm so glad to see another review from you, I just rewatched all of your videos the other day and wondered when you'd be posting a new one. :Db
And damn, this sounds like a sports manga I might actually get into. I'm not a huge sports fan so usually I tend to skip them but this sounds fun and relatable. (... Google Chrome's automatic spell check doesn't accept "relatable". o_O)

02.09.2011 - 07:27 | Caspis SinclairHappy Two Year Anniversary!
Have you read/watched "Cross Game"? I've only seen the anime series but I really enjoyed it.
Cross Game focuses on Baseball and takes a more realistic approach than most Shonen sports series would.
That doesn't mean that it is a serious drama, though. There are plenty of funny moments and a fairly large, likable cast of varied characters.
One of the things that I like the most about Cross Game is that the events of each game are difficult to predict. The outcome is fairly obvious (what, does anyone really think that they're going to lose every game?) but the way that they reach the end is often surprising.
I don't know how many volumes have been released but the manga HAS been licensed for English, and you can watch the anime on Hulu (subtitled).
Well, looking forward to more future reviews!

02.09.2011 - 08:32 | epsilon246Interesting review. kinda annoying when a manga you like is hard to find.
Btw have you been keeping up with toriko? If so what do you think now zebra's been introduced?

02.09.2011 - 11:46 | Caspis SinclairBonus Points should be awarded to ArtticWitchica for liking Franken-Fran. :)
It is pretty gruesome at times (actually, pretty much EVERY new release) but Franken Fran does well by having a new moral lesson to be told from each chapter.
