His only problem was that he didn't list the mangas first, for those who want to avoid spolilers, here's a complete list of what to read beforehand:
8. [s]Bleach[/s] not worth it.
7. Yu Yu Hakusho
6. [s]Elfen Leid[/s] depends on how easily offended and forgiving of corny writing you are.
5. [s]Gantz[/s] same as Elfen Leid.
4. [s]Naruto[/s] not worth it.
3. Fullmetal Alchemist
2. Yu Gi Oh 5D's anime, I've always hated the original Yu Gi Oh, but this looks better than that, and at least it's competently animated. Though I've never seen the show, so I can't say if it's worth it.
1. Death Note
-
10.01.2010 - 09:57 | LermontBleach is AWESOME up to the point he saves Rukia, so shut your trap!
-
10.01.2010 - 15:18 | Bastard King
That's like saying that Naruto is good up until the Time Skip, the amount of quality it loses is astronomical.
If you want great shounen, read Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, or Shaman King.* Don't read Naruto or Bleach unless you want to be endlessly disappointed by where the story ends up.
* The manga is much better than the heavily edited, watered down anime, and the mangaka finally gave it a real ending, hooray.

10.03.2010 - 19:18 | GamermageI got to admit, you sir, are somewhat right.
8.Have'nt read the manga, but completely agree.
7.Agree. It's cruel, it's unusual, and I love it! Can't think of a better way for that punk to be tormented for all eternity.
6. :eyebrow: Eh. I haven't read it, so I can't really say for certain. But from the sound of it, I would say that he probably already knew she was going to kill him,and he wanted to to at least free her from his service. Although, I will agree that he did it out of either that or curiousity. But you know what they say about cats and curiousity.
5. :eyebrow: Well,that was weird.
4.WORTH. IT. He friggin' killed Asuma. Poor Korin got hit witha triple whammy: He can't use his powers(no arms or legs),he's stuck there because only Shikamaru's family is allowed on the land he's buried in, and he'll finallly die with others happy he's dead!
3. :shy: Agree.
2. :grr: 120% agree.
1. :eyebrow: Ehhhhhhh,I'm not too sure here. I always saw Light as a tragic antihero.

12.21.2010 - 18:24 | Shinra_BanshouI'm going to disagree with THIS comment instead of dissecting the other one. Shaman King is overrated. It's good, but not incredible - especially after the ending. And it's racist beyond belief. I disagree with pretty much everyone about Naruto: Yes, it grows dull, but it still has its moments and is often better than it was before the time skip. Bleach does become awful, yes.

He listed them as he went along, so, what was the problem again? P.S. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5-Ds was pretty worth it. Bleach, on the other hand, is slightly worth it. As for Elfen Lied and Gantz, well, the anime of EL is worth it, though I can't say the same for the manga, and Gantz is dull and emotionless as all hell, manga or anime.

I was the same. As soon as I saw the title of the list, I knew Light had to be Number 1. There is simply no one else who deserves it more, at least that I know of.
I had never actually seen the manga version and my gosh was it so much better. Seeing the worm writh on the ground like that, begging for his life with absolutely zero pride ...
I also agree about Envy. After all the crap Envy did, seeing him get that comeuppance was so satisfying, even if it must have been really horrible to get burned like that. Even if they tried to make him slightly sympathetic, it still felt good.
Nice list Y. I really hope to see videos from you more often, because I really enjoy seeing your stuff. =D

i kinda disagree with hidan. i like him more than asuma. hidan and kakuzu's conversations are kinda funny. on the other hand, asuma, like 90% of the jonins, is just useless jobber. the only reason we are suppose to care is because shikamaru is popular and needs some screen time. also hidan enjoys pain, so being decapitated and crushed is really not too bad for him.
-
10.01.2010 - 00:36 | bojak90
To each their own. Though for the last part, he would only be in pain for a short while...then he would just sit at the bottom of a filled in pit, unable to see, hear, smell, taste...or feel. He would be unable to inflict harm (well maybe bite his own tongue off)...he would just exist, knowing that one day, without warning, he would die...alone, untended, with no victims...and be forgotten.

10.01.2010 - 02:04 | Bastard King
Hidan was a gigantic scumbag, who attained immortality through ritual killing. Yeah, he's funny, but I'm sure John Wayne Gacy made a lot of people laugh when he went clowning.
Hard to believe that series that have delivered so many anti-climactic and infuriatingly stupid deaths such as Naruto and Bleach can pull out a good one, guess even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
-
10.01.2010 - 00:29 | bojak90
Good list, very well thought out
Elder Toguro- Yeah, it was a shame that he didn't 100% die (I'd have even settled for Kuwabara's attack to have finished him) but considering it was one of Kurama's plants more than made up for it.
Hadin- Was a moment that made me have hope in shippuden. It was a karmic death and it was carried out by Shikamaru (my favorite charater) too bad the series couldn't keep with the quality
Light- YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will admit that after rewatching the anime and rereading some chapters, I'm not as harsh to light as I used to be (the arc where he lost his memory showed that there could have been someone good and showed that L's intentions might not have been as noble as other's thought) But I still get satisfaction from watching that self-important prick die from two things that make it perfect.
1. Matsuda fired the shots. Matsuda was the police officer that Light never considered a risk and even thought that he would go along with him. The fact that Matsuda fired the shots was a blow to Light's ego and completely shattered the belief that he had everything under control and knew all of the people under him.
2. Ryuk killing him. Ryuk told Light Day one that he wouldn't help him directly and that he would be the one to write Light's name down...DAY ONE. Light begging for help and then being shocked about Ryuk's actions showed that Light had completely lost control and the fact he was being taken down by someone he didn't consider a threat showed how ill-prepared he actually was.
The fact that he's reduced to the level of a simpering buffon before he's (in all honesty) mercy-killed when only half an hour before he thought that he would become a god is just deliciously ironic.
-
I agree 100% on Light's death. I was cheering so loud reading the manga and the anime ruined it. I wanted to see him in PAIN! He was pathetic but the manga made it oh so satisfying. At least Matsuda was the one to shoot him. Matsuda was one of my favorite characters other than L and seeing him with the gun was my crowning moment of awesome. I like L but Matsuda lived but still L forever! Um...ok fangirl moment over. The list was really good and your choice fit well. I also agree that Elder Toguro was a nasty too. At least the anime version kept that scene the same. =D

GREAT #1. =D
I liked both the anime and the manga version of his demise, mind you, but the manga's take was a lot more coldly, karmically satisfying. The anime let him off easier, (some say too easy, but the end result was still the same,) but in the process it DID give us some time to breathe and notice that he probably didn't think he would ever turn out this way in an EXTREMELY well-shot flashback. (Most of those death-flashbacks are pained and forced, but this was clever.)
So I'm just glad there are two versions to enjoy of probably the best villain death I know in anime. ^_^

10.01.2010 - 01:32 | repogirl91Y. Oh, Y. You're my hero. Sinergy is one of my all-time favorite bands. I about died when I heard "I Spit on Your Grave" playing. Thank you.
And Light? Hell yeah. I don't understand why people would side with him; he's clearly insane and his death was so satisfying. Death Note drags a bit after... another character dies :whisper: ... but I stayed around to watch that psycho bitch die.
-
10.01.2010 - 01:25 | murderouscowOH MY GOD I ACTUALLY CALLED LIGHT! YES!
Great list Y.
-
10.01.2010 - 01:28 | KainMaliceFirst of all...HIDAN IS THE BEST!!!! I LOVE THAT GUY!!!
Secondly...while I haven't exactly watched the entire Death Note series, I have to agree that I think Light was a hero...not a villain. But then again, this is coming from someone who has been called a sociopath, and I know for damn sure that I actually do have a God Complex.
-
10.01.2010 - 02:00 | Bastard King
You're a hero if you have good intentions, Light didn't want to fix the world, he wanted to control it.
It's kind of like how in Berserk, Guts starts off as a villain. Sure, he's going up against horrible people, but he makes it damn clear that he'll do anything to get what he wants, and the only reason he's doing it is to make Femto, Godhand, and the Apostles suffer.
The difference is that Guts grows from being a villain into an anti hero, where Light goes from being an anti hero to being a villain.
-
02.27.2011 - 01:49 | jjflashActually Guts becomes a far greater monster than any other in Beserk. That's the point.
He goes from misguided young man with a tragic past to bloodthirsty sadist and irredeemable monster. He enjoyed inflicting pain and death and soon became far worse than anything else in the universe.

It's good to see you again, Y. You're incredibly knowledgeable about your topic, you don't yell into the camera for fifteen minutes like the Amazing Atheist, your voice is pleasing to the ears, you like Iron Maiden, one of the greatest bands of all time, and if your not a furry, I'd say you're not only the perfect video maker, you'd be the ideal guy in general.
Though I don't expect you to make videos again unless you go back to a regular schedule, women have conceived children, and taken them to term since your last video. Plus, you probably should've just said the name of the titles first, and then put the characters who died so people could skip things if they wanted to avoid being spoiled. Or maybe put down a list of mangas to read under the video.
Number One from Death Note
Colossal Spoiler
was the most satisfying death ever, in fact, I re read chapter 107 just to see that bastard die again. Not only did I feel absolutely no remorse for him, but the whole time, I recalled when I first read the chapter, and shouted to Matsuda, "SHOOT HIM IN THE KNEE CAPS 'TILL YOU RUN OUT OF BULLETS! THEN TURN HIM SIDEWAYS AND KICK LIGHT IN THE BALLS! DIE LIGHT! YOU FUCKING SCUM!"
Though my favorite part about seeing that arrogant bastard die was the flashback to the first chapter, where you finally see Light and Ryuk complete their conversation, and the last thing Ryuk says:
"All humans are destined to die someday, the place where they go to is Mu, Nothingness."
If Light got to die with dignity, or live, Death Note would go straight to number 1 for most aggrivating series of all time, instead, his death made the manga the best thing ever.
End Colossal Spoiler
It's sad that Sasuke's going to die with dignity, just like Pain and Itachi did even though each and every one of them remorselessly killed countless people and ruined even more lives.
Though my least favorite manga death in recent memory was Barragan's death from Bleach. Here you have the coolest villain in the series, a man so awesome, I almost forgot than none of the good guys ever die in Bleach, and that Aizen is the biggest Villain Mary Sue of all time, and he gets killed by a secondary character with pink hair and a gut that makes Sean Fausz look like Mick Jagger circa 1972, fuck that.
Though Itachi and Pain dying with dignity despite never showing a hint of remorse or humanity beforehand, just because the author and the fans like them was pretty morally appalling.

He specifically stated that there would be spoilers and, to be fair, every movie the Nostalgia Critic reviews he spoils as well by showing all the key points. That is kind of the point of reviews, you see? It assumes you are a fan of the source material or simply don't care enough or hate it enough that you want to see it destroyed.
-
10.01.2010 - 02:12 | jakerose20Why did you take such a long break ?
I liked the review with out the camera , that way we got more screen time on the material you are reviewing .
Y you never read Shin Angyo Onshi manga right ?, that's the only reason i can think of why you did not put that dead on the list .
Why did you take such a long break ?
I hope we will see more from you again.

10.01.2010 - 02:21 | SpotTheShingoNot a bad choice for title song Y, as it reminds me a little of 'Maiden. Yet, for some reason, I kind of would've liked to hear "Die, Die, Die My Darling" instead. Either the Misfits' original or the Metallica cover. But, that's just my personal tastes, I guess...
Still, great list overall! (And perfect for this month! A-bloogy-woogy-woo!)

I completely agree with Light Yagami's death as #1. I couldn't stand Death Note in general for giving a smug psychotic the spotlight, but just for that death scene, I read/watched the endings of the manga, anime, and 2nd live-action movie. I thought Light dying in a dirty puddle in the anime was a nice touch, but it's still not as good as the manga. I personally prefer the movie version because L outlives him.
-
10.27.2010 - 19:47 | Shinra_BanshouI agree about the movie. Although, why couldn't he just have written a date that was ten years in the future?
-
10.01.2010 - 02:49 | Nellufy
I agree with you with the number one satisfying death. When I read Death Note, I was hoping that Light Yagami bitch is going to die. I loathe the fact that he manages to get away with what he had done just to stay in power. When I saw that scene, I was beyond happy. I laughed just like you Y Ruler of Time.
I enjoyed this list and I am glad you got your satisfaction. Now, I hope SASUKE will die soon. He better die.....

10.01.2010 - 02:54 | BetavashFantastic list I can agree with all of them. There is one person I think should have been on there, even though its only in anime form. Maestro Delphine from Last Exile. When I saw her neck get snapped by Alex Rowe I paused, went back and played the ode to joy choir.
-
10.01.2010 - 02:54 | PLAYou didn't mention Ryuk's reveal that there is no afterlife.
-
10.01.2010 - 07:39 | bojak90
the reveal happened prior to Light's death (or at least a flashback) so it didn't really factor in or add to the karmic death
Edit: still pretty sure theer was a flashback that showed Light being told that beforehand but you're right, it actually is worth mentioning since it shows that Light forgot something that he had been told earlier on and that he would end up the same as everyone he looked down on.
-
10.02.2010 - 00:38 | CageAquariumRyuk's reveal was an interesting bit of torture. In all likelihood it was BS and he was taunting him with the no afterlife bit to torture Light but watching him twist the knife, so to speak, was fun. Though even if there was an afterlife in the Death Note universe, I doubt Light has a very pleasant one to look forward to.
