Sound effect make me laugh... so much!!!! Best laugh I've had all day. I would totally write like that if it wasn't so distracting! xD

Bakumon is oddly addicting for me and want to see the two succeed.

I've been reading Bakuman since the beginning, and everything you said was dead on! Great review!!

    "Bakaman"?
    "Stupid Comic"?

You should have screamed "I AM A MAN!" in Japanese during the punch.

Hey, Y! I've missed you! And I'd definitely like to see your take on Bakuman, as it's easily my favorite slice-of-life series, so. On to actually watching the thing...

While Bakuman is definitely no Death Note, you're right it's still a very enjoyable series. Especially reading it one chapter at a time, the tension in this series is unrivaled. It's good to see a nice series that could go on for awhile, especially now that Bleach, and Negima are drawing to a close.
Another great review, Keep up the good work.

They're not cousins, Matshiro's uncle never went after that woman, so he's not the father.

    Your avatar is....amazing.

    Great review, by the way.

I finished volume one of this series and found the romance and dialogue with characters in events that didn't affect the making manga plot were terrible. Absolutely disgusting, a suprisingly large contrast to when they were making manga and talking with each other.

    Odd.

Ah another good review. I was always curious about this one but never looked into it because I had a fantasy about doing a webcomic in high school since I was a decent artist and good writer. Never much of a people person though and comics are hell with two, nearly impossible with just one. The hard solo work and consistant failure combined with a decreasing motivation and faith in my abilities caused me to scrap it for good.

I kind of regret not reading it as even if it is depressing on a personal level I can definitely empathize with the characters and it sounds like an excellent slice of life story.

Since the other two manga/anime people have already reviewed it, (not counting Suede, since he's not on the site, not counting Marzgurl, she doesn't review any specific manga/anime, only concepts of them and their developent.) Are you going to review AZUMANGA DAIOH! [the animation]?
  • zeroespada
Pretty sure that Y has stated that he doesn't watch a lot of anime and prefers manga.

Could be mistaken or it could be an exception.

I'm definitely pleased to see a review of Bakuman here. I picked it up only a little over a month ago now, more out of curiosity than anything, and I have to say for all it's faults I can't stop reading it! I will admit, however, that you are right in the fact that if you're not already heavily into manga, you probably won't enjoy this one much. I have a buddy who pretty much only reads Naruto/One Piece/Bleach/Fairy Tail and doesn't ever try to get into a series unless it has an anime adaptation, and when I tried to get him into Bakuman, I was met with a lot of resistance, and he quit after the first chapter. His loss, I know, but maybe now that an anime is coming, I can convince him to watch that.

Personally, I actually like Hattori a little more than Niizuma, only because he seems to be far wiser than anyone around, even the editor-in-chief. I love his input on everything, and how he's always taking everything in around him. He's a model editor and when he was finally reassigned I was jumping for joy to be rid of that stupid humor-loving fool. Go ruin Iwase's manga!

Actually, considering the latest manga chapter, I do love how no rival ever stays truly "evil" in this manga. I will admit, it does seem a little weird that EVERY mangaka in the business seems to want Ashirogi Muto to succeed, even if that means their manga ends up worse, but I like to think it's because everyone in this manga world thinks like you, that this restricted long-distance relationship between Mashiro and Azuki is doomed to fail if they don't get things going, so better to let Ashirogi Muto take the limelight for a while, get the girl, and get freaking married so that the real rivalries can begin!

This is one of my favourite series I've ever read. I would like to argue with you about some of the points you plotted out but none of them are really wrong from certain perspectives, except for the main relationship. I really like that. And the reason is that it's cheap, it's corny and it's childish. But the writing and artwork is great enough to convince you that it's genuine love. It's brilliant!

I don't know if I really want to check Bakuman out. The art looks pretty good, and I do like character-driven stories, but something tells me Bakuman would not be one of my personal favorite cups of tea. I fear that there will be too many issues featured in the story that I strongly disagree with, and being as open-minded as I consider myself to be, I would hate to find myself screaming at a book for possibly being full of (for lack of a better, more meaningful term) "bullshit." There really is a part of me that wants to love Bakuman, but I just don't know if I'm mentally prepared for any disagreeable issues that could come in my direction. Still, that was a good review, and I hope to see the next one from you, soon. Nice job, Y.
  • ChaosZereul
I can honestly say that the levels of "bullshit" are somewhat low in this series. The points where we're in the Shueisha(sp?) building and when the several mangaka come together to chat are some incredibly well-thought-out pieces, exploring the world of manga as it is, diving a bit deeper into the hard work it takes to create the manga we love to read. Now yes, YRoT did point out that they can beat some subjects to death, but for me, at least, it's never been a problem; when you analyze, you can learn a lot and find new levels of enjoyment, but when you over-analyze, like I feel YRoT was doing at a couple points, you only end up ruining the ride for yourself.

The only person I found myself shouting at was Miura, and it's for the same reasons YRoT mentioned. When he "succeeds" - which, FYI, doesn't happen all that often in this manga for Ashirogi Muto - he rides on it for quite some time, and when he starts to fail, he just starts shouting at everyone until he gets his way. As mentioned below, he does start coming around recently, but it's that middle of the series where he's ever present and constantly screwing things up that you'll start to facepalm every time you see him talk.

Other than that, though, I didn't find too many BS points in the series. Maybe I'm just not a critical analyst, but like I said before, over-analyzing only ends up ruining the ride.

Well then, after reading this comment, and some time to think, I believe it's best for someone like me to not check out Bakuman, unless I want another person's opinions constantly shoved in my head. Still, the art's not bad.

This is the only manga I read now, and you're completely right, the cliff hangers are aggravatingly effective at what they set out to do.

I disagree about Miura though. While he does come across as useless in the beginning, and really, he was VERY useless, he slowly grows as an editor. In my opinion he is one of the more realistic characters in the series right now. He wants to do what he wants, but eventually realizes that he can't always have his way, and he has to do what is best for the people he watches over.

Though the relationship between Miho and Mashiro is horrible in my opinion too. God they are so BORING, and in the recent chapters we were supposed to support Tagaki and Miyoshi when they told her to not audition for their rival anime, even though it would mean Miho achieved her dream of becoming a voice actor and getting on step closer to their goals in life, a real boyfrriend would have supported anything she did (Even though she did end up not auditioning anyway, Mashiro still busted in there and tried to do a Big Damn Hero moment to have it promptly ruined).

Other than that though, I have loved this series so far, and you're dead on with your favorite character! Nizumi (Sp?) is by far the best character, I just like him because he's by far the nicest guy in the series, he always encourages his rivals, something through subtle means, and he supports EVERYONE, he has no side, all he cares about is that good manga is released, and he loves the competition. What an awesome character.

    Anyway, so yeah. Great series.

Great review, only two things to comment on:

I'd rank hattori my most favourite character followed by kaya and eiji in the third... simply owing to the fact that eiji is a "lesser is more" kind of character- if he was used more often than he is, i would definetly grow tired of him...

The only difference between mashiro and his uncle- and the one that makes mashiro say that he didn't make the same mistakes as his uncle- is that mashiro and azuki have actually told each other how they feel, a feat that his uncle and azuki's mother never once achieved.

I agree that Miura is one rookie editor. How dare he allow the Ashirogi team to have trap get cancelled.

No explanation about Hiramaru!? Lol he's hilarious. He quit being an ordinary salaryman when he discovered he was a manga genius, basically just by idly doodling one day. But he's surprised to discover how much MORE work he has to put in even doing a gag manga than his old office job, and he's constantly trying to get out of work, so his editor has to keep holding a new carrot over his head every week. Now the editor's convinced Hiramaru that if his anime does well enough one of figurines will appeal to one of the female mangaka he likes and score him a date with her!

Hey I understand your thought with the whole there romance is stupid and a bit nive but I actrly got to say it was the beter part of that.It actruly trying to go with the whole promise is a promise and if they can't keep the promise they already made for themselfs;well why should they get married. It is stupid but then agine it is fiction and supose to symbolise a more conserivtive love compare to the other which honestly is something that test there love becase lets face it ."If you see a guy who is about on equil levels kissing huging and haveing a loveing relationship with a atractive young lady, kinda makes you want to you know try something."So that shows a bit more control and ristrant and they do talk it just proboly off screen like do we need to see every lol in email or text.

Also when you think about it the begining chapter when your main char is all emo and gets the nerve to "nut up or shut up" it proves he a stronger char. Also makes you more intrested. Instead of someone like Sinji from Evangalion (SP i just call it Eva) who dosen't nut up and certainly dosen't SHUT UP!(the littel shit skid)
  • Shinigami

That surely sounded like instresting manga. Then again people behind it are same that were behind Death Note so maybe that explains why its so unique.

Love this series, thanks for reviewing it. i do like many of the points you addressed, but couldn't there have been more of an explanation of the rest of the characters, like Hiramaru, Aoki, or Shizuka? i mean, they're all very interesting in their own right and they are a good reason why i read this series.

also, i agree with your thoughts on Miura, seriously, F&@K that guy. i mean, he does develop a BIT later on, but he's still like a thorn in everyone's side.

anyway, great review and glad to see you back, Y!

I used to have a friend in High school how always provided all his actions with sound effects and one word narration.

[edit]the eerie part is he used to do it in exactly the same manner and very, very similar voice[/edit]

Great to see another video from you Y. It seems like it has been a long time since your last video and I'm happy to see this one. I've heard a bit about Bakuman and read a couple chapters, but it's still nice to get more details on the series.

This video had me laughing quite a bit. Good ob on that mate. I can't wait to see another. :)
