This is all really interesting :O Just sharing, I got into Tokusatsu because my uncle is a character designer for video games, and he did a thing based on Getter Robo. He bought me a big Getter Robo toy when I was like, 6, then he also bought me a guyver video set. So, I actually got into Tokusatsu via Guyver when I was probably 10 years too young to actually watch it.I didn't see ZO until I had finished watching Kabuto :( I wish I started with it, that's a much more badass origin story.

My first Kamen Rider series was Kamen Rider Decade but thanks goes to Samurai Sentai Shinkenger that had crossover episodes with Kamen Rider Decade. Before that I had not even heard about Kamen Rider. Althought Kamen Rider Decade was first Kamen Rider series that I watched and got me intrested I don't like it very much. This is mostly becouse of badly other Kamen Riders were treated in it. Expesially Kamen Rider Kuuga who was made just side kick instead of that bad ass Kamen Rider that he is supposed to be.

04.30.2011 - 05:15 | AmuroNT1I'd love to be on this kind of show, but I'm not some amazing Toku expert or anything. :|
Also, I WANTED to share a link for Hack since he said there were some Rider Belts he was interested in getting; there was this guy on Yahoo Japan who was selling the belts with modified adult-sized straps, but I just checked and he's taken everything down. Which is a real shame because I wanted a belt for my Lost Driver.

This was really interesting and awesome.
My first Kamen Rider was Kiva, which by me is one of my favourites (though I can agree with all the stuffs introduced that never appears again). So I watched other Kamen Rider shows, like Black, Faiz, Kuuga, Den-O, W and OOO. Among these shows so are my favourites Black and Den-O.
W was goofy yet awesome at time (though I did expect a serious series by how it began) and OOO is great. Yeah, these two got a lot of toys in it, but they didn't seem useless to the plot.
But my favourites among Kiva are Black and Den-O. And I really liked the films Shin, ZO and J.
I did grow up with Power Rangers when I was little, and when I first saw Go-Onger so did my interest in these kinds of show revive themselves and I started looking at some of the other series like Jetman, Dekaranger, Magiranger, Shinkenger, Goseiger and now Gokaiger. (Not mentioning the series that I have only seen a few episodes of.)
I didn't think that Jetman was so great as others have said, but it's not bad.
Though I really liked Magiranger, Dekaranger and Shinkenger.
Goseiger was a bit weak, mostly because it came after Shinkenger who seemed to have a bigger budget than Goseiger considering that the Nanashi and other kinds of henchemen had really well done suits that actually makes them look like monsters. And Goseiger felt more like a toy commercial than the other shows.
Gokaiger is so far awesome though.
I'm at the moment watching Garo too together with OOO and Gokaiger, and it's cool so far, but I expect that the story will be as good as people says it is.

How does the character development for Kiva pan out? I loved the music for the series, the costume designs and the switching back and fourth between time periods. However what turned me off the series was that it was such a jarring personality shift between social situations and fighting the Fangari. Plus WTF is the deal with the spirits inside the dragon building thing?!
I would also like to know how far in Faiz starts to really come to grips with the fact that he is an Orphenach, as well as the other re-occurring Orphenachs developing what they are doing in relation to the organization. Faiz also was a real turn off compared to how he was portrayed in Decade, which I guess is one of the biggest complaints of the series.
I personally am currently watching Ryuki and Kabuto. Both series I can see developing ideas for future series. Ryuki lays the foundations for a rider being not the exact definition of cool, but fights for a selfless desire to help others, like Eiji is now in OOO. I also feel that Tsukasa has more redeeming qualities than Tendou, because it quickly becomes apparent that there is method behind the madness of Tsukasa, but Tendou just seems a bit stuck up to me, and yet is very cool because of how good he is at everything.
W is my favorite series overall though, simply because of the format of 2 episode story arcs, very involving characters on both sides, TONS of development and very cool fight scenes! Despite the silliness of the early episodes *coughheavenstornadocough *.
I will probably check out ZO tonight if I can!

my first Kame Rider was actually Kamen Rider black but i didnt know what it was because i was a little kid and didnt really pay attention :P but i got back into it after i got pissed at how sucky power rangers was going in america and went over to super sentai, which if you're watching "Superhero Time" on a japanese channel you get Kamen Rider with your super sentai lol. And Kamen Rider OOO and super sentai Gokaiger are both awesome shows by the way :P

Loving this podcast. Always great to hear about discussions about tokusatsu.
My first exposure to Kamen Rider was oddly enough through Ultraman Vs. Kamen Rider (An awesome, awesome special that was). But my first show that I started to watch throughoutly was Black.
Been a fan of Kamen Rider Black ever since.
Oh, and I also happen to be both a toku fan AND a Doctor Who fan (Fun fact, I heard in Japan they actually did classify Doctor Who as a tokusatsu show).

Yes, Keita Amemiya really is one of the greats of modern Tokusatsu. I first took notice of his work when G-Fan ran an article in 2000 on his new mini series, Tekkouki Mikazuki. At the time it was the most expensive mini series in Japanese history, and it starred such genre greats as Yukijiro Hotaru, who played inspector Osako in the 90s Gamera films among many other roles. I know I've mentioned it before, but if you're a Amemiya fan you need to track down this rare and bizarre entry in Toku lore. You haven't lived until you've seen a giant robot fight a watermelon lizard:

Anyway, I'm ashamed to admit how little Kamen Rider I have actually seen, since it is hard to call myself a Tokusatsu fan without a firm grasp of the Rider franchise. I've been meaning to watch Decade, but I feel it would be jumping the gun without watching the other series...and as you mentioned finding time for that is very tricky indeed. I actually wish someone would put together a 'must-see' episode list for these series, so I can just watch the cool stuff and skip all the filler. As it stands though, I think I'll start with Kabuto.
I really enjoyed this broadcast guys and I hope the new show stays as entertaining as it was this time.

04.30.2011 - 19:00 | hoorjhI've watched the guyver films, 2 is defiantly leagues better. I enjoyed Dragon Knight alot, buying up those figmas as they come. Zebraman is freaking awesome, Zebraman 2 is kinda a let down though, but still alright.

Good stuff, I don't know I kind of dug the "heaven's tornado" episode of Kamen rider W, granted I'm a hip hop fan so that may just be personal taste. But otherwise I too really dug the show and yeah he really brought alot of heart and emotion at the end.
Maybe it's because I've just gotten into the genre so I don't have as many preconceptions(the only other Kamen Riders I've watched besides W is Kamen rider Kabuto). But I really dug Kamen Rider OOO, and didn't even think to compare it to kR W.
Granted I really dig the conspiracy/mysterious organization aspect of the Kamen rider series I have watched, so I think that part of it helped ease me into the goofy tone of OOOs. Also probably didn't hurt that I'm a big anime fan.
Sorry for the long comment(I tend to go on forever with these things). Looking forward to the next Vaudiosonic

Also I'm with Apollo(thought his comparison to pro wrestling was great). I also would use the comparison of being a sci-fi fan and watching stuff like the original Star Trek or some of the B horror movies(like the original Universal Horror films). You kind of need to know what you are getting yourself into and take some things like you said with a grain of salt. And like you guys said look at the tone of the storyline and whether or not it respects you as a viewer.
That is one of the things that really bugs the crap out of me with entertainment, when it assumes you're an idiot if you like a certain genre. And tries too hard to be goofy and self-referential.
-
I totally agree with Vangelus, PR RPM is one of the best power rangers series I have ever watched(and I've watched parts or whole of most of them). I totally dug the dark tone and really dug the characters. So you aren't alone on that(speaking of which I need to finish that series, I'm like up to episode 28).

Wonderful hearing the two of ya'll converse.
I remember looking forward to watching Tranzor Z (Mazinger Z)and Spectreman when I was a little kid, and I've enjoyed several shows and movies of the same sort since. I must have gotten distracted, because I find it hard to believe that Inframan wouldn't have been mentioned, at least in passing.
My little brother got me hooked on Kamen Rider with Faiz based on the fact that it had a transforming Robot motorcycle. I've since seen up to the Faiz world episodes on Decade, and then I've also seen Agito. Garo is awesome.
One of the things that I loved about Magiranger was that these were siblings, and not just five random people.
Ultraman Nexus was awesome, and has some of the best opening music.
It is nice reading the comments about what shows got everyone into Tokusatsu here

06.27.2011 - 13:45 | Jack of All TradesI'm rather curious. Will you have a Vaudiosonic with Sean Fauz? He's collecting a lot of stuff for Decade, W and OOO and seeing you talk would probably be a lot of fun to see you talk!
