Here's the thing about Another, it has beautiful visuals, it's stylistically well done (animation, color palette, etc.), and an appropriate soundtrack for setting the tone. My problem is - I just don't empathize with the characters, they feel more like cardboard cutouts that exist only to further the plot. Good horror has to get under the viewer's skin (see Shiki or Higurashi). If you as a viewer can't relate to the characters (in particular the main protagonist in the case of Another) then it doesn't work. Don't get me wrong, I like the show, I just hope it'll get better as it goes forward.

02.09.2012 - 11:51 | JunkWatcherTotally agree. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to use an upbeat, happy happy joy joy song for a horror series.

02.09.2012 - 11:20 | IMChewbaccaI'd say that Another would be one of the best shows this season. At least right now, it's running as my favourite.

They want to sacrifice him to bring back their dead classmate? And they're all dead because the commited suicide after their star student died? Just a guess, but seeing as how I actually know nothing about the series prior to this review, I'm probably wrong.

I have to call BS at the end there. "It leaves you guessing"? REALLY?! I'm sorry, but even given that the opening kind of spoils the "mystery" for those watching, Koichi has got to be one of the most oblivious guys I've seen. We're up to Episode 5 now, and they FINALLY explain, in detail, what the heck's going on, when I not only guessed most of the important parts within the first 15 minutes of the first episode, but could have come to the same exact realization if I were ONLY given the information that Koichi was given.
His constant doe-eyed expressions kind of get annoying, as once again we have the anime trope I'd like to call "Everything Must Be Explained To Me Before I Can Understand." Seriously, Koichi has not even made a token GUESS as to what's going on in all five episodes, despite getting STRONG hints by practically everyone. I won't spoil any more than that, but suffice it to say it's my only pet peeve with this. The story and the situations of Class 3-3 are amazingly intriguing, and I agree with Masako that this is a definite Continue, but god damn can we PLEASE get some less-ignorant Main Characters for ONCE?!

This is definitely the best anime I'm watching this season. So far through five episodes, I'm loving every minute of it. I've been waiting for Masako to review this and he finally got around to it.
This anime does sort of move at a snail's pace and we really don't see much happen in the 1st episode. After the first few, then things REALLY start to get interesting.
Overall, this is a very good story and the concept behind it is extremely intriguing. I do agree with ChaosZereul who posted above that the characters do seem rather bland and the lead character seems pretty dense. Although, to be fair, I think knowing his backstory, its understandable that he would be somewhat emotionless and would question everything around him. I will admit that the animation is gorgeous and the music is quite fitting...except for the OP. I really don't like the idea of Ali Project doing the OP for this anime. It just doesn't seem to fit the rest of the show. The ED on the other hand is the exact opposite. It fits the show perfectly and I will admit that it is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in an anime. I've watched the ED at least 25 times and I still watch it randomly on occasion.
All-in-all, Another is a must watch. I'm not a big horror fan but this anime still piques my interest.
