On a secondary note the fourth episode leaves off on cliff hanger too not as bad as the first but still.

well, your commentary on the series seems good, but i couldn't help to notice some typical anime cliche like "women love dressing as maidens" and fan service outfits in the female characters that cover so little it becomes plain absurd. It bothers me a little, maybe because i work with clothes, but are those things kind of necessary? And the main characters are so handsome that it just looks like a lack of creativity from the artist, makes you wonder if ugly people exist in japan. But that's just about imagery and so. Judging by your review, the story is going to be just fine.

02.02.2012 - 09:17 | JunkWatcherI really doubt that Bodacious Space Pirates will even come close of becoming a contender for show of the year or even the season.
I've seen these characters before, I haven't seen any surprising (re)actions yet and although the plot hasn't really started yet, I have a feeling that it's gonna be a rather predictable story.
Don't get me wrong, it'll probably be an enjoyable series and I will finish it, but I don't think it's gonna be my Show of the Season.
That title will most likely go to Another, a mystery horror series that doesn't rely on jump-scares, but instead has a very creepy and uncomfortable atmosphere. Horror at it's best.
Seriously, Go. Check. It. Out. It is awesome.
Both shows are available for free at crunchyroll right now, so there's no reason to not even give it a chance.
btw, I was wondering if by any chance you're gonna do a top # list of best shows of the year?

Yeah, I was a little disappointed that Captain Harlock got no mention here. He's kind of the best.
Series looks really blasé, just a lot of young girl character fanservice in a setting we've all seen a hundred times before. I doubt this will be one of the best for 2012 unless we have a really awful season.

Unlike some, I LOVE the slow(er) pacing. I would have been so turned off of the anime if within the first or second episode she got shoved into this captains position she knows nothing about. Seems to me most animes these days just rush into things and we are actually getting some character development.

Yeah i just really found the first episode boring. i think it's mostly because it wasnt what i was expecting.

On the one hand, I WANT to believe in an awesome anime about space pirates having piratey adventures in space, I truly do. But what looks like an all-female crew (or at least a crew with a disproportionate amount of young girls if that intro is something to go by) and the main heroine starting off as a maid is enough to ring several warning bells in my mind. Do tell, fellow animefans- am I being too hasty? Does the show go beyond being what looks like a shallow fanservice festival and actually become an epic adventure of well-written, engaging characters in dramatic ship to ship battle IN SPAACCEE?
Or is my kneejerk reaction correct and this is just an excuse to have adorable girls dress up in short skirts and talk about booty a lot? Also Masako- look up Privateers.

02.03.2012 - 01:41 | kingkirbyYou're being too hasty - normally, I'd be the first to jump ship at the sign of pointless fanservice, but there really isn't any of that in this show. A couple episodes ago, for example, there was a zero gravity scene and absolutely no attempts at fanservice were made (there's very little, honestly. Maid cafes are a thing in japan, so I wouldn't necessarily count it as fanservice here - just a girl working to make some extra cash). Not too many shows would be able to claim something like that

I agree with JunkWatcher. While this show looks...intriguing. The real anime of 2012 has to be Another. I've watched hundreds of anime in my lifetime and I can honestly say I've never seen an anime genuinely creep me out like Another has. What I love about that show is it is harder than hell to figure out. I know in a lot of mystery anime, there are subtle hints that make it easy for you to figure out what will happen next or what will happen later in the series. Not with this anime. On top of that, Another has one of the most beautiful ending songs I've ever heard in an anime. Give a shot, Masako. Much like Angel Beats, P.A. Works has a lot going for them in this anime.

Why didn't anyone bring up the references?
Are they just a bit to blatant, or hasn't anyone noticed them?
In the first episode, before the main characters mom opens the door, the visitors has to input a password. The password is?
"The sea of space, is my sea" (Uchû no umi wa, ore no umi)
This is a reference to the opening of the original Captain Harlock anime, which starts off with these two lines! Looks like they give credit where credit's due = )
The other reference is the name McDougal, which might be taken from the McDougal brothers in the anime Outlaw Star (one of my favorite sci-fi anime ever

Captain Harlock! You all mock his flag as you wear it so brazenly! It matters not, I will run you thought, for the honor of the Arcadia! DO YOU HEAR ME, YOU SCURVY DOGS!?
Ahh... I went knee deep in my commissar mode there, but a good over view of the first episode but it didn't seem good enough to draw me in.
I guess i expect more than just hints of something going on...

I checked out the first episode and was quite pleased. Maybe it's because it's been quite a while since I've seen any anime, but I didn't feel that the pace was slow at all– in fact, it felt almost too fast at points. But I'm just used to American shows, so there it is.
Also, it really bothered me that Chiaki's introduction was basically a carbon copy of Homura's from Madoka Magica, but that's something else all together.
-
Light novel not manga.
Kane. Well yeah but you're saying it wrong. It's clearly pronounced like "Cain" and is written ??? on screen in the show.
Also, Google privateer (or hell, letter of marque) or, you know, Francis Drake.
Glad you like it. This should kick into high gear this week.

Can't say I understand the early enjoyment so many people are getting from this. I understand that it's setting itself up very well and I can see the potential of it getting better as it goes on but as of now NOTHING has happened. When you take a realistic approach to space it's kind of boring but I can forgive that since it adds atmosphere but I really think more people should be looking at this show through an objective standpoint without any preconceived notions of the staff's previous work.
